The problem with "The Beatles Capitol Albums Volumes 1 & 2" released in 2004 and 2006 is that you get the fold-down stereo to mono mixes (fake mono) on Meet The Beatles! (10 Tracks), The Beatles' Second Album (8 Tracks), The Early Beatles (11 Tracks) and Help! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (6 Tracks) - A total of "35" fake mono tracks. With the Capitol Stereo versions you get Duophonic (Fake Stereo) on Meet The Beatles! (2 Tracks), The Beatles' Second Album (3 Tracks), Beatles '65 (2 Tracks), The Early Beatles (2 Tracks), Beatles VI (1 Track) and Help! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1 Track). A total of "11" fake Stereo tracks. Plus, The Capitol Albums are from 4th to 5th generation tapes compared to the original UK Master Tapes. The 2014 Capitol box set contains most of the unique U.S. mixes (except 3) so you get all true mono and stereo mixes. Take Care, Marc
Those 2004/2006 CDs weren’t about sourcing true mixes, it was about preserving the original Capitol records releases onto CD. They’re not gonna put UK mixes on a US album box, they’re gonna source US mixes for the US album box. Which is why not many people are too much of a fan of the 2014 box, because they used the UK mixes for a box that was advertised to replicate the packaging and sound of the US Capitol records. They replicated the sleeves, but not the sound
Those fold down and duophonic mixes were the way the albums were released in the US. The Capitol albums box sets were about preserving the sound from the original releases. That's why they fixed the fold down mixes in volume two. Because they weren't originally released that way in America. There should have been a volume 3 with 'Yesterday and Today', Revolver, 'Magical Mystery Tour', and 'Hey Jude', but the US albums box killed that. The US Albums box had 2009 remasters, with some special mixes fixed up to mimic the original releases, but was not authentic to the original sound. The good things about the US albums is the replication of the album covers with the correct inner sleeves, and you get the 2009 mono versions of all the songs on those albums without having to purchase the mono box.
Brian, in fact the " Beatles US Albums" box has unique contents. not found elsewhere. In comparison with the 2009 boxes: it has different remastering made by a different mastering engineer working in a different sound studio. I look forward for your review of the "Beatles US Albums" box, sound-wise.
Cool Video and Great reminders, I like the Mono mixes on US Albums CD's they are seem to be a bit louder then Mixes on Beatles on Mono CD's - I have the Capitol Albums sets too (with correct mono mixes ) So its cool to be able to check out the variations.
Not Beatles but, years ago I bought a Led Zepplin boxset off Wish. Yes I eventually found out it was fake. I just tossed out the counterfeit discs and bought all the correct Remasters from 2014 and on. I made my own boxset. I did keep the counterfeit Live album All That Remains the Same. I need to get the real one still.
Thanks for sharing this Brian. Very interesting video. I do have the official US Albums box which I bought in 2014. I also had the Capitol Albums volumes 1 and 2 from 2004 and 2006. When it comes to the US albums I prefer the 2004/2006 sets as they come from the Capitol masters which I grew up with. While the 2014 set is technically a better listening experience it’s just not the same. In terms of quality, I will say the US Albums set has it all over the Capitol Vol sets . The US albums had better CD sleeves as well as great reproductions of the album sleeves from the 1964-1966 era. It is a beautiful box . You also get A Hard Day’s Night, The Beatles Story Yesterday and Today, Revolver (minus three Lennon songs) and Hey Jude which are all nice to have on CD finally. On a side note I did get a counterfeit Rolling Stones in mono box. The discs play just fine but there was a misspell on one of the tracks. I found out on the Steve Hoffman forum that it was fake due to the CD numbers so I ended up buying a legit box to compare. Thanks again for sharing this .
The real ones also are packaged in individual plastic protection sleeves. Also, the butcher sticker backingis quite different on the fakes though I have not seen it.
Thanks for this. I picked up a similar fake set a few years ago. I paid closer to retail price - so not so happy.. luckily the cds themselves play okay. I got the capital box sets too. Ultimately though I will stick with UK CDs.
Wow, I've heard tell that these exist, but I hadn't seen one until seeing this video. Well done! The Stereo box is certainly widely counterfeited, but I wonder how common this boot is.
I did the exact same thing with 'The Beatles In Mono' CD set on Ebay I half knew they would be fake but hoped for the best. To top it all off the audio was literally MP3's burned to disk . Ended up buying (for a hefty fee) the real thing from Amazon shortly after
I don’t get why you would need both V2 boxes of the Capitol albums when only one of them is correct. Why would you need the wrong one as well? Fair enough if you bought the incorrect one upon release and then got the corrected box when it came out, but why would you need to buy both from scratch? BTW, at the time, could people get a free replacement if they returned the screwed up edition?
Hi, The major problem for me with all these box sets are the ridiculous prices that they are asking for. That is where the market for the counterfeits pop up. I stopped collecting after the Capitol box sets volume 1 & 2. Being a big Beatles fan I picked up most of the pirated versions of the Capitol CD's in the 90's, most with stereo & mono mixes with out takes, after no volume 3 of the Capitol box was forth coming and the higher priced US box came out, that was it. I don't really see any problem with getting a copy of a bootleg box as a place holder on your music shelf as long as you know what you are getting - do the research and cop a bargain, still I'd rather buy a bootleg then a pirate version but back then releases for the Capitol editions weren't on EMI's release list, you got what you could.
The project has a combination of North American exclusives,UK exclusives, and German exclusives,mix-wise,in addition to being all in mono and stereo, new issues of film mixes, later fades on a few tracks, etc.
really enjoyed this video. new subscriber! just curious, is there a way to tell which volume 2 has the proper Mono mixes? a barcode? hype sticker?, etc. Thanks in advance.
All the boxes that you showed in the video I don't have any of them. I just have the 2009 stereo box set and mono box set which I got ripped off on. I should probably get these capital albums. I got screwed on the box sets because I had a lot going on at the time and i was not paying attention and it really wasn't like me to do this but I ordered the box sets not paying close attention on eBay where they were from. If I would have seen that they were from China I never would have ordered them. This was around 2018. And as you said same goes for me the price was 50 bucks I should have known I should have looked closer both box sets came at different times and I could tell immediately they were counterfeit. Some songs skipped, and on the White Album it had side one starting off with birthday and the second disc started off with Back in the USSR. It was just a total mess. Another dead giveaway are the disc were extremely dark and the apple on the front of the box was dark. That's a dead giveaway. A heads up to anybody that's out there thinking about getting any of these beatles box sets, whether it be the 2009 or what Brian just showed if you start seeing them for 50 60 70 80 bucks red flags immediately! Great video Brian. Kregg
Hi, Brian. I know this video is a year old , I had recently re watched it and thought about an article I read about counterfeit us albums box sets ( can't recall article name ) but it said another red flag was the fake us set didn't include the peel off sticker on Yesterday & Today cd, have you heard about this from other collectors?
Haven’t heard that, but this counterfeit set did come with a stick of the Yesterday & Today album. So who knows. These sets are becoming more and more common unfortunately
The U.S. albums box set is nice to own as an oddity but, as I have all the UK CDs it doesn't really warrant listening to. The Capitol Albums Volume 1 and 2 are far more interesting as they have all that Dave Dexter Jr. reverb on them. I still prefer the UK discs as that is what The Beatles signed off on but, it is nice to hear the way you Americans first heard them. Unfortunately I only have the first issue of the Volume 2 box as it is very difficult to be sure you are getting the revised issue when buying online. I still listen to the vinyl far more than the CDs but it is difficult listening to vinyl on the train or in the car.
Nice video but I must say that unless you are a completest that needs everything there really is no reason to "need" both versions of volume 2, you only need the corrected version. As far as liking/disliking either the Capital boxes or the UP Albums box, I have both and I love the CDs but hate the packaging of the Capitol boxes. I love the packaging of the US Albums box but while they sound nice, I was a bit disappointed that they weren't the actual Capital masters.
The reason why this set is a fake is, whether counterfeit or not, they put in a lot of UK mixes on the US ALBUMS. So even the "real" box is a fake. Shameful.
@@BrianBringelson Thanks. Maybe it is more accurate to say they used the 2009 mixes from the box set that used the UK template for the releases. That's cheating to call it "The US Albums". Just present them warts and all as a historical document with their own history and development.
You don't "have to have two" of the Beatles Capitol albums volume two sets to have the right mixes. You just need the correct one with the real mono mixes, and it's very hard to tell if it's not a sealed box with the yellow sticker on it, or have the disk in hand to play before buying.
The other tell tale sign I see is that the resealable plastic sleeves are missing in the counterfeit us box. Also are the boxes the same on both of your capitol vol 2 sets? Is there an easy way to identify the error set from the other set?
If they're still sealed, the yellow hype sticker is the only telltale sign. The correct versions have an "SK1" at the bottom of the sticker, incorrect versions don't.
I have both Capitol boxes bought them when they first came out $50 each..now they are alot more..you are only getting 4 cds in each box..it's missing A Hard Days night ( which was united artist label probably why) yesterday and today. Beatles Story And Revolver everything from Pepper on was the same world wide...they should release a box of rarities..reel music ..rock and roll music .love songs. 20 greatest hits. And Hollywood Bowl
All that effort - - they'd have to be looking to sell a few hundred to make it worth their while, so there will be a stack of them in the system. Big disincentive to online buying. Another scam: Vinyl Richie mentioned how some 'sealed' records are 2nd hand post sealed, such as one that had a remainder hole punched in the sleeve but not in the shrinkwrap. 'Sealed' doesn't mean New anymore. 'Rare' can mean copy. Words sure are ten-a-penny these days.
There isn’t really a sure fire way to tell without checking the actual discs. You can tell based on the total running time on each disc displays. There are much better explanations of this on the web.
Doesn't make fiscal sense to boot that box set. It would cost more to make than you could sell it for. More likely that you have a defective original that was shipped by mistake.
Dude I kinda get your point but man, send the dude his money back, boot or not sounds like it was worth 30 bucks or whatever you paid for it, good lord.....
out of my hands. the service it was listed on takes care of that and made their choice. for all i know he was allowed to keep the money. also, you get what comes to you if you try to sell bootlegged items as legit.

The real ones also are packaged in individual plastic protection sleeves. Also, the butcher sticker backingis quite different on the fakes though I have not seen it.
Just checked the one I got last July for £40. It was second hand and the corner of the box has a small ding but, happy days, it is a genuine one.

Hi Brian, do you know if they make in fake/counterfeit Beatles LPs? Specifically the 2012 stereo box set?

The Stereo one not the Mono version Of Rubber Soul .
