    My first Real Shortwave Receiver... it is a fantastic & still today out performs many modern shortwave radios. Mine has the 10m FM upgrade with squelch fitted to the tone control & activated via the dimmer switch.. also I have fitted BHI DSP & under the mysterious black cover I have fitted 12V DC in 👍 great video thanks again.. I will never sell mine 💕

    Thank you for your very informative video. I have inherited one of these receivers from my uncle, It must be a fairly early model as it has a 5 digit serial number. The mystery black cover plate on the back is missing on mine and has a socket for 13.8v 0.8A input power that seems to be factory fitted with screen printed labelling on the case.

    John - I had one for a short time, myself. I bought it locally on CraigsList, then sold it a few weeks later at a local Hamfest. I probably bought it for $50 and sold it for $150. This was about 10 years ago. I needed the money. I did not realize that they were still holding their value so well. I have a Kenwood R-2000 now that I'm pretty happy with. However on the Sherwood Engineering web page, the R-1000 is rated much better than the R-2000 at close dynamic range. Maybe I should have kept it.😒 BTW, most of my other receivers are tube type, as well.

    That mystery black panel is a slot for a DC 13.8V, 0.8V power input, which could be added as an option.

    I've just just purchased one from eBay and I paid $400 Australian for it. And I just won an eBay auction for a yaesu Frg-7000 which comes with the original manual for $380 Australian and both are in very good working condition

    My Kenwood R-1000 has a DC power socket marked 13.8 VDC where your mystery black panel is.

    Thank you for the info! 1) Would it be possible to change the RF attenuation choices from 20,40,60 to something smaller (for example: 5,10,15) by altering the internal electronics associated with that switch? 2) How does the RF-1000 compare to the later RF-2000? 3) Why did you do a video on it when you usually prefer tube radios? 4) What frequencies does it cover? Etc.

    I just changed the lights in mine. What a pain. I put LED's in it so I don't have to do that again. Tune it back up and back in business. Great little radio for it's age N0PXJ

    The black panel is for a 12v Jack. I know because my R600 has the same black panel. They use to sell the 12v jack for R1000s and R600s that fit perfectly in the hole. There are two pins on the power board for the wire from jack to make the 12v connection. The R1000 and R600 are identical with the exception of a couple of buttons which really do nothing for the reception. Both receivers are great for the professional as well as the beginner. I recommend both highly if you find one in good condition.

      My understanding is a bit different. They used that back plate from the 600. The 1000 never did offer 12v jack after reading the manual and looking at the list of available accessories (in the manual.) So they covered it up. Easier than redesigining the back. To say the 600 and 1000 are identical is a rookie comment. The 1000 is vastly different and better but your mileage will vary.

    • @squarewave2
      @squarewave2  3 года назад +1

      My antenna is just a 75 foot long wire antenna about 20 feet above ground. Nothing special.

    I know this is a long time after the initial post but hope anyone seeing this can help. I dabbled a few years back with shortwave using some very basic sets which were disappointing to say the least. However, my late father passed on to me the R-1000, which he thought to be quite good and at the time I also agreed was a good set. The only problem I have is now that after many years of storage the mode switches are really jammed, apparently it's a common problem with some of these sets. I've tried WD-40, GT85 etc but think it's a mechanical problem requiring a new set of switches. Does anyone know of a part substitute or other fix as I'd love to use his old set again.

    I'll never let mine go. With that wide AM filter, no receiver I've ever heard sounds better Than the R-1000 on the broadcast stations.

    I picked one up last week for $150 in very nice shape. What antenna do you suggest? Can I make a "random wire antenna"? Mine is serial # 2030701 is there a way to figure out the year it was made? Thanks for the video!

    • @squarewave2
      @squarewave2  4 месяца назад +1

      random wire antenna is fine. It should be at least 75 feet long and mounted as high as possible using proper insulators at each end. I don't know how to find the year of manufacture.

    I have received from my grandfather, what looks to be a Kenwood model R 1000 Communications receiver like the one you reviewed. I am assuming this is at least 30 years old with the original manual the warranty replacement parts, etc. it is in mint condition. I am seeking to find the value. Can you assist me in this effort

      Hi Kelley,
      Do a search on Ebay for your Kenwood R-1000. Prices range from $200 to $400.
      A mint condition Kenwood could be $400!

    Mine has the 12v input on the back of mine. My NB button does not seem to work. Any ideas what I should do?

    • @squarewave2
      @squarewave2  4 месяца назад

      The NB (noise blanker) button only works to quiet localized ELECTRICAL interference. This interference is rarely a problem. Don't confuse electrical interference with the normal noise present in short wave. My NB button, too, appears to do nothing.
