    King's X is the greatest rock band ever! They invented Grunge and then left it behind!

  • @edwardx.winston5744
    @edwardx.winston5744 3 года назад +16

    In the day they used to be called “thinking man’s metal.” There’s an argument to be made that the heavy sound of 90’s grunge actually began in Texas in the 80’s with this band. They had Christian rock and progressive rock roots, but added soul and a bit of Hendrix vibe to that mix. Ty Tabor was an early advocate of Drop-D tuning, which gave the guitars a deeper and more menacing chunk to them, but his use of a specific limited-run model of Fender Elite Strat and a solid state Lab Series L5 amp is what gave him a tone like no other guitarists of the day.
    Dug Pinnick bass sound, having to more or less double as a rhythm guitar in the band’s three piece arrangement, came from playing 8 or 12-string basses. That filled in the lows and mids sufficiently for Ty to solo over them without thinning out the mix too much.
    Then there are the vocals. Ty’s voice almost sounds Lennon-esque, and he sings lead on many songs in their catalogue. Jerry Gaskill, the drummer, also sings back-up. But the vocal star of the show is Dug, who has an unmistakable, confident, soulful voice, instantly making the King’s X sound stand out from the rest of the hard rock/metal crowd.
    This band is revered by other musicians and bands in a similar fashion to the way Rush is. Unlike Rush, however, they haven’t achieved mega-stardom, which most fans view (myself included) as a colossal example of cosmic injustice. They do well enough to continue as a band and have a cult-like fan base who will never allow them to fail as a commercial entity. That said, most people in the 90’s would have predicted King’s X to be insanely successful and popular, given their obvious talent and creativity. Sadly, the super-stardom that they so richly deserve has thus far eluded them.
    Watch their more recent live shows in 600-1,000 seat theaters and clubs. It’s like a church service, and everyone in attendance knows all the lyrics to all the songs.
    You’ll thank me later.

      Thank you....great analysis. I have been a huge fan of theirs since the 80's, and have seen them several times. They talk to fans after the show and Dug gave me a poster which they all signed. Very cool.
      This band fires on all cylinders. Dynamics, complexity, groove, with smooth transitions and amazing vocals. ✌🐾

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 4 месяца назад

      I saw them late 90's (part of a larger lineup) and had no idea they had already been going nearly 2 decades even back then. Dug (and possibly Jerry) are now in their early 70's..and Ty can't be too far behind. They never became as big as they should have been...probably due to a detour as a Christian backing band in the mid 80's even though they were never Christian artists themselves.

      Being labeled a Christian band hurt them early on. Spiritual doesn’t mean Christian, If you see them live, Doug’s sermons during the break in Over My Head can be hard on organized religion. Who are these people behind the stained glass windows? Have they forgotten what they came here for? They can’t be categorized, which is also why they never achieved the success they deserved. They are unique and incomparable.

    Not heavy metal, I think King's X is technically a "progressive rock" band (like Rush) but... since they did invent Grunge I guess you could also call them a Grunge band but honestly I don't think they fit into a category which is part of the reason they're not bigger than the Beatles. You can't put them in a box.

  • @jbm0866
    @jbm0866 4 месяца назад

    Not metal, but they did tour with some metal bands such as Pantera back in the 90's. Some of their stuff might be considered hard rock, but most isnt at all. Lots of 90's grunge bands credit Kings X for the drop D sound that defined early grunge.

  • @kevinmiller5786
