They were so adventurous , having the guitar solo without a backing rhythm guitar to give the listener the real 3 piece experience, 3 part harmonies, complexed rhythms, drop d tunings predating grunge and the Alice in Chains sound, songs about space and god. I hope they have a youtube reaction revival bump because over time the cream will rise to the top

We Texans appreciate how they represent Texas with the flag. In all they are such great guys, down to earth,, and with soooo much talent between them... Saw them in 88 at Club Xcess on Richmond Ave. They filmed the video Shot of Love that night... Saw them year after year til I moved to Austin... What do you know? Picked up here and I've run into Dug more here and with other projects... Razr 13 and hanging out... Awesome Band

A very good friend of mine turned me on to King's X back at the end of '89. We were both stationed in Korea (Air Force) at the time. He gave me a cassette tape with the first two albums on each side. It didn't immediately "blow me away", it was more like, "what in the F is this?". I'd never heard anything quite like it before then, and it took me awhile to wrap my head around it. I thought it was a five piece band,...then we found out a trio,...WAT? I quickly became completely obsessed. They were almost the only thing I listened to for a short while. I've seen them live 20+ times. Anyway -- more King's X reactions -- I'm there.

Thanks! It’s great to see a reaction on a truly great band that should be much more well known!
PS - I can’t verify this, but I think that “King’s X” stands for “King’s Cross”. Just a theory, but it makes sense knowing their prior involvement in the Christian rock scene.

@@GetSidewaysReacts It was just a cover band called Wedlock. We did a mix of stuff: King's X, Queensryche, The Call, plus a few originals. My earliest band was Glacier, which went on to record a cult classic EP after I left. My current band is an acoustic prog duo, Earthshine, with my wife.

The name King's X comes from a game in Texas from old times which is like "tag" but the "King's X" is a safety place where you get a break and can't be tagged.
It was there manager Sam who originally suggested it because his brother had been in a band called King's X which broke up so the name was available. At the time they took the name it had no meaning to the band members which is what they liked about it.
This is directly from their book "King's X: An Oral History" which I've heard is being made into a movie but I can't find any information about it (production schedules; release dates etc). Can't find anything on IMDb and I've been looking.

I think “king’s X” is an expression that means “I promise” or “honestly.” I read an old Henry Huggins book years ago, and in one part Henry said something like: “I swear it’s true. King’s X.” That’s the only place I’ve ever heard someone use that expression, though. It might have something to do with crossing your fingers when you’re lying or being hopeful, too, because also in those Henry Huggins books, when a character would lie and reveal that they were crossing their fingers behind their back, they’d say: “Haha! I had kings the whole time I was saying that!”

    • @liquidbraino

The name was originally suggested by their manager Sam Taylor who had a brother that was in a band called King's X which broke up. At the time they took the name though it had no meaning which is what they liked about it but they later found out that it came from the name of a game that used to be played in Texas which was like tag. MCA: The end of the chorus riff has the Hendrix diminished chord dude. It's not that - whatever - you're doing. Also, you don't need to palm mute the final run before the chord so much, the first note is a hammer-on and is more legato.

You got it right on them not being Christian rock, but being religious. it came back to bite them later that so many religious people adopted them as a Christian rock band despite their protests when Dug (bass, vocals) came out as gay. So a bunch of people who treated them like they had always pretended to be Evangelical Christians, even though they hadn't, felt betrayed.

It's not like they planned any of this out in advance or had custom artwork made for their channel depicting both of them as cartoon characters. I'm sure he was dragged there against his will and threatened with Nickelback if he makes any sudden moves.
