  • Good morning, this is Dylan Jovine with Behind the Markets. Today is Monday, and I want to reflect on something else that happened in 2001-something that, in my opinion, has had a far greater impact on the world than 9/11. On December 11th, 2001, China was allowed into the World Trade Organization, a decision that has reshaped global trade and power dynamics.
Many elites thought that integrating China into the global economy would lead to democratization and cooperation. Instead, we've created a formidable competitor that is now flooding markets, like Germany’s, with cheaper goods. This week, Volkswagen is facing layoffs for the first time because of Chinese exports. The ramifications of this decision continue to unfold today, impacting economies around the globe.
On a lighter note, I’d like to wish Harold and Mona a happy 52nd anniversary. Congratulations on a milestone of love and understanding! Have a wonderful day.
