Chinese maritime radio 8417.5 kHz, and US Air Force emergency action message 15106 kHz #shortwave
I had some good catches last night on my Tecsun PL-680, in SSB mode. Both these frequencies are new catches for me.
The first one is Guangzhou maritime radio from China, 8417.5 kHz. This frequency is actually listed in the EiBi schedules as Tianjin, but it is Guangzhou. Therefore my reference to Tianjin in the video itself is not correct, this is definitely Guangzhou, some 2000 km south of Tianjin.
The second signal is a US Air Force emergency action message, on 15106 kHz. Received in Johannesburg, South Africa. I used a 5 metre wire, plugged in to the PL-680.

Just a short clip of some air traffic from the Seychelles on 11300 kHz USB. I enjoy listening to HF air traffic, and my newly acquired Tecsun PL-680 seems to be very good at catching these. Hi André, I confirm it is XSQ you heard, but you already know that 😜 however, I love the sound out of your Tecsun PL-680, it literally sounds like recorded in 1930s 😂 And since you say 15017 was better for you for that EAM, ut means something is 1kHz off in your radio, either the fine-tune encoder wasn't close to the middle of its range or the radio itself is 1kHz off... Perhaps that's why you thought you got XSV, maybe it is listed at 8418.5 or 8419, while you were really hearing XSV on 8417.5 🤔 Anyway, I used to hear a lot more of such channel markers of other coast radio stations. These days it's only those three Chinese stations (also XSG Shanghai), and TAH Istanbul Radio. TAH used to have 2 markers on each band (4, 8, 12 & 16 MHz), but now they're like having 2 or 3 in total 🙄 still better than WLO, which closed down I believe near 2020, and in the past I used to get IAR from Rome too, sounding so similar to TAH, I wasn't really noticing any difference 😂 sadly they closed in 2010 or 2011 😢

      Hi Arnie, thanks for your comment! Perhaps my radio is 1 kHz off, apparently this is an issue on some of the PL-680 radios. But, to be honest, most of the time the frequencies are spot-on, so these two might just have sounded better when tuned slightly off-frequency... I haven't heard any of these Chinese coastal radio channel markers, so this one from Guangzhou is a first for me. But the EiBi listing was a bit confusing, a viewer (also in Poland) pointed out that it was not Tianjin, as listed by EiBi, but Guangzhou. What is the frequency for Istanbul Radio? I will try to catch that one. And I'll try for the other two Chinese ones also.

EDIT: after 2000z, a FAX signal has appeared on 8442.1 kHz USB, S9+10dB signal. must be another Murmansk, listed as RBW41. Also: 4212.0 XSQ mixing w/ some weak tone 4215.0 XSG S9 in noise 4232.0 a spur of an FT8 signal :O 4560.0 there is another TAH, a bit out-of-band, S9+5 And on another band: 12610.0 ruZZian Navy CIS-36-50, S9+25dB 12613.0 XSQ S9 but sounds really healthy, low noise :) 12637.5 XSG S9 12648.5 XSQ S9+5dB 12654.0 TAH S5 only, skip zone 🤷‍♂ Finally 16 MHz, surprisingly not empty: 16880.0 XSQ S6 w/ QSB Hope this helps :)

      Being slightly off-frequency especially in SSB is a common issue on PL-660/680. My 660 does it too. There is a recalibration procedure (easy to find here on RUclips) but I've never managed to effectively correct the small shift. Maybe it's just me.

    I have been receiving early but sketchy information that the PL-660 and PL-680 receivers would be discontinued as far back as 2023, but it was difficult to communicate with my regular XHDATA official store on Lazada. Each time I would get differing details from different people who replied to my questions and their using the Alibaba translation services didn't exactly help. It wasn't until I ordered a few Tecsun parts from Anon-co and contacted Anna with some questions did she inform me that Tecsun had to put the production of both models on a hiatus, until they have identified alternate suppliers for the discrete components that are required. She did not elaborate whether the company would drop either the PL-660 or the PL-680, so thanks Andre for the latest update! As an owner of both the PL-660 and PL-680, I can definitely say that in a blindfold test, I can tell whether I'm listening to my PL-660 or PL-680. The latter has an audio response with lots of midrange and treble, while the PL-680 is on the bassy side. Both models are susceptible to FM and AM signal overloading but if you don't know what the signs to look for, you wouldn't know if the front-end is overloaded. 😐 The good news is that their antenna attenuation switches actually work as intended, unlike in some other receivers. The stock photo of the Tecsun PL-660 at 3:05 is that of an earlier firmware, without the memory channel indexing feature. The final firmware version for both models is the 6622 and I find it odd that the PL-680 uses the exact firmware as the PL-660. I was expecting "6822" instead of "6622" as Tecsun usually names the firmware number with the first two digits following the model number. There's also the model that kicked off the PL-6xx series - the original PL-600 which was Tecsun's first analogue PLL synthesized shortwave receiver with a digital display. The PL-600 looks more like the rectangular PL-680 but lacks the VHF Air Band and has a slightly different LCD display. You could say that the PL-680 has the features of the PL-660 but housed in the PL-600's plastic case. 🙂 The PL-600 is not to be confused with the PL-606, which is a DSP based (Si 4734) shortwave receiver without the numeric keypad. What's interesting about the PL-606 is that, it is the only shortwave radio that Tecsun bundles with its AN-07 extension whip antenna. I suspect that its internal whip doesn't pull in signals that efficiently, so the extension whip was added to help with the reception.

    It really pays to check the EiBi schedules for these sort of non-civilian radio transmissions. I've scanned the 15 MHz band frequently but not for every hour and may have encountered Morse code signals that aren't part of the ham bands. Since I was searching for broadcast bands, I had often overlooked these cryptic signals instead of verifying them. Time to bring out my dusty Malachite SDR from the closet - that's the best SSB signal hunter I have, besides the ATS-25 Amp. 📻☺

      @@swlistening That's a fair statement, bru. I really have to be in the right mood to go signal hunting. It requires patience to turn that frequency knob 1 kHz at a time, hoping to receive the right transmissions at the right time. Sometimes, daily life gets in the way. My cats ask for food or attention at the most ridiculous times of the day and they also like to have at least one radio playing something in the background so they would fall asleep. 😑🐈 Fortunately for my cats, they aren't picky enough as to what foreign language they'd like to hear on shortwave. 😎 I like to imagine myself being stationed on a light house with a few desktop shortwave receivers in front of me. 😀

      @@StratmanII Very true, these utility signals call for an entirely different frame of mind compared to broadcast DXing 😀 You need lots of patience. But it's the kind of thing you can do while feeding your cats, just leave the radio parked on a frequency and do your chores until you hear something. I actually do that at times with utility signals. I'll find a frequency and then just do other things, like replying to emails, or doing some work. And then sometimes something comes through. That's actually how I heard Seychelles Radio last week. How wonderful it would be to DX in a lighthouse!

    Thanks André for another essential update for us, shortwave radio lovers! ♥️ As I listen, I'm happy to see Tecsun did manage to find that circuit supplier for the PL-680, at least this one, I understand they had to make a choice there. BTW what about the 880 and 990x, which are hybrid models? No disruption to those? Regarding AWR, "rumors about the end of AWR SW transmissions are untrue" -- well, this may be true indeed 🙂 but... They didn't say they won't remove some transmissions or entire services 🕵️‍♂️ See, KSDA only covers Asia, and although I think it should have enough capacity to absorb most of what they're currently transmitting out of Tashkent, Dushanbe, Trincomalee and maybe some Madagascar. BUT the thing is, KSDA can only cover Asia, unless they're going to risk multi-hop, long-range beaming through half od the world towards Africa. However, I'm more inclined to think they'll eliminate ALL of their broadcasts to Africa. These all come not only from Moosbrunn, but also from Nauen and Madagascar. Heck, Nauen even has a weekly hour-long programme in Italian, half of which is taken by a DX programme which, I was told, is really popular among Italian hams and it is promoted on local ham fests as well. So losing that one would be really sad for the community 😢 And congratulations for Alex & Ayush for their reports :) as indicated, MW is still alive in Middle East and in Romania 😉 As for propagation, 10m is BIG!!!!!! What a shame 11m broadcast is hardly ever used 🥸 MW was good the past few nights & mornings as I was able to hear some US stations on an interesting KiwiSDR in Wales, but yesterday when I finally got around to reestablish my own Asian SuperLoop, the K-index rose to 3, and there was no Asia whatsoever. And today morning, the only DX I got on that Wales SDR was Radio Monumental from Quito, Ecuador on 1510, an indicator of conditiins going south -- quite literally 😆 Oh and I think it failed to get posted but I FINALLY ordered the Qodosen DX-286! 🔥🔥🔥 It actually appeared on Aliexpress, selling with 2 batteries - on an OFFICIAL STORE of Qodosen! Same offer on Amazon US too, about $90 + shipping.

      Hey Arnie, really great news about the Qodosen. I hope you will share your impressions with me when you get it. I hope you are as pleased by it as I have been! The whole AWR thing still seems to be a bit of a mystery. I haven't seen any updates or new information on either the WOR group or in any other place. I think we will probably only know when the B24 schedules come out. I am quite curious to see what will happen with Voice of Hope Africa from Lusaka. They don't list any official affiliation with AWR on their website, but they do broadcast AWR Wavescan every week, so I am wondering if Voice of Hope maybe has some kind of link with AWR. Which could, of course, mean that AWR could use the Lusaka transmitter for some of their African-language transmissions. There is a message on the Voice of Hope website that says "Discussions and planning IS currently underway to expand our Voice of Hope broadcast reach further into North Africa and Asia. More to announce soon!" I asked Anna about the PL-880 and PL-990x, I will let you know what she says.

I'm curious of its ability to pick up LW/MW just on a telescoping whip :) Wavescan might be an AWR programme but they outsourced its production to WRMI. And Dr Adrian Peterson's historic features are read by Ray Robinson of now deceased KVOH, which was a North American version of Voice of Hope, hence the broadcasts on Voice of Hope Africa. But then, Wavescan is also carried by IRRS SW on 1323 MW out of Italy... and I don't know what kind of agreement there is in force.

    I remember this frequency was very popular 20 years ago, I could hear Cairo, Khartoum, Mogadishu, Addis Ababa, Entebbe and other aero stations such as Asmara, Aden or Nairobi. Sometimes they were booming in at my QTH in Roma, Italy. But since then the frequency has been less and less used in due time. I think they improved VHF coverage so no more HF aero traffic on 11300. Probably you heard them when VHF wasn't available.

    Hello André, this is a fantastic catch, one more to add to my wanted list, congratulations! 😁 Did you check what distance does this make from you? The tones we hear are the SELCALL tones, selective tones used when they want to talk to a specific aircraft. They normally assign a specific tone combination to each aircraft entering their control area and announcing itself, it is sent at the end of the transmission and picked up by the receiver on the plane. After this, they can "call" a specific airplane by issuing this tone at the beginning of the transmission. Ground-to-air transmission from Shanwick are a fairly easy catch from here, but I've also caught ones from Canada and the Eastern Coast of the US while in Brittany. These are all quite interesting to listen to but as you point out, you have to be on the right frequency at the right time.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening 3 дня назад

      Hi Alain, thank you so much! I was quite excited about this one, because I have tried this frequency many times in the past, but I have never heard anything. As you say, the thing with the HF air traffic frequencies is that you simply have to listen at the right time, but it's kind of impossible to know when the right time is :-) These transmissions are always very random. So what I learned from this specific catch is that I just need to park on a frequency and listen for a very long time. Eventually something might happen. Thanks for the explanation about the SECALL tones, I did not know about that. I hear these tones often when I monitor HF air traffic, but I never really knew what they meant. The Seychelles are not that far away from me, flight time is only five hours, and the distance is about 4000 km, so not very far at all. But still, this is a nice one for me. I also catch Mumbai quite often these days, that is a bit more distant, about 7000 km. But my best HF air traffic catch was Manila, I caught that a year ago, I have a video on my channel. I appreciate your effort in adding an aerial view of the Seychelles' airport and its sole runway for the preamble of this episode, Andre. Makes me want to go island hopping in a small ATR 72-600 turboprop plane! ✈️🌍 HF and VHF radio are the most basic communications medium between aircraft and airport control towers. Larger, modern jet planes generally have satellite comms as a backup system. Pilots generally use the VHF Air band to communicate with the nearest airport tower control, but in the rare cases when they're out of range they would switch to HF. Fun fact: the VHF Air band may be sitting just above the FM broadcast band frequency (108 MHz), but the Air band itself is always in AM mode, never narrow band FM. The main reason for using AM is because FM transmissions have the undesirable "capture effect". If the aviation band used frequency modulation, the strongest transmission will dominate the channel and block weaker transmissions from more distant aircraft. By using amplitude modulation, pilots and ATC controllers can listen to simultaneous background transmissions from other aircraft, in case of an emergency. Amateur ham radio operators who use the VHF 2m band on the other hand, use narrowband FM and not AM. 😊

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening 4 дня назад

      That island airport looks very inviting indeed! I read a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal this week about GPS systems on planes being hacked, all around the world. This causes, among other things, the satellite communication systems on board to jam up. Which, in my opinion, just shows how important HF and VHF radio remains on aeroplanes. When all else fails, let's return to good old radio technology :-) Here is the article: www.wsj.com/business/airlines/electronic-warfare-spooks-airlines-pilots-and-air-safety-officials-60959bbd I wasn't a subscriber, but when I saw this article I clicked on the subscribe button and they had a special offer of $2 per month for a year. So I signed up. Been very impressed so far, it is a very good newspaper. Not as partisan as some other US media outlets, like the New York Times (on the left) or Fox News (on the right). WSJ seems to be quite centrist and objective.

  • @Hiram8866
    @Hiram8866 4 дня назад

    I've not heard that one as far as I know. But I have heard India on HF Airband. I suspect HF is more of a backup these days rather than a primary form of communication.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening 4 дня назад

      Hi Glen, I have also heard Mumbai on 8879, it is actually the one that I seem to catch most often. I think in some cases HF is just a back-up, as you say, but I think there are still instances when airliners are in the middle of vast oceans where they still rely on HF for some of their communication needs. The messaging system used on planes, ACARS, relies on VHF, so it only works overland. And satellite communication, from what I have read on some aviation blogs, while used by most airliners, is not ubiquitous, that is why a number of airliners still use HF radio when crossing oceans.

    • @F4LDT-Alain
      @F4LDT-Alain 4 дня назад

      it's not so much a backup than a cheaper means of communication than satellite comms when out of reach of VHF. Still very much used. Commercial aircraft use low-bandwidth satellite data links for different purposes (including ACARS too, not to be confused with ADS-B), but not for voice comms. Well, most if not all crews in commercial aircraft do have satellite phones, but these are used as backups.

    • @StratmanII
      @StratmanII 4 дня назад

      Small, single or twin engined propeller aircraft generally don't have sophisticated communications equipment like satellite as they're very expensive. At the very least, small aircraft would have a VHF and HF radio, plus the mandatory transponder equipment. Nevertheless, VHF AM remains the primary means of communication with the ATC. At a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet an aircraft's radio transmission on VHF can reach up to 322 kms. Aircraft waypoints are usually shorter than 800 kms from one waypoint to another and on trans-oceanic flights pilots would contact the nearest ATC every 30 minutes or so, to report their current position. Commercial flights always takes routes that are the nearest to populated areas with airports, should the flight need to be diverted in an emergency. That's why there are no commercial aircraft overflying the Himalayas or the empty southern Indian Ocean. 🙂

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening 3 дня назад

      @@F4LDT-Alain It's interesting that you mention the fact that it is a cheaper means of communication Alain. This thought did cross my mind also, I think there are many airlines with quite tight budgets and satellite communication can be really expensive. So it makes sense to me that some (maybe many) would continue to use HF radio. It certainly isn't just a back-up option, the many air traffic radio stations around the world that are still operating are evidence of the fact that HF radio is still used regularly by airlines. Lucky for us!

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening 3 дня назад

      @@StratmanII Indeed. And when they are flying over empty oceans, they would need HF radio to contact the nearest ATC, which might be some thousands of kilometres away. Flights from Singapore or China to South Africa, for example, cross vast stretches of empty ocean. From here going east, after crossing Madagascar and before reaching Indonesia, there aren't really any islands or land anywhere near the flight paths. Not to mention flights across the Pacific, or flights across the Atlantic from Europe to South America.
