Just caught a pb tonight. I fought that fish for 5 mins. The only thing in my head was this video. Don't rush getting it in. 5.58lbs on a Canadian nightcrawler, no weight or bobber.

Best tip is stay off your phone during the night, it will literally mess up your focus, your eyes adjusted to the darkness than the bright screen will throw them off

Don't discount the chatterbait mini flashback,on a med/light spinning rod with 6lb braid n a leader,the vibration is crazy n I catch really nice bass n lots big crappie, catfish ,walleye, big white perch ,it's a machine, my other favorite is size you featured

I've been using a bladed jig as a replacement for a square bill in natural grassy lakes in upstate NY for years with incredible success due to it's "weedlessness". But have recently found it works just as well for smallmouth in rocky lakes. The smallmouth tend to follow it and not necessarily hit the bait during a steady retrieve as opposed to largemouth. So now I kill the retrieve and let it fall to the bottom and hop it a few times and the smallmouth crush it as it hops up and falls again!

I caught my 1st few fish on a chatterbait on a rainy day. This was 2 years ago. Have never caught another fish on a chatter since 😢

I had access to a big private dock from May 1 - November a couple years ago on the Pend Orielle river in Washington. This dock was also on the outer curve of the river and got a lot of current when the damn was opened up. The best places for large mouth was the slope break, which also coincided with a thick outside weed line, and the backside near the walkway ramp. The smallies were 50ft farther out in 20 feet of water at the edge of the dock. I could also target old pilings out in the river that acted as current breaks and held smallies. I realize the tactics are different when fishing from a dock but the holding patterns of the bass can be closely observed if you walk really quiet.

Some really good stuff on here. I haven’t thought of using a swimbait as a finder lure around docks. I definitely have learned it can take 20 casts sometimes to catch a fish on a dock. Whether it is just showing them the lure til they get mad or if it’s just that subtle angle you need to hit, sometimes some extra time on a high yield dock can pay off. I especially love the first dock on a major cove or creek channel break.

Today I held the door for an older woman and she over heard me talking to the store owner about fishing cause I’m new here. The same woman saw me later, standing by the river looking for somewhere to fish and she showed me a point by her church with 2 abandoned docks right on the river. I just happened to bird nest the other day and wanted to grab some new line and that was the closest store. Kindness goes pretty far.

Nobody really talks about this but if my casting game was a little better I could put my bait in spots that nobody else has...even though this area is highly pressured. Seriously,casting ability is very very important. If you want to catch the caliber of fish that nobody else is able to do,you gotta cast better. With top notch casting ability,you can go out there without nearly as much equipment and baits and still out fish the richest guy on the water,casting ability is absolutely important.

There is a very popular lure in Japan called I motion plug you probably know about it. There is always a time fish react better to less motion.

Spot on with the rod choice. Use a St. Croix “Rip N/Chatter” rod with 17/20lbs mono and have a great hookup ratio.

I was one of those “I don’t catch them on a chatterbait” guys. My tip to everyone, find a fishing day that has a little wind and a little cloud cover and just lock it in your hands . That was how i gained confidence in the bladed jig and it’s paid off in tournament fishing.

I have deck lights, however mine are green so not to hurt your night vision, and I use a marker to cover the lens to dim them down even more. I mainly use them to identify the edges of my deck so not to mis-step and end up in the water.

Hey Tyler. Do you crank your drag down for smallies, or let them pull drag? Do you find you pull the hooks when you crank the drag even when you use flouro and glass/composit rods?? I’ve lost several huge smallies on the graphite with flouro so I just purchased my first composite rod. Thanks

I use the 3.5 inch Hog Farmer spunk shad on all my mini max chatterbaits, and the 4.5 inch on the regular size chatterbaits

I always stop and go my crank baits and spinner baits. It always seems to help. Deep Cranking king David Fritz says to “always” pause your retrieve on a crank bait in the last 10-20 feet after a long cast. Those big bass just follow the crank bait to the boat. One technique I am going to start doing soon is changing out my 10-12 pound test Fluorocarbon crank bait line to a braid to fluorocarbon set up. I been reading Fluorocarbon line still stretches and the erratic retrieve we introduce to the cast is not as pronounced as we once thought. Using Fluorocarbon the retrieve is more like a crank, the slow down. Where when using braid to fluorocarbon, with no line stretch, when you stop cranking, the bait stops moving.

Is a 1/2oz min max to heavy? Also can i used regular sized trailers (3-4in) or should i get smaller

100% agree on your advice about rod. Changed my mind about chatter bait when I got a specific rod for it. ALX makes a great one.

I think down sizing the bait is the best idea for newcomers wanting to try it out or just get some confidence using it, or even on heavily pressured waters where the bass have seen most every bladed jig on the market wiz past there face to the point they ignor them , such is the case where I live here in CA fishing the delta . I use a z-man mini chatter for BFS no skirt and a roboworm shad , and catch fish in an area I passed through with a normal or common sized bladded jig. With that said, I personally pick a spinnerbait over a bladed jig only for the above statement. The fish have seen them all and see them all day long. At least out here in the Californian Delta.

I’ve got a question, would definitely enjoy your input. I love the chatterbait, agree with all points made. I did fish it on my jig setup on 20lbs fluoro invizx but I fish a jig a lot also. To avoid swapping out constantly I put it on a backup rod. It’s got 15 lbs copolymer, I noticed my hookup ratio increased. Prefer it over straight mono so I was sold on this but copolymer frays super easy. I retie after 1-2 fish so I’m back to square one. Any line suggestions for copolymer that’s more fray resistant? I’m currently using Yo-Zuri Hybrid. If it brushes up against a stick, it over. Chatters cost too much to break off constantly. Did I miss the copolymer shootout?

Personally I like a graphite rod as long as it’s got a more moderate action . 7’3” mh fast but a more parabolic bend seems to work well . A small curly tail grub on a minimax works really well for a trailer too

Lake Erie has been very good to me with the chatterbait. It has helped me understand a little more.

I've been trying to fish chatterbaits because of your channel! But one thing I'm unclear about is, what are you supposed to feel when you're fishing a chatterbait correctly? I cast mine out there and let it sink, then lift the rod at a speed such that I can feel the chatterbait vibrating in the water. This feels to me like I'm going too fast, and when I see guys fishing chatterbaits on RUclips, you guys seem to be retrieving much slower than I am, which makes me think maybe it's not necessary to feel the chatterbait vibrating in the water, that it can feel like nothing and be working perfectly fine. I hope I explained my question clearly haha! I've been dying for an answer to this question but no one covers this. Thanks, Tyler! Love both your channels!
