  • I drive the brand new 2018 Mazda 6. The Mazda 6 goes through yet another refresh and you can kind of tell from the exterior, but the interior is where you get your 35 grand worth in the case of the signature trim. Materials and design continue to be elevated in the cabin and, for me it was very reminiscent of some German luxury brands. The addition of the turbo to the Mazda 6 is a nice bump in power, but when you consider that Honda and Toyota have V6 options it's hard to chose the Mazda 6 for straight-line speed. However if that's all you're interested in Mazda doesn't want you anyway. Dodge will happily put you in a Charger. The Mazda 6 caters to a more comprehensive driving experience inclusive of moving your steering wheel off-center. Despite a little wheel spin at times, the Mazda 6 is extremely composed and dynamically exhilarating for the segment. Plus, even with the addition of a turbo, the Mazda 6 sounds pretty good. I thought I heard a whisper of spool and blow off when running it a little harder. There are only two complaints I have about the 2018 Mazda 6: no Apple Car Play/Android Auto and no optional Panoramic Sunroof - aside from that, the car is exceptional. Absolutely what I would pick in this segment.
    A HUGE thank you goes out to HALL MAZDA for providing the Mazda 6 for this video!!!

    Beautiful car! I have a new 2018 Mazda3 Grand Touring and love it, but have always loved the 6. Just couldn't justify it for me because I'm the only one who rides in my car. Subscribed.

    Good review. I appreciate the points you make about the cars dynamics. I own the exact car you're driving. Had it for about 3 months now and it keeps getting better everyday. I changed tires and dont have that much wheelspin. Fyi I believe the side air vents jutting into the door is a styling feature that ties the dash into the door and does a nice job hiding the parting line (i.e. gap) between the door hinge point and dash. It is one of my favorite parts of my 2018 Sig.

    1:12 the new Accord dropped the V6 for a detuned Type R 4 cylinder 2.0L turbo

      Jayee yeah you're right, the old v6 has been Dynoed close to 300hp. The new turbo accord you're talking about is a more similar power figure to this Mazda, but with the gearing in the Honda it feels a bit quicker I feel

      I just bought a Mazda 6 Grand Touring and it has it already installed. If yours doesn't have it take it to the dealer, it is a free installation for 2018 Mazda6's touring+ trims.
      For other Mazdas, it should be offered starting December and most likely will be paid for sport trims and older cars.

    Have to differ slightly. After extensive test drives of several midsize sedans (top trims) several months ago, I'd give the top spot to the Honda Accord 2.0L Touring with the Mazda 6 Signature a close second. Mazda comes out on top in terms of exterior styling without a doubt (imo.) The Accord looks like it's front and rear ends were designed by two separate committees while the Mazda's coherent, elegant design is both better looking and will age far better.
    Interior features/quality/materials/etc was a tie in my ratings. The "6" has a clear advantage in terms of materials and overall looks. The Accord has a significantly better infotainment system, a much roomier rear seat and more trunk room. And though I can't prove it, I have a feeling the Accord's interior will look better after 20K+ miles than the Mazda where I'm skeptical about some of the material choices. Finally, though the Mazda's interior is unquestionably better looking, in the examples I drove, the Accord's fit and finish was a bit better.
    In terms of handling, I think it's a "pick em." Yes, the Mazda captures an overall balance that's their trademark. But the Honda comes very close. And depending on one's driving style and roads, it might even be a smidge better. Honda doesn't offer SH-AWD in the Accord but if they did there would be no contest.
    It was in terms of performance that I felt the Accord has the clear edge. For those who like turbo power (I do) the Accord's engine, a somewhat detuned version of the motor in the Civic Type R, is simply magnificent. And when mated with the Accord's 10 speed automatic, it significantly outperforms the Mazda with its six speed AT. I was expecting the Mazda's turbo to offer a real kick with 300+ foot pounds of torque. But it simply wasn't there. On reflection, I think that was intentional on Mazda's part. The turbo is certainly adequate (more than adequate, in fact) but its performance reminded me more of the naturally aspirated V6 than the Accord's turbo and its performance didn't match either one. I suspect Mazda felt that was more appropriate in a family sedan and to improve the performance of the "6" they would have to sacrifice mpg's that would hurt sales.
    As I said, I thought the Accord slightly outpointed the Mazda6 (and I'm a Mazda fan having owned four over the years). But in terms of other choices, there are a couple of "bargains" that are worth mentioning. The Ford Fusion Sport V6/AWD is the true hot rod of the segment. If one is looking for a close to 5 second 0-60 time and terrifying the kids in the back seat, it's the "family sedan" you want. And with the Fusion heading off into the sunset Ford dealers are motivated to offer significant discounts. Just be prepared for a "50 shades of gray" interior. When I was shopping it was clear I could get one for far less than the $40K MSRP and less than the asking prices of either the Accord or the Mazda 6.
    An even bigger bargain is the VW Passat GT. It doesn't offer the many of the bells and whistles of the "6" or the Accord but it offers elegant styling that won't look dated after a few years, at least as good (imo) as the Mazda. Its back seat and trunk space are best in class. And it's V6 coupled with a six speed DCT makes it the equal of the Accord and Camry in terms of performance. Best of all, as a limited edition that won't be available in 2019 it can be had for $25K or less from dealers that have them on the lot. That puts it in Civic/Corolla territory.

      Hey Mazdas infotainment feels so much better than Accords more budget like sticky/smeary touch screen. Control knob is far nore intuitive but takes some getting use to and feels like lot more premium interface specailly bow with Android auto or carplay....
      6 speed tranny is better programmed than Accord 10 speed not mention another huge down fall for Accord cheap economy choice CVT

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 6 лет назад +1

      k domster: Sorry, can't agree. The Accord's infotainment screen is larger, has better resolution, and a significantly better integrated navigation system. Then there is the "budget" camera display on the Mazda. Not a huge deal but hardly up to the premium level Mazda is aiming for. Further, saying the Mazda's "control knob is far more intuitive but takes some getting used to" is simply nonsensical. As someone who designs user interfaces for a living, take it from me, a steeper, longer learning curve is antithetical to being "more intuitive."
      I'm actually partial to six speed AT's. But that's because I enjoy using a transmission in manual mode, a rather eccentric preference. But to argue that a six speed AT in the Mazda is "better programmed" than Honda's 10 speed in auto mode is fighting a losing battle. It's a carryover that Mazda has used largely unchanged for several years. You might claim it's "more tested" having been around for years, but the Honda 10 speed has gotten rave reviews from almost all reviewers. And the results in better acceleration and better fuel economy speak for themselves.
      Finally, the reference to the CVT is really a red herring. I don't like CVT's but Honda's choice of that transmission is obviously aimed at getting the best performance/fuel economy from the 1.5L turbo in lower trim levels. And it works. Honda's combined fuel rating is 13.7% better than the non-turbo Mazda and its city mpg is 15.4% better. Even its highway mpg is 9% better than the Mazda where Mazda must rely on cylinder deactivation to improve its mileage. And using the standard (though obviously limited) 0-60 time the 1.5Turbo Accord is quicker than the non-turbo Mazda 6 (7.2 vs 7.5 seconds)
      Look, the Mazda 6 is a very good car, especially in its Signature trim. With the turbo engine they've made it more competitive with class leaders like the Accord and Camry, though its performance doesn't quite match either one. Its interior is first class, though it falls short in some areas while exceeding rivals in others. As a small company Mazda doesn't have the resources of either Honda or Toyota. The deserve an "A" for effort. As my daddy used to say about dancing dogs, "It's not that they're great; it's amazing that they can dance at all."

      @@stephenhendricks103 Control knob on Mazda is far far more intuitive it its design and loaction that econo car touch screen in Accord . Mazda uses larger 8 inch screen now did you know and I find it very sufficient in size in Mazda 6 , Android Auto and car play have easy and quick interface when used by this knob . Control knob critisized by some who did not go thru adaptation time / learning curve and quickly got frustrated with it ... yes in this way LCD touchscreen may be easier.
      To me and many it is so much better solution not to mention location of volume knob right next to your hand in perfect position , yes volume knob that Honda made such a big deal when they put it back on head unit when their cheesy slider volume was yet another pseudo high tech experimental disaster. Intuitive and ergonomical cabin control layout has been so much better on Mazda over the years than in Honda's disaster interiors . Power , well to me Mazda 6s much more powerfull and torquey engine can easily overpower its narrower 225 tires .... but only when provoked for purpose of complaining about it :) Mazda's super torquey engine and driving sensation on Mazda 6 in a way reminds me well small V8 power delivery that can so easily overpower the wheels .... On Honda is is lot more fool proof as its 2.0t has lot less torque and wider 235? tires so that combination allows for more careless power aplication to some it is puting power down " better " to me ot is less fool proof. Mazda with tire swap to say 235 40 19s and use of summer rubber will simply transform its power transfer and make 6 feel properly more powerful than Accord. Tranny , CVT is a junk sorry no respected premium manufacturer will use it as it has nothing to do with premium or luxury - it is cheap and econo oriented choice for a reason . 10 speed needs better programming and even that it squeezes more power from the engine due to poorer programming it is bot better , Mazdas 6 speed is far better programmed .... maybe 7th or max 8th gear would be good to have ....
      Choice of small 1.5l DI turbo engine in a large or huge sedan like Accord is far less reliable choice than proven NA 2.5l in a Mazda. Just give these Accords few years and most of these Accord buyers who bought it because their neighbor told them to do or they have seen most of them in front of local walmart :)
      Sorry these kind of buyers usually neglect maintnance and that will mean lot of failures at 70K miles plus.... Honda and Acura have lots of design choices issues to me and are simply overrated....Mazda 6 is a better product , yes not perfect (narrower tires, less legroom or trunk space , lower res camera) but overall head and shoulders better than class of cars it is priced next to.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 6 лет назад

      I think your comments can be summed up by "...Honda and Acura...to me are simply overrated." In other words, you're in a distinct minority in your views. I'm sure Honda can live with that.

    • @kdomster9141
      @kdomster9141 6 лет назад +3

      @@stephenhendricks103 Honda lost its hunger that it once had .... Mazda has it and it makes its product more distinct and unique.
      It takes more detail oriented and more enthusiastic buyer to appreciate it. Honda would make a solid appilance in a good way if not CVT and tiny 4 cyl turbo set ups. Why not using powertrain from Acura line up ? Well it may cost more and it cuts into profits....
