EDIT: To clarify, what i was trying to say for Con 1 is that you have to be careful with composition as it is a instinct to hold the Pocket to eye level. But a few people seem to have only latched on to my 1 example of viewing the screen. Having said that, A commenter suggested using it in flashlight mode as a solution that works and solves most of con 1. I think it's important to note that you can't or won't think of every solution for every problem. So that's what these videos and comments can be helpful as we help each other out. Seriously the headroom problem is easily solved by locking horizon, and tilting the camera when lowering. Alternatively, the joystick to tilt. Basic technique and not a camera limitation. The lack of articulating screen is a minor con in certain situations, but this is not the example i would use.
Con 1, not so much of an issue. Hold it horizontal to view display. More ergonomic to hold with ninja walk. Reminds me of my steadicam setup for the monitor at the bottom of the rig. (Missed the edited author comment) We love this camera. I bought 3 creator combos for family use when we were in Japan early this year.

@@MichaelNgvyenno, you actually don’t know how to use the joystick. It works to frame, and to use track with framing. Problem solved. Otherwise a good video, but you made the camera look bad and it’s not DJI’s fault.
I literally have this camera one day and that was the first thing that came to mind. You do not need to tilt the screen. You can literally tilt the camera itself and use the joystick 😂

Wait, but why are you holding vertically the handle? Isn’t the point of gimbal to move in axis? You can hold it 45 angle and see from a good vantage point without crouching.
I do agree with you on the "swipe", I'd like a larger screen especially so my fat fingers could manage the swipes quicker & easier. That said, I have the the custom setting "set" to my most common settings (i.e. C1,C2,C3). I would like some custom buttons instead; to your point. Agree on the ND's, these are a pain due to the size (TBH, I just use a 3 stop all the time and call it a day). For me, I'd like to see it redesigned to handle vertical content without a sensor crop. Also, a weather-sealed model.
Hey Stkuj! Yep I agree with everything you mentioned. I think they could implement the same scroll wheel/ button like they added on the Mic 2 transmitter module. I also do the same with the ND. Usually keep the ND32 on and have the auto iso do its thing. Unless its really dark. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave your thoughts!
At 2min. RE composition… You could also point the gimble down with the joystick… or if you really want the lower angle, you could also go into “flashlight” style holding and still be able to see the screen.

I came to point out the oversight on how to follow AND frame your subject, but it looks like others have already done so. That immediately made me go hmmm when the video started off with it as a con.
@MichaelNgvyen on your 1st clip you don’t have to bend to get her full in your clip, just stand straight tilt the whole op3 such that the screen is facing you & that way the camera lens will automatically face forward
There are lots of issues when engineering a removable battery in a device. When you look at modern battery tech vs the longevity of a device like this, you find that the battery isn't really an issue.
Thanks for this very practical deep dive. Ever since I stopped using my Powershot GX7III + gimbal, I haven’t had a travel camera outside my phone. My R5 just isn’t practical for this usage. This video is very informative, the Pocket 3 is still on my radar but will think about it more. Coming from Canon, I’m very much used to tactile and fast interfacing, so this is one thing I’ll need to keep in mind. Thanks again! Also to your (travel) partner for being a great sport!

regarding the ND Filter issue: I use the K&F variable ND filter, so I don’t need to take it off as often. Therefore it’s less smudged. Maybe you could look at this one😉
Honestly I tried t find some but I guess they weren’t as readily available when I got the Pocket 3. How do you like yours. Any weird cross x issues ? Or are they hard stop? Thanks for sharing your experience and watching the vid!
@@MichaelNgvyen At 5 stops it starts to happen very slightly so you have to make sure not to turn further, but in the video you don’t really notice it. For me I chose K&F over Freewell because you can turn the gimbal off without taking off the filter
Thank you Jalen! Yep I typically have the ND32 on always for daytime and let the iso auto adjust. For late golden hour or blue hour I find ND8 works good and nothing for lowlight scenes. Hope that helps. Appreciate your time watching the video!

Could you share what the cheaper mic options are that you mentioned? I've heard people complaining that the pocket 3 is not compatible with the mics they already own or they have to be manually plugged in to connect. I agree with you about how the cost of the dji mic makes it feel less affordable. But overall, this video was super helpful, thank you!
Hi Sophia. Yeah unfortunately only the DJI mic2 will connect without have a receiver plugged into the pocket 3. But the cheaper mic options you could look into is the Synco P2s. ( I have these). Or the Hollyland lark m2. Both those options have a very small receiver that plugs in and still keeps the pocket 3 setup small. And they are simple plug and play. Hope that helps. This was a good review especially about your thoughts around the standard version or the extras pack. It's good to know that it can last a full day and that it charges fast. I have a Rode mic and have seen that you can connect it to this pocket as well.

Pocket 3 is 2 steps forward, one step back. Max exposure time of 1 second is a big nono for me. I bought a second hand Pocket 2 and I’ll wait for the Pocket 4 (hoping for DJI to fix this big mistake by then).

your first cons i think is easily fix by joystick, which I always do to correct the proposition... even in tilt lock mode. anyway your long term reviews are valid.
Do you mean the for composition? I like to have my vertical lines straight so if I compose with the joystick and tilting the vertical lines starting to skew and converge? I use the ronin gimbals a lot so pretty familiar with double tap etc. I use it a lot to recenter but when you certain compositions you have to crouch over to see the screen of the pocket 3.. Really my only gripes are just the touch settings, and the fact that the battery isn't replaceable unless you do some warranty voiding methods or buy multiple battery grips to hold a decent charge down the line.

Hey Ravigza! Thank you for the comment and watching the video. I probably should’ve addressed the stabilization in this video, but I was planning on making a best practises video for best results from the Osmo pocket 3. But to answer your question, the camera is quite sensitive to the up-and-down bounce from your walk so to solve it you either need to walk really slow or have a really great ninja walk which when I was blogging on my travels, I didn’t feel like doing, but when I knew I needed a really smooth shot, I would do it. Post stabilization can really smooth out sort of the orbits or the tilt motions of the gimbal, but it doesn’t do a very good job with the walking bounce at all unfortunately. Hi. The Osmo pocket 4 wont be out for a while i don’t think. Honestly, Running with the isn’t great I have found. If you want smooth funning footage the digital stabilization of the Action is much nicer. Hope that helps!

On the battery question, I asked DJI this morning "if the main battery failed would the camera be no good to use" and the reply was " The additional spare battery purchased with the creator combo would power the camera if the main camera battery ever failed.
I think the problem was that he was saying certain things cos he is used to having certain things done a certain way with normal DSLR's on gimbals. Especially the first part where he said it would've been nice to have the screen tilt up when you just have to tilt the device forward for the camera to come up so you are looking straight at the screen instead of having to crouch or bend the knees. Great review though. Also for the battery problem, yes it is a justified con, but what I do with batteries or devices such as this with non removable batteries is that they will have gradual degradation which is in itself a reason to get it replaced during warranty which in this case is a 2 year warranty (DJI care plan) so get it replaced before it ends and it will last you another 3 years (which is generally the life span of batteries such as these). I've had the OP2 and it still works fine, and i haven't heard anyone, yet, at least saying that the batteries don't have a good life span. Generally speaking people usually upgrade these things to the newer one within a span of 4 to 5 years which is basically how long these will last.

Hi Kmaqueira. It can handle fast paced movements for sure but the gimbal can be a bit finicky. But with some practice it could for sure. I think if you want up close and personal. intense style shots the action 4 would be better.

@@kmaqueira I would say the Osmo Action might be better since the mounting options are better! there magnet options and mounting to a fence would be easy.
Maybe I’ve been lucky but I have had zero issues with it so far, it just the screen but the camera as a whole. And I don’t necessarily baby it either. Hope that helps.

Excellent video!! Very insightful and well done. One thing that drives me crazy, that I don't think you mentioned, is the "bounce". It clear in almost all of your shots, the up and down movement when walking. Is that something that "warp stabilizer" would get rid of, in Premiere Pro? Otherwise, you have to walk like a ninja, which can look funny in public. Hence drawing attention, which defeats the purpose of this camera being discreet. Idk...just some thoughts.
You are absolutely right. The bounce is not great. I should have mentioned it but I was planning to make best practices video for the Pocket 3. The bounce can sometimes be fixed with stabilization and sometimes not I have found. The best fix that I have found is to either walk very slow or do the ninja walk if you’re gonna be moving fast as you mentioned. If you walk slow, there’s not much of a bounce at all and can still be discreet. Anyways, I appreciate you watching. Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah you totally can. I like to keep my lines straight and parallel and that makes them converge. But in some situations it would definitely be fine. As some other people have mentioned, using it in flashlight mode would also help seeing the screen. I like to do a lot of crane style shots, where I start really low, push forward and start to raise the camera above my head. So in those situations, the flash mode doesn’t work for me because holding the camera above your head while the Osmo pocket is horizontal is super awkward.

Dude you have too much headspace and the fix is just to tilt the screen with the joystick. Or, double tap her head to track and push the joystick to frame correctly and it will stay and look awesome. My Pocket 2 even does this.
FLASHLIGHT MODE - Point 1. Hold the device pointing light a flashlight. Double click the center of joystick to recenter gimbal. Now you walk and video on the subject at a level you can see the screen, properly shoot your subject… AND you are less visible as a blogger. ;)

@@MichaelNgvyen to see the screen when holding it low move the camera all the way up and hold the osmo horizontally not vertical like you did at the beginning of the video, this also helps take out the jerky steps that you see in the footage, making it even smoother. Add a small ninja walk and you’re golden.

In regards to not being able to replace the battery so one has to buy a new one when it finally dies for good: the batteries do seem to have a fairly long life before that happens; however, I am reminded of US auto manufacturers of the last century--the cars were built with what we called 'planned obsolescence' which meant they wanted to cars to die at some point so people would be forced to buy another one. Fortunately, the Japanese car manufacturers built to last and forced the US plants to change. I don't really see that happening with DJI, but one can hope. I know I love my Pocket 3.

can the footage be used for instagram to. the same landscape footage. Im struggling to film in Landscape for youtube and use the same content (just cropped) for Instagram horizontal. If I'm far enough back o the screen I can crop it with no issues, but this camera is more of a vlog camera, meaning we are quite close to the screen. How could you crop vlogging footage on this camera so it could fit Instagram without it being blurred or just an extreme close-up of my face lol. Nobody wants that! :) I keep thinking the solution here is to 1, not film vlogs. 2, film separate for youtube (when vlogging) and separate for Instagram. Just use both footage when I can, i.e. when I'm away from the camera a bit. But it defeats the reason for having this camera. Can someone help!
I think you’ll eventually find a solution that works best for your workflow. But to give you insight on mine. When I am filming and vlogging talking to the pocket 3. I have my rule of thirds grid turned on and hold the camera as far back as I can, and I make sure I am in the middle thirds. When the horizontal footage is cropped for instagram. The framing is still good. A bit of space above my head down the middle of my chest. So not just a floating head lol. I film in 4k and I export the vertical footage for instagram in 1080 so the quality is still really good. Hope that helps.

Hey Mark! Thanks for watching. I think a pro build while keeping a similar form factor footprint could be nice. Do you mean a focal length of 35mm or something similar? I actually sometimes use the digital zoom so you can get a 28mm, 35mm or 40 mm look. The quality loss to my eye is very minimal especially if you film in 4k and export in 1080 for socials.

But I guess I didn't communicate what I meant well.. For some situations, to get good composition and to keep the vertical lines vertical and parallel, you have to lower the camera which causes you to have to hunch over to see the screen. If I kept it at eye level to see the screen and use the joystick button to angle down the camera the lines start to converge and I tend to not like that framing. Sure you have a point sometimes that works but dynamic framing like subject tracking doesn’t always work well. Sometimes it’s introduces some weird stutters and jerkiness and the shot feels robotic. It also doesn’t work well if you start low at the subjects feet moving forward and then crane to above their head. The tracking gets confused.

Exactly! I use the gimbal lock mode to move back & forth from vertical to horizontal. Works great 👍

Yep they have. Flashlight mode is a good solution. Not perfect for every situation but works for sure.

There are lots of issues when engineering a removable battery in a device. When you look at modern battery tech vs the longevity of a device like this, you find that the battery isn't really an issue.
Thanks for this very practical deep dive. Ever since I stopped using my Powershot GX7III + gimbal, I haven’t had a travel camera outside my phone. My R5 just isn’t practical for this usage. This video is very informative, the Pocket 3 is still on my radar but will think about it more. Coming from Canon, I’m very much used to tactile and fast interfacing, so this is one thing I’ll need to keep in mind. Thanks again! Also to your (travel) partner for being a great sport!

regarding the ND Filter issue: I use the K&F variable ND filter, so I don’t need to take it off as often. Therefore it’s less smudged. Maybe you could look at this one😉
Honestly I tried t find some but I guess they weren’t as readily available when I got the Pocket 3. How do you like yours. Any weird cross x issues ? Or are they hard stop? Thanks for sharing your experience and watching the vid!
@@MichaelNgvyen At 5 stops it starts to happen very slightly so you have to make sure not to turn further, but in the video you don’t really notice it. For me I chose K&F over Freewell because you can turn the gimbal off without taking off the filter

Could you share what the cheaper mic options are that you mentioned? I've heard people complaining that the pocket 3 is not compatible with the mics they already own or they have to be manually plugged in to connect. I agree with you about how the cost of the dji mic makes it feel less affordable. But overall, this video was super helpful, thank you!
Hi Sophia. Yeah unfortunately only the DJI mic2 will connect without have a receiver plugged into the pocket 3. But the cheaper mic options you could look into is the Synco P2s. ( I have these). Or the Hollyland lark m2. Both those options have a very small receiver that plugs in and still keeps the pocket 3 setup small. And they are simple plug and play. Hope that helps. This was a good review especially about your thoughts around the standard version or the extras pack. It's good to know that it can last a full day and that it charges fast. I have a Rode mic and have seen that you can connect it to this pocket as well.

Pocket 3 is 2 steps forward, one step back. Max exposure time of 1 second is a big nono for me. I bought a second hand Pocket 2 and I’ll wait for the Pocket 4 (hoping for DJI to fix this big mistake by then).

Do you mean the for composition? I like to have my vertical lines straight so if I compose with the joystick and tilting the vertical lines starting to skew and converge? I use the ronin gimbals a lot so pretty familiar with double tap etc. I use it a lot to recenter but when you certain compositions you have to crouch over to see the screen of the pocket 3.. Really my only gripes are just the touch settings, and the fact that the battery isn't replaceable unless you do some warranty voiding methods or buy multiple battery grips to hold a decent charge down the line.

Hey Ravigza! Thank you for the comment and watching the video. I probably should’ve addressed the stabilization in this video, but I was planning on making a best practises video for best results from the Osmo pocket 3. But to answer your question, the camera is quite sensitive to the up-and-down bounce from your walk so to solve it you either need to walk really slow or have a really great ninja walk which when I was blogging on my travels, I didn’t feel like doing, but when I knew I needed a really smooth shot, I would do it. Post stabilization can really smooth out sort of the orbits or the tilt motions of the gimbal, but it doesn’t do a very good job with the walking bounce at all unfortunately. Hope that answers your question. Thanks again for your time.

Hi. The Osmo pocket 4 wont be out for a while i don’t think. Honestly, Running with the isn’t great I have found. If you want smooth funning footage the digital stabilization of the Action is much nicer. Hope that helps!

On the battery question, I asked DJI this morning "if the main battery failed would the camera be no good to use" and the reply was " The additional spare battery purchased with the creator combo would power the camera if the main camera battery ever failed.

Point 1. Once you have your shot, press in the 5d joystick and the gimbal wont move, itll stay the shot you want until you take your thumb off.

I think the problem was that he was saying certain things cos he is used to having certain things done a certain way with normal DSLR's on gimbals. Especially the first part where he said it would've been nice to have the screen tilt up when you just have to tilt the device forward for the camera to come up so you are looking straight at the screen instead of having to crouch or bend the knees. Great review though.
Also for the battery problem, yes it is a justified con, but what I do with batteries or devices such as this with non removable batteries is that they will have gradual degradation which is in itself a reason to get it replaced during warranty which in this case is a 2 year warranty (DJI care plan) so get it replaced before it ends and it will last you another 3 years (which is generally the life span of batteries such as these). I've had the OP2 and it still works fine, and i haven't heard anyone, yet, at least saying that the batteries don't have a good life span. Generally speaking people usually upgrade these things to the newer one within a span of 4 to 5 years which is basically how long these will last.

Hi Kmaqueira. It can handle fast paced movements for sure but the gimbal can be a bit finicky. But with some practice it could for sure. I think if you want up close and personal. intense style shots the action 4 would be better.

Maybe I’ve been lucky but I have had zero issues with it so far, it just the screen but the camera as a whole. And I don’t necessarily baby it either. Hope that helps.

Excellent video!! Very insightful and well done. One thing that drives me crazy, that I don't think you mentioned, is the "bounce". It clear in almost all of your shots, the up and down movement when walking. Is that something that "warp stabilizer" would get rid of, in Premiere Pro? Otherwise, you have to walk like a ninja, which can look funny in public. Hence drawing attention, which defeats the purpose of this camera being discreet. Idk...just some thoughts.
You are absolutely right. The bounce is not great. I should have mentioned it but I was planning to make best practices video for the Pocket 3. The bounce can sometimes be fixed with stabilization and sometimes not I have found. The best fix that I have found is to either walk very slow or do the ninja walk if you’re gonna be moving fast as you mentioned. If you walk slow, there’s not much of a bounce at all and can still be discreet. Anyways, I appreciate you watching. Thanks for the feedback.
Quick question for ya for the first issue u had can't you just toggle the camera to aim down a bit?
Yeah you totally can. I like to keep my lines straight and parallel and that makes them converge. But in some situations it would definitely be fine. As some other people have mentioned, using it in flashlight mode would also help seeing the screen. I like to do a lot of crane style shots, where I start really low, push forward and start to raise the camera above my head. So in those situations, the flash mode doesn’t work for me because holding the camera above your head while the Osmo pocket is horizontal is super awkward.

I find the highlights blow out easy so I keep it at -0.3 in bright conditions. In the golden and blue hour it’s at 0.0. Hope that helps!

I have had the pocket 3 for 1 day today and the footage looks very meh so far. Spoiled with my full frame Sony sensors I guess.

All the footage is shot in D log then colour graded.
Dude you have too much headspace and the fix is just to tilt the screen with the joystick. Or, double tap her head to track and push the joystick to frame correctly and it will stay and look awesome. My Pocket 2 even does this.
FLASHLIGHT MODE - Point 1. Hold the device pointing light a flashlight. Double click the center of joystick to recenter gimbal. Now you walk and video on the subject at a level you can see the screen, properly shoot your subject… AND you are less visible as a blogger. ;)

@@MichaelNgvyen to see the screen when holding it low move the camera all the way up and hold the osmo horizontally not vertical like you did at the beginning of the video, this also helps take out the jerky steps that you see in the footage, making it even smoother. Add a small ninja walk and you’re golden.

In regards to not being able to replace the battery so one has to buy a new one when it finally dies for good: the batteries do seem to have a fairly long life before that happens; however, I am reminded of US auto manufacturers of the last century--the cars were built with what we called 'planned obsolescence' which meant they wanted to cars to die at some point so people would be forced to buy another one. Fortunately, the Japanese car manufacturers built to last and forced the US plants to change. I don't really see that happening with DJI, but one can hope. I know I love my Pocket 3.
I definitely think they hope that we will eventually have to replace it. Capitalism 😂

Does the Rode mic work with it?
The rode wireless go mic does but you will have to connect the transmitter with usbc cable. A little less clean than a transmitter with built in usbc
can the footage be used for instagram to. the same landscape footage. Im struggling to film in Landscape for youtube and use the same content (just cropped) for Instagram horizontal. If I'm far enough back o the screen I can crop it with no issues, but this camera is more of a vlog camera, meaning we are quite close to the screen. How could you crop vlogging footage on this camera so it could fit Instagram without it being blurred or just an extreme close-up of my face lol. Nobody wants that! :) I keep thinking the solution here is to 1, not film vlogs. 2, film separate for youtube (when vlogging) and separate for Instagram. Just use both footage when I can, i.e. when I'm away from the camera a bit. But it defeats the reason for having this camera. Can someone help!
I think you’ll eventually find a solution that works best for your workflow. But to give you insight on mine. When I am filming and vlogging talking to the pocket 3. I have my rule of thirds grid turned on and hold the camera as far back as I can, and I make sure I am in the middle thirds. When the horizontal footage is cropped for instagram. The framing is still good. A bit of space above my head down the middle of my chest. So not just a floating head lol. I film in 4k and I export the vertical footage for instagram in 1080 so the quality is still really good. Hope that helps.

Hey Mark! Thanks for watching. I think a pro build while keeping a similar form factor footprint could be nice. Do you mean a focal length of 35mm or something similar? I actually sometimes use the digital zoom so you can get a 28mm, 35mm or 40 mm look. The quality loss to my eye is very minimal especially if you film in 4k and export in 1080 for socials.

@@markshirley01 Yes, a few people in the comments have pointed out that I could frame using the joystick or suggesting that I don't know about the joystick lol. But I guess I didn't communicate what I meant well.. For some situations, to get good composition and to keep the vertical lines vertical and parallel, you have to lower the camera which causes you to have to hunch over to see the screen. If I kept it at eye level to see the screen and use the joystick button to angle down the camera the lines start to converge and I tend to not like that framing. For creative shots sure but not always.. hope that makes sense? Thanks for

No dynamic framing? I get what you were saying but bending down as the fix without a mention of dynamic framing? Can’t take this video seriously.
Sure you have a point sometimes that works but dynamic framing like subject tracking doesn’t always work well. Sometimes it’s introduces some weird stutters and jerkiness and the shot feels robotic. It also doesn’t work well if you start low at the subjects feet moving forward and then crane to above their head. The tracking gets confused.
