  • Thanks to comments and emails from viewers on my channel I was able to figure out how to use the SSB modes on my Kenwood R1000.
    This receiver has a couple of quirks and if you are not aware of those, USB and LSB signals just sound warbled and unintelligible. Thankfully, I now know those quirks and I can report that both USB and LSB actually work very well on the Kenwood R1000!
    I picked up my R1000 second-hand earlier this year and use it with the MLA30+ loop antenna. Have had some great catches on this one.
    00:00 Three tricks for SSB listening on R1000
    02:52 Bangkok Volmet 6676 kHz USB as example
    03:10 A very steady hand does it
    03:46 More fine tuning

    Yup. Works fine. 👍. Now remember ham radio is way most often in LSB below 10MHz and USB above. Commercial stations like the one you just received are always in USB.
    When you switch from LSB to USB or the other way around you will notice that the direction you need to adjust the dial to f.ex. get the pitch higher has switched. Happy listening.

    Andre good to see that you able to make the R1000 even more useful. The closest radio I have this is my Japan Radio JRC-535D, but the offset on that radio is automatic, and the dial has a flywheel which helps fine tuning. However, when I bought it new it costs about twice the price of the Kenwood R1000, so I am impressed that yours sounds better than mine using the internal speaker. I found using an external speaker was the only way to make it shine on music.
    73! Happy Holidays, and have a great day🎉🎉🎉!

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  6 месяцев назад +1

      The JCR sounds like it might be quite a bit more comfortable to fine tune, sounds like a great set. To think, all the time the Kenwood was capable of fine tuning, I just moved the dial way too fast. A really steady and very slow hand is needed. But it works 😀 Enjoy your holidays!

      @@swlistening Andre as long as you can fine tune, then you have a winner. The smooth dial on my JRC makes it a pleasure to operate but the radio that you have is much more important than one you don’t have. .

      Thank you for this! I checked the frequency (I am in Germany right now), I picked up what I believe is Channel 292 from Rohrbach in Germany, just north of Munich. This is an interesting frequency, this Channel 292 broadcasts a variety of different stations, I think the one I am listening to now (21:50 UTC) is Echo Helsinki, seems to be in Ukrainian. They have a very interesting website, channel292.de, where you can find all the programme listings.

    I believe below 10 MHz should be set on Lower Side Band for ham frequencies. The radio could be recapped or realigned to correct the one KHz issue. Have a nice Christmas.

    Eureka! The SWL King has finally gotten his R-1000 to receive VOLMET signals! ☺️📻👑👍🏼
    You've probably noticed that the S-meter not registering a strong reading. I think that's normal since SSB transmissions don't have a carrier signal. None of my SSB capable radios indicate a significant signal strength or S/N values either. 🗼⚡

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  6 месяцев назад

      Took me a good while! But I'm very happy that I finally figured it out. Much credit must go to you for your advice and that link you shared with me. Thanks for that! Interesting that you mention the S-metre, because I did notice that, even though the Bangkok signal is quite strong. I guess it makes sense, now that you point out that there is no carrier signal.

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@swlistening Absolutely. When your R-1000 is on SSB mode, you can see that the S-meter needle fluctuates with the speech, which constitutes the sideband information. With AM signals the needle will remain constant (barring selective fading) between speech or music pauses since the carrier is always present. 🙂
      Your R-1000 has a external speaker out jack. I didn't tell you this, but last month I got myself a Diamond TS-750 external speaker for my Malahit SDR clone. It's very cheap, around US$6 including shipping. It's a got a "Noise Filter" switch and an -8dB attenuation switch. I don't know how the noise filter works since this speaker isn't powered and I think it uses a simple low-pass capacitor circuit to reduce the high frequency background static.
      The TS-750, being a passive speaker isn't suitable for low output headphone sockets like the D-808 as the volume is so low. The only reason it only works well with the Malahit is because it (the SDR) has an adjustable headphone output amplifier. If you need to amplify the headphone out audio from say, your PL-368 you'll need a powered (active) speaker with an built-in amplifier.
      The TS-750 is designed for communications/ham radio transceivers as they always have an external speaker out socket. I was thinking that you might be able to improve the sound quality from the R-1000 by using an external speaker. Kenwood did sell an external speaker back in the days - I believe it was called the SP-100 speaker. 🙂

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@StratmanII Thank you for this, I actually think an external speaker is a very good idea in some cases. I use the Tecsun ICR-110 sometimes as external speaker, but a good-quality one like you suggest is definitely worth looking into. I have seen quite a few videos of DXers who do that. But first on my list of purchases for 2024 is another radio, I am looking at a few options right now.

The radio and electronics stores and hypermarkets I have been to so far are not that different to what we have in South Africa. The stock, in comparison to what I can find in South Africa anyway, is basically the same. Lots of nice speakers, smart speakers, digital radios, but no SW radios, and no speciality MW radios like the Sangean. I will keep looking...

      I think this might be Chinese jamming of Radio Free Asia, I pick that up sometimes on 9300 kHz. But I'm just guessing, I don't know exactly what you heard. So it could be the Great Firedrake or CNR1, which are both used often to jam Radio Free Asia.
