That's some great stuff Tyler. I have just recently added a permanent drop shot set-up to my arsenal and can't imagine not having one every time I go out. However, I'm definitely guilty of your first topic. I cast out and twitch that bait all the way back to the boat. I have had pretty good success with that....but what if smoothing that bait back to boat gets me more? I will definitely be trying that out the next time I'm on the water. Thanks! And also, thanks for jumping right into your topics. As someone who watches a lot of RUclips fishing videos, it drives me crazy when people spend the first 5 minutes of a 10 minute video telling people to subscribe and hit the like button, yadda, yadda, yadda. So I appreciate it when others jump right in like you're doing.
Dude, You hit this on 100% everything you touched on is key to being efficient at drop shot fishing. I do seminars on this and these are key points that I feature, especially for beginners. I learned from Aaron before he left us, Ike and Shaw. Great info Sir👍
Thanks Tyler....I just started using the drop shot at the end of last season and looking forward to using it this upcoming fishing season. This was super helpful!
Great video! Actually tried your techniques in 2024 and the results were game changing. I caught more bass this year than any other year. The Roboworm on a drop shot is now my go to method. Thank you!
Drop shot with heavier weight can be advantageous when fish are aggressive and you want to get the bait down faster. Don’t remember the pro’s name but he was talking on the Smallmouth Crush podcast about how his power fishing with a drop shot worked and how he wanted to slam that bait to the bottom to trigger reaction bites, and he would only leave it there for a few seconds before retrieving and repeating. Most bites were on the initial drop. Anyway the point is there are exceptions to these “rules”
Good tips Tyler, last Thursday I caught a 4.7 lb. largemouth on a 4" MMIII Roboworm. Like you, I stick with Roboworms and also use the Berkeley Flatworm quite a bit.
Thanks Tyler! Most of the fishing I do is in shallow water so I go weightless because I love a very slow fall but in deeper water adding a split shot or 2 for a drop shot is a must. I only give a soft pop to get it off the bottom to slow fall again.
Hey Tyler, I REALLY love your line/knot test videos. I know what your choice of knots is for this technique. I would love it if you would do a knot strength test on drop shot knots. Most knots that we tie for DS are not 100% knots. Which one is best?
Nothin like good old regurgitated, basic, common, industry norm info. "I see a lot of guys..." "I get a Lotta questions about"... no. No you don't. You watch a lot of RUclips videos and repeat what you hear. Even telling stories that other guys have told and re branding them as your own.
I've been using a fluke style bait on an offset hook for my drop shot set-ups for windy days. Works great! My friends and other people constantly tells me i'm doing it wrong but they always shut up when I pull out the bigger bass, every time. On non-windy days, I will use a straight worm.
I started using a drop shot when I just started out fishing from shore for smallies. Man you are right. Being patient with and just letting sit there feeling the bottom is the only way to fish it. BYW Berkeley max scent minnow is the best by far drop shot ever. Best place to find em is at Walmart.
@@rogermendez7266 I just tied it on like a normal dropshot hook. I run braid to a Fluoro leader. I left the dropper line from hook to weight long, little over two feet, used a size heavier weight than normal. Twitch twitch pause lift slow reel twitch twitch repeat. Smallies and largemouth ate it. Didn’t work well vertical. Cast and retrieve was better, but it’s my first summer trying it. Lots of experimenting to do.
I keep a drop shot tied up all year round. Dedicated dobyns fury med light finesse rod always has a drop shot tied on. I agree 100% that too much action is a no-no. I usually throw it right up near grass lines or near cover where fish are being picky and let it sit. Once I learned to be patient and barely move that thing at all, I changed my dropshot game. Robo worms, some tini jackal plastics, etc.. work so so well.
When I started dropshotting was when I marked fish in 35'+. I didn't want a heavy weight to crash to the bottom, so I used...3/16. And I use 3/16 for everything from 10' to 40'. It can take 30-40 seconds to reach bottom so it wouldn't work in current.
Out here in Cali drop shotting is used A LOT. When the bite is good and they are biting a bit of action will work. But 90% of the time just letting it sit gets the bite. Or like you are saying just very subtle movements. The shaking thing just has never worked for me. Cool video. Less is better it's a game of patience. And like you said you are trying to get a fish to bite that won't eat anything else. Margarita mutilator is super popular color. I don't see why the weight would really matter. If you're shaking it, it doesn't make a difference. The weight will make it drop faster. Now if you're fishing around cover and it's moving and dropping the weight will matter. Not something I deal with here, but plausible as you said you noticed a difference. I like 1/4 I can feel the bait better, 3/16 is ok but 1/4 is my go to now.
I just learned about the drop shot, and boy was i doing it wrong! Everything he said the mistakes anglers make i was doing, now after watching Tyler i feel more confident about using the technique, and not let the older guts beat me. I also noticed using a spincast reel seems better than baitcast, but i could be wrong.. anyway i learned something today, and im going to get those robo worms
Thanx Tyler. You didn't get on the flat worm ban wagon? They sure seem to like it. Any experience with other straight tail worms. The Zoom finesse has put a few bass inthe boat and the trick worm has caught some largemouth and big smallies.
Man this so true. I fished Champlain with my dad for the first time ever and I was using 1/8 oz tear shape tungsten drop shot weight fishing shallow rocky banks and it was to light so I switched to a 3/16 oz weight because we were fishing shallow but is was a pretty calm day just little bit of wind and boy did they start biting.
I remember a day fishing with one of my buddies fairly early spring it wasn't a drop shot but a shaky head. All I was doing was sitting in the back of the boat feet up on the motor holding the pole literally dragging it with no action. I'm sure I out fished him that day 5 to 1.
So, if you're fishing in the Winter when the bass want less action on a bait, would it be better to use a heavier weight? You said a heavier weight will limit the baits action. Thanks
Could be, if you are also not imparting much movement. If you are moving/dragging the bait a lot, that’s going to deter winter fish more than micro movements permitted by lighter weight.
2nd time drop shotting today. And what do I do? Yep lots of action and no bites. The first time was in 2016 and I thought screw it. Going to keep trying your way. Thanks
I am a dropshot addict. Straight tail 4.5” and 6.0” Roboworms are the juice. Top three are Aaron’s Pro Shad, SXE Shad, Margarita Mutilator. My other is a Z-man Long Shotz Goby Bryant.
Was co-angling a tournament this last weekend and my boater smokkkked me in the morning when we were both throwing similar baits on our dropshots. I started paying attention to what he was doing different and noticed he would just let it sit way longer than I ever would and he'd get bit during those long pauses over and over again. As soon as I slowed down I filled my bag and started culling. Honestly this is probably the same across a lot of techniques.
Excellent video (Again). Took 12 place a while back on the wolf River up north. All of my fish were caught on a drop shot robo worm. I am curious, what size hook do you use with your robo worms?
Another thing is , don’t set the hook hard if not at all ! Sometimes just reeling it in sets it good enough! Plus tie a palomar knot . The new fancy not that makes the hook stick straight out is one of the weakest knots in fishing!
Spot-on...pun intended. Let the only action while dragging be from the weight creeping the bottom. Smallest weight and hook you can get away with, and KISS. I have one particular color roboworm not mentioned in the video that I'd buy 1000 at a time if I could get a good deal on them. Last time I bought them I got all 13ish packs on the hook, lol.
Just learning plastics/ drop shot.. would help as there are so many brands, stiles etc….. SUGGESTING… when you speak of a plastic, have one close by to show while speaking.. I can see and hear, better what you talking about… or guess insert a picture of the product thank you
My fave drop shot bait was Jackall’s Cross Tail Shad. I noticed that Sail wasn’t carrying it this year in Canada … anyone know if they’ve been discontinued? It’s a shame if so, because it would be like crack to smallies!
I fish my drop shots with a Shimano Curado BFS. Better casting, eliminated spinning reels from my finesse fishing. Catches are more fun with BFS. Have you tried it?
I did this last year and ended up almost never skunking because of it. Seriously the Margarita Mutilator robo worm is awesome, followed by the June bug chartreuse for me. Also caught some of my biggest fish on it.
Tyler if you want a seriously killer dropshot bait and I mean better than anything I've seen from any major bait co. You need to check out paul krews custom baits, specifically his 3.5 deopshot minnow absolutely killer hand pour
i always fish a roboworm on my drop shots but i notice as it gets colder and i wanna dead stick it, the action isn’t great it just kind of hangs. do you let it sink to the bottom on slack line? or is this not a problem?
