Because its normal horse behavior. Its not funny. Its just a horse being a horse. Some horses are mouthy. They like to feel stuff with their mouth. They use the mouth like we use our hands. And they like to groom - mutual grooming. I groom you + you groom me: first with the lips + later the teeth. If you allow the mouthing with the lips than the horse will think its ok later to use the teeth. But to the horse that is not a "bite". Its grooming.
Horses also will grab items + swing it around to play - like with that purse. That is a horse in a good mood wanting to play. He does not know that is a purse. Plus equestrians have a grooming kit that comes in a purse like shape. It contains brushes + curry combs + hoof picks. Often horses will pick up the grooming kit + swing it around. Maybe he mistook that purse for his grooming kit.
And if its a bite, its fast + hard. And most likely will leave a bruise. But yes they can nip. But then the ears are pushed back.
But this horse is very relaxed in a good mood. The majority of these people were nervous around a horse.
I am quite ok with a horse rubbing its head on me. 😊 been working with them since 2019...

The sign says the horses “may” kick or bite and, given the necessary permission, some obviously think it would be rude not to. Taking a nibble out of some tourists who think that sign is there just to decorate the wall is one way to pass the time.
I always amazes me how many parents shove their kids nearest to the horses mouth for that spectacular holiday snap while they stay further away. Or the ones who let their very squishy kids get within stomping distance of those iron shod hooves attached to a huge, very heavy horse.
I also think some of the guards use their helmet’s chin strap to cover their mouths to hide a sneaky grin at what their horse can get away with which they can’t. Although I feel that their unsheathed swords could, at times, be put to a more practical use than just resting on their shoulder.
I wonder how many tourists go home with a horse bite mark along with the other souvenirs of their trip to our Capitol.

Poor horse! Talk him back to his stall and check him over and let him rest the rest of the day.

Looks like they need to put rubber mating down for the horses to stand on non slipping that way

I have often seen the guard’s horses slip on the cobblestones in the sentry boxes. Perhaps some non slip tungsten pimples in the heels of their shoes? I have always found them very effective on that sort of surface.

Why don’t they clean the horses area some before shift change.. for the safety of guards, visitors, horses…so they do not slip?

Don’t touch the horse! It’s working! Would you pet a service dog? No! Why? Because it’s working and can’t be distracted. The horse is the same thing! Leave it alone! It’s not a freakin’ petting zoo.

Don't put your children alone under or close the big Military Horse. The horse is not fine. The guard is worry about its condition.
