    Not bad advice. You can look like an athletic and strong person by just being athletic and strong. Which takes time and is hard. Or you can fake it by being skinny and just focusing on having enough muscle in a few places to fake it. Which is easy. Really just depends on what you're goals actually are.

  • @gnperdue
    @gnperdue Год назад +18

    A lot of comments are sort of missing the point. You can get pretty strong without getting big, but if you get big, you will be able to get stronger than if you didn’t get bigger. Just look at strongman competitions. The best competitors are as big as they can be for their weight class. I mean, there is some balance there because you can’t get too heavy or you can’t move quickly for the explosive movement events, but that is sort of splitting hairs.

      @@tadghsmith1457 you can pick whatever goals you like - run a marathon, achieve a certain look... They're all legit goals. Rip's goal is to get the 5 rep max for the four big lifts as high as possible. That's how he defines "strong." There are other definitions, but that is his. If that is your definition, you probably need to get bigger. Certainly, the bigger you are, the easier it is to get your 5RM up.
      And, FWIW, in terms of looking "jacked", bodybuilders bulk and then cut. Look at Chris Bumstead's channel. Dude chows to get big (strong is a by-product) and then cuts to get a look. But you can't get big without eating.

    I respect Mark’s opinion, though I don’t know how many people are conflating big and strong with ripped. Very few are both. I caution people with regards to focusing too much on bodyweight. If you are making progress; getting stronger and looking bigger. That scale can throw a wrench in your motivation. There is sometimes a significant difference from one person to the next when it comes to bone structure, which is a big part of your bodyweight. You can literally take two different people of the same height, same muscle mass, and one would be quite fat at 200 pounds and the other would look skinny because of how different their bone thicknesses are. Two members of my family have this incredible juxtaposition. There is a handful of other things besides thickness. Some people’s shoulders are so narrow that they have to get very strong with lateral raises when carrying in the groceries. Others can have arms hang loosely to the side because of their shoulder width. The same with hips. The same with arms and legs. There’s a bunch of ways your bone structure can form. A former coworker of mine was the same height as me, but everyone did not believe that he was only six feet tall because his shoulders were so high and his neck was so short that he just looked way bigger. It’s not that the scale is meaningless. The scale can help you compare previous you to future you. Are you putting on weight? Are you losing weight? But I would caution against comparing your weight to others because that is likely to have nothing but negative impacts on your motivation when you do that. People are different. If you can kill your previous self, you’re always on the right track.

    My biggest takeaway from being ripped and in public is that it makes people uneasy. Pretty girls get self-conscious about their own physical condition (like you care), the gaunt face has people treating you like a vampire (you may not enter!). My blunt friend referred to me as "compact". I'm not fixated on my size but that stuck in my craw a bit. Of course people hate the antisocial dietary habits.
    I have found that girls flirt with you more as a "big, strong man" that is not an OC freak. People just generally like you better. Arms are real big compared to last year.

Others chest. So I’ve come to learn that each gym is similar to a martial arts dojo where the Master of the gym is the teacher. And each Teacher specializes in the craft of Martial art that _they_ have dedicated their life to. So I like to take what I’ve learned from a couple different ones so that I can be a mixed martial artist so to speak. I’m talking about the mental understanding. It’s really interesting because majority produce results it’s just a matter of what you want to do.

      Mitch Hooper, an elite, enhanced, professional athlete isn’t the same person that would benefit from squatting fives on a weekly basis. Starting strength is for novice, or beginner, strength training, hence the name ‘starting’ strength.
