FX3 is quite more nimble and light and good for hand or gimbal use, which then again has its own perks and advantages. Both cameras are excellent but have their own uses. Overall FX6 is a bigger brother and therefore without much surprise is a better camera, but due to its size its not applicable to use everywhere, where as fx3 in a small rig setup will perform and make those quality shots that make a huge difference in a project. Super insightful video! How would you recommend setting up the FX3 for outdoor shooting with changing light when you are in front of the camera (ie I can't monitor or make any changes). Is there a way to use a wide aperture, and auto exposure or iso? Thanks!
I’ve never tried, but I’ll give it a shot, but if I’m guessing they sorta sounds like you wanted to shoot in aperture priority in video instead of manual ?
@@KofiYeboah thanks for the response! I’m trying to figure out how I can film outdoors with constant aperture, and automatically adjust for changing light. Because I’m not behind the camera I would like the iso to adjust automatically, but I’m not sure if that will result in a poor image with the Fx3. What do you suggest? I wish the Fx3 had an electronic nd like the fx6😀
I have both the fx6 and fx3 HOWEVER i use Final Cut Pro to edit all my videos and don’t plan on switching softwares. The fx6 footage in Final Cut Pro gets compressed so bad that I haven’t even had the chance to fully see the potential the fx6 is capable of. for that reason the fx3 has been my go to camera while the fx6 sadly collects dust 💔
Fantastic video. I love the topics you choose (I’m an FX3 user, so this was especially good for me) and your friendly, conversational approach. Thank you!
I currently have the Panasonic S5iix. I love it. But I am realizing I am needing Internal NDs with SDI ports for alot of gigs I am doing so I am selling my S5iix to upgrade to the FX6.
It seems like once you have an FX6 the 3 would be great for things like drone shots or to use as a "B" camera rather than getting the same sequence from a different angle and having to edit separate takes together.
I have clients who don't really have an opinion about which cameras I bring to the shoot. I own the FS7 and an EX3. I do two camera interviews and although there is a slight color difference between the two, it's not a big deal matching them in Resolve.
We use an A7siii and a fx3 for all our work (tv, streaming services, and internet) and want to upgrade to the fx6. Even tho we have the money for it, we always buy something else like lighting and grip gear because the upgrades you get from the fx6 is all convenience and not quality. Probably just wait for the fx6 markii (or whatever they will call it) since we're in no rush to upgrade even tho we really want to lol
Bro, you just got a new subscriber. Thanks for the comparison. I have been using fuji xt4 and am considering switching to sony system for mainly video, film work as I wish to pursue that as business. I am considering both, plus perhaps a7s4 which is coming in q3. It was cool to hear your thoughts on both.
Thanks for the video. I notice you're hand held in a lot of the shots. Do you have a video talking about when you film hand held Vs on a gimbal Vs tripod?
It feels weird to compare them, even if you have the same image quality the FX6 has a lot more capable features. Timecode, proper audio ports and the ability to change the exposure and other stuff without crimping your hands.
I currently have an a6500. Been using it since like 2016/2017. Needed something that was equally as good for photos and videos cause that's the type of work I was getting. I'm looking to upgrade to a fx6 now to focus more on video content. The fx3 is tempting too but the build of the fx6 is what got me. I usually run smaller crews so things like sdi & ND's i tink will be more valueable over time even though it's more expensive. The new film the creator directed by gareth edwards DP Greig Frasier with John David Washington was filmed mosly on fx3. Would be dope to get your take on that. If fx3 is good enough for a oscar winning DP then it's for sure a cinema camera, nuff said lol
Idk if it’s mostly on the fx3 right now there’s no confirmed account from Grieg how much of the movie is on it ( the Alexa 65 is also listed which I’m sure was the primary based on the amount of vfx) but I gotcha !
I wouldn’t call it a cinecam just because a movie was filmed on it. There was an award winning Hollywood movie filmed with the A7sii, that’s not a cine cam though. Both cameras lack essential cine-cam features and utility
As I am still learning, I was interested to hear you turn to the common and, for me, mysterious complaint about "lack of shutter angle" (at 6:59). Do folks mean there is a setting on some cameras that keeps shutter speed/frame rate ratio constant no matter the change in frame rate? Surely they are not complaining that their camera reports shutter speed in fractions of a second instead of degrees? I might be out of the loop as I shoot my films on very modest cameras (Fuji X-T3 and X-T4).
Great video as always bro! I have the Fx30 and I'm looking to upgrade to the Fx3 even though I know we're due for a new Fx3 within the next year or so. So i'm trying to decide do I hold off. But what your video definitely solidified is that the Fx6 is not for me AT ALL (at this current phase of life) because I just don't think it's conducive to my style of running and gunning.
Hi next Thursday I will to record a gym video, can you tell me some tips because you’re an expert doing that. I have an s3 24, 35, 50mm GM ronin, but i love me movements of your gum videos.
I have an FX3 and I love that camera. I am looking to purchase an FX6 soon but I don't think it will replace my FX3. Different tools for different situations.
@KofiYeboah I'm in a pickle right now where I'm getting offers to get all my gear sold. A 6k pro, GH5, and my 5D Mark IV. As well as a bunch of lenses for all. I'd want to simplify and have less gear. Very hard to figure out do I get a fx3 or a fx6. Neither do everything I need it to do.
Thanks for the breakdown Kofi. I wanted to ask if you had any other piece of rigging equipment to mount the fx6 monitor on the back of the top handle. Thanks.
Great video and well explained. The funny thing is I stubbled upon your video trying to see if it was worth upgrading from my Sony A7siii to the FX3... If so, I wonder if the a7siii would be a good B cam for it or if that was pointless. I would love to hear your thoughts about it.
Never really cared what manufacturers or users called a camera. "Cinema Camera" "Video Camera" "Hybrid Camera" Humans seem to have a pathological mania to categorize and put everything into a labeled box, which is actually a dysfunction and a sign of intellectual insecurity IMHO. In the end, none of this crap matters, all that matters is what you can do with the tool. Your footage looks great and the FX3 and FX6 are excellent imaging tools. What Sony and the world at large need to categorize them as is immaterial to me, I just want to use them to tell moving stories and create memorable images.
Hi Kofi! I hope you get the chance to see this message. I just got the FX6 and noticed more noise at 12800 compared to my FX3. Did you turn on noise suppression when you had the FX6 and did you choose low, medium, or high? Thanks for your time.
in terms of the the noise reduction software on the camera would you recommend not using Cine EI on the fx3 if you want a smoother image that would be closer to the fx6?
Hey brother, great video as always!! Love your content. I believe that the FX3 vs FX6 is a true David vs Goliath Story. I own both and the beauty of this is that I am not a RUclipsr my comments is from working full time in video production with both and in true honesty we need to stop comparing the two. I believe in the right tool for the right job, in my profesional opinion and I said profesional because that’s what I do 24/7 they both fit in different spaces all though they both can live in the same places I am going to mention. FX3 lives in the more fast pace environment (Weddings, Profesional Social Content, gimbal for bigger jobs and as a great B camera in corporate production) for me The FX6 is for more Corporate, bigger production where you have a crew despite how many people use it for handheld in my eyes this camera belongs on sticks rigged out but that just me and that’s how I Operate mines but I tell you this, despite the FX6 being a real cinema camera and the FX3 not because that’s the honest truth! 8 out of 10 times I gravitate more towards the FX3 every single time for these reasons ( Better codec options, stabilization with Sony glass will always win over the FX6 no matter how heavy you make it, it’s lighter so I move faster for fitness videos, the ability to capture the moment right away all of us who operate the FX6 knows that’s a true statement) the FX6 was my dream camera and now that I own it and make money with it, I kinda love the FX3 more lol but that’s just me!!!
Thanks homie! In my honest opinion, a camera is suited for whatever application you want it to be for😅, somethings are more or less convenient, but if any thing can be said it’s that they’re all just tools for whatever you want 😅
I love your videos so much! Can I make a contribution to your content? I have to listen to your videos in .75 speed because I’m new to the game and don’t t understand what all the letters and numbers mean. Could you speak a touch slower? Or if you didn’t want to that, could you place more information in text on the screen? When you compare to items, they still look the same to me. But no mind, because I will watch anyways. Love your teaching style!🎉
I am still using a7 III s 😁 and a7 siii. I like the fx3 but at the moment it's too much money first the a7 siii must giveme the money bag that I have invest
Kofi great video as usual my friend. I'm team FX3 and it's for a number of reasons. As you mentioned the lack of flexibility in the codecs in the FX6 makes it a lot less appealing to me, at the very least it would've been nice if they had added XAVC-S which surely they could've. ALL-I on the FX6 are such big files and didn't make sense for my workflow. I had two a7SIII, ended up selling one then ended up selling the other to get the FX3. So far no regrets, really loving everything about it. Now and then I will try and look through the EVF and realise oh damn this ain't the a7SIII ha ha. Though, I do have the a7IV which for me is still a king hybrid camera. I do wonder though if we will see a firmware update with shutter angle for the FX3 in a future update and maybe Sony compressed RAW? that would be the day. Regarding client perception, I just ordered couple vlocks and rigging out the FX3 once done it'll pretty much look a lot 'like a bigger cinema camera. Though also allow me to not need to keep changing the batteries so often. That's one thing that was on my mind and what I noticed was the FX3 seems to drain the battery a lot quicker than my a7SIII. Anyway, great video as always!
Thanks ! And yeah I hope we get an Xavcs for when I don’t want to spend TERABYTES backing up footage but we’ll see 😅 Hopefully they do, everyone’s really hung up on shutter angle 😅
The FX3 is not a cinema camera…. Gareth Edwards; ‘Hold my beer!’ … the fact is when you know what your doing it doesn’t matter what equipment you use, it’s better to master light and production skills than focus on gear.
For me built in ND filters are for ENG (like the old Betacams) and Documentary cameras...., cinema cameras make image quality the number one priority. The rest of the camera and gear should be modular. There is no way built in filters are as good as 5x4 glass...., Built in filters are like buying a Porsche GT3 and using the stock rims for racing.
@@KofiYeboah The sony's have a interesting internal processing because the colors are cool and the highlight rolloff can be a bit harsh in high contrast scenes. I shoot narrative so I'm looking for different things from a camera compared to you who does so many things!

Tbh, i wish people would get practical with it. The fx3 is not a cinema camera because it lacks the features that have become essentisl for that format and are part of cameras for that format. There are ways to workaround them, but the term "cinema camera" is used to describe a class of cameras that come with those features and not just a decription of the image quality. And to be frank, I think the argument is being distorted when people say any camera is a cinema camera if you can press record on it. The fx3 is a fine camera, one that can get "cinematic" images from, but it lacks many of the features, software and hardware, that makes it not so. It shouldnt bruise anyones ego of the camera they have isnt commongly called a cinema camera. To add to this, its sad that sony is taking so long to add these software feautures that would help bridge that gap and im glad that people are calling it out on those missing features when others are willing to slap the word "cinema" or "cinematic" on things they like all because they wanna feel part of the club.
@Kofi Yeboah I agree but I think it being labelled as a cinema camera is misleading at best. It's better to be aware of the features it doesn't have to make sure people are making an informed decision. Good video BTW, I hope I don't sound harsh or anything but I do think the fx3 is being labelled as something it isn't. Same goes for the sigma fp, S5II, and BMPCC cameras. They are all amazing cameras and it doesn't need to be mislabelled for us to know its still great. Biggest hurdle for starters is being misled about this stuff to then realise that they could survive on a £300-£700 camera given that the features on these "cinema" cameras is acc not gonna bridge that professional gap for them.
@@adeloyearts205 unless the term is a sliding definition based on societal circumstances, kinda like “filmmmaker” no one’s shooting on film but based on the changes of how we access and use, the definition changes like anything else really
@Kofi Yeboah completely agreed but as they change, what counts as them also changes. As it stands and under the commongly used cinema cameras, the fx3 alongside many mirror less just aren't cinema cameras. Which is fine. They are absolutely capable of making films and making films that could end up on the big screen but they just don't have those shared features.

@@jeffb8824 it won’t I don’t think BUT the iso can only go so low if you’re still over exposed at iso100 you might have problems still 👎🏾
I have both the fx6 and fx3 HOWEVER i use Final Cut Pro to edit all my videos and don’t plan on switching softwares.
The fx6 footage in Final Cut Pro gets compressed so bad that I haven’t even had the chance to fully see the potential the fx6 is capable of. for that reason the fx3 has been my go to camera while the fx6 sadly collects dust 💔
Ah man that’s unfortunate!
Great video. My company is currently researching replacing our FS5, and we're on the fence for FX3 or FX6.
Glad it helped 👍🏾
It's funny how long I've been weighing these two until last night when I finally deep dived the Ronin 4D and now I think I'll just get that...
As long as the tool fits
Fantastic video. I love the topics you choose (I’m an FX3 user, so this was especially good for me) and your friendly, conversational approach. Thank you!
Oh thank you!
I'm about to switch from Canon to Sony and I think the first cinema line camera I'm going to purchase is the Sony FX30. Great video.
Thanks ! Glad it helped !
I currently have the Panasonic S5iix. I love it. But I am realizing I am needing Internal NDs with SDI ports for alot of gigs I am doing so I am selling my S5iix to upgrade to the FX6.
Oooh enjoy !
@@KofiYeboah thanks so much!!
It seems like once you have an FX6 the 3 would be great for things like drone shots or to use as a "B" camera rather than getting the same sequence from a different angle and having to edit separate takes together.
Both I guess ! I’ve used them in tandem in so many ways, anything goes
I have clients who don't really have an opinion about which cameras I bring to the shoot. I own the FS7 and an EX3. I do two camera interviews and although there is a slight color difference between the two, it's not a big deal matching them in Resolve.
That’s dope 👍🏾
We use an A7siii and a fx3 for all our work (tv, streaming services, and internet) and want to upgrade to the fx6. Even tho we have the money for it, we always buy something else like lighting and grip gear because the upgrades you get from the fx6 is all convenience and not quality.
Probably just wait for the fx6 markii (or whatever they will call it) since we're in no rush to upgrade even tho we really want to lol
That’s a good way about it !
Thanks homie !
Where did you hear it was coming in Q3? Lol.. most rumors have been about Sony killing that camera in favor of the FX3 line.
Thanks for the video. I notice you're hand held in a lot of the shots. Do you have a video talking about when you film hand held Vs on a gimbal Vs tripod?
Coming soon!
in the perfect world as an independent filmmaker i would have both cause some scenes require a lighter smaller camera at times.....
I am learning how to do videos on my Fuji Xh2s cameras. Coming from stills, it's a little daunting.
It feels weird to compare them, even if you have the same image quality the FX6 has a lot more capable features.
Timecode, proper audio ports and the ability to change the exposure and other stuff without crimping your hands.
That’s the point! After a certain point it’s just a workflow thing that you’re paying for 🫡
I currently have an a6500.
Lol no you’re correct 😅 to me it’s not a huge deal but people hate that it’s not there
needed to see this one, thank you for the input
No problem!
Honestly that’s so okay man ! The whole point of these videos is to help people see what fits their unique workflow
That makes sense !

My noise suppression is actually off 👍🏾
Team Sony FX30!
in terms of the the noise reduction software on the camera would you recommend not using Cine EI on the fx3 if you want a smoother image that would be closer to the fx6?
You could! IT’s situational

Good call!
Sir fx 6 prise ?

Nice video Kofi!
Thanks ! And yeah I hope we get an Xavcs for when I don’t want to spend TERABYTES backing up footage but we’ll see 😅
Hopefully they do, everyone’s really hung up on shutter angle 😅

Internal ND alone puts the fx6 miles ahead of the fx3.
Idk about miles with the true colour NDs available, but it’s handy!

I mean , I’ve not heard many people complain about built ins in terms of colour 🤷🏾♂️

Tbh I don’t think it’s a big deal😅
