Removing the muffler on a Jeep Wrangler JKU. I couldn't find a how to one on RUclips for assistance so I made one. Mistakes are made hope you learn from mine.
Muffler hanger removal tool didn't do it on my JK. Not enough room to use it and the hanger bars were too long for the tool to fully push the hanger bar out of the rubber hanger on the one side where I could use it. To make matters worse, my muffler was affixed to the exhaust pipe with a rivet which made it impossible to twist and move the muffler to free it from the pipe. Eventually I just got out a side grinder and started cutting. 4 hours later and the muffler was free. And this was on a fairly new wrangler, less than 4000 miles and no rust on the pipes. Glad to see that somebody else had a similar fight to mine. The damn rivets holding the pipes together seem completely unescessary to me.
I juststarted fighting with the rubber hangar's too. Figured a little google would help. I'm not even replacing the exhaust but the factory tow the damn 6" bolts are too long and put in from the back so I gotta drop the muffler
There's a tool called an exhaust hanger removal tool, basically a clamp that makes taking off the rubber hangers much easier. Nice KO2 tires I have the same ones
My new exhaust has been sitting in the box for a few weeks, not looking forward to removal of the factory exhaust. After seeing this, I have decided to go straight to the sawzall and cut off wheel! Thanks for posting.
I'm 2+ days into this BS. "Under an hour" job they said. '14 jk too, no reason for a rusted shut clamp, no salts on the road here even.. Bought a Sawzall just for this job. Waiting for charge #2 to complete
If you're talking about the clamp right before the muffler, I know exactly what you're talking about. I just spent the last two days trying ratchets, blow torches, etc. trying to get that nut off and i ended up just cutting off the clamp with a hack saw
Ha, damn that f'n clamp bolt sticking up. I was doing one ratchet a time for like 20 minutes to get that thing loose! Also, I thought that y-pipe junction would never budge until I torqued it from the ass end of the pipe like you did... then it was super easy.
I watch a lot of auto repair channels and the boy up in the North East really struggle with a lot of rusted vehicles. There favorite tools are the sawzall and torch.
So i was watching these muffler videos apparently for the second time! lol I didn't realized i had watched them until half way into the install when i scrolled down and saw i had left a comment on the video! ugh...

Just did this, get a degreaser on where the muffler attaches to the piping, and cut the rubber mounts as they are 10 dollar replacement

channel locks get those hangers off easy!
Nice job! funny and informational
Does this pass inspection
No inspecting in Nevada but it doesn't change the catalytic converter so should be fine. I assume everything is banned in California.
Thank You
Thanks a lot for this, I already tried this but I just couldn't do it (didn't have WD40)
