  • We've dug into the VHS archives to find this cool little Dunlop video from 1993/94 titled "Absolute Faith". This came from Larry Perkins' podium speech after winning the 1993 Bathurst 1000 stating "Absolute Faith in the Dunlops" referring to the top quality tyres that just helped he, his co-driver and team win the 1993 Great Race.
The second clip is a cool clip of Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates with co-driver Coral Taylor in their Toyota Rally Car, also on Dunlops.

God, as a 43yr old family man, I miss these days of racing; Group A, Group C, V8 Supercars from 1990's until the B series Falcons (always a Ford man, but the Iron Lion was my favourite sound)
LP is part the reason why I have always stuck with Dunlop tires

Everyone else: Tin Tops in Oz and a Chev Engine. Larry: Ex Formula One and a beautifully engineered Holden V8. Hold my beer.

Larry wasn't interested in ATCC results for himself but his diehard fans knew that come Bathurst he would have everything dialled in and he would be absolutely flying. Loved watching it. Happy as Larry no doubt.

Neil Bates' footwork of all 3 pedals pretty much simultaneously is very impressive. Old school competitors (like me in the 70s and 80s) and a lot of competition drivers back then take that sort of thing almost for granted - although Bates is good on the pedals by any standard - but I see increasing numbers of "gen Y", "Gen Z", and "Millennial" drivers competing on the racetrack who just jam the gearstick into whatever gear they want next and basically have the manual gearbox skills of a weekday commuter. This is especially the case in America, where there wasn't the culture of "stick shift" road cars that we had in Australia. As a consequence, a lot of American track-day drivers and even race drivers never had anyone to teach them and "model" the complete set of manual gearbox skills.
And it's not just a "style" thing, and it's not even about reducing strain and wear on the driveline; if you're trying to balance a car on the limit coming into a corner and you just jam the stick back a couple of gears without matching the revs you'll actually unsettle the car with a stab of engine braking and even break traction when you just come off the clutch with a closed throttle. I can't even bring myself to keep watching in-car footage when I've worked out they really don't know how to "drive a stick". OK, I'm an old grump; but that's my twopence worth and now it's off my chest.

Dunlop Japan making their competition tires always appeared to deliver. Earlier on in the piece I have heard stories about sets of tires overnighted for big events with new custom compounds just for a particular event. What a great era. Also a great era for ARC. Nice vision of the Perth Rally. Bates and Taylor really were in a class of their own.

Wonderful. Larry at his best. Neil Bates and Coral Taylor were a force to be reckoned with too. Rallying is the purest form of motor sport in my view, controlling a car to that level of precision on ball bearings at huge speed requires true mastery.

I may have missed it in one of the videos, so if there is one can you please direct me, but I remember reading in Auto action along time after Bathurst what Larry had actually done to the engine, and now he had circumvented the rules to allow the old Holden engine to produce as much horsepower as the chefssomething to do with wedges in the top of the Head inlet port or manifold or something I just can’t remember

@@perkinsengineering I just had a look that one’s about the slide injection. I’m talking more about the wedges that Larry made. There was a rule a time you weren’t allowed to add metal I believe, but because Larry had screwed these pieces in, though was considered temporary, and so that gave betterflow of the fuel air mix into the cylinder heads. I can’t remember exactly how it worked, but maybe you can explain it better.
