Thanks Andre for another most excellent radio report. I just received my new Malahit DSP 2 receiver, which is much improved over my original Malahit set, so if the Sun behaves , I plan to send you a report from my QTH in Tucson, Arizona. 73! Have a great day!
I've been toying with the idea of getting a Malahit DSP2, but it's still expensive despite having been marketed for a year. How are the tuning encoders, does the frequency knob register every click? 🙂 The Malahit DSP1 V5 is more affordable, but it lacks a lot of new functionalities that the DSP2 has. The hardware for the DSP1 can't run the version 2.4 firmware for the DSP2. 😥
Stratmanll sir my original Malahit is version 1.4 and not built well so I can’t know how 1.5 is built , but version 2 seems to correct every flaw I found in my 1.4 model, plus it has hardy construction. The 1.4 can still DX but is fragile to travel with for me and the encoder does miss turns of the knob which can be quite annoying. The touchscreen does work well however, but compared to my new model it pales in comparison. 73! Have a great day!
Excellent as usual Andre and Congrats on the Wavescan ! I have been having an hard time at the moment even though the general propagation reports say I should be OK. So I looked on the Australia Space Weather site and found that our area was in a "depression" on the T index map. The Australian site is very good and gives daily SW propagation reports in plain English. I'll put some links up for it in a separate post after this in case of deletion.
That was another enjoyable episode of Radio News, Andre. I enjoyed the presentation, especially the photos of the transmitter and random shots of the Johannesburg suburbs. 😊👍🏼👍🏼 I noticed the other day that Anon Co had resumed sales of the Tecsun PL-680. I'm curious as to whether the new replacement ICs and micro chips have brought any noticeable improvement to the second generation PL-680. 📻🤔
@@swlistening Would love to, Andre.. But I've already used my funds on the S-8800 recently. I'd also have to allocate some budget for 2025, and I would buy the revised PL-680 only if it has improved IF filters, BFO, etc.
@@StratmanII I bought a new phone this week, so my funds are also a bit short now 😀 Maybe next year some time. Perhaps there will be some reviews from others, that would help.
Speaking of radio funds, my last purchase for a little while arrived, a (circa 1985) Panasonic RF 1680L. The audio is so nice, tuning takes me back, I could only dream of such a radio back in the 1980's, my newspaper round cash would not have stretched that far 😃
@@lew9223 Ah, the days of newspaper rounds! I did that too when I was in high school. And then I moved on to magazine rounds (they paid a bit more), and then supermarket check-out work. This Panasonic RF 1680 looks like a great radio, where did you find one?
Woofferton transmitter in the UK shall be remaining fairly busy for the foreseeable future then. Radio Delta International broadcasts from the small town of Elburg in The Netherlands I believe. Thanks as always Andre 👍
Thanks for the information about Radio Delta, Lew. It does look like Woofferton will be busy for some time to come. That is very good news for me, Woofferton signals are usually very clear here in South Africa.
Thanks! By the way, I will not be using CapCut anymore, I got a new phone, a Huawei. Huawei phones have an app called Petal Clip for video editing. It is great, and it is free. There are no ads and there is no need to pay for premium features. It also does not add automatic endings like CapCut does, what a relief!
@@swlisteningWelcome to the Huawei club, Andre! Which model did you get? I'm currently using an old P30 Pro and a Mate 10. My tablet is a MatePad SE that runs on Harmony OS and I use it with my RTL-SDR and the AirSpy HF+Discovery. I have to get a new phone for next year as my banking apps won't run on Android 10 as a security measure. 😢
@@StratmanII This is my fourth Huawei, I am quite a fan. I have had the P20, the P30, an earlier Nova (can't remember the model), and now I have the Nova 12 SE. These are great phones, value for money and good. Plus, it's kind of nice to escape from Google's preying eyes.
Congratulations André on your regular feature on Wavescan! 🥳 I suppose Jeff has had plenty of time to fill in as AWR withdrew from the show. (Not sure if Dr Peterson did too; haven't listened in a while) Man, I think I'll need to have a schedule of all the Moosbrunn farewells on writing 😂 But good to see Woofferton is taking over the high-power relay of Radio DARC. Until the end of the year, the Sun 1000 UTC premiere can be heard on 6070 from Moosbrunn, and 9670 from Rohrbach-Waal, Channel 292's own tx site. From January, Rohrbach is going to keep running on 6070, and let WOF take over 9670. Guess what: 9670 is pretty strong here in NE Poland, and often literally the only listenable signal on the band, so it wouldn't be a problem if they just radiate everything from Rohrbach 😅 OTOH, the use of Woofferton was kinda expected, as Ch292 was already allowing some airtime bookings via Woofferton. C.M. Obrecht, Pop Shop Radio and others had used this possibility a few times. And for your next podcast, the end is near for Swiss public radio on FM. They're already breaking into regular programming with lengthy announcements of the FM shutdown on Dec 31 at random moments. @TransistorFR has recorded two such announcements from RTS Couleur 3, for example.
Thanks Arnie. Dr Peter Peterson is still involved with Wavescan, I spke with both of them in the run-up to my contribution. It will be fun for me to do and to DX myself on WRMI and the other stations :-) My best option will probably always be Voice of Hope Africa. All the moves to Woofferton are great news for me, I hope I might be able to hear Radio DARC and even Radio Joystick. Should be possible. I have never hear any of these, or any Channel 292 signals from Rohrbach-Waal. I will add something about the Swiss FM switch-off, thanks for reminding me. By the way you missed tonight's live stream :-) I stayed on for much longer and we had quite a nice chat. I will do it again.
Encompass isn't a subsidiary of the BBC. BBC transmission was privatised in the 1990s. The world service transmitters were sold to a company called Merlin which was bought out by Babcock. Babcock sold the transmitters to a US company called Encompass. They are a BBC contractor, not a subsidiary.
Thank you so much for this information and the correction Caroline. You know, I usually rely on various sources for my news report, sometimes these sources appear to be incorrect, even though they appear to be quite reliable. It will teach me to double-check things in future.
@@swlistening Thank you, I will send to you shortly with a brief explanation. The Australian site is excellent, probably because of their big dependence on shortwave before the internet.
