I would definitely make it a point to see your band perform if you ever come to the States.... When you come it would be amazing if you were ever to make it to Texas! much appreciation for everything!!
Sped, mate, I've got a special secret way of playing this one, for when you're the only guitarist in the band and you've got to fill the room: tune your A string down to G. Now you can bar the C chord at the fifth fret and reach all the tasty notes to make it swing. Also gives you access to the high notes for those signature 'deet deedee' moments. Sure, now you've got to move the main riff, but it's well worth a try x
very interesting lesson. I liked your suggestion about slopping in other notes on the 10th fret, as well as the open string for double tracking. Those are great and I can never be reminded too much about them as useful tools for the toolbox I think you're missing one thing. What i am hearing are the first three notes (the low C) are not swung, but played straight. At least with the guitar panned left (the one panned right has a lot of variations). This gives it that Chuck berry feel over and over and over again, which I find very very cool

From the opening drum part being the wrong tempo or not enough swing in it to the solos in between...and forget the end...that outro is so out of this world I've never heard it played like it was recorded with Jack Douglas. Even by Aerosmith. Thats an incredible recording. But I've listened to this song countless times and im convinced, and ill die on this hill, that the second go round for the verses the accents are different on that recording making it nigh impossible to replicate. Which isn't that far fetched considering live recording in studios back in the day and Douglas cutting tape. Even isolated i hear a difference. Man i love Aerosmith. What an amazing body of work!

Great tutorial! Thanks! The easiest way for me is the one on the A string starting at the C using the open G. However I think J Perry played it at the 8th fret like you did..
@@SpedSpedding These types of tutorials remind me how much fun rhythm guitar can be also.. I tend to focus too much either on leads or riffs..Few people appreciate SRV 's rhythmic playing also..
The 1st way the correct one, and I assume the extra bite is coming from Perry doing a Page and rolling off all the bass on his amp. Edit: just seen Tim Pearce say that Whitford was playing an LP, and Perry was playing a Strat. Panned left and right.
I saw a video of him, playing it, the main riff, he doesn’t go open, a first fret, first finger second fret, second finger, when he drops the first finger on the first fret, he slides it up to the second fret, for the next note
Man, so I find that when you teach you stay so true to the sound. JP, Slash Perry..you really nail it. I enjoy these so much many times I listen while working without even watching. However when it comes to learning a Zeppelin solo, THIS IS THE MOST ACCURATE place to learn. Well done. PS do you guys live in the Shire surrounded by rolling green hills and little ponds? Cheers from California
I used to be able to play the intro riff really well. This was 20-25 years ago. Nowadays, after a wrist injury on my fret hand, carpal and overall neglect of a regular practice routine, I feel like a beginner when I try to play this song. Probably sound like one too. The verse riff always gave me a hard time. Never saw the 3rd variation, I'll have to try that one!
Sorry to hear that you’ve had a rough time with your hands. Literally my worst nightmare. I hope you manage to get some success out of this riff and enjoy playing that third variation making use of the open string.
Kind Sir , I am new to electric I've been playing acoustic for 45 years. I would love if you could spend a couple minutes showing amp settings on your tutorial. Tone chasing kills my motivation. I feel Id be better off just practicing the wooden Goblin. Thanks for the great content
It would totally depend on the gear that you have and the gear that I have. Historically on this channel I’ve either used a plug-in or my fractal. And usually any time that you can see me using an amp going through my twonotes torpedo studio you’ve probably been able to see the settings, et cetera. I do have a tone video in the works though. Keep your ears peeled.
This is great. I’ve always struggled with this riff because of the stretch and my disobedient pinky. Did I think of transposing it to another part of the fretboard? No. No i didn’t. Too busy watering the garden.
Least the pansies are thriving! 😂 I’ve got you covered then, and like I said the second variation is actually easier as there’s no stretch and it sounds better!
Sounds good my friend. I think the first way sounded right although every band I was in that played that song guitarist always played 3rd position. Trying to remember how Perry & Whitford played it live I think a combination between the two of them. Love your use of the word piss in the UK. If I were sitting out in the garden I'd be drinking a cola slurpee don't know if you have them over there. Anyway best to you & Gab as always!!
Oh really, I would've thought the 3rd/4th variation I touched on would have been the least common, but sounds like your band heard the bite too! Haven't had a slurpee in yeaaaars but a used to get a bubblegum one every time I went to the cinema way back when! Haha.
I’m gonna try the variation 2, the first variation is tiny bit problematic for me when I am playing on stage, standing up. I find myself raising my guitar just for this tune and then lowering back, may be I can avoid that with variation 2. Thanks for the lesson! A lesson the “Crazy” solo would be nice if you can do it!
I hear you on the stretch. Anyone who slings the guitar a little lower will probably prefer that one as well. Hopefully this gives you a funky work around and like I said, tonally I prefer it anyway.
Never mind the cool riffs, tell us more about how we're screwing up our big break. I was going to do some gardening, but I'm not taking any chances now
Hey Sped you need to check out the outro solo at the end of Amazing. Like the title of the song it's amazing guitar solo. Maybe you can teach us that next?
Great vid man. 3 years into pakying guitar (age 46) and just cant get my pinky to play ball when I've tried to learn this tune. Do you have a tab sheet you could share?
Love your channel. This may sound off-topic, but, does that Les Paul have an ebony fretboard? Just curious. My two favorite fretboard woods in order are maple and ebony. Again, just curious
Haha, I haven't the slightest intention of trying any of this! Too hard for me, at my stage, and anyway, I like watering pansies! Not really, but adding Perry Peri 🌶 and the Purple Pansies to the future group name list. Love the deadpan throwaway lines 🤣. God knows what your US audience makes of them 🤣🤣 Rock on!🙌😮
Build your way up to it and come back whenever you feel ready! And in response to the throw away lines, haha yeah, me and Gab sometimes watch my videos back before posting to check them and I often say "people must think I'm either Schizophrenic or Mad. Probably both. 😂 I'm not, they are jokes.
I think Spud Pudding is the best YT guitar teacher out there. Just kidding about the spud pudding bit. Lol If only you lived in Melbourne i d take lessons of you for sure.
The other way is the lazy way - how I imagine Billy Gibbons would’ve written it if he had to sing as well, which is to fret an open C cowboy chord and use all the open strings. So your octave, for example, would be c at the third fret a string, and 1st fret b string. It gives you that bite that you mentioned. The palm muting is essential but a bit trickier, because you’re covering more strings, but I always thought they could done it for one of the double tracks on the original track.
Yeah that’s also cool! I didn’t use the B string C because it just felt too think with my amp settings. Not to say it isn’t on the track though. Walk This Way Gibbons edition would be cool. 😏
My little finger is the black sheep of my hand family. It is difficult to get it to do what it is told. It is good at fitting in your ear however, a real wax weavel.

LOL!!!! "I'm like your grand dad, but a little bit better on guitar" Hilarious! Thanx for the lesson and sharing your knowledge, outstanding work!
Hahaha, got you with that one! 👴🏻
Great work dude. Love the vids.
Thanks so much, glad you like my stuff.
@@SpedSpedding Thank you!
But did he? 😊 If there could only be one channel for breaking down solos and riffs it is this one.
Glad you’ve put your trust in me. I’m singing Linkin Park now. 😂
Keep it going Sped.
Will do!
Where's Brad Whitford?
I mean, wheeere's Braaad?
Edit: I love the new ending! Make that your trademark.
Jordan rocks🤘
Tidy room, tidy licks.
Great stuff❤
Thank you!
Haha.
Yes please sped .🎉🎉
🔥
I’m gonna try the variation 2, the first variation is tiny bit problematic for me when I am playing on stage, standing up. I find myself raising my guitar just for this tune and then lowering back, may be I can avoid that with variation 2.
Thanks for the lesson! A lesson the “Crazy” solo would be nice if you can do it!
I hear you on the stretch. Anyone who slings the guitar a little lower will probably prefer that one as well. Hopefully this gives you a funky work around and like I said, tonally I prefer it anyway.
What a fantastic video have a wonderful weekend ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! You too!
Sped, please please do a short video on Slash’s second solo in Used To Love Her. I can’t find a good lesson on RUclips. 🙏
Never mind the cool riffs, tell us more about how we're screwing up our big break. I was going to do some gardening, but I'm not taking any chances now
I did some gardening, just 20 minutes yesterday and I forgot all of the modal shapes. I mean, look what happened to Kate Bush.
please do a complete lesson. thanks
Hey Sped you need to check out the outro solo at the end of Amazing. Like the title of the song it's amazing guitar solo. Maybe you can teach us that next?
I will have a listen, thanks!
Great vid man. 3 years into pakying guitar (age 46) and just cant get my pinky to play ball when I've tried to learn this tune. Do you have a tab sheet you could share?
Spedly, you need to see a JP with a ring for the Gab finger
Have you considered covering Led Zeppelin "Going to San Francisco" part during live Dazed and confused at msg?
Magic! The Ole 3 4 1 trick😉,
( back to the watering.)actually)Sod the garden ,gonna grind me axe!😂2
Haha brilliant!

Love your channel. This may sound off-topic, but, does that Les Paul have an ebony fretboard? Just curious. My two favorite fretboard woods in order are maple and ebony.
Again, just curious
Sped. You’re as funny as you are deft at the guitar. Great work,m’man ❤
Haha thanks Jay! Appreciate you.
Sounds great! What amp are you running your LP through?
Too much Comedy on these tutorials, Sped!! Really good lesson on this Joe Perry style!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😂
YES!!
🙌🏻 YES!!
I am drinking a variation of that right now. A Canadian Rye and Luxardo Amaretto. It's called a Godfather FYI.
Yes it is indeed! I call it the same thing. Beautiful.
I think Spud Pudding is the best YT guitar teacher out there. Just kidding about the spud pudding bit. Lol
If only you lived in Melbourne i d take lessons of you for sure.
Ironically had a massive jacket Spud last night for the first time in ages. 😂😂😂😂 I teach online btw, take a look at my website.
@@SpedSpedding thanks good to know!
Dammit. You got it Brother!
You're a funny f#'ck too!
Very good!
I play it #3 in the open position. Seems to "bounce" better.
Sped, if you were were playing this song on stage, which version would you play, 1st, 2nd or 3rd you taught us?
I’d definitely play the second one!
Thanks 👍🇺🇸
You bet
What pickups you got in that thing man? Sounds awesome
I have a video installing them called 59 PAF. They’re from my friend Tom at The Buzztone. 🇺🇸
first solo!
how about Combination?
I am thinking Maybe Variation 2 & 3 together is the magic.
My little finger is the black sheep of my hand family. It is difficult to get it to do what it is told. It is good at fitting in your ear however, a real wax weavel.
At least yours has a multipurpose. Most peoples pinky just support their phones nowadays whilst scrolling.
Dunno about anyone else but I play it in the C major cowboy chord shape right down the bottom of the neck.
I’ve never tried it that way. Four string skip? Skills.
Nah. It’s the easiest way mate. No stretching.
