Hi there, thank you for your review and we appreciate your feedback. Regarding some issues you mentioned, we would love to clarify them.
Regarding the voice control limitation, in order to be able to record for a longer time at a high resolution/frame rate, Osmo Action 4 will turn off voice control at this time.
For the video deletion, you can click on the left side of the corresponding video in the playback section to delete the video, it does not require 7 steps to do so.
And since the lens has a certain thickness and is not 100% light-transmitting, therefore, when the light passes through the lens, optical refraction and reflection will occur. This is an optical phenomenon.
Thank you for your attention and your support.

Question: As to the availability of higher FPS (say 120 or 240) in 4K Resolution, will this be made possible thru a software update or do we need to wait for the OA5 to realize/experience this?
A reply will be much appreciated. Thanx.

@@Grandpa_Bangge so the action 4 already does 4k 120 and it’s great. 240 is in 1080P and DJI won’t likely answer questions about future products ;)

Nothing mysterious about the jitter in low light. The electronic stabilization attempts to reduce sharp movement between frames by translating frames to remove perceived motion (+ a crop to hide the edges of the frame). This works very well when each frame is sharp, as reframing is simple. Unfortunately in low light, shutter speed is reduced. This means that motion causes light sources to blur. Since the motion we're trying to stabilize is variable by definition (stable, consistent motion just feels like a gimbal shot) the amount of of blur is variable.
When you align subsequent frames to reduce motion, all you're left with is the variable blur (which looks jittery, because it reflects the motion which is now removed). Only way around this is to make sure that light sources don't blur between frames, which means shooting at a higher shutter speed or using some sort of physical stabilization.

A few other people including DJI commented on this issue and one way to help is to use the lens “Guard” instead of the lens with the glass cover. DJI said this would improve the lowlight experience.
Thanks again for your awesome explanation. Have a great day.

In low light, set exposure to manual, lock shutter to double your frame rate, and then for ISO, scroll up the menu options until it allows you to set auto ISO adjustment for a range of your choice. Say 100-800. so, you keep the correct shutter speed and the camera adjust ISO accordingly. I think you'll find the ghosting is gone.

    • @thebetterbuy
      @thebetterbuy  Год назад +9

This is excellent advice and will go a long way to solving the problem. I normally do shutter and frame on manual as well as
ISO, but was testing everything based on what a non tech consumer might experience with just using auto. I think many cause users will stick with auto, but your solutions certainly help with the issue. Several other people have commented about how the stabilization combined with the lowlight can also cause this issue so removing stabilization and not doing heavy moving shots as well as using just the lens guard help.

The first accessories I purchased for it were combined ND and CPL filters. I wanted to retain motion blur in any situation. Great having an EV setting. The surprise came when I found that I could lock the shutter speed, and the second surprise that it is not a full manual mode, because ISO is set in ranges, and continues to adjust
as in auto. A great function as long as you want that.

That jitter in electronic stabilization in low light is a common problem on any form of digital stabilization (no matter the camera) where the shutter speed is not fast enough to produce a sharp image. What is happening is the camera is lowering the shutter speed (in auto mode) to allow as much light in which in turn is creating motion blur that goes against the direction of electronic stabilization to keep the frame locked. Things to try to over come this is to lock the shutter speed to 1/200 or higher - but in low light conditions, a shutter speed of 1/200 on these tiny sensors tends to have very high ISO which produces very noisy images which can also act against the digital stabilization.

it's not glitching. Good to understand how stabilisation works. And film as it is. If single frame in low light needs longer shutter speed - frames are blurred by longer motion. And then software trying to stabilise these blurred frames into one place. That's the glitch. In low light you just need physical gimbal and better handheld technique. All Cameras still needs skilled operators ;)

Very good and in-depth review! I bought the Action 4 about a week ago and I've done my fair share of research beforehand, and you're right! These were all points that no one really talked about. I found it very interesting! I am loving this camera and yes, it has some slight issues sometimes but overall it is a great deal. I'm mainly using it to record videos while cycling and even tho the wind noise reduction works pretty good, if you reach 35-40km/h it does become kinda hard to hear what I am saying. I put a piece of that cushy microphone cover thingy over the mics and will see if that helps reduce the wind noise. If not, I might have to buy their wireless mic in the future, but that is when I have financially recovered from purchasing the camera itself.

Hi! Thanks for this video, i’m a super happy owner of an OA4 since a week now not really tested it properly but tomorrow i’ll be on vacation in dolomites for some exciting gravel and mountain bike rides and there will be e a real test for the OA4! Some side notes on your video, the other cap you have with the adventure combo (which i have) is a lens hood and NOT another lens cover so be aware of that because with the lens hood the camera is not water proof, what you see in low light situation (jittering and so on) is the stabilizer that struggles in low light, i saw in other videos that removing the lens cover improve the stabilization i will give it a try soon, i made some night walk in my city to test the low light performance and i can say if you stay steady and make some pan/tilt shoots it is INSANELY GOOD! The amount of light captured is phenomenal but as you start walking it struggles a lot… (because of the combination of EIS and mainly for the optical flow as the camera try to find some high contrast points) but i will test soon to shoot without the stabilization and stabilize it later on gyroflow as the OA4, with some resolution, record the gyroscope data you can use later on. This is my very first proper action cam (i already have an insta go 2 which i will use for the “impossible” shoots) and i completely agree with you, nevermind if the GP12 will shoot in 64k at 640fps at 100bit will stick with dji as it fits perfectly my needs.
Cheers from Roma Italy from a new subscriber!

    • @thebetterbuy
      @thebetterbuy  Год назад +1

Thanks for the comment. So my conclusion for quality is that the GP will edge out the DJI by a small margin, but it comes at a cost. If image quality is all you care about then maybe the GP is the one for you, but I truly don’t think the consumer will be able to tell the difference between the 2 cameras unless being asked to “spot the difference” which is why I say usability for DJI gives it the win.

So many shoppers are looking more between the Action 4 and the Action 3 (Or Insta 360 X3). A couple things I discovered this morning when doing final research before dropping the hammer on an Action 3 bundle (I didn't) that I haven't seen many people discuss is that the bluetooth remote only works with the 4 (and apparently can't wake the camera) and also the 4 can accept 512gb sd cards versus only 256 on the 3.

I want to amend my info here. I ended up returning the DJI and going with the Hero 10. Having to sideload DJI's questionable software like that is not secure and not acceptable. Third parties have assessed MIMO and determined that it contains too many security threats and allows too many broad permisions to be trustworthy so I opted not to allow it on my phone which, like anyone else's contains payment methods and passwords. GoPro's QUIK app is at least trustworthy enough to stay listed on Apple and Google's app stores which means it has been SOMEWHAT vetted vs DJI being able to do just whatever they want with their own software package distributed from their own site.

Ghostless stabilization needs a minimum of 1/100 shutter speed. The ghosting that appears in low-light is due to the fact that the processor can not stitch the taken shutter frames together good enough because of the lack of contrast/lightig/edge-detection in the picture frames that come from the shutter. My recommendation is to use a gimbal in those conditions and turn of the integrated stabilization.

The magnetic mounts are very solid in the grip. The magnets are only for guiding the mount points to the right location. I have not done extensive testing on that, but I can say it is securely mounted. Though slamming into the snow, could knock it loose. Obviously depends on the impact.

i have the camera and there is no camera with a sensor of that sizes that can handle a low light situation, all of them are bad. Ghosting thing it is an issue when you have stabilization at low shutter speed, of course low speed more light, we have 2 options, get a gimbal and turn off stabilization and horizon thing or race the shutter speed and find a light where you can record the video, either way you need something that can illuminate you. Yes we will love something really good in low light but they are action cameras, they are not to meant to perform 100% in low light and i thing dji is doing a great job. Usually the glitching is from the shutter speed and stabilisation. Electronic stabilisation needs shutter speeds starting from 1/200 or more as the 180° rule does not work with EIS.
My sony FDR X3000 is destroying both the gopro 11 and all the DJI's at low light because it has optical stabilisation. Yeahh... an action camera from 2016 is better at low light.
Try 1/200 shutter and see what happens. If that does not work, turn off electronic stabilisation and use a ghimbal for low light.
Even if you use the auto setting, in low light the EIS will damage the image quality.

Well, optical stabe has wobble if there’s too much action. Fast walking on FDR x3000 already shows wobble in the corners, what more if it’s used for extreme actions. So i think it’s just right that gopro and dji uses electronic stabe, it will be better for more scenarios. And yes, a gimbal could help minimize those jitters. Our hope for low light is to wish that dji/gopro could make bigger sensor/bigger aperture, though at one point they’ll need to introduce autofocus to be able to continue doing that.

Glad you are a rider. Every person should at least try a motorcycle for a change.
On a side note, the Hayabusa is way too much fun to ride. Never rode a 400, so I don't know. Ridden a 500F, ZX6R, 10R, R1, ZX14 and now I have the '99 Hayabusa since autum of 2015.
Was checking out the Action 4 as I do have a passion for video cameras hopeing that maybe "next year" I will change my FDR X3000.
So far nothing is worth that for my way of using the cameras.
For me is set it and forget it. Sure, I would like better stabilisation and horizon lock but, most of all I need the camera to be dependable and take external power and microphone in at the same time. This is a must for me.
The X3000 has a mic jack, mini HDMI and tripod mount... so, it's kind of hard to let go. No 4K 60 but that XAVC 1080p is just great and at a bit rate high enough that you can upscale to 4K.
Don't plan to shoot in 4K as it takes way to much space. I shoot for hours as you never know what landscape is presented to you after the next curve while motorcycle traveling in foreign countries.
Low light is good to have when walking the streets of a town or even visiting a museum. Sometimes we only stay for a single night in a city so it's a shame to have to leave without some videos from there. The X3000 is good for that. Way better the what gopro and DJI have been putting out so far.
I won't take a conventional camera with lens with me because of luggage space constraints and also because it complicates my life.

I really like still shots as well when we are on holidays and do a lot of snorkelling/scuba/water activities as i find we tend to look at the photos more so than the videos. Dont want footage or photos for posting, just for personal viewing. What would you recommend. Would the DJI suit for this this purpose or is it more for video rather than photos.

Technically speaking go pro has higher specs for still shots, but as far as action cameras go if that is your quality expectation I think you will be more than happy with the actions’s photos.

All the odd things this camera does drives me crazy. One thing that bothers me is if you do a livestream with a external mic the signal gets picked up and clicks in the audio the whole stream. Also the menu system is messy, like why is stabilization and pov in 2 seperate spots, lol.

Great info and points. Maybe DJI will see this and make some modifications. I’m always amazed at how different people’s use cases lead to unknown issues.

I was trying to read every comment before I posted, but I'm running out of time. 😂 I was researching the OAC3 when I came across your channel. Is the magnet mount on these solid? I've lost the same gp 3 times, luckily found each time. Each time was a different failure in the way I had it mounted. I'll look to see if you have a video of the OAC3 VS OAC4, but so far I haven't seen anything worth the price difference for me. I know I'm DONE with gp!

Magnet mount is super solid. The magnets only guide. The actual latching mechanism is dependable. Personally I’d still go with the action 4 because it can connect to the new dji mic 2 with Bluetooth and that could be very useful.

Can the front screen get unflipped ?

I do not know the answer to this one. I returned my action 4 and stuck with the insta360 go 3 instead.
