Always an entertaining and informative video on this channel! I would say though that the Beatles In Mono CD Box set is *heavily* counterfeited, so a HUGE caveat emptor on that one! My own "totally legit honest guv" box set actually has the Help! back cover turned 90 degrees round! The counterfeit CDs are dreadful quality too and don't even play in many CD players.

I was going to say the same thing. You can usually tell by looking at the apple on the box as it is slightly misshapen and too dark. I believe the counterfeit copies don't have the replica inner sleeves either.

I brought a pirated Mono box too - In the pictures on the sellers website It was sealed but I couldn't see the Apple logo properly on the cover its green colour variation was give away at the time. the sound was terrible, covers done wrong cheaply etc etc Lucky though I was able to return/refund and later brought the correct one. The pirating problem is the same with the stereo box too

@@thepirategamerboy12 Greetings from a 60 years of age Beatles fan! I could never listen to any MP3. From what I overhear from others, I get the impression it is basically microsizing to the most tiny and hyper-compressed audio one could imagine, which will surely cause the listener to go deaf.

@pippin - The difference between CD audio and even the highest bitrate MP3 is that the original phase relationships of the harmonic tones are not preserved in an MP3. That randomizes the ambience in the recording, which is fine for casual listening, but can make a difference for multi-channel reproduction.

You have to admire the US albums and , particularly, the quote from the introduction of The Beatles Story where the Beatles are described as coming "from a poor, British, seaport slum town"! The bread bin is fairly easy to fix if the slats come loose. Just unscrew it at the back, take out the slats, pull off the perished adhesive tape, line them up and apply your own gaffa/duck tape to the rear, slide them back in and screw back down.
Bingo! Rolltop revived. My qualification for this sublime bit of fixery is being able to change a lightbulb in the dark.

Even though I'm not a Beatles fan to this extent (I have all the standard albums on CD, which I'm perfectly happy with) I'm finding the archaeological detail of this channel's videos compulsively watchable. Of course I've been listening to the Beatles since I was a kid in the '60s and '70s and started collecting around '77, so the vinyl pressings I had dated from that period. I ended up selling them in 2014 for more than I originally paid, and I was quite pleased with that. No regrets. My copies were store mint, since I only played them once, taped them to cassette, and stored the records. Whoever got my records ended up with top-shelf-condition pressings.

    4. Yellow Submarine Songtrack (2012 reissue)
    5. Beatles 1 (2015 remix)
    6. Beatles Anthology 1, 2 and 3 in CD.
    7. Beatles Anthology in DVD.
    8. All Beatles movies in Blu Ray (still waiting for Get Back and Let it Be).

It has always been 1 of my favorite Beatle records (about #4 on my list). And this is hands down, the best I have Ever heard this album or the songs within it! I’m so happy to own this! The cover and the vinyl look and sound like I traveled back in time to the UK in 1976 and bought this brand new! One of the best in my collection. The 2009 US Albums released on CD for the most part has the UK mixes making up the albums. However, there are mixes which were released in the U.S. that were put onto the US Albums. The extended mix of "I'll Cry Instead" was on both mono and stereo copies of the Hard Day's Night soundtrack. The single guitar intro to Day Tripper (and the dropout within the song), were from the Yesterday...And Today album, included on the Y&T 2009 US album. Mostly UK mixes, but there were some U.S. mixes which also were present.

Well I'm feeling a little better about my Beatles collection after watching this. Previous videos have shown me that I have all the wrong pressings of everything (I've got the German Magical Mystery Tour, but not the A1B3), but with today's video I realize that at least all of my UK LP pressings are in the desirable late 70's range, and I've got the Mono Box in both LP and CD. I assembled most of my Beatles LP collection in 1970 (when Allen Klein was liquidating their US back catalog on Apple) and in 1980 (when I had easy access to the UK albums). I never knew about differences in pressings until about 10 years ago and I can't afford to go back and update everything I already own.
Have you ever created a video mentioning the box set of 3" CD singles? It's a fun one to have.

Thanks for the great video Andrew. The clarity around the 2019 singles box (that they sound like the original 45's, rather than the "highest - fi"), is very useful and persuasive. It may be worth keeping in mind that both BC13 and 1980's Beatles from Liverpool sets may be cut locally in the country of manufacture rather then the UK cuts referred to. Certainly the case in Australia, which is why I have a UK BC13.
Score? Well until the 2019 singles come my way it's 7/10. Unlikely to get the Red & Blue 2014 as I have the 1978 singles box + Hey Jude LP +...... Might get the German MMT though.

Great video Andrew! Fortunately I was able to collect everything in your list (including the 1980s CDs which I bought when they came out). It’s unfortunate Apple lost money on the mono vinyl set because it most likely will not be repressed which is a shame. The same with getting a new analog stereo set. Hopefully Apple changes it’s mind. Looking forward to seeing more content including a video on the Love album. Thanks for sharing!

It's my opinion that if they'd release them individually and get them on shelves where people can buy them, they could charge anything reasonable, make a profit and still undercut the scalpers. They like to make the Beatles items super scarce "collector items" fueled by fears that they will "lose money" and never repress because it ensures when they release the next expensive Beatles product, everyone clamors for it because its sure to be the next "scarce" "collectors item" they will "lose money" on. Why the most popular band in the history of the world can't just admit vinyl format is largely back, and get it into the hands of the listeners at a price that makes a profit, is beyond me. Metallica sells their albums on vinyl in WALMART for crying out loud.

I grew up with the Capitol USA versions of the early Beatles records and wore them out long ago. Not only are those records no longer available, even the original American CD reissues are rare. What I recently discovered are the Parlophone remastered CD reissues of the original Beatles UK albums: Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale, and Help! These CD's are available brand-new online and cover all but the Beatles' 45-rpm singles. For those, you can get the remastered Past Masters two-CD set (Parlophone/Apple). Almost all of the tracks on the remastered UK CD's are in stereo, and sound good for the most part, but the hard-panned stereo of many of the early recordings sounds dated.
As a life-long American fan, I really enjoyed hearing the UK albums for the first time in the order the tracks were originally released. While I still find the original Capitol album covers nostalgic, the reissued Capitol Box Set Vol 1 lacks a number of the early tracks found on the UK albums (Please Please Me, Twist and Shout, Do You Want to Know a Secret). For those, you have to buy Box Set Vol 2 as well, which inexplicably failed to include the tracks from A Hard Day's Night (you get Rubber Soul instead).

+ Red & Blue ARE the cornerstones of the collection.
+ The Beatles in Mono VINYL box set is absolutely essential. The CD version is no replacement.
+ BC13 for the stereo albums (IF you can get in good shape).
    + The Singles Collection
+ The 50th anniversary vinyl editions of Sgt. Pepper, White Album and Abbey Road (their three most important albums).
+ The 60th anniversary vinyl editions of Rubber Soul and Revolver, when it happens.

It’s nice to see, for me anyways, that I have almost all of the ones you listed, and recommended. Whilst I don’t have the 2014 mono box in vinyl complete set with box and book, I do have all the individual ones, which cost me just under $1400 US. There’s a story as to why I didn’t get it, because I had a couple of things going at the same time and lost out on both, but I won’t bore you with anymore details. You are right though. That box set goes for around and over $2000 US, these days.
Anyways after an on again off again 50 journey collecting Beatles records, it may be coming to an end. The ordeal of obtaining the mono vinyls was none too pleasant all though the results turned out to be okay, albeit a little more expensive than I would like. Aside from only that, it’s all been a great joy to my life only surpassed by listening phenomenal music The Beatles produced over a relatively short amount of time.
As you mentioned with UK first pressings, my earlier records, played on lousy equipment, sound rough around the edges. So I can attest to that first hand. Oh well, one uses whatever one has at one's disposal at the time. I’m grateful I had something.
You give good advice on buying them here.

What I would suggest for all the Beatles collectors out there and new fans that want to get real deep into the Beatles music, is the Beatles stereo and mono box that’s because you have all the albums which is great.
I would also recommend the Beatles anthology CDs they’re great because they have different outtakes and songs that were never released and also the Beatles anthology that is the best documentary of the Beatles because it’s the Beatles telling their own story it is fantastic my favorite parts of the anthology the DVD set that I have features a montage of different outtakes which is great.
I would also recommend the Beatles one especially on vinyl I have a double vinyl set which is good even though it doesn’t contain please please me or strawberry fields forever but it’s a great album.

I do have some of these. The 1980s CDs I purchased at the time, and I have the mono LP set on CD. My Red and Blue albums were gifts in the early 80s, so I'm probably good there. I think some of the other items are on a wishlist that will probably be unfulfilled due to rising prices. Interesting that you included "Love" (which I have on CD). I'm looking forward to your video on that. Thanks again, Andrew!

Based on your recommendations I purchased the Red and Blue 73 UK Pressings and as well as the German MMT. The one Album often overlooked is the 2003 Japan Mono of Please , Please Me. Great alternative to a 1st Pressing and crystal clear.

Another way to tell if you have a correct copy of The Capitol Albums vol 2 is if the sticker on the shrinkwrap (assuming it has one of course) has "SK1" after the catalogue number. 4:08 - I have a blue version of the Australian boxset.
The strange thing though is there are some albums that have "Made in Australia" on the covers, but some of the record have "Made in New Zealand" on the vinyl. I've always wanted to find out why this happened. Obviously some surplus copies were pressed and subsidiaries EMI Australia and EMI New Zealand pooled resources.

Including the White album with the Esher demos, Let It Be..Naked, Let It Be 2 cd release with second disc outtake highlights, Revolver 2 disc release, aswell as the single Revolver release. Yellow Submarine Songtrack aswell as the original Yellow Submarine album. The 3 Anthology cds, the Love cd, the 1 cd, Past Masters and the 2 Beatles at the bbc cds.
Also every Lennon solo cds including his 4 disc Anthology cds, Live Peace in Toronto, Live In New York City, the 1988 Imagine cd soundtrack to the documentary, Menlove Avenue, Acoustic. All of George Harrison's releases apart from Electronic Sounds. 16 of McCartney's releases and Ringos Ringo and Goodnight Vienna albums.

I bought the Beatles' Capitol Albums Volume Two when it came out. For at least a few months afterwards, Capitol would allow you to mail in your Beatles VI and Rubber Soul mispressings (with the fold down mono mixes), and, in exchange, they would mail you the correct discs, with true mono mixes. The original mono LP releases of The Early Beatles and Help! were stereo fold downs anyway, so no need to exchange.

Always enjoy your informative and entertaining videos . From my experience I would say the best sounding addition to a Beatles collection in my view and ears . The Beatles in Mono CD and Vinyl sets . I was lucky enough to acquire both . The first big addition by collection was the 1987 CD rolltop collection that I got as a Christmas present The following year . I worked for years to get all the recent 2009 remasters is on vinyl. Not always happy with the sound but sounds way better on vinyl than on CD. If I had the money I would love to get all of the original pressings from Parlophone

Another informative and entertaining video. I have had the BC13 in my collection and although the sound quality was excellent I was a tad dissapointed that my set, bought in my hometown Assen in The Netherlands, seemed to be somewhat of a mixed bag when the album covers were concerned. For example, my box set had a reissue of Please Please Me with a Dutch blue print about some record award the album had received in The Netherlands, but my version of With The Beatles was the blue and green Odeon pressing. I am happy to say that the post 1965 album covers were alright but it seemed that the Dutch EMI just had thrown in everything they still had lying around from the 1963-1965 era to get the boxes complete.
Looking forward to your take on the LOVE album!

I can tell you how to get the best sound in 5 steps. Of course, first have a very hugh-qualily playback system.
    1. Remixed Sgt. Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, and Let it Be. Either use the Blu-Ray audio versions on a Blu-Ray player designed for audio, not TB. Or get the high-resulution didutal downloads and play them back on a high-quality player, not something akin to an MP3 player.
    2. Yellow Submarine Songtrack on CD.
    3. Anthology CDs, the studio recordings only.
    4. Let it Be Naked CD.
    5. The remastered "1" CD.

As an American fan who grew up with the Capitol albums but has now firmly switched over to the UK formats, I still have great admiration for the Meet the Beatles album, which I personally feel is superior to With the Beatles. The original mono and stereo pressings have a distinct sound and are worth having in anyone’s Beatles collection

Apple should've used the Dexter or Capitol mixes for that US box set. The packaging looked great but not sure why they avoided those mixes. Would have been authentic and collectable and interesting on hearing those weird edits/mixes. Interesting to know that the Love LP sounds better than the CD.

It atleast has some of the unique mixes, but yeah definitely needed a full capitol tape transfer. It should have also included MMT even if being in the "In Mono" CD set. Honestly though, my dream is that whenever they do another round of showing the beatles' movies in theaters, they reissue Reel Music & Movie Medley.

Great that you've included Love in there, it's a lovely experience. I might be mis-remembering, but I think George Martin recorded a string part for the While My Guitar Gently Weeps demo effectively creating a brand new Beatles track, exclusive to this release. I look forward to seeing your video which I am sure will go into this release in more depth.
As far as other great sounding releases, I'd put forward the German DMM White Album (on white vinyl) as an immense sounding record. Rich sound, and incredible bass. I also really like the '76 Japanese EAS version of Abbey Road. Not quite up to the UK original pressing standard, but it does reveal details that I've not heard on any other pressing.
Keep up the great work on these videos, they are always a treat to watch!

I got mine from Parlogram and would urge anyone to grab this particular set should the opportunity arise.

Yep, that's exactly the case with the WMGGW demo. It's divine. Btw, anybody who shuns Love because it's "just a mashup album"...remember, as Andrew points out, it's a soundtrack album. If you're fortunate enough to see the show (which I'll be doing for I think the eighth time next week!), it really makes the album make sense. Once you see it and hear it in context, everything makes sense.

For me the essential Beatles collection will be every UK 1st press from the LP, EP, and Single. I called them the sacred 48. And since some LP has both mono and stereo mixes it is 48+11.
I do realize to have them all is very hard and expensive. For now I'm quite happy with my 2009 Mono and Stereo LP box, but I ignore the single box. I would apreciate it more if it comes with their original Parlophone or Apple cover. And to get an UK 1st pressing Single is not that hard as the LP. I've started collecting them for few years now. I don't rushed it because like you said it was tricky. Now I'm own 15 out of 22 original UK singles. Although the covers are not very nice, the Records are Mostly in the best condition. Once they are complete my next task will be the EP. Wish me luck!
Apart from the Originals, I would like to add Red and Blue Albums (got the 2014 EU Press!!), Anthologys, BBCs, Yellow Submarine and Love.

  • @Jimmy.5542

All of the Beatles’ original albums that are on major streaming platforms are from the 2009 remasters but they are slowly being added by the Giles Martin mix as another option. As far as I know, the closest you can get to mono Beatles albums on digital/streaming is through the U.S. albums box set (2014) which is on iTunes and Apple Music.

  • @JamesBlood45

Very good research, completely agree with your choices. Having a good quality Beatles collection is surely expensive 💀 I only own the 2009 remasters and mexican issues which sound terrible but are cheap and playable. What a shame about the 2014 mono though, probably my favorite release of the box sets but very hard to pick these days
