Welcome to my channel. This is André, the man from South Africa.
My channel is about all things radio, especially shortwave and medium wave radio listening. On my channel I post reviews of receivers and recordings of interesting SW and MW signals. I also do comparisons, to give you an idea of what different radios can do before you make a purchase. My channel also contains radio news and news about radio stations and radio history.
Why you can trust my reviews: I DO NOT earn money from ANY of the links posted on my page, and I never will. I prefer to remain objective and not be influenced in any way in my reviews. I don't think you can be fully objective if you earn money from links to retailers selling the very same radios you review. I simply provide the links as a service to help you find a seller.

Special shortwave Christmas broadcast from Germany: All six frequencies of Gruss an Bord
This is my recording of the Gruss an Bord transmissions on Christmas eve, to mariners. It is a very special broadcast by Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) to German mariners who are at sea and cannot spend Christmas with their families. It happens once a year only, on Christmas eve.
There were six frequencies to six different regions of the world’s oceans. I heard five of the six frequencies here in South Africa.
This is a long recording, I recorded quite a long piece of the transmission because it is so special. So for those of you who understand German and want to listen to an extended part of the broadcast, you can! You can also hear the end of the transmission, the ringing of church bells.

Tecsun PL-680 vs Sony ICF-7600GR: KCBS Pyongyang, Voice of Vietnam, Yemen Radio #shortwave #radio

This video is a comparison between the Tecsun PL-680 and the Sony ICF-7600GR on a number of shortwave signals, including KCBS Pyongyang with some rousing North Korean music, as well as Voice of Vietnam, NHK Japan and more. Most signals were surprisingly clear. These two radios are very similar, in my opinion, but the Sony seems to be less noisy than the Tecsun. I was lucky to find a Sony ICF-76...

2024 was an interesting time in the radio world, particularly the shortwave world! AWR threw us a curve ball when they ended many of their transmissions, but the bands are still alive and kicking! There were also surprisingly many new shortwave radio releases this year. Just shows that the manufacturers still have confidence in shortwave radio. I tested many new radios in 2024: the Qodosen SR-2...
Tecsun PL-680 vs Sony ICF-7600GR: Bangkok Meteorological Radio and Hong Kong Volmet #shortwave

This is a short comparison of the Tecsun PL-680 and the Sony ICF-7600GR on two SSB signals. It is Bangkok Meteorological Radio and Hong Kong Volmet. I think the Sony is less noisy and has the edge here. My location is Johannesburg, South Africa, so both these are quite distant signals. Hong Kong is 10700 km (6650 miles) from me, and Bangkok is 9000 km (5590 miles). I used an MLA30 loop as anten...
Always something new on shortwave! Radio Tehran in Arabic on 15095 kHz #radio

I found this new signal today on 15095 kHz (19 December 2024) while scanning the shortwave bands. I scan the 19 metre band very often and this was the first time I heard this signal. It is not listed anywhere, not even in the World Radio and TV Handbook. After posting this video, various viewers commented that this is Radio Tehran, in Arabic. Also confirmed by Mauno Ritola, editor of the WRTH, ...

The Raddy RF886 is a great little pocket radio. You get a lot for the money (it is about $26 from Amazon). The radio has a torch, covers MW, SW, FM, WB and VHF frequencies, has Bluetooth, stereo FM sound on headphones, a sleep timer and alarm, 99 memories for each band and six equaliser settings. And it performs well! This video contains some random SW catches on the Raddy RF886, with the MLA30...
Tuning the wonderful Sony ICF-7600GR WITHOUT muting! #radio #shortwave

I uploaded a video of my newly acquired Sony ICF-7600GR a day or so ago. I love this radio. It is full analogue and very sensitive on shortwave, but I identified one flaw, it mutes while tuning. However, a viewer commented that there is a way to tune this radio without muting, for a real analogue tuning experience! The viewer showed me how to do it, and in this video I show you how I tune witho...

I found a Sony ICF-7600GR on Facebook last week and what a nice radio it has turned out to be. This radio was produced from 2001 to 2018. It cost $180 new, I paid $26 for my second-hand version. It has continuous coverage from 150 kHz to 29999 KHz, with tuning steps in 1 kHz and 5 kHz. It has 100 memories, a clock with timer and sleep functions, sync detection, SSB with a fine-tuning wheel, a d...

This is an afternoon scan in the 25 metre band on the Tecsun PL-368, with some amazingly clear catches several hours before sunset. I plugged in my MLA30 to the MW jack, and it worked perfectly, it really improved SW reception. This antenna trick works really well! There are many interesting stations here, like Radio NUG from Paochung in Taiwan on 11940 kHz, a very clear capture. Also very clea...

Eric. Can you please help me to find reference SW transmitters in Europe which transmit carriers only for calibration purposes? Similar to WWV (?) at 10.000 MHz in US. Thanks.
The links on the previous post are blocked by YT but they are correct and lead to the "ERcomER" website, the distributor of Tecsun products in Poland - the links should be copied and opened on another tab - from the descriptions provided there I don't know how to respond to the revelation in connection with the PL-660 model modified by the manufacturer. Moreover it seems to me, if I read it correctly, that for the distributor "ERcomER" the manufacturer also improved something in the PL-680.
I don't know if it has to do with the holiday season or something else, but YT is acting strangely, on one PC your post about the PL-660 with new software is immediately visible, but on the tablet it's not, and one have to tap twice in the sorting - the newest first. It's possible that the PL-660 isn't selling very well and the manufacturer is implementing to it the PL-680 software to lure buyers using a crypto-slogan; we now offer a cheaper PL-680 variant in a PL-660 housing. After all, these models did not originally differ only in housing and software. It's a strange thing and I wonder how the operator of this channel will react to it. If at all.
I picked up some of this in Yorkshire.
That's good to hear Caroline! I was wondering how your DXing was going in Yorkshire. Is it better than in London?
I am brand new using a short wave radio. just a few days ago I purchased a PL-680. but I can't figure out how to manually add a frequence, such as 34.90 for example. I don't know what to hit on the radio to put that in & how do you put a point (period) in the number. I know this sounds like a silly question, but like I said, I'm a newbie. I don't know who to ask for help.
Welcome to the wonderful world of shortwave radio listening! You are most welcome to ask your questions here. For shortwave frequencies you just punch in the entire frequency, after selecting the SW band. To select the SW band you press either the up or down arrows just below the AM and FM buttons. When you are in the shortwave band, punch in the full frequency, for example 15770. For AM listening do the same. Press the AM button to go to the AM band, then punch in the full frequency, for example 610. For FM you do not need to enter decimal points. So if you are in the FM band and you want to listen to 102.7, you punch in 1027. The radio will read the last number as the decimal point. So for 94.0, for example, you need to punch in 940.
how do I manually put in a frequency like 34.90, for example? I'm brand new at this.
nice video 73 an Merry Christmas from Germany!
Thank you and Frohe Weihnachten to you also!
Listening to those traditional German Christmas songs made me think this maritime radio service may have had its origins going back to WW1, when the Imperial German Navy ruled the world's oceans. 🙂 Anyway, I attempted to get C3PO to translate the male announcer around the 06:00 mark, until you switched the frequency about two minutes later. Note that the source sound quality which is played through my Android tablet and detected by smartphone has resulted in many things lost in translation: "Ladies and gentlemen, they also report on what life in the ports, life on board, working on board, again and again in the Info, of course we do North German reporting or business reporting, but this year we have really unpacked it again, André Feuerbacher, network editor of North Rhine-Westphalia and the head of programming at NDR, Coron, is ok with me" "We have also paid a little more attention here to the fact that we also tell exactly about it, about the hard work, the food-rich work, about the economic contexts that always have to do with seafaring, what did we do, well, we have heard the thought of Rosa, also to keep alive an awareness of the importance, the relevance of SEPA are economical, that also brings the ports are on the wheels on these first marriages just to keep these first marriages awake again(?)" "I miss it especially at Christmas, when you can simply preview quite interesting thought experiments to sit around the account decorations or Christmas stands or by things with which you are currently driving, what is being prepared. Gifts like sneakers, smartphone and I think it's quite interesting to ask you what is it really here if there were male sailors, containers, giants across the world's oceans, among other things, here, where we are currently broadcasting, to the port of Hamburg. "What of it would be here if it weren't for the people who would take care of the fruit, if the machines that were almost year-old are not here, the people are here, the containers on my head, the ships are waiting again, I have this beautiful place to sleep, no shipping nose of the year..." That was a verbatim translation by the app and if I ran it several times I'm sure I'd get a better translation each time. I think the translation would have been better had you used your Eton/Grundig Executive Traveler instead of the Qodosen. 😀
Thank you so much for the translation! I am pinning your comment so that viewers will see it first, it is really interesting to see what they are talking about. This is really nice, thanks! There are quite a number of words in Afrikaans that are similar to German words, so I am able to catch a few words here and there and understand a little bit, but not in full. You might know it already, but before WW1 Germany also had several African colonies. My neighbour to the north, Namibia, was a German colony. To this day there are some towns in Namibia where people still speak German, and the German colonial architecture has been maintained and is very popular among tourists. You can see one example here, the small coastal village of Luderitz in the south of Namibia. I have been there, it is a very interesting place, all these German-style buildings surrounded by desert! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BCderitz#/media/File:Lutheran_Church_Luderotz.jpg
@@swlistening I hope I didn't insult any German speaking viewer, as that translation was done in the wee hours of the morning and the app relies on the device's microphone input. 🤭 If the source audio was from an FM station I'm sure C3P0 would have translated the German announcer more accurately. Thank you for the link to the article about the town in Namibia. I enjoyed looking at the strange coastal landscape. I wish I could sail along the coast of the African continent to see how the beaches vary with the latitude. It seems that the east coast of Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia) has sandy beaches while the south western part appear to have a rocky coastline. What's fascinating to me is that South Africa sits mostly on the Highveld plateau which tapers all the way to Cape Town. I'm going to have a look at Namibia's topology on Google Earth in my spare time! 🌍🇳🇦
Laudetur Jesus Christus!
Merry Christmas Andre! Excellent recording off the little "Q" DX radio machine! 15770 KHZ WRMI usually comes in about the same in Tucson, Arizona too as we are back of the beam and propagation has been mediocre for the past 3 weeks here, so it's even worse. 73! Have a great day!
Merry Christmas to you too! Interesting about 15770 kHz at your location. How are the other WRMI frequencies there? They seem to have quite a number of frequencies in various directions. Are some of them very clear catches in Tucson? If I hear WRMI, it is 15770, but never very clearly. They have one targeted broadcast to West Africa on 17790 kHz, Radio Africa Network, which is quite clear here on some days, but not always.
@@swlistening Andre I receive 5050 Khz weakly but they broadcast the Legends of WRMI on there so I live with it. They used to switch to 9455KHZ but one of the hurricanes damaged the antenna or Xmitter. 5850 and 5950 KHZ are usually good except when occupied by old BS. 7730 and 7780 KHZ occasionally. plus 9395 KHZ in the Tucson area. 73!
You should record Radio Vatican, Brother Stair, WMLK and World's Last Chance.
Actually I should have, on Christmas day, to see what they do. Next year :-)
@@swlistening I heard WMLK last week and heard some music.
Hello André, Merry Christmas again 🎅😜 Well done receiving this broadcast on so many frequencies, even the Tashkent one did really well 😮 and I like the fact you had a very good signal on 11650, at least for most of the broadcast 😛 this really means shortwave can work & can be suitable for such broadcasts. I hope those responsible find a good replacement for Moosbrunn to Indian Ocean next year 👍
Hi there Arnie, thanks for the wishes and I hope you had a good Christmas! Mine was good, just some family and a few friends came over, a small gathering, but it was very nice. It will be interesting to see what they do next year with Gruss an Bord for the Indian Ocean, my guess is that they might use Woofferton. Always reliable here at my location. It is as you say, the clarity of 11650 shows that SW can work really well. The clear NHK signal from Yamata here at my location on an almost daily basis is another example of SW that works really well. By the way, I monitored NHK from Issoudun last night on 15130 kHz at 19:10 UTC. It was clear. Good and strong signal. Sinpo 45444. Not as crystal clear as the one from Yamata, but still very good.
That NHK is crystal clear. Jealous here in Eastern Canada.
This NHK signal is one that I can always rely on, most of the time it is as clear as in this video. It is amazingly strong at my location.
Thank you Andre for all you do for us in the hobby. Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas and prosperous new year from my family in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. 73. VA7VEB
Thank you Brian, and thank you for the kind comments about my channel. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family also! The Rocky Mountains must be beautiful at this time of the year, covered in snow?

Merry Christmas SWL i hope all is well. I was not aware of these broadcast. I did catch several Pirate Radio stations last nights. Hope all is well in South Africa .
Thank you Duane, and Merry Christmas to you also. All is well here, thanks 😀 I sometimes talk about events like these on my channel, in my podcasts. I think you might have missed the podcast where I spoke about this. But next year it will happened again! The pirates you caught sound interesting, where are you located?
@swlistening They are some where in the mid US or the eastern US because people in the east US are picking then up. People in the western states don't copy them .
@@duanetrivett750 It is fun to chase these pirate stations. I know there are some in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe also. I once caught one from Brazil, called Radio Araucaria. But that has been the only pirate station I have heard so far. There are none here in South Africa.

Merry Christmas Andrew!
I have a question, are listening the stations out of the target area, thanking you.
For most of the signals I was outside the target area. I am in South Africa, so the two signals to the Indian Ocean and to the Atlantic near South Africa were in my direction. All the others were not.
Merry Christmas!

Hello. December is just ending and apart from "SWL News there is no information about the discontinuation of the PL-660. There is also no information on the Anon_co website about the impact of the new chip on the functionality of the PL-680 - there's no info concerning PL-680 at all so I don't know what to do. I ask myself this question because I have been planning to buy one of the above models for a long time BUT I put it off until later and bought other models, finally I find out that radical changes have occurred in the matter of these two models, so I have a choice: • wait for the development of events Or, •• take advantage of the offer of the local exclusive distributor of Tecsun products, which presents the PL-660 modified by the manufacturer. The following description was posted; "(Note <in red colour> - We currently offer the latest production version of the PL-660 model, which already includes improvements introduced by the manufacturer earlier in the PL-680 model - both models now have the same specification as the PL-680 model and differ only in the housing design - applies only to the new version of the PL-660 from the "ERcomER" distribution (check the information on the official Tecsun brand product website)." On the page in the section of PL-680 one can read; "Compared to the earlier production version of the PL-660 model, the new PL-680 model (and the latest production version PL660) is characterized by even better sensitivity in the short wave range (noticeable for weaker signals) and more stable operation of the AGC gain control system, the system has been improved in terms of the previously occurring phenomenon of the so-called "soft muting". The synchronous detector system also works even more efficiently in the new model.". It is difficult to find out without testing how both new versions of these models actually function - the shop assistants have general knowledge and refer to the above descriptions - and I cannot afford to buy it for testing. www.ercomer.pl/pl/p/TECSUN-PL-680-Odbiornik-globalny-AMFMSSBCW/1253 www.ercomer.pl/pl/p/TECSUN-PL-660-Odbiornik-globalny-AMFMSSBCW/101 In connection with the above, I kindly ask for an update of the information regarding the PL-680 and advice on whether buying the new PL-660 variant makes sense. After all, the two models previously did not differ only in the software itself. Thank you in advance for your reply. Merry Christmas to y'all. 🖖
It seems that YT blocks the connection from these given links. After selecting the link, the screen goes black and "about:blank#blocked" is the only information. Copying the links individually and opening it in another tab makes sense - on the "ERcomER" website there is indeed information (via Google Translate) about the modified PL-660 and the "refreshed" PL-680 as it stated in the original post. It's really interesting how these changes affect the reception, whether is at all better than it's in older receivers. BTW December ends in 5 days, so are there any farther good news concerning PL-680, will it remains PLL ?
Hi André, to be honest... I can't make out any difference between the two radios in your test! 😵 And I'm blown away by your reception quality of NHK on 11815! 😍 Also, that crackling on 11680 KCBS... Makes the broadcast sound more vintage than it is 😂 Speaking of NHK, I wonder what 15130 from Issoudun @ 19-21 UTC looks like in your location? France is fully in darkness at the time of the broadcast, and it's really deep in darkness at this time of the year. So I wonder if this broadcast can actually make it to its intended target area of Africa? 🧐 Here, DXing has suddenly become a lot more difficult, and for long hours 😞 my direct neighbour put some blinking Christmas lights both in front of AND at the back of their home, and I can actually see both lights from my room's window 😆 the front one pulsates slowly, but it's so strong, it even illuminates nearby powerlines 🤣 while the other is an animated one, with varying speeds & types of flashing -- these seem to be the worst, from my experience. And now, on all bands, I have blobs of noise every 50kHz or so -- in addition to increased noise floor! And I'm not even aiming my small-ish terminated loop at them 😂 Merry Christmas & stay healthy 🎅
Hi there Arnie, Merry Christmas to you also! To my ears the only difference between the Sony and the PL-680 is that the Sony seems to be slightly less noisy, which seems to be one of the main advantages of the Sony over the PL-680. But the difference in this video is not huge, as most of the signals are very good quality. I am always surprised by the quality of NHK signals here in South Africa. I hear the Yamata signal as clearly as in this video almost on a daily basis. I also hear the Issoudun signal well, but it is never as clear as Yamata. I will check Issoudun tonight at 19:00, I am sure I have heard it often, but I will just make sure tonight and let you know here. Good luck with your Christmas lights problem! 🤣 I guess your neighbour might remove the lights after new year, so a few more days of noise to live with...
Best wishes for the festive period Andre & to all radio fans.
Thank you Lew, and best wishes to you also!
Did you have to do anything special when using the MLA-30 with the Sony 7600GR? I ask because the Sony provides a voltage on the external antenna jack to power the optional Sony AN-LP1 portable loop antenna.
Hi there Joseph. No, I did not do anything special. I know about the antenna jack that provides some voltage to power a Sony antenna. I searched for information online and found various forum posts and articles. The consensus seems to be that you can use other external antennas as well. Here is one article with some comments: swling.com/blog/2017/04/using-the-sony-icf-sw7600gr-with-external-antennas/
@@swlistening thanks for the info and article.
Truly an amazing catch. Congratulations André. That is one amazing radio ! 👍🏼😃
Thanks Robert! I think it was the Qodosen, and the quiet rural location that helped me catch this one, finally 😃
Hello there, in all these videos I wonder how it goes without the loop? Thanks for sharing!
Hi Mustafa, good point. I will make some videos in the new year without the loop, with just the whip antennas.
Officialy confirming that Sony is the winner of this battle. Merry Christmas & Happy holidays! 🎄🎆
Thanks Andrew and Merry Christmas to you too!
I would have to agree with your pick. I have the PL-680 and it is excellent. I am getting the DX-286 for christmas and am sure it will be great radio also. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Thanks for your comment Edward. I think the PL-680 and the DX-286 make a winning combination! Merry Christmas to you also!
Merry Christmas and Happy New year Andre HS0ZBS East Thailand
Thank you so much Kurt, Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you too!
Merry Christmas to Radio Vatican, WMLK, Brother Stair and World's Last Chance!
Merry Christmas!
Thank you Goran and Merry Christmas to you too!
Great video on these two receivers reception ... Doesn't look like you are running the Sony in synchronous detection from what I can see on the display?? Thanks for your channel and videos ...
Thanks for your comment! Yes, I am not using synchronous detection on the Sony here (and also not on the PL-680). This is just a regular SW comparison, the signals were clear enough that there was no need for the sync detection.
Is the loop only for Medium Wave? Thanks
Hi David, yes, the Tecsun AN-200 loop is only for MW. It works very well for MW, I recommend it highly.
You would like the Eton Mini for SW. Excellent on FM, very good on MW, but AGC is a bit slow. It’s better with earphones and in the dark. I use it when I go to bed.
You are right, I think I will like the Eton Mini, I have seen it on Amazon and I have always thought that it looked like a great little radio. I do own the Eton Traveler, and I am very happy with it.
@ yes, I have the Eton Elite Traveller III and the Executive. Very satisfied with Eton radios.
@@racinchef I would like to get the Executive also one day. A bit expensive to ship to South Africa though. Because it is a higher priced radio, the import duties are very high here.
No Baofeng for VHF/UHF?
Hi David, no I don't own a Baofeng. The little Raddy RF886 has VHF, but it is not a band that I use often, so I haven't really tested it on that band.
@@swlistening Many thanks
Hi Andre good listening as usual will try them tomorrow at this time listening to 7580 clock from Ottawa coming in 50% readability on the PL-660 can you receive this...
Hi Stephen, no, I haven't been able to pick up the Canadian time signal yet. As far as time signals go, I have heard BPM on 10000 kHz, WWVH on 10000 and 15000 kHz, and the Russian one, RWM, on 9996 kHz. None of the others yet.
@@swlistening Hi Andre, wishing you a Happy Christmas and a healthy new year this year has flown past my TECSUN- 880 has developed a fault already when you turn up the volume over half way it cuts out not a happy bunny but these things happen, I've been in touch with the shop and sending it back after Christmas at least I'm not short of radios lol don't know if I mentioned it in the past I live 10 miles from Chelmsford that is known as the birthplace of radio in the county of Essex with its connection with Guglielmo Marconi who opened the first wireless factory here in 1899 including the first official radio broadcast in the UK in 1920 there is a great Marconi Museum here as well...
@@stephenwright8103 Hi there Stephen, thank you for the Christmas greetings. Merry Christmas to you also! I am sorry to hear about the PL-880 fault, but luckily you are able to return it. You have not mentioned that you live near the birthplace of radio in Essex! That Marconi museum sounds like a very interesting place, I guess you have been there several times already? Do they show different kinds of radios there? It must be fascinating to see.
@@swlistening Hi there Andre yes Essex is on the Radio map as you say, I've not been to the museum for some time so I don't know the latest layout I guess its on google as for the T 880 perhaps it wasn't such a good idea knowing its History but hopefully they will exchange it and not mend it I've been tuning around the frequencies this afternoon lots seem to be coming in moderate to strong anyhow Andre enjoy the Christmas break and look forward to the new year and your new videos speak soon...👍
@@stephenwright8103 Thanks Stephen, enjoy your break also!
Lucky? That my friend is an understatement when it comes to the Sony and the price you paid. .. Methinks the Guardian Angel of SWL is looking after you .
I think the Guardian Angel of SWL feels sorry for me because I pay such hefty import duties and VAT on new radios, so as a consolation prize I get second-hand radios at good prices 🤣
@@swlistening Yes, duty is a pain same here, We we get 10% or so duty plus 11% vat. That would be acceptable I suppose. Big problem here is we have to pay duty on the full value and that includes postage. That hurts.
@@sentul5558 Here the import duties are a bit unpredictable. Mostly I pay about 30% (including VAT) of the product price (luckily not on the postage also). But on high-value items (usually above $120) I pay 50% duty (VAT included). I think it works on a sliding scale, the more expensive the product, the higher the duties.
@@swlistening It becomes a problem, we used to get 50 USD duty free, then it became 100 USD. Then overnight almost it dropped to 3 USD. I have stopped importing now, the shipping and duty charges can be well over the actual item initial cost. A 30 USD radio suddenly becomes a 75 USD radio.
@@sentul5558 Indeed, the same here. I do like to buy new radios, but I focus on radios that are less expensive, so that the duties will not be so high. I would love to buy something like the Eton Elite Executive, but with duties and VAT my real price will be unjustifiably high.
I do find the Sony’s were good. I hope you can find the legendary Sony ICF-2001D one day. It’s still the best portable even today.
If I ever find the ICF-2001D for sale here, it will be the find of the century! I will be very happy when that day comes :-)
Excellent video as always, just had a look here in France, they are selling the Tecsun PL-680 for 199Euros.......having listened to this i am more than tempted to buy one, thankyou for the video and wish you a fine weekend.
Hi Anthony, it is quite expensive at 199 euros, have you looked at the anon-co website? It is 155 euros from anon-co, taxes included. It is a very trustworthy company. Have a look here: www.anon-co-eu.com/product/tecsun-pl680-ssb-radio Definitely worth it at 155 euros.
Very informative video. And good choice for overall radio.
Thanks Anthony, glad you enjoyed it!
Good comparison. I think the Sony just edged out the PL680.
Thanks Anthony, I agree. I think the Sony is just a bit less noisy than the Tecsun.
Happy Holidays to You Andre! Nice collection of radios and receivers you have…. I heard ChoYong and Qodosen are working on new models with SSB and other features as well for 2025 🎉, we’ll stay “tuned” and see what happens. 🎄
Hi John, SSB capable radios from Qodosen and Choyong willl be very interesting indeed! Happy holidays to you also!
Frohe Weihnachten 🌲 und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr 👍🎇
Vielen Dank und ich wünsche Ihnen auch frohe Weihnachten!
Hi André, I appreciate your choice of Tecsun PL-680 as your best radio for 2024, but... I have an impression that you kinda forgot about the XHDATA D-808 you have. I forgot most of your video comparisons, and I'm sure you've been comparing these two at some point, except I think you haven't done it for SSB signals. Hence my question: what does the PL-680 do better than the D-808 that swung your preferences towards the PL-680? Other than it is full analogue :) As for the rest of your choices, I think I agree. Qodosen and the TEF6686 chip simply wipes the floor with other portables on FM, MW & LW 😂 You'll definitely want to try a TEF6686 radio with an external Yagi, it really opens a whole new world of FM DXing - as it did for me 😜 even though I still mostly prefer DXing on an SDR, even the 10-year-old SDRplay RSP1 - just because it is a wideband SDR. But both the Yagi and the TEF6686 chip have been breakthrough for me this year, each to its own 😉 As for MW... well... we're living in rather challenging times, DX just can't come through except a handful of stations.
Hi Arnie! I did not forget about the D-808. The reason it was not in the running this year, is because the fine-tuning wheel on mine broke, making SSB listening on it by far the worst of all my radios with SSB. Some viewers commented that it also happened to them. So the D-808 fell out because of quality issues. But if the SSB on my D-808 were still working, I would still have picked the Pl-680, because of the analogue tuning and the fact that the PL-680 does not mute. It makes a world of difference for me. The muting on the D-808 is quite strong. Interesting what you say about MW. Are conditions not good in Europe this winter for MW? You may recall, I had a very short winter this year, but there were some great catches from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, many new ones for me. But the "MW season" here was very, very short. There were only about three or four weeks where I felt that conditions were great.
New DSP chips offer many bandwidths, but I have found that in 'real life' conditions 6 kHz (+- 3 kHz) is ideal. 4 kHz (+- 2 kHz) is excellent for difficult signals. Shortwave is limited to a 5 kHz bandwidth, wider filters will likely increase noise.
I agree, it's all about finding the right balance between bandwidth and noise levels, for me 3 kHz works well for weak and difficult signals, and 4 kHz for stronger signals.
@@swlistening I usually say + - certain kilohertz because newer models don't specify + - certain amounts in kilohertz. They just say 6 kHz, but they don't say + - 6 kHz which would mean 12 kHz. I have found that + - 3 kHz (6 kHz at -6 dB) is excellent; shortwave is limited to + - 2.5 kHz, 5 kHz total.
