Great points here!! Personally for me, the 7 stops of ND is perfect. For my work, if I need more stops than it most likely means I’m trying to shoot too wide open and need to close down. I think a lot of people forget that most films aren’t shot at f1.2 haha. Of course depends on taste and workflow. I personally prefer f2.8 and up. Specially for my fashion work cause I don’t want the clothing to be out of focus. And then for narrative and documentary work, I want the location to be visible and not just all blurred out.

    • @damiencooper
      @damiencooper  Год назад +2

haha, I am def. guilty of shooting wide open too often. But I also really like wide angle lenses. And the combination of being able to shoot at a low t-stop AND having a wide angle is something I really love

@@damiencooper oh def. I wish I could shoot at like 12-20mm at f1.2 hahaha. Just to help create that separation. I just try to get as close as possible to my subject when that wide to increase the subject or background distance. But yeah totally understand that! It becomes one of those things for me.. so I wanna use a zoom and not switch.. or get max bokeh at ultra wide..

I agree. 1.2 is usually nice for some very detailled shots or b-roll, in which case I usually have a bit more control over lighting anyway. For documentary work 2.8 is usually the bare minimum, bit even 4 or 5.6 is better in those cases, at which point I sometimes want more light instead of less 😂

Regarding the FX6 having "only" 7 stops of ND - it's plenty for 90% of shooting situations, and when it isn't I just have a good quality 4-stop nd on the lens for the duration of the shoot. This is hugely different from having to use a variable ND on the lens, with all the artefacting they produce. FX6 still wins here for me, because of the ability to dial in the exact ND needed.

As a low budget/indie filmmaker, I've been looking at the FX6 and C70 for a while now. The one factor that keeps steering me towards the C70 is its form factor. Because the C70 looks like a DSLR, it's easier to shoot in public places without drawing unwanted attention. For low budget filmmaking, that is a huge advantage.
For high end filmmaking, I would love to shoot with the ARRI Alexa 35 or the Sony Venice 2. But, in the meantime, I am more likely to lean to the FX6 or C70.

I was a wedding/event shooter but was blessed to get into local tv work and have been making 77 episodes and 7 tv shows for the past 2.5 years. For me I prefer to stick with Canon. The C70 was the perfect camera for me when it released why? 1) it is a versatile camera, it can be full frame and be great in low light and be a crop sensor and get me that extra reach. A 300mm can become 480mm. It does make a difference. Full frame and shallow dof isn’t everything for me, it helps, but content is king. We would be shooting F4 most of the time tbh. But depending on the work, we do shoot f2 to f5.6 or even f8. (2) its size - try traveling as light as possible when you need to bring minimum 3-6 lights, 5-9 cameras and a bunch of tripods, cards, stands, etc. Furthermore you have everything on the body itself especially the nd filters. (3) the dynamic range. Usually for our work, because of schedule, pressure, etc, people make mistakes. But the C70’s dynamic range have saved my @$$ more times than I would admit. Especially because we have so many camera operators someone is bound to mess up at some point. (4) I already have 30+ canon lenses, both EF and RF. It will be stupid of me to jump here and there once a manufacturer have a slight edge over the other. (5) the c70 keeps getting better and better with each firmware update. But if I were to start alllllll over again? Maybe I’ll just get 10 fx30 due to the price and festures and call it a day. My needs is not the same as others cos I’m not shooting for Netflix so… there’s that. But interesting video to know how you work with your gear. Love your videos. Never missed one. Ever.

biggest downside I've noticed to the FX6 is mainly the size for traveling. You have to get pretty creative if you want to fit an FX6, a second camera, lenses for both and monitors for both (as well as any extras you need for shooting) into a single, flyable case. It's 100% possible (I've done it) but I'd imagine it's far more difficult than trying to fit the same kit with a C70. a small nitpick that still occasionally drives me crazy is that you can't stop the FX6 from writing 8 tracks of audio, even if 6 of them are blank and you've disabled any microphones from recording to those tracks. editing multiple video layers whenever each clip has 8 attached audio tracks is beyond annoying. it's a limitation of the internal codec Sony uses and sounds like a small gripe, but when you have to disable 6/8 audio tracks everytime you edit, it gets pretty old pretty quick.

Hey another great video! Love the new consistency of outputting so much content! Regarding the last thought about having canon or Sony and the chances that the camera you have will decide will you get the job. From my experience in this level of cameras that it rarely matters. Usually it only matters if a client or a production company wants to have all the same cameras and then they chose one over another for that reasons. In higher productions that could matter but then we are talking a more expensive cameras and in that segment canon is less popular than RED, Alexa or Sony. But I never heard someone didn’t get a job for shooting with c70 or fx6. Most of DPs anyway don’t work on serious projects with their cameras since rental prices for RED and even Arri are not that terible.

While the variable ND on the Sony is great, nobody mentions that it only kicks in at two stops - below that you have to disengage the ND. Shooting in the UK with cloudy, changeable weather, between 0-2 stops is where I would most like to have variable ND! Also I find the fact that you can’t change your ISO in Cine-EI mode in S-log3, very restrictive. So I end up stuck, needing to lower my exposure by a little, but having no ND option and no ISO option just at that point. It’s a pain! Why Sony are so restrictive with ISO’s in S-Log3 is beyond me, as BM doesn’t do this, nor Canon, to my knowledge. Would love someone to invent a variable ND between 0-2 stops as well as 2-6 stops - this would be a killer feature.
Apart from that, I would get the Sony Fx6 over the Canon mainly because since the Fs7, people often ask to shoot on a Sony and never on a Canon - a shame, because I prefer the current Canon range overall, though it’s a close run thing.

Shocked to see you think C70 ND is better than electronic ND on FX6. Sure, you gave an example of shooting wide open in a hot desert mid day but how often do you do that? If thats all you do, then cool I guess. But for everyone else, the fact that we can keep the camera settings the same and auto expose to changing lighting conditions in a scene by using electronic variable ND is so much more useful than having 8-10 stop ND. Honestly, thats a game changer. With C70, if you choose an ND you cant change it without ruining the shot as the filter slides in and out of the shot. And it achieves 8-10 stops by stacking at a very noticeable drop in quality due to refraction. There's a reason why Canon calls them "extended" stop ND.
Also, I didn't find the real life DR advantage I was looking for in C70 hence I sold it. I really expected more from the DGO sensor even though it comes with worse rolling shutter than FX3/FX6. They distribute the stops differently, so yes if you expose on Sony the same way as C70 you can think C70 has half a stop extra DR but when you expose them individually how they should be, they are pretty much the same and they're both good in that regard. If FX3/FX6 dynamic range is good enough Greg Fraser and Gareth Edwards to shoot a Hollywood sci fi, its safe to say we have nothing to complain about.

I'm really surprised people don't run out of ND more often. I shot multiple Interviews indoor wide open where I had to go to ND8. Outdoors in summer I'm never below ND8 even when not using a super fast lens.

I am a dp and mostly shoot on Canon (because I own them) and Arris and I had to work with Sony 3 times. Honestly, I felt like they were stuck in the 2000s. Color science sucks, file format is a problem. It's personal, but I hate Sony Glass as well. And regarding NDs that is never a problem cause I never use them. I always go with a Mattbox anyway. I mean you need built in VNds for videography only. And I would strongly disagree with Sony's night performance. Low light is especially bad in Sonys.. way too much noise and color distortion on high ISOs

I think that’s subjective. I am a Sony shooter and I would agree with you before 2020 and the latest generation of Sony cameras, that Canon had a distinct advantage in image quality. I’ve always admired Canon colors. And still do. Currently though, (Image wise) I think they’re both incredible and comparable. Side by side you can definitely have a preference but if you were to look at both images separately you would think both looked great. Sony’s color science has improved since 2020 (A7ISIII and after) but I still prefer the Canon colors.

Axel, in case you haven't decided yet, the FX6 has 30-second cache recording (i.e. when you hit 'record' it saves whatever happened in the previous thirty seconds), which I would say is essential if you shoot wildlife. Used it a couple of times on deer and owls.

    • @damiencooper

As I understand it, Canon doesn't allow brands to produce RF lenses with AF. Manual, yes. So anamorphics are usually coming out in RF as well. However, you can't use the full frame RF lenses on the C70 with the speedbooster (or at least not full frame) So it is always hit and miss and keeps being complicated

  •  Год назад

I had the fx6 and it was difficult. I used the crane 3s gimbal, so gimbals were no problem for me, mics neither becaue i could leave the top handle on at all times and with the mic rubber thing you can get basically everywhere all mics fit ... BUT my biggest problem was 8bit long gop, no wifi image transmission ( with the fx3 i can simply give the client a tablet and they have a picture) more noise than the fx3, no audio in slowmo, the ultra shitty white balancing, catalyst browse is amazing but people are to stupid for that so they really need to make a free plugin version. And tbh since i use the ronin 4d the button layouts of all other cameras seem absolutely stupid. same goes for both the canon and the sony. the integration of video transmission ect. ... in my eyes i would not buy any of them the fx6 has too many flaws, and canon has that weird mount problem... I would go ronin 4d any day of the week
