I feel like I didn't explain myself well enough in the intro. We 100% could have gotten the other carbs to idle but both had cracked fuel bowls and we discovered the 2nd carb had a blocked idle passage after tearing it apart.
@@darryl3767 Cool! I saw the video where he had a few options and that was one of them. I never seen one before but it seemed like a rope being compressed would eat up whatever uneven problem there might be, better than anything else. I just wonder how they hold over time? I wonder if they seep, being that they're rope? I should go watch it, maybe he explains how they work and if they last.
Try the fel pro high pressure rear main seal and for reference watch "nicks garage " he has so many videos on big block rear main seal installation. I have about the exact same build as your 440 ( different cam) . Yours sounds like it's going to be fun on the streets!
Hey you two, I'd look at it this way: 1% of that big block failed, 99% of that big block is a success...I'd say that makes it a pretty dang-good build!!!
Check out Nick's Garage on RUclips. He had a big block Mopar that came in with a bad rear main leak. He went through several seals until he found the style that worked.
Sorry about that guys. It happens. Everyone has visions of a perfect build with a flawless startup, like so many videos on the internet. The reality is, they don't all go that way, for whatever reason. It's just part of the deal. Everyone has been through it. You'll get it right, though. That's what the engine run stand is for. I can't tell you how many times my friends and I have put an engine in a car, and had to pull it because of some oil leak, coolant leak, or some bullshit. I wish I had an engine run stand back then. Looking forward to the next one! Holy crap does that engine sound good, though! WOW! Me likey!
Ponch 400, I put that same engine in my '78 Special Edition T/A. Besides my '69 RR, that T/A is the best car I ever owned. We all make mistakes, you will get the leak fixed. 512 sounds bad-ass btw.
Dulcich has some good info on RB rear mains , I always use permatex brush on aviation sealer on the back side of seal on bock side and cap side, so does Steve .
Darn it man! Sounded too cool. That engine stand has pretty much paid for itself. Now Chin Up! Not the end of the world. You guys will get it straightened out.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,gotta be an easy 600 + foot pounds of tree stump yankin TORQUE.....................................................................................................................
You guys are doing great. There are always obstacles in engine building but as long as you have faith, you guys will succeed always. You guys are awesome 😎 God bless.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,So many positive words can describe the passion these two have for machinery..................I welcome them to my gearhead family.............People I may never meet , yet our passions sync ....You mention , Faith......The believe , the core , all other virtues follow the faith........
Thanks This The Great Video & Channel & Car Cruising / Event ! Hello From Finland ! Have a Car Channel too ! All The Best & Respect & Content & Passion & Love 2024 !
WOW - BOY HOWDY DOES THAT THANG SOUND GOOD ! Sorry to hear about the oil leak but that stuff happens and you'll figure it out thanks for the video and again congratulations !
That aluminum radiator on the engine room wall would look real nice on your engine test stand. That garden hose rig won't cool the motor properly. You'll get hot spots from air pockets in the block and heads using that system. The water pump needs to be turning also.
GSS, boy was it a great idea to engine-stand test that big block! I had almost completely installed a "Rebuilt" engine when it started to leak oil! It was a cracked block from a pro-shop! They came through with another block at no charge to transfer all the good bits and it may still be running. (Sold the Car a year later) All the best you guys!
I have a buddy who is running a very similar engine with Indy heads . He's running a Proform 1050 carb and his car is a ripper . Dynoed at right around 700 / 700 . 73 Charger
O wow, so now I know where Westcoast engine ended up at. They did some rebuilds, but too far now for me. Bummer cause I have a Pontiac 421 HO needing rebuild.
My Gen2 Hemi has a chronic rear main seal leak, I've had it apart 5 times, still leaks so I'm currently having the engine rebuilt, I think blow-by is the culprit. I never had this problem with Wedge engines. A vacuum pump or evac hoses from the valve covers to the header collectors helps alot. I hope and pray you have good luck with the FST carburetor, mine ran like garbage, ended up spending $950 on a different brand. My FST would idle good but it wouldn't rev no matter what I tried, and I know my way around carbs.
Bummer, I have 2 of those seals on the shelf, I was gonna use one on my 528 Hemi...I wasn't planning on using RTV on the seal...I haven't read the instructions yet...I wouldn't do it this way...but if that is what the instructions say.
You should be able to spin new gasket on. Did u use grease or vaseline on seal contact surface. So it doesn't start dry and burn up the rubber. Does this aftermarket seal go on, only one way direction. Oil seemed to come out after engine was up to temperature
99% A vacuum crankcase ventilation system will stop the leak. New rings have blowby. You could modify the oil return passage through the rear Maine cap. I don't think it is the seal itself nice try just a little more trickery it will be fine.
Did you linebore the mains? When you do, the main cap groove for the seal are not in centre anymore. That can cause a world of hurt with too tight in the block and too loose in the cap. Aka the deapth of the groove compared to the seal.
This is the first video I have watched o this engine. Did the block get line bored? If so this can be the rear seal leaking issue. Line boring moves the crank up in the block. This changes the way the rear seal fits around the crank. Line boring only moves the crank bearings, it doesnt move the seal mounting. This makes the seal tight at the top of the bearingand loose at the bottom.
Honestly in my Torino I’ve dealt with rear main seal issues it’s common I ran Lucas oil stabilizer for awhile then ran just oil and stopped turns out I was overfilling engine with to much oil which does cause leakage at real and plus your not really pulling any vacuum out of crank case with it on engine run stand
I feel like I didn't explain myself well enough in the intro. We 100% could have gotten the other carbs to idle but both had cracked fuel bowls and we discovered the 2nd carb had a blocked idle passage after tearing it apart.
I think fully disassemble and inspection is the new norm. no longer are the days of just bolt it on and go
It’s little speed bumps like this that make a reliable piece in the end. Sucks for now but it will be worth it in the end. Hang in there guys
BEAUTIFUL paint job on that Firebird!!! AWESOME!!
That big block Mopar sounds STOUT!!!!
I’ve heard a lot of those mopars leak from the rear seal. Watch nicks garage. He change the rear seal 8 times before he got it to seal up
Which seal ended up fixing that 383 in the end? I missed it. Did the rope seal do the trick?
Rope seal!
@@darryl3767 Cool! I saw the video where he had a few options and that was one of them. Great project, while you have the oil pan off, consider adding a windage tray . Keep up the good work!

Sounds wicked!! Bummer about that seal. I hate rear main leaks but at least the engine is not in the car!! Let's gooooooo 🍻🤙
Hey you two, I'd look at it this way: 1% of that big block failed, 99% of that big block is a success...I'd say that makes it a pretty dang-good build!!!
Put the factory set up back in engine. Out of the 100 plus 440 I have built only had one leak ever.
Check out Nick's Garage on RUclips. He had a big block Mopar that came in with a bad rear main leak. He went through several seals until he found the style that worked.
That is a nice piece! Wow!!
Thank you FST!
Sorry about that guys. It happens.

So sorry about the rear Main going out. Another tear down. Thanks for sharing!
💯👍👊
That 512 engine sounds good.
The Pontiac motor looks beautiful.
Ponch 400, I put that same engine in my '78 Special Edition T/A. Besides my '69 RR, that T/A is the best car I ever owned. We all make mistakes, you will get the leak fixed. 512 sounds bad-ass btw.
Make sure when u fire up the pontiac 400 to immediately go to 2,500 rpm for 20 minutes to break in that cam , it’s critical!!!!!
Yo, better now than later. It happens to everyone. Sounds knarly......love it. And I'm a Ford FE guy.
Ole 512 sounds really good!! Definitely agree that you guys need a dedicated exhaust for the run stand to hear the engine better.
The engine looks mean! =)
Dulcich has some good info on RB rear mains , I always use permatex brush on aviation sealer on the back side of seal on bock side and cap side, so does Steve .
I've been a subscriber for a while and love the content.
Engine sounded great
Darn it man! Sounded too cool. That engine stand has pretty much paid for itself. Now Chin Up! Not the end of the world. You guys will get it straightened out.
Yes brother man like he said, you guys will figure it out. Just get back on that horse every time it bucks you off
That's what my mama said Karma and that horse bucked me off 5 times in a row one year
The engine sounds awesome

Damn, that Mope sounds awesome! I've had several 60's and 70's Mopar engines, and none of them leaked until i touched it. 😅
Thanks This The Great Video & Channel & Car Cruising / Event !

Easy fix dont beat yourself up you did it right with the stand sounds great
WOW - BOY HOWDY DOES THAT THANG SOUND GOOD !
Sorry to hear about the oil leak but that stuff happens and you'll figure it out thanks for the video and again congratulations !
That engine sounds solid. That car is going to be wicked!
Great video, at least you guys didn’t install it and then find out about the leak, remember the glass is half full. Always.
Danny!! You are the best! Supporting that Pontiac
Appreciate seeing the journey
Nice build keep up the good videos
The 66-70 Pontiac in light metallic blue and factory chrome is the most beautiful engine ever ! Glad the Mopar is just a leak !
That really sucks with the oil leak but it sounds really good
I love that motorsound😊
That aluminum radiator on the engine room wall would look real nice on your engine test stand. That garden hose rig won't cool the motor properly. You'll get hot spots from air pockets in the block and heads using that system. The water pump needs to be turning also.
Woooowww!!! I can’t wait to see you drive
So sorry about the leak! I hope it's not a total disassembly. Sounds amazing though!
Sounds awesome. At least that will give you the opportunity to reinstall the engine correctly on the engine run stand😊
That thing sounds good!
GSS, boy was it a great idea to engine-stand test that big block! I had almost completely installed a "Rebuilt" engine when it started to leak oil! It was a cracked block from a pro-shop! Your videos are getting better and better!! It's just like a TV show!! (pretty close anyhow)
if you can get refrigeration systems up and running as designed i am sure you can handle the details on this engine.
O wow, so now I know where Westcoast engine ended up at. They did some rebuilds, but too far now for me. Bummer cause I have a Pontiac 421 HO needing rebuild.

Welp, the two times he revved this one it sounded Gnarly! Immediate throttle response!! Good luck sealin her up ya'll. 😎👍
Yes, that's a good sign for sure.
Cheer up, 100 percent it happened now, then once installed or ran for a bit
I love pontiacs.
Olivia… you’ll get your beautiful Pontiac. When you trust it it’s a good car!! It will BE !
Can't wait to fire my big block.make sure you trim the side seals o flat and seal with plenty of sealant.that works everytime for me.good luck
Like other people said, lucky it wasn't in the car & find out about it now, than down the road. Hope you can fix w/o too much hassle.
Sometimes you have to put sealer on the flywheel bolts, some are drilled to go into the crankcase and will leak oil if not sealed on the bolts.
Perfect ❤ it will fix try some black widow mufflers and happy girls month liv
You caught a bad break, put you will pull through.
It leaks because the engine is painted the wrong color, but it sounds good
😂😂
The engine sounds good.
❤
When you started it with the first carb sounded like it had a major vacuum leak. Maybe the port on the back of the carb.
Saw some RUclips video about rear seal, CNC type needed a special seal ring
Bummer, I have 2 of those seals on the shelf, I was gonna use one on my 528 Hemi...I wasn't planning on using RTV on the seal...I haven't read the instructions yet...I wouldn't do it this way...but if that is what the instructions say.
Those big block mopars are a beast !!:))) thats why you need to prep and break it in ??😮😊
😊 better than previous video
the air holes in the throttle plates are to speed the idle up
You should be able to spin new gasket on. Did u use grease or vaseline on seal contact surface. So it doesn't start dry and burn up the rubber. Does this aftermarket seal go on, only one way direction. Oil seemed to come out after engine was up to temperature
check MOPAR JOE 413 build. Same main seal
I like your cars those classic cars it's me Jesse okay
Holley 1050 Dominator adjusts, 750 or 1050 cfm.Mancini racing sells a 1 piece rear main seal if that is whats leaking. go to mopar place.
5:32 "It'll be fun" 😆
Engine breathers??
You two will figure it out, don't let this hiccup discourage you ❤
That’s a minor problem be thankful it’s not in the car ! When you run the valves the engine has to be at operating temperature.
If it is a main i found a cheap seal makes no difference it's always something else 🤔
Check manifold vacuum if low add a vacuum pump
Do you even have a crank case vent on your motor because if you don’t that will push seals out.
99% A vacuum crankcase ventilation system will stop the leak. New rings have blowby. You could modify the oil return passage through the rear Maine cap. I don't think it is the seal itself nice try just a little more trickery it will be fine.
Wow that is a bad leak. 🤷🏽♂️ may not be the seal ? Yeah good thing it was on the stand 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎
👍👍👍
Sounds good tho
car chemistry makes tiny header muffler might turn them to the side. electric water pump for run stand
I thought you were going to swap out that LS for the '400? Did you prank us?🤣
Did you linebore the mains? When you do, the main cap groove for the seal are not in centre anymore. That can cause a world of hurt with too tight in the block and too loose in the cap. Aka the deapth of the groove compared to the seal.
Thank you for each of your interesting and informative video. You guys make my day when I watch every video you make. Keep them coming. 👍😀🇺🇸🩵❗️
Trying to reach you about a new car show. What’s the best way to reach you guys?
This is the first video I have watched o this engine. Did the block get line bored? If so this can be the rear seal leaking issue. Line boring moves the crank up in the block. This changes the way the rear seal fits around the crank. Line boring only moves the crank bearings, it doesnt move the seal mounting. Did you line bore that engine
C00l❤😊
Did you guys use the 440 source blllit seal cap? Cause I had the same problem with my 512 stroker
Hello, I have a question whether the black upper part of the new carburetor is plastic or another material?.
That rear main seal isnt that bad. I did mine while it was in the car...and I corrected the leak
Did the block get line honed?
The story of my life… leaking rear main seals 🤬 lol
Bummer, but at least its on the stand and not in the car!
Damn that sucks I know what’s wrong with it leaking like that though .
Go watch nicks garage he goes into leaking rear mains on those mopars
If everything went perfect I'd be worried, the rear main seal leak is a good thing!

Hey you two will fix the Mopar engine! Shit Happens!
