I think many Win10 users will use strong AV software and even AV pay version rather then being cornered and dictated by MS. You don't buy a new car because its available if your existing car with some maintenance works well for your needs. There is no full proof security with any MS upgrade anyways especially with so much marketing imbedded into OS. Doing Cloning/Imaging backups + AV + FW must be a priority along with safer browsing habits.

It will be perfectly fine to still use Windows 10, even after no more security updates are available. People act like you won't be able to use your computer because of all the "hacking" that's gonna' happen when updates stop. I have an ancient laptop with Windows XP on it. I don't use it because it's old and lacking modern performance. However, it still works perfectly. I also have a Windows 7 desktop that works perfectly. Can we stop with the "you won't be able to use your PC online without the latest security updates" mantra that I see repeated far too often? It's nonsense.

I hung back changing to win 11 on my gaming comp, mainly because of rumours about 11 not being as good for gaming, and my win 10 gaming machine was running great so i thought, why change?, however on my audio/video machine and laptop i've been running 11 for a while now with no issues,
(after debloating/tweaking). But last week i finally changed the gaming machine to win 11, everything went well, no issues and its running just as well as 10 did so far, i certainly wouldn't want to pay extra for win 10 security updates, unless i had no other option.
11 is fine now, i know they're were issues but just once debloated and tweaked it runs great in my experience on 3 different machines all performing different tasks.

you sound just like Brian here ..
but Ill ask WTF is security updates ? am I going to get hacked ?> what are they stealing ? pirated games that are available already or access to my accountz which is safe anyway since most of us gave away privacy to 2 factor autenthication and we gave away phoone numbers and extra emails to big companies.
I dont do banking on the pc so what exactly regatding security do we lose as consumers ?
Do you remember windows xp ? the non license version we used ?
Or win7 and the fact is still usable ?
I dont care about telemetry or anything like that because I actually trust microsoft regarding personal data. I just dislike how win11 looks. I refuse to upgrade because of the older games I have on GOG and compatibility, its simple as that.
I dont expect you to understand, its just how I preffer doing it. I dont care anymore about using linux or virtual machines .. im sick of trying to protect something that will NEVER be secure. But I live in a EU were laws protect us even when we dodnt think we need them :)

Same will happen here, after 2025. I'm testing Linux distros in VMs for a while now. Will see what will be the best for me. Maybe I switch before the support ends. They are fine for everyday work and usage. Only some games and programs have some issues with them. I hope Valve and the Steam Deck will continue to help the gamer community and soon Epic Games and others will join and make gaming that compatible on Linux, like they made their games compatible with Windows systems. ;)
ps.: What will happen first? Every game will be compatible with most major Linux distros or Windows on ARM? Both developments are in progress and because the future is for low energy techs, we can now start to prepare to switch from x86 to ARM/other RISC technology like CPUs.

I've started a slow change to Linux 4 years ago. Not something to ruse, because you need to do some distro hopping to find a Linux distro and desktop that you like. Besides that you need to find a work flow with open source software. A old laptop or a mini pc is a good start. At the moment I still keep a Windows 10 system for doing a few specific things, but I probably abandon Windows for private use next year.

Is this the thin end of the wedge issuing ESU license home users? How much longer will it be until PC\Laptops come with a maximum of 1 or 2 years of free updates and then you are paying for further updates. Microsoft makes no money out of OS sales as they are mainly OEM sales, so selling ESU license to home user could be MS next money cow

My hope was that some manufacturer of computer accessories would introduce a pci extension add on card with ethernet cable plug in jack and somehow put the tpm 2.0 chip within the add on card making it usable on older desktop computers. Why can't Microsoft produce such a hardware at a reasonable cost of less than one hundred dollars?
There have been many circumstances where changes in motherboard architecture requirements for new hardware and software have lead to such accessories being an option to upgrade older machines. That is exactly what all the extension pci slots were intended for, helping the owner upgrade to new changes in technology.

If people are relying on Microsoft to keep their PC secure they are doing it wrong. 3rd-Party software has always been the way to go. The subscription based money-grabs and Microsoft's quest for control over people's PC via Windows 10 and 11 is one of the key reasons why people like me still run Windows 7 or XP. You pay a subscription for SKY TV not for security updates for your PC or for basic software that was free in the past like Microsoft Word and Excel.

I'd say the reason they're doubling the support payments each year is to again force users onto new systems. If you're dead set on staying with Win10, your best option is to probably install the LTSC version. Of course MS could just fix WIn11 and most people wouldn't have an issue then switching over. Can't see that happening though.
Personally, I think if you want to use older systems just bite the bullet and switch to Linux for those. I'm still running Win10 on a few of my old ones, but for what I do on them Linux will actually run better and no issue with the apps for it.

Imagine if you are still using Vista until nowadays, and 11 has already come out, Vista will definitely be left behind...

The overwhelming reason is the intense dislike of the new, different user experience. I honestly don't know what will happen when 10 goes EOL.. I'm not looking forward to it, i know that! I moved to Linux when 7 went EOL, trying Mint for a few months, Ubuntu for a week or two, and then Zorin, where I've been ever since.

As soon as I heard about the hardware requirements I started buying in parts for a windows 11 compatible machine and mine is ready to go. Now looking the cost of that extended ESU in total you could get yourself setup with Win 11 PC as quite a lot of the parts have come down in price and realistically what do you need a Motherboard and CPU maybe RAM and everyone knows someone that can build them a PC even they can't do it themselves but just use RUclips and do it yourself its really not that difficult. Just sell off the old Board and CPU there are still plenty of people that will buy them and repurpose them for home servers or home media servers. Not to be mean but people have had plenty of warning of this happening it's not been an overnight thing. I shall be hanging on until the last minute as I have gotten so used using Windows 10 and not for any hatred of Windows 11 which I have given a go . The biggest issue is going to E-Waste from businesses and cheap arses that haven't thought ahead and want to just continue using their old PC and will not splash out a few quid on replacing the guts.

you see, even plan obsolescence was now spreading on the software sector, forcing you over the time to buy a newer thing in the name of security and legality.....

It’s simple, forget about extended updates. I still run computers with Windows 7 for the workshop as this is what the programs used requires. I will just run Windows 10 without updates. No reason to break your back. All the marketing behind this idea is a scam in mislead people. It’s like having the year 2000 fearmongering all over again.

For home users and smb's. You don't need security updates. Just uninstall anything that isn't necessary. Then harden your windows installation. A lot of the viruses/trojans that spread come through your browser and you accidentally clicking on something you shouldn't be clicking on.
For large businesses. You're screwed. You'll need to chuck a lot of your machines or fork out for the licences. Personally. Most office users should just use webapps. Which can run in any browser. Which means all the other windows users can run remote desktop. Nvidia's vGPU looks promising. Chances are they will charge for licensing down the line, once they build up a customer base.

We have a number of Chrome devices which do almost everything we need already. the PC isn't used for anything which can't be done with Chrome, apart from its use as a media server, which I'm sure can be accommodated outside of the Windows environment..

I have a Samsung ATIV All in One 27” from 2015, iirc it has Intel i5 5200U so it’s basically a “glorified laptop”… bought when we needed a PC for home and general use, like school, homework, browsing the web, etc.
It served its purpose and is WAY overdue for an upgrade… I honestly thought it was an actual desktop PC but no, me and my family didn’t know much about computers at that time but now I know way more and I WON’T make the same mistake again buying an overpriced DOA computer… it originally came with Windows 8.1 and the screen brightness was changed either on Windows Settings and this app called Samsung Update or Settings but after upgrading to Windows 10, I couldn’t change the damn brightness and had to install Dimmer to which kinda helped but it wasn’t the same! E-WASTE at its finest…
I can’t wait to build my very first BEAST PC and also try Mac Studio… it’s been pretty much a decade since, now I want to feel the power and speed of buying NEW hardware… ✊🏼🔥

Tbh Microsoft is going off to a bad direction with this one. I don't want a bloated Operating System with high system requirements, a implemented Spyware dressed up as a Rootkit (Because Windows is spying on you without Software) and I also dislike the idea of having a lot of AI functions implemented as well (Like Copilot for example). If the games I play would run better on Linux, then I would've chosen to say "Goodbye broken Windows".

I will do the same with Windows 10. Between utilities like ublock or NoScript and some common sense, I won't need Microsoft's "protection".
The best security for any user is the device between their ears and, in most cases, upgrading it's information and knowledge database is free.
It's a crap business practice to be sure, and it deserves to be put out there as the crap it is. For me, though, MSFT won't get my money and I will stay on Win 10 until at least Win12 comes out.

(Actually, I did (amongst others) ANYWAY's,,,I guess maybe it might be time to start considering one of the premier Linux distro's with an analysis of whether there's any computer type tasks that windows can do that Linux can't ......OH WAIT!! did that years ago, DUMPED Windows, embraced LMDE (my 'flavor' of choice) and haven't looked back ...except to get some data off my old win10 install, which I did easily through LMDE as, LMDE (and a host of other's ) can not only read and write Win files, it can even run a veritable 'chitload' of so called "exclusive" Windows games - AND, do it FROM the win installation in which they are installed ! :) To each his/her/their own..........(Oh, and you Apple tree types, word is that YOU"RE Next!)
