- Hey everybody, Mike Iaconelli back out in the shop with another great video for you today! In today's episode, we're diving into my top four baits for the month of August. It's the hottest month of the year, whether you're in California, Maine, Texas, or Ohio. August means extreme heat, scorching water temperatures, and challenging fishing conditions. So, what baits should you use when the heat is on? I've got you covered with my top picks to help you catch more fish despite the blazing summer weather.
First, we'll break it down by region. For those up north, my go-to baits are the Ned rig and the Neko rig. The Ned rig is perfect for those tough August days when the fish are skittish from all the boat traffic. It's a simple jig head with a stubby bait, and it works wonders for Smallmouth, Spotted Bass, and Largemouth. The Neko rig is another finesse option that's easy to rig and incredibly effective. For my friends in the south, dealing with oppressive heat, you'll want to focus on thicker cover. The punch rig is a must-have for punching through dense mats, while a hollow-bodied frog is perfect for working around heavy cover and under docks. These four baits will keep you catching fish all through the hottest month of the year!

Hey man, this video is really helpful and it connected some dots for me. I live in Missouri. It’s not necessarily south but it’s hot all summer and it is heavy grass conditions in my lake. It’s like 6 foot clear lake so a lot of sunlight and man is their grass and when I go fishing, there’s so much life I see in the mats and in the thick of it, but I’m only throwing a half ounce Texas rig so my weight can’t even get to the bottom and just sits on top of the mats andevery time I seem to catch fish at this year it’s next to the Matt dragon hopping on the bottom so this punching method is gonna really work I think
I’m glad to see I’m not the only dude who has a work bench that is actually used!

Grenades…. Only grenades …mainly because of the dozen lakes in my area, only one has a decent bass population 😢. The rest are full of white bass, hybrids, gar, drum , carp and stunted catfish … Southwest Oklahoma .

Ffs doesn’t catch fish. I thought the same thing until I bought it and quickly realized they only eliminate dead water. Fish more often swim away from lures than bite them.
