Years ago, I took all my original pressing Beatle (and solo) records - albums and singles - and gave them to a woman I worked with. She was much younger than I, and a huge Beatles fan. She was so overjoyed, she gave me about $80. I was going to give them to her for free, since they were sitting way in the back of my closet, doing nothing. Another coworker (who was also a Beatles fan) came along, nosing around...so I pulled out a 2nd copy of "She Loves You" (with picture sleeve) and told him to go away. No regrets - I'm sure this woman gave those records a good home.
A Capitol albums boxed set in both stereo and mono versions using the real US mixes is essential if you think about it. I grew up in Britain but started collecting US imports from HMV in Plymouth In 1971. I realised then that the US and Canada market was huge and that there were say 3 or 4 times as many American copies of the US Rubber Soul for instance as the UK version. To me, American albums sound great as they are thank you. I would love a mint set with dare I say it an official "Butcher Sleeve", and a singles box set also. Capitol should have realised this year's ago.
I bought Canadian imports of Help and The Beatles Story from HMV in Plymouth. I also remember seeing Hey Jude, but I didn't know the history of it and just thought it looked very odd and didn't buy it.
I still have my original Capitol 45s in my brother's jukebox and I will say even though they are in rough condition the mixes are so HOT that you don't HEAR the scratches - I remember at 10 years old being disappointed hearing the LP mix of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" on my mono "Meet The Beatles" after being BLASTED by the Capitol 45 - other similar mixes "Eight Days A Week" "Nowhere Man" "Slow Down" "Can't Buy Me Love" the mixes are unique and made to shatter the walls!
11:10 "You never know who might be watching" - the way you phrased this with a little smirk at the end makes me wonder if you had some insider knowledge.
Have been re-buying all the Capitol albums as I can find them at a decent price. Would love, love, love this set to be reissued. Would buy it in a second ! Enjoyed your video. Take care!
“None of us are getting any younger”. Spot on Andrew! I can’t believe it took Apple close to 50 (FIFTY!!) years to release footage from the original Let It Be video, to create Peter Jackson’s superb (if flawed) Get Back presentation. In my opinion, there is SO much that Apple PR could be doing with their precious back catalogue, but they’ve been dragging their heels for so long now. Very frustrating!!
I found a big cache of shrink-wrapped OG pressing US Beatles albums a few years ago at a thrift store that I love but I don’t play much because I just prefer the UK albums. Maybe occasionally Rubber Soul or Yesterday and Today. That said it’s hard to go to a thrift shop here in the US and not see a beat up copy of Help! Or Hey Jude vastly overpriced ($30-60) because people think “Beatles = value.” The only used UK album I’ve found in the wild is actually Sgt Pepper’s but the disc itself is worn down badly. Still cool to see the glossy cover and Parlophone label instead of Capitol. Also another funny story. I visited the UK earlier this year and when I went to Abbey Road, a tour guide was taking a rich American family around. Stopping traffic for the crosswalk and everything while the rest of us had to risk getting run over. Anyway, the tour guide was in the gift shop piling the UK vinyl on this family and telling them that they couldn’t get these records back home so they should buy them all now. Not true at all, I’m pretty sure you can get the UK versions at Target’s new vinyl section now, but it was very funny. He had his phone out showing the differences between “With the Beatles” and “Meet the Beatles.”
Great suggestion. It would be interesting to issue the Capitol albums as they appeared on their 60th Anniversary as a Stereo/Mono CD and a double vinyl album. It would also give us Oldies an incentive to live another seven years to collect the set.
@djchancla2451 Sounds brilliant. The addition of The Christmas Album, The U.S. versions of Rock 'n' Roll Music and Rarities would certainly complete the collection, and legitimate, expanded copies of Sessions and Casualties would be the icing on the cake.
Great suggestions, Andrew, since I grew up with the Capitol albums here in the States. And, yes, I would hope the sound quality is just as just as good as the Capitol CD sets! The singles collection in the blue box is superb, as you mentioned; great sound quality, and the reproduction foreign sleeves are first rate. A similar U.S. singles box would be a welcome addition to any Beatles collection (again, depending on sound quality). Hopefully, Capitol would emulate your conceptual design for a singles box set -looks amazing!
Hey Andrew, my first ever album was Beatles '65 (in mono) - spent the rest of the sixties trying my best to only get the new thing = 'stereo' - was really bummed when I had to buy Yesterday and Today in mono (record store only had it in mono) and double bummed when the next week at school - Dolores brought in her (steamed off) butcher copy of it. Anyway would buy a Capitols box set in a heartbeat - if they could be as good as the CD box sets. thanks for great video.
I do love the Capitol albums and was very happy when they announced the box set in 2004. I was one of the ones that purchased the 2006 set with the wrong mono mixes for Beatles VI and Rubber Soul. I tried searching for a proper copy but no luck so far. I do have the U.S. Albums box from 2014 which does have the correct mono mixes for those two records but the stereo mixes include the 1987 mixes from George Martin. I did recently purchase a Capitol box from the early 1970s which was meant for Capitol employees and contains 8 Beatles album on the Apple label….Thanks for doing this one Andrew!
Try the Japanese Capitol Vol 2 box - much better sleeves (larger and of a quality similar to the 2009 mono box CD set) and still available at reasonable prices.
I would definitely purchase a U.S. Albums box set. My first Beatles album was "BEATLES VI" when I was 9 yrs old. I do like your idea of a singles box set as well, but I just don't have too much confidence in the people at Apple who are in charge of these aspects. They've missed many opportunities at times letting bootleggers beat them to the punch and sometimes proving fans with items they wished Apple would put together and release. Anyway, I hope they're listening this time around.
Growing up on the U S LPs and knowing nothing else till 1971 when I first heard the British LPs!! Shock!! Well I’ve owned both collections and still listen to both! Great job Andrew!!
Andrew, I literally spit my drink out when you said “and we’re not getting any younger!” So true. Even we second gen Beatlemaniacs (Im 48) are getting up there. However, I do feel lucky that we are around for all these reissues of late. So to answer your questions, OF course I would buy the Capitol set. Either singles or LPs. I regret not getting the Mono LP box set. Keep up the GREAT work! Love your site.
I don't have a turntable, and already have everything on CD. So as of right now, no, I myself would not buy either of these sets. However, I would like to see BOTH become available for the vinyl collector.
Speaking as a first generation Beatles fan , If Capitol wanted to blow the lid off , they would need to make the set with mixes exactly as issued first time around , not with substitute mixes , and for the icing on the cake , issue as a bonus both the separate mono and stereo butcher album covers with their respective mixes as from 1966 , I'd buy that set in a heart beat !!
That visual spread of all the US single sleeves… I have a few later ones I bought, and played to death, when they came out. My Let It Be/You Know My Name has simply the black sleeve, just “Apple” and the hole. And there’s my Lady Madonna! I love that silly photo, all mop-top smiles from our post-Pepper hippies.
My mother would love this. When her brother bought her the EMI boxed set in the1980s, she complained that the track listings were all "wrong". Love this channel.
I know I am pretty late to this party, but I just saw your video, and this is a topic that has been in the back of my mind for quite a long time. From the time I first "met" The Beatles in 1964 until 1988, the Capitol albums and singles were the only Beatles music I knew. As such, they are the versions I love, and no amount of heckling from the purists is ever going make me embrace the British versions to the same degree. A new, complete set of Capitol albums would be a joy, as long as the sound is authentic to the originals. What I would like most of all would be a complete set of Capitol singles with the original picture sleeves. They should offer them in both vinyl and cd formats. I would happily buy both.
Very nice touch ending the video with the US-only "Thank You Girl" harmonica outro! For anyone interested in the US albums, Dave Marsh's little book "The Beatles' Second Album" is a must read.
Fun post, Andrew. Yes, I would love to see Capitol mono and stereo LP box sets done properly (like the UK mono set). I grew up with these records (I still have them!) and have always loved their punchy quality.
Hi there. This is Mike, I bought my first vinyl collection way back in 1976 and it was the Capitol ones. Living in Ecuador back then there was not to many Beatles to buy, so my first trip to US I had to buy all of them. So I did my saving 3 months to purchase this collection, of course individually. Still have them all, somegot damage in one of our moving. I would love to have and buy the NEW CAPITOL ALBUM BOX SET. I hope like you said, someone out here is listing to us. Thanks Mike Bilbao
Having grown up in the US, I have been collecting the US vinyl albums over the years. What I would like to see is the "Volume 3" continuation of the Capitol Albums CD box sets. This could have the following in it: 1. Yesterday and Today, 2. Revolver, 3. A Hard Day's Night (United Artists) and 4. Hey Jude. I'm not holding my breath....!
Living in Brazil our reference were the English albums, which were released here in 1976. Now that I am 64, for pure nostalgia, I acquired back the long out of print Brazilian Beatles album discography (pre-1976), which chopped the original British albums. Ours were BEATLEMANIA, BEATLES AGAIN, OS REIS DO YÊ YÊ YÊ, BEATLES 65 and HELP. These last 2 were equal only in name... the contents were different.
I think someone at Apple is watching your videos. The tape box sleeve in the Something New image you posted on Instagram leads me to believe the upcoming U.S. albums will be cut from the master tapes. Maybe I'm deluding myself.
I also like the idea of a US singles set, including Got To Get You Into My Life, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, and the Movie Medley. Did you know that Capitol also issued a picture sleeve with Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band + With A Little Help From My Friends on side A and A Day In The Life on side B? And how about the planned-but-never-released "Girl" single from Love Songs? (Although In My Life / Michelle would have been a much better offering in my opinion.)
Actually, the 2014 US Albums set contains most of the unique US mixes, not only mono ones: it has the unique stereo The Word, I'm Looking Through You, We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper, plus the James Bond intro in Help! They missed a couple in the Second Album and the three Revolver tracks in Y&T. They used the remasters only for songs where the mixes were the same as the UK ones, and to replace fake stereo and folddown mono.
Superb video, I decided to watch it again as I'm thinking of getting some of the capitol albums. I had no idea they'd used folded down mixes for the mono versions in the the Capitol albums vol 2 in 2006, so what I did after watching your video was to play my copy and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that mine has the true mono mix without the false starts in I'm looking through you.
A US singles box and British EP Box yes...However I might be in a minority but I’ve got a bit of Box Set fatigue! And they are beyond my budget. I collected about 80% of the 2014 Mono individual albums (couldn’t stretch to the box) but actually found that fun and extended my enjoyment of them..... My preference now would be for flip back/laminated represses of the stereo analogue Albums, along with the Monos released individually. Oldies too! Same with the US albums. This will never happen but I cannot believe they would not sell shedloads. You only have to see what people are prepared to pay for tatty old copies.. I don’t think Apple fully understand Beatles collectors or what they want.. Keep up the great work Andrew
I'll say this having grown up as I guess a 2nd generation fan in the late 70's as a child hearing the music for the 1st time here in America. At the time, there were commercials all the time on tv for those Capitol compilations like "Love Songs", "Rock And Roll Music", and I do remember seeing one for "Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl" when that was released. If Capitol wants to do it right, it'll be massive...but worth it. Somehow make the box with both Mono and Stereo using the TRUE American mixes that everyone knows then absolutely they should put it out. Oh and you can count me in for an American Beatles Singles Box set too again with the true Mono mixes that came out as The Beatles were releasing them. That would be great with the packaging and recreating the Sleeve art and Record label art.
Capitol Beatles albums can frequently be found in the wild in very good and near mint condition. I am in Canada and have built up a substantial Beatles collection by purchasing used vintage vinyl in the wild. I regularly find Beatles albums that are Capitol US and Canada releases. No ring wear. No seam splits. Very good audio. Many of my Capitol releases could go toe to toe with early UK counterparts.
From what I understand,in Britain they did not put out single releases from albums which was what the US did. Magical Mystery Tour is a fine example. You're getting 5 extra songs including Strawberry Fields,Penny Lane ,Hello Goodbye,All You Need Is Love and Baby You're A Rich Man The packaging is top tier. The color booklet is larger and better put together since it was part of the LP as opposed to EP ( smaller record)
Generally accurate. In the UK we had 22 Beatles single releases between Oct '62 & Mar '70. 14 of them were non-album singles and there were also some non-album b-sides and EP tracks. The UK Past Masters album/s (1988 & 2009) round up all of the strays (over 30 tracks). The Beatles had an ethos of giving their fans value for money. In the UK, they had far more control over how their music was packaged and released (on the Parlophone label), than they had in the US with Capitol; hence the different versions. When it came around to Magical Mystery Tour, they would have thought it unfair to ask their fans to buy a new album just to get 5 new songs with 6 tracks already having been released (on singles) as on the US version. Hence the six-track EP (repeating I am the Walrus from the b-side of Hello Goodbye) which was extremely successful here charting at number 2 in the UK singles charts and only prevented from going to number one by the Beatles new single Hello Goodbye.
The answer is a resounding YES from me. I get why people don't particularly like the US albums, but those albums were what the teenagers here in America bought. They didn't care about sound quality or the shuffling around of the tracks because the UK albums were virtually unheard of here in the US for almost 25 years. After the catalog was standardized to the UK releases in 1987, the original Capitol albums, aside from the releases mentioned in the video, were shoved to the side. A vinyl box set would be amazing, especially if they used the original Capitol tapes (if they still exist). Doing so would preserve many of the unique mixes Capitol did, the reverbed I Feel Fine/She's A Woman single being one example. ETA that I would totally buy a Beatles US singles box set too.
Yes it should be all the original US albums including Introducing The Beatles also it would be nice since itll be the 60th anniversary of The Beatles U.S. visit next February
Great idea! Yes, I would definitely buy a Captial albums vinyl boxset.. If it's done right. 👍 I already have the In Mono boxset, Singles Collection, plus all the best sounding UK & European albums suggested by you, so my next Beatles vinyl collecting goal is to (hopefully) get nice, minty copies of all the 'best sounding' US albums. Stereo and/or mono would be fine with me, though I prefer stereo. My family copies that I inherited are pretty trashed! 😬
Oooo! Well done show for us Yanks! I would love a box set of the 45’s. Great idea! I had collected all the 45’s and the covers were always fun to look at as they would bring back memories and smells of the 5 & dime store I bought them at. You could smell the seasons emanating from the pics! Great show!
I dunno if I'd buy a box set, but having them available again coulid be interesting. Specially if the mono versions were also released. Those are harder to find in good state and price. Even if Capitol stopped producing after 87, the stereo releases were never out of print till then, so not too hard to be found. And imo, some of those reissue purple/rainbow capitol of the 80s sound surprisingly good.
Agreed! I have a complete "purple" label collection, which were the ones that came out between 1978-86. The rarest Beatles US LP vinyl are the ones from 1987-91, because they were available in limited runs.
I’d buy a Capitol box set of singles and/or EP’s and would welcome such a set to be enhanced by Vee-Jay, Tollie and Swan. I wouldn’t think twice about getting an albums box set in both mono and stereo. I have all the albums in stereo and/or mono but pristine sets on black vinyl would be most welcome. To us UK fans, the American discography whilst inferior is nevertheless something approaching an alternative universe which is what makes it so fascinating. I would also welcome such a set to contain the variations of veejays “Introducing The Beatles” and The Four Seasons hybrid (the latter I don’t have). Fantastic video.
Another excellent video Andrew! Rather than the upcoming Capitol LP mono box set, I'd have love to have seen your dream fantasy 26-single US collection! Maybe it could've added some of the Starline, Tollie, MGM, and ATCO 45s with picture sleeves! I'm trying to put a singles set together on my own, and it's extremely expensive, especially the Can't Buy Me Love P/S 45!
Thanks for another great video Andrew 👍 I think your ideas for the U.S. box sets of albums and singles is excellent 👌 I couldn't agree more! These would be fantastic additions to our Beatles collections. I do own quite a few U.S. original LP's, but in 40+ years of vinyl collecting in Australia, I could count on one hand how many U.S. 45's I've seen in record stores, new or second hand! We just DON'T get them here! So I would be first in line for the singles box! All the best, Jase 😉
A Capitol Vinyl Boxset (Regardless of LP or 7") would be GREAT! I've never owned much Capitol stuff except for "Beatles '65" and "The Movie Medley" (not even Magical Mystery Tour, I only have the 2x EP). So a vinyl boxset would be really practical! A singles boxset would include cool front covers, so this would be a very good idea!
I think a stereo-only set would be fine for most people, especially considering a few of the Capitol mono albums are just folddowns anyway. A big reason why people are fascinated by these albums is because of Capitol's tinkering with the audio, and you get more of that with the stereo versions.
True, but “Yesterday…and Today” is pretty lousy in stereo, as the three Revolver UK tracks were simply in Duophonic before 1973 and feature unique mono mixes which have never been featured elsewhere. Also, the Rubber Soul UK and Help! UK tracks are pretty rough in stereo. It would be best to include the mono versions of every album that didn’t solely consist of fold-downs such as Help! (USA), and The Early Beatles (USA).
There are also many other unique mono mixes, such as the extended version of “I’ll Cry Instead” on “Something New” and “A Hard Day’s Night” (USA), “I Call Your Name” on “The Beatles’ Second Album” and the reverb-laden “I Feel Fine” and “She’s A Woman”.
@@classic_colinThe all true stereo version of Yesterday and Today (used originally for record club-exclusive pressings as well as the cassette/reel-to-reel/8-track releases) contains unique stereo mixes of “I’m Only Sleeping” and “Doctor Robert”. My copy (Apple label, Winchester pressing) has those two songs in real stereo, and “And Your Bird Can Sing” in Duophonic.
All of the Capitol albums (as well as the UA A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack…which eventually became a Capitol album) except for The Early Beatles and Help! - which only have stereo masters and were electronically folded down at the cutting stage - are essential in both stereo and mono. In my opinion, of course.
great clip: i love those lps ! yes to the vinyl boxset!!! and absolutely for the US 45rmp boxset! what can I say, these are the lps i listen to!!! they are fine collections! Magical mystery tour is proof of the quality of these lps!!!
No real need to as I have all of the U.S. Beatles lps on Capitol Records in mono and stereo. (as well as the few others on different labels). It would have to include something special with the lps to spark my want for a box set. Thanks for another great video, Andrew !!! P.S. I would be very happy if they released the U.S. Beatles Singles box set as you described. The original picture sleeves aren't as plentiful as the lps. Lots of fans didn't care about the sleeves when they came out. They just wanted the records. My cousin was one who threw away the sleeves. I wish I was there to take his unwanted sleeves.
Ditto! Me as well, multiple mint copies of each on Capitol mono and stereo, including 1st press Apple (with the "Subsidiary" logo on the B-side) and also including a STEREO "Butcher Album".!!!
@@georgegbalzano9239 I also have a butcher, mine is mono. Luckily, I bought most of mine as they came out, leaving only a few spots to fill in later. They are complete now. They aren't as plentiful as they used to be.
It’s something definitely missing from the Beatles catalogue. I think a set with a Past Masters-style album to include their non-album tracks would be great (I know it wouldn’t be a long album, but hey). Both mono and stereo would need to be included to fill all the gaps, but whether they’d be separate box sets or all in one, I don’t know. I’m from the UK but came to the US albums quite early on, so I have an affection for them. And whatever you think about their ‘authenticity’ in terms of sound and track listing, they are still a cracking listen. Second Album is an absolute blast, a breathless, high tempo set that never lets up.
12 tracks: Love Me Do single, From Me to You, Misery, There's a Place, Sie Liebt Dich, A Hard Day's Night, I'm Down, The Inner Light, Get Back single, Across the Universe Wildlife, Let It Be single, and You Know My Name. I even have a compilation title: Capitol Offense.
The false start for « I’m Looking through You » was something I always thought to be integràl. I feel there needs to be a box set of all British and American records. It would likely be ridiculously expensive, but worth it.
It's been fantastic that you've been able to include sample snippets of things in the last few videos. It seems Apple are becoming more understanding, plus your using of them clearly falls under 'Fair Use'.
I would like a US singles and albums box set. They are what I grew up with. BTW You forgot the Sgt.Pepper-With A Little Help / A Day in The Life single from 1978.
Great! No question, your ideas deserve to be heard and for my part it's absolutely incomprehensible why we can't acquire these boxes long ago! But it has to be done right, otherwise it's for nothing! Yes, and we all hope that this will be heard by the right people. Wishing us luck! 🎉
One of my favorite U.S. mixes is "I Call Your Name." British version has "less cowbell." If you listen to it, it's six beats late!! On the U.S. version, cowbell plays throughout... This is the version captured on the Beatles' cartoon of the same name... It's hard to NOT HEAR the difference if you're accustomed to the U.S. version... Need "more cowbell!!"
The Capitol Beatles Album Yesterday and Today was produced on CD by Apple in 2014, featuring the suitcase picture on the front and the original track list on the back. The original vinyl Yesterday and Today featured Dave Dexter's duophonic mixes of the three tracks lifted from the UK Revolver album: I'm Only Sleeping, Dr. Robert, and And Your Bird Can Sing. In 1966, EMI had sent Capitol the mono mix tapes for the three songs, so Dexter did his magic to create the duophonic mixes. For the 2014 Yesterday and Today CD, Apple used the UK stereo mixes of the three songs. The difference is most noticeable on I'm Only Sleeping, its mono mix having less backwards guitar than the UK stereo mix. When I had the Capitol album in 1966, I listened to the duophonic mix. When I bought the CD in 2014 and heard the UK stereo version, I made my own duophonic mix from the mono using Garage Band.
Being from the UK I only recently got into collecting the Capitol albums after picking up a copy of Beatles VI. The US albums influenced so many from The Byrds to Brian Wilson etc and deserve their place in Beatles canon. Meet The Beatles is a cracking album and I often play the US stereo Rubber Soul over the UK version. It’s a totally different musical proposition.
I'd say a compilation with the unique US mixes would be ok for those who are looking for the essential stuff different from the UK canon. A full box set should also be made for those who wish to have the whole package. And I believe a US singles box set wouldn't be difficult to make, since the RSD box set already had 4 of them.
Every time I go into a used record store the first thing I look for is a Beatles Capitol Rainbow album. I've collected most in VG quality but I'm still looking for those I don't have and I'll keep looking. I would also be interested in the Beatles Capitol Rainbow 45's.
Great video as always Andrew! I had the capitol albums vol.1 , I really enjoyed it, first time I heard a different mix of “and I love her” with no double tracked vocal, I think on “something new?” Anyway well worth reissuing
A Stereo American LPs set would be nice if they, of course, would use the original Dexter mixes, and if they could also recreate the slick-style sleeves. Unfortunately I don't foresee this happening, but you never know.
Wasn't there also a Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band/With a Little Help From My Friends backed with A Day in the Life single, released late 70s? I know I have the 45 and picture sleeve, and I am almost positive it's a Capitol purple label....
I visited the US as a young teenager with my parents in 1979 and - somewhat aware of the US album mix differences - used my holiday spending money to buy the ones of most interest. As it turns out, I've just recently completed the collection with the missing similar-era copies. Even so, I'd buy a boxset like the one you're suggesting, as well as the singles box (although I'd like to see the two US EPs in there as well).
I would consider buying a Capitol box set but in the absence of one, I’ve been busy collecting the Capitol discs on vintage vinyl over the last year or so.
Back in the 1980s when my record collecting took off in earnest I was completely dismissive of American releases. As I've got older I've realised that I want them as well as my UK releases. I now have all three Capitol CD box sets, although my Volume 2 is the fold down version, and I have accumulated quite a few of the original vinyls over the years in various conditions in both mono and stereo. A box set of the U.S. albums is well overdue and could be coming when Apple run out of UK discs to remaster, but I think the limited appeal of a singles box set means that will probably never happen.
Definitely overdue but with original Dave dexter jr reverb in mono exactly like we grew up with and 45 boxed set with all original American sleeves..it would be the closest thing to going back to childhood..just to hold these gems and never play them would make me happy..that worldwide singles boxed set sucks as eight days a week..yesterday and the long and winding road weren’t included…WHY😩
That faux singles box set looks quite amazing! It has to be done right. The Japanese releases in the 70s had the Capitol albums released with their proper mixes. It would be great doing a stereo or limited run mono box set, should include a book with all the documentation of the mixes (they should get Bruce Spizer for help for the book).
Thanks! It was actually a concept I made a while back. I did make a re-edit of the backslip because if you notice I forgot to include the Nowhere Man single! Someone had pointed it out to me on the original Reddit post I made (good thing I still have the files lool). I'll have to go back and add in those additional singles from Swan, Tollie, & Veejay to see how that'd look. I'm passionate about this Beatles topic and really hope we get something great for the american discography hahaha
Another top shelf video. The remastered Red and Blue albums to me are a waste of time. The tracks on the blue album have been 90% remixed already. The problem with the pre Revolver albums is that The Beatles didn’t spend much time in the studio so outtakes are not plentiful. A capitol albums box would be great instead of what’s coming
Yes I would buy it, for the simple reason that, in my neck of the woods, it's become impossible to find originals in any state better than "thrift-store-50-cent-bin" condition. (I think that's an officially-recognized term on Discogs ...)
Thanks.. I have all of the US Beatles albums on vinyl in stereo on late 70s or early 80s pressings as I started going fully into the Beatles in 1983. I have been slowly collecting mono copies out in the wild, but they are few and far between. If I got the an albums set on it would be a mono to complete my set. I wish I had got the two capitol box sets back in the day but they came our when I was in college and money was scarce. The singles box would be a must buy for me. I love the selection ideas presented in this video. Thanks for the wonderful video and see you next week.
"There's no shortage of Beatles vinyl to buy in 2023" - as long you don't mind stereo digital remasters. But if you want mono analog vinyl- you got another thing coming. If the vinyl available in 2023 are those digital remasters from 2012 (made out of the 2009 remasters), then I'll stick to my 1988 ones. At least, the 1988 remasters sound way better than the 2009 ones. Cheers, Andrew!
In 1979 when i started collecting Beatles records there were plenty of Capitol albums in Stockholm Sweden. They were pretty cheap and as a 8 year old beatlefan i got Help Rubber soul and Abbey road with the purple label.
Great vid. Enjoyed that. As a Brit the capital albums are not where my focus is. But I’d still go for a box set. There are a couple of Beatle American releases I still listen to, to this day - Magical Mystery Tour which I first heard as the U.S album rather than the Brit Ep way back in 73. And the same year my parents had the U.S import of Band On The Run. The Brit version without Helen Wheels just seems wrong haha 😅
I'm with you on Helen Wheels, one of the few times a North American release is preferable. I almost bought a Japanese copy recently, but learned it had the UK track listing without Helen, and decided not to (I have a nice U.K. pressing anyway, so I probably wouldn't even bother playing another copy without HW).
I would greatly enjoy a U.S. Capitol albums box. I have all of them already...a mix of some Apple label, orange label, and purple Capitol dome label reissues that were gifted to me or that I bought from the mid-70's to the mid- 80's when I was much younger. If they do this two requests...one, please use the original Capitol U.S. master tapes...with Duophonic and echo there, and reissue the original Magical Mystery Tour mix with the unique mixes you mentioned. I would also grab a U.S. singles box too.
Great topic and well done video! I own all of the Capital releases mentioned in vinyl purchased in the mid to late 60's . Aside from the missing tracks included on other albums, these albums featured many songs that never appeared on the UK albums. Something New was a big favorite with "Things we said Today, and "I'll cry instead" All are in good condition. Interestingly, I never knew any other versions existed until my early twenties (early 80's) . Such great memories watching this - a HUGE thank you!
A Capitol singles box set would be wonderful. On the other hand, a Capitol albums box set would be a great collection if they so included the mono mixes on side one and stereo mixes on side two. No matter what or how anything new is released It will more than likely end up in my collection.
They’ve must have listened to you. We are getting Mono box set at last - very excited about this😁👍
😁
Absolutely! A cleaned up, remastered US Rubber Soul would be amazing.
I listened to Beatles 65 today, and I like the version of "I Feel Fine" on it
She's a Woman and I Feel Fine just don't sound right without the reverb. There's just something about it that makes them sound right like that.
Or Hey Jude vastly overpriced ($30-60) because people think “Beatles = value.”
The only used UK album I’ve found in the wild is actually Sgt Pepper’s but the disc itself is worn down badly.
I made up my own box set with a custom box I got from Etsy I even included a introducing the Beatles album
Good for my good friend @MisterBiscuits_ for getting some of his concepts in the vid!
Thanks for your thoughts, Bill!
Try the Japanese Capitol Vol 2 box - much better sleeves (larger and of a quality similar to the 2009 mono box CD set) and still available at reasonable prices.
@@crosstownchord thanks for the recommendation…. I just got it delivered today and it’s much better than the U.S. box, thanks again
@@billleary5779 Glad you like it, Bill - happy to help!
Man...I LOVE the false start of, "I'm Looking Through You" on the LP I bought in the late 70's!
You forgot about the Sgt. Pepper’s 45 in the picture sleeve. I would LOVE a US singles box set.
Brian Wilson heard the Capitol version of Rubber Soul and went to work on Pet Sounds. It’s worth rereleasing just for that!
Thanks
Mike Bilbao
I always thought the false starts on 'I'm Looking Through You' sounded like a better opening............
I purchased Vol. 2 the day it was released and have the set with the fold down mono mix. Still holding on to it.
I bought most of the US Capitol albums in the late 1970s, on the red Capitol label, in Bristol and Gloucester.
I think someone at Apple is watching your videos. The tape box sleeve in the Something New image you posted on Instagram leads me to believe the upcoming U.S. albums will be cut from the master tapes. Maybe I'm deluding myself.
Time will tell 😉
I would love a Capitol album box set. Those are the albums I grew up with and some of the original pressing are hard to find.
I treasure my Beatles Capitol CD boxes. Some of the brighter early EQ choices hold up. Plus the precious false start to I’m Looking Through You.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You're getting 5 extra songs including Strawberry Fields,Penny Lane ,Hello Goodbye,All You Need Is Love and Baby You're A Rich Man
The packaging is top tier.
I already have the In Mono boxset, Singles Collection, plus all the best sounding UK & European albums suggested by you, so my next Beatles vinyl collecting goal is to (hopefully) get nice, minty copies of all the 'best sounding' US albums.
Great show!
Thanks Brian. Glad it bought back some nice memories for you!
I used to buy my 45s in the late 60s and 70s at my local 5 and dime store in New York. Memories.
It’s great to hear that others had the same sensory experience like I do.
Cheers to sensory experiences!
Capitol albums and singles!! I would love both!!
Thanks for another great video Andrew 👍
I think your ideas for the U.S. box sets of albums and singles is excellent 👌 I couldn't agree more!
I remember buying Capitol releases on vinyl back in the mid to late 80’s before vinyl was phased out.
@@kalebaldwin5398 Oh, really? How do those U.S. true stereo mixes differ from the UK stereo mixes?
great clip: i love those lps ! yes to the vinyl boxset!!! and absolutely for the US 45rmp boxset! what can I say, these are the lps i listen to!!! they are fine collections! Magical mystery tour is proof of the quality of these lps!!!
Some good ideas. I’ve managed to get all the Beatles US albums but I’m sure such a box set would be really popular.
Someone is listening! All analogue box set of first 8 Capitol albums announced this morning!!! Yay!!!
I would love to see a Capitol albums boxset and would definitely purchase one if it actually happened.
Sounds good. I hadn’t thought about whether or not the box would include the Hard Day’s Night album or not.
I saw you hold up that "This Boy/ All My Loving" Capitol 72144 picture sleeve. Only in Canada you say? Naughty boy! :)
Great! No question, your ideas deserve to be heard and for my part it's absolutely incomprehensible why we can't acquire these boxes long ago! But it has to be done right, otherwise it's for nothing! Yes, and we all hope that this will be heard by the right people. Wishing us luck! 🎉
Yes I would buy it. I'm first generation.
Your videos are always informative and entertaining and there is no denying that you know your Beatles from left, right or center. Amazing work.
Thank you, Lars. Much appreciated!
One of my favorite U.S. mixes is "I Call Your Name."
British version has "less cowbell." If you listen to it, it's six beats late!!
On the U.S. version, cowbell plays throughout... This is the version captured on the Beatles' cartoon of the same name...
It's hard to NOT HEAR the difference if you're accustomed to the U.S. version...
Need "more cowbell!!"
I agree with you. It would Be great to release the US singles Box.
Yeah, released around 1978
I would definitely buy a Capitol boxed set because it would be a great addition to any Beatles collection!
I'd love a Capitol LP box in Stereo & Mono....original Capitol US mixes....also the singles box would be a massive addition.....
They should release the Dexter mixes digitally. CD's and streaming...
Yes, I'd be interested in a Capitol albums box set, Andrew! A great suggestion!
As someone who bought both capitol album box sets upon release. I was livid when I realized there wasn’t going to be a volume 3 😒
I would absolutely buy a Capitol singles set. I'd also buy a Capitol version of Rubber Soul, as that's the one that has the most meaning for me.
There should be a Capitol singles box set as well
In 1979 when i started collecting Beatles records there were plenty of Capitol albums in Stockholm Sweden.
Oh bravo on the bit at the very end! I don't think many know about that one.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
A Capitol singles box set would be wonderful. On the other hand, a Capitol albums box set would be a great collection if they so included the mono mixes on side one and stereo mixes on side two. No matter what or how anything new is released It will more than likely end up in my collection.
They can only fit about 20 minutes on each side of an lp, so putting an entire album on one side is something you won't be seeing anytime soon.
Very true! I definitely wouldn't buy anything that had the sound quality of a K-Tel album.@@DimitrisDr3am
