Upland farmers - join us in demanding better support from the Government

  • The uplands have - and are - being overlooked in England’s agriculture transition.
Despite the Government’s claims to offer more support for nature-friendly farming in areas like James' in Cumbria, many farmers are being left behind.
Right now, the Government is supporting fewer farmers to deliver this sort of action compared to what it did in the past, and we’ve seen an 80% decrease in the number of Higher Tier Agreements being approved compared to a decade ago.
Many farmers have applied to the schemes this year with an appetite to do a lot more for their land, but they’ve been denied access. There are many more who haven’t bothered applying because they expect to be rejected.
We need schemes that will actually support farmers, finance the farming transition and reward ambitious land management.
If, like James, you’ve had enough of the disappointments and the lost opportunities for our farms and the landscapes we call home to be properly supported, then please sign your name on his letter to the Government.
