I'm 17 years old, passed my driving test 2 months ago and I own a 1996 Toyota Starlet 1.3L non turbo Life 3 Door Manual with power steering but no Air Conditioning. The car drives very well; feels very zippy, gears feel nice to change, 89000km on the clock only, and it's cheap to run and maintain & great on fuel. In the past 14 months I've had it I have never had 1 single problem occur. It's a great little first car and I have done no mods to it yet but considering putting an exhaust kit on it so I can hear the sound of the engine and the gears better :)
Even stock these cars are mint for first cars. Don't let the looks put you down, they'll still wreck any modern day "limited edition Corsa" that everyone goes for.
Rigger my mate kept saying how his 1.1 colt would destroy a N/A starlet 😂 I have a starlet now and apparently he can’t race because his black box 😂 excuses
Haha, yeah my mate has a 1.2 2011 corsa and I used to walk all over him with my starlet. Fucking loved it, really wish I kept it as a project car and did it up rather than selling it!
haters on here obviously haven't driven a N/A Starlet. If they have driven one they'd be in love with em' because they are just a giggle to drive, zippy and fun.
I own both a p8 starlet and a mk4 escort I prefer my escort Starlets are just beater to daily and slam doors into walls with They're so ugly and uncomfortable when ur above 1.80m tall
I picked up a 98 starlet non-turbo (4EFE) for $700 in australia with 212,000 kms (131,000 miles) to learn how to work on cars and I love it. Super easy to work on, super cheap to insure, super fun to drive. I picked up some great shocks and springs from a bloke who totaled his turbo starlet after hitting a kangaroo for $150 and did a big service on it and I am blown away by what it can do. It handles corners nearly as well as my mx5 and is pretty quick if you give it to her. Currently my DD.
I got myself a 1.3 Liter starlet reflet f. I became obsessed with starlets and would always look out for them when driving my own. One day I got distracted by a fellow starlet driver driving next to me and ran into another car totaling it. to be fair it was a really nice starlet that I saw. RIP my starlet... Will be looking to purchase another soon.
My son bought a light metallic blue Starlet as a learner car, he's studying A levels and has a weekend job. The Starlet is a 1999 1.3 with electric windows and everything works as it should. Has a full MOT with no advisories. It's covered 133000 miles. I have to admit I love driving it, when we are out together I don't want to go back home, great little car, many thanks for the video!!
I had a '95 Starlet for a while as a substitute car, and I absolutely loved driving that one. It was bone stock and a bit sluggish in the corners but my god did it shift well and 75hp on less than 800kg means it's quite zippy. Also there was never ever anything wrong with that car, it just needed oil and the occasional spark plug replacement and it would just keep on going forever.
I had one similar to this, turbo 4efte converted with a TD04 setup and stripped out, No AC because racecar, No power steering because racecar, front exit..well because why not and it was very very fun
Wish i had one for my first car. Bought one about 6 months ago and toured france & italy for 3 weeks (3500 miles) including the stelvio pass and note a single problem, not even a puncture. So refreshing to drive an NA car these days too, so responsive & just general fun to drive.
My first car is a N/A starlet. Great little car pretty fast for a 1.3 and fun to drive although on standard suspension it's awful at handling. My insurance is £1150 for a year which isn't bad! Great vid by the way!
picked one up off a young girl who inherited it from her grandfather, heatercore had rusted out... managed to get it for 300 bucks australian. 61000 kilometres on the clock. best gocart I've ever driven
I have one for a year now, just got new rims on it, got them from a scrap car. Did sand them down, did a first layer of grey and after that i did a few layers of black gloss. Then finished them with a high gloss top coat. The car is looking like a proper little hatchback, its like a whole different car. The total expenses that it cost me where around 50 euro’s tires on the rims where still mint condition only one needed reperation. So still very happy but it makes me hungry for more. 🤷🏻♂️
Had one as a first car. great little cars fun and reliable. had the corolla inlet manifold, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with cold air intake. paid £400 for the car and apart from some new tyres, a new set of plugs and oil+filter change didnt spend a penny on it.would highly recommend them as a first car
I bought a starlet really clean looking, for 250 € a few months ago. It has 173.000 kms on it. It is really fun to ride in and modding is incredible fun. I was a little kid in a candy store when i did my exhaust and front bumper lip. It made the car look amazing and sound amazing.
I own a 1993(model before this one) starlet. Also a 1.3l but then a 12v. Did a intake right at the grill for around 20 bucks, a strut brace(€150) lowering springs(€100), big audio system(€300-€400). Parts are not so easy to find (Netherlands), but going to a scrapyard will do wonders. Owning it for now 3 years and MIT cost me a total of €300(mainly a set of tires, and I do have to say I only pay parts), so not so bad for a 30 year old car.
I got a P9 Starlet daily and a mk1 1.8 MX-5 as a weekend warrior. In my opinion, the Starlet is nowhere near the driving fun of the MX5. The Starlet seats are terrible, and the connection between the road and your hands seems to be made of rubber bands.
I've got 97 starlet. First mod i did was removed the rear muffler and put a 2" exhaust tip on. Has a great deep note. Just a few days ago i also added 6" speakers in the parcel tray and it rattles my boot lid. Awesome little car. Its my first i would recommend this car to anyone just getting their liscence.
Made a non-car guy friend buy this car (checked local used market and went with him tu make the purchase) as a cheap/maintanable/small first daily driver, ans its literally turning him into a car-guy. Dude's having a blast crusing (or faster ;) around after long shifts at work to clear his head. Even happened to make a small 2h trip with 5 person and a few bags with it and it was doable. x)
Im 18 and have a starlet, insurance was really cheap. Got the car for free with 70,000 miles. Sprayed it black, tinted windows and a fuck load of stickers later for hp 👍🏻👍🏻 brilliant car !
I do have one and I just put a 14" wheels on and it has a really nice drive I have everything stock really easy to maintain and it does pull really well with his 75hp I still can pass a lot of nice cars and expensive one's but I just bought one because it's really fun to drive and has no electronic limitations
There was one of these in cheddar gorge once beating loads of more powerful cars just because they are so light and handle so nicely, great first car option in my opinion
First car I had was a Peugeot 306 1.9 TD. It was about £1,500 cheaper to insure than a 1.2 Clio. Right now I've a Toyota Corolla with the same engine as this, the parts are cheap enough for these old Toyota's and they're actually quite nice to work on too. So I'd say the Starlet/Corolla's are good starter cars to learn how to fix and work on cars mechanically. I would recommend a Corolla over a Starlet though, because (like I'm doing) I'm sorting the body out to look like the old Corolla WRC Rally Car from 1998. Full Castrol livery boy!
I have the 5 door version of this car running on LPG! It has like 460k (km) and still drives and runs really nice! It needed some maintains when I got it. Lambda sensor, exhaust, rear shocks, spark plugs, alternator, waterpump and the LPG system had a new tune. I did most myself and was not that hard. I'm still very happy with it, it's my first car and it costs me about €50 a month for roadtax and insurance in NL. Running on LPG also makes you happy at the pump! I'm still looking for a corolla inlet but they are hard to find. The junk yard told me all the engines get exported because they just don't stop running! The 5 door look a bit better in my opinion. Especially with the little spoiler. My LPG tank takes up about 2/3 of the boot space which is the only downside. Love how it drives and definitely recommended as a first car, or affordable reliable daily driver.
I actually had one of these for my first car when I was 17 and I'm not going to lie... I god dam LOVED it!! they are great fun little light weight cars, as you say you can chuck them around and have a great time! plus the actual steering feel and engagement in it was amazing, I just very lightly modified mine (because I was 17 and broke so not enough money for proper mods ha) just wheels and tires, new steering wheel, springs and some cosmetics and it was amazing, loved it so much! The reason I went for the Starlet is because you always see Corsa's and Fiesta's on the road, they're so common but not Starlet's they're that little bit rarer and that's why I went for it, all round great first car and I'd highly recommend it to everyone!
my starlet ep 91 got electric windows. It was build in by the previous owner. and I got a electric roof window. Never had any problems with it :) very happy with it!
after some research im deffinatley set on one of these for my second car as an upgrade from my 2003 Suzuki Alto which is actually another surprisingly well performing car for its standard spec
If anyone's wondering, installing a tach to an ep91 is really easy. you can get a signal from one of pins off of the diagnostic port in the engine bay.
I'm Irish 17 with provisional. Have one of these with all the Glanza bits on it in red aswell with rota grid v wheels coming for it and 40 mil lowering springs. It goes like a scawlded cat. Mine has power steering. Great fun. I love it and have it insured and all which is tough to say for it in Ireland. It's going to be very hard to part with eventually !!
this review is spot on, connecting with it soo much thanx..got a few motors in the stable atm, not some spotty 18yo (ko4 s4, a5 sb, 328 compact,) but im living the life of this car in the review.. got 2 of these, its probs my 49th starlet (including ones iv imported) use mine as one of my dailys, had it for 2 years. same colour with no pas, same corolla inlet but im using a larger glanza tb from a 4a-fe corolla 1.6 (fits straight on) decated. its about 100bhp coils,, one bucket, stripped etc.. id never get the money back from it so use it if i want to go for a mega kaining session. just did 1000 miles around the highlands it such a great car to kain on the cheap.. cost me 180 to insure 200 for the car initially these stripped in this spec with no pas are more like 800kilos amazing for late braking.. the thing thats mint about an na 91 they can take a kicking like nothing else. day in day out at the redline... pretty much an asbo motor as i want to drive like a fanny everywhere..maximum attack.. the largest consumables i find are tires.. revcounter is easily sorted with cd or sr clocks which iv got. six speed box from a corolla g6 (200quid) will help the op with making it more enjoyable and will make the cars little performance a lot more accessable.. check out youutube for my other na ep capable of a high 14pass "Starlet Ep80 4efe vs impreza sti"
@@Stella_Bella_boo In Kenya,a 5E-fe costs about 500 USD .You will use the inlet and exhaust manifold and ecu wiring without mods. You will have to use 4E-fe flywheel.
Hey mate! I am buying a Starlet as first car! exactly the same as this one. Do you remember where you bought the exhaust?, because I love that sound a lot! (Live in Netherlands).
Rob Viguurs you could probably get it from the japspeed website and if you can’t get one from there you could always get a custom one made for a reasonable price
these non turbo starlets are amazing to drive so much fun , and ever so reliable , the best small car to get when I was young I had about 3 of these they nock the bollocks of any corsa, fiesta , clio etc , put it this way if these were sold here and marketed properly corsa's and fiesta's and shit like that would have never sold , all round much better engineered little car .
Got a 96 starlet like this one, popt a AliExpress intake on it (makes a very good sound with that!) Subwoofer and some sticker. All that, makes the (for me) best first car you could possibly have! Shifts and turn like a charm! Planning on lowering the car 40mm :)
My firs car was r reg starlet in 2012 1.3 standard nice alloys and fat exhaust it destroyed corsas and all my mates cars honestly gave me a love for toyotas
My 3rd car was a Starlet 3 year's I had it and I couldn't kill best car I've every had and after that I had many more Starlets after that till I bought a G-touring Corolla
i used to have a 98 starlet SR in focus St orange with a black roof and bonnet following the lines down the bumper. i loved that wee car, so much fun to drive, if you're thinking about getting one, just do it, mods are cheap, cheap to run and insure easy to work on as well and they are pretty much bomb proof. id like to add though, treat it right or it wont last, treated mine like a dick, drove it running on 2 cylinders and blew a hole in the block 😁
@@MultiPureskill It was a great car. Had to let her go however, i replaced it with a Mazda 323P. The Starlet never skipped a beat, the 4EFE engine is bulletproof.
@@thatcarguy4771 Indeed it is! I bought mine when i was 17! Had to wait about half a year before i could even make a drivers licence so i could drive! I love her every day! That car is actually really rare here (Czechia) i've seen only about 4 and i've driven about 10k with that beast all round the Czechia! :D Only thing that i would is 6Q transmission! Otherwise its amazing car! And to be honest, its 95% same as driving a Mazda 6! and damn those things can be fast! How is your mazda? Is 323P a good choice? Would you recommend it? I am thinking of buying another car, as i know i would regret selling my Starlet! (Sorry for such a long reply!)
@@MultiPureskill Oh it's a great car. The 1.5L Z5 engine is such a great runner, and i have the 'lean burn' model which is tuned for the high grade octane fuel, and getting on average, 38MPG. A bit down on power, i admit but since it has fully independent suspension, it handles wonderfully
Got a N reg (1996) in the light blue - green. Paid £1100 no black box and I’m 17!!!! Admiral said there car was too old to have one. Rubbish but not complaining at all 😁 Gonna put it a hornet back box, 40mm lowering springs and tint the windows and a air filter. Sorted
I love my na starlet, reliable, mods are pretty cheap but after driving the far for a year you really do want that extra bit of power from a glanza, but a lot of people have started converting the na to turbo :)
The naturally aspirated version is a 1.3 and the turbo (glanza) is a 4efte. And GT's arent that common but I think they are cheaper than glanza's but more than naturally aspirated starlets
My mates got one at the gar age I work at, it's sooooo good, he has a turbo, it looks good, sounds good, so much it's what I'm going to get as a first car just without turbo, he's got spare parts but the parts are so cheap to find, it's just finding a good one that is the right colour, he's even got a spare bumper for me 😂 but it is soon good, acceleration is crazy
do more like this cheap quick cars that are cheap to insure in the UK I want something like this but a little smarter looks a lil too much like a micra to me
Thanks for uploading this Jamie! I've been looking around you tube trying to find a video like this on a 1999 starlet but I just couldn't find any. Awesome video as always :) I wanna get one of these as my first car There unreal
my cuz passed his test not too long ago and has a Fiat Seicento. Brought it for 500 quid and my god is that thing nippy so light and so much fun at 80 odd haha
Mine has the Corolla intake non-turbo, no airco, no powersteering, stock exhaust, big K&N air filter and has been on the dyno: 86.5hP en 117.6Nm torque.
This week the same BMC CDA filter arrived here, hope to dyno it again to compare. Then a 4-2-1 2.5 custom exhaust :-) Very curious how they improve performance. Numbers everywhere are around +10hp en +10-14Nm Torque for the BMC filter....
wanted one of these when I was 18, £4500 a year Tpf&t. Cheers. insurance companies do hate me though. this one's mega cool, got quite a bit done to it by looks of it. owner must have spent a bit unless hes done most of it himself.
i have a starlet a lot like this one. its far from being a first car, but personally i would rather drive this than most things. plenty of smiles and does'nt drink much so you can be out there smiling as much as you like. quality little thrasher!!!!! but yea move those harnesses cos thats not going to be nice on the spine
Have two of these, one glanza rep as my first car and a standard red ep91. Was involved in an accident in the rep earlier this year but doesn't take away from the fact that these are great all round cars although not sure about the insurance being overly cheap. In my opinion the only mod I think is really worth doing is to turbo them then it gets complicated on the n/a 4efe lol, nice video anyhow
Good video dude I met misses through selling a ep91 she still owns it and i have had 3 since then! £400 for a years insurance 74bhp standard you can have some good fun in these cars i like dropping through the gears as a car goes to over take and putting the pedal down ;) lol i do make it difficult haha standard or modifiedthey are great fun!

If anyone's wondering, installing a tach to an ep91 is really easy. you can get a signal from one of pins off of the diagnostic port in the engine bay.
ever do it?
I'm Irish 17 with provisional. Have one of these with all the Glanza bits on it in red aswell with rota grid v wheels coming for it and 40 mil lowering springs. It goes like a scawlded cat. Mine has power steering. Great fun. I love it and have it insured and all which is tough to say for it in Ireland. It's going to be very hard to part with eventually !!
17, and got a '04 R50 MINI (1.6), fully comprehensive - £1069.99 for a full year; and only with my dad as a secondary driver!
Got myself a toyota starlet last year and bloody love it! Next year I’m going to start modding it 😎
I've got a Ep97 starlet since 2008, 10 years..I can't part with it. Love the car.
Keep your power steering. Believe me, they're much better with it.
this review is spot on, connecting with it soo much
thanx..got a few motors in the stable atm, not some spotty 18yo (ko4 s4, a5 sb, 328 compact,) but im living the life of this car in the review..
got 2 of these, its probs my 49th starlet (including ones iv imported)
use mine as one of my dailys, had it for 2 years.
same colour
with no pas,
same corolla inlet but im using a larger glanza tb from a 4a-fe corolla 1.6 (fits straight on)
decated. its about 100bhp
coils,, one bucket, stripped etc.. id never get the money back from it so use it if i want to go for a mega kaining session. just did 1000 miles around the highlands it such a great car to kain on the cheap..
cost me 180 to insure
200 for the car initially
these stripped in this spec with no pas are more like 800kilos
amazing for late braking..
the thing thats mint about an na 91 they can take a kicking like nothing else. day in day out at the redline... pretty much an asbo motor as i want to drive like a fanny everywhere..maximum attack.. the largest consumables i find are tires..
revcounter is easily sorted with cd or sr clocks which iv got.
six speed box from a corolla g6 (200quid) will help the op with making it more enjoyable and will make the cars little performance a lot more accessable..
check out youutube for my other na ep capable of a high 14pass
"Starlet Ep80 4efe vs impreza sti"
I had one of these... and 6 years on, I never sold it. I just have it as a spare because its so fucking reliable.
I have a 5door. I modified by putting in a 1500cc,5e-fe engine. 😎
How much did you buy the 1.5 for?
Thinking of doing it to my 1.3 SR
@@Stella_Bella_boo In Kenya,a 5E-fe costs about 500 USD .You will use the inlet and exhaust manifold and ecu wiring without mods. You will have to use 4E-fe flywheel.
@@samuelmuthui4699 thanks 👍
@@Stella_Bella_boo welcome 🤗
Comical, honest and real. Please do reviews like this again
These EP91s are great endless fun m8
these non turbo starlets are amazing to drive so much fun , and ever so reliable , the best small car to get when I was young I had about 3 of these they nock the bollocks of any corsa, fiesta , clio etc , put it this way if these were sold here and marketed properly corsa's and fiesta's and shit like that would have never sold , all round much better engineered little car .
Bought one for £80🚘 ..over 6 years ago .Been my daily drive ever since .. 😊 same colour and model as yours
My 3rd car was a Starlet 3 year's I had it and I couldn't kill best car I've every had and after that I had many more Starlets after that till I bought a G-touring Corolla
i used to have a 98 starlet SR in focus St orange with a black roof and bonnet following the lines down the bumper. i loved that wee car, so much fun to drive, if you're thinking about getting one, just do it, mods are cheap, cheap to run and insure easy to work on as well and they are pretty much bomb proof. id like to add though, treat it right or it wont last, treated mine like a dick, drove it running on 2 cylinders and blew a hole in the block 😁
i just picked one up as my first car :)
lowiie what did it cost to insure
mines 600 a year new driver first car
@@SarahDidds what company?
I'm picking up a 1.3 Starlet this week, really excited as it's actually my first car!
That Car Guy Ayye bro Congrats :DD
How's your starlet?
Christopher Smart is the 1.3 a 4EFE? Also isn't it cheaper to get a Starlet GT?
The naturally aspirated version is a 1.3 and the turbo (glanza) is a 4efte. And GT's arent that common but I think they are cheaper than glanza's but more than naturally aspirated starlets
Problem i find with ones i have owned is over time the radiator needs to be replaced first as they seem to wear out easily
The Yaris T-Sport that you reviewed before would be a great first car too! Very cheap to insure for a car of that performance
How tall are you, I want to swap or mod my seats, bout your build but 6’3 in height.
I had a 1.3 n a starlet stripped it out and it was fun wasn't fast but you could use all the power and it handled on rails lol
do more like this cheap quick cars that are cheap to insure in the UK I want something like this but a little smarter looks a lil too much like a micra to me
I’ve got one as my first car and it’s an amazing car to drive plus cheap to insure
Thanks for uploading this Jamie! I've been looking around you tube trying to find a video like this on a 1999 starlet but I just couldn't find any. Awesome video as always :) I wanna get one of these as my first car There unreal
i got a corsa 2007. i wanna buy one of these just for fun n do it up
I think they best in black that way they wont go pink
+DJ GamesHD haha
Picked mine up for £200 with 65k miles, Corolla inlet mani cost me £20 with the throttle body, wheels £200, springs £95, advanced ignition timing ;)
Got a 1990 n/a 1.3L stealer s, no problems in a drag with 2L turbo golf
my cuz passed his test not too long ago and has a Fiat Seicento. Brought it for 500 quid and my god is that thing nippy so light and so much fun at 80 odd haha
mate i think im in love...i have a 96'es starlet similar with yours in greece !!! beautifull cars !!!
Fuel economy is bar none, easy to maintain, my kind of car
Mine has the Corolla intake non-turbo, no airco, no powersteering, stock exhaust, big K&N air filter and has been on the dyno: 86.5hP en 117.6Nm torque.
This week the same BMC CDA filter arrived here, hope to dyno it again to compare. Then a 4-2-1 2.5 custom exhaust :-) Very curious how they improve performance. Numbers everywhere are around +10hp en +10-14Nm Torque for the BMC filter....
I’m here a year after this video with a year until I can drive and I honestly can’t wait to buy one and just muck about and have a class time aha
wish I'd got something as cool as this for a first car! ended up with a 1l seat arosa at 17 and paid 3100 for.my first year of insurance!
wanted one of these when I was 18, £4500 a year Tpf&t. Cheers. insurance companies do hate me though. this one's mega cool, got quite a bit done to it by looks of it. owner must have spent a bit unless hes done most of it himself.
Very great small car
I just got a 1.3 rear wheel starlet, and I would love to know more how the owner found all the parts
Your here saying great first car, I'm here thinking of selling my FN2 to buy one of these 😄
How do I tune mine has the same engine 4EFE NON TUBRO
Where do you buy that stuff :D
i have a starlet a lot like this one. its far from being a first car, but personally i would rather drive this than most things. plenty of smiles and does'nt drink much so you can be out there smiling as much as you like. quality little thrasher!!!!!
but yea move those harnesses cos thats not going to be nice on the spine
You just fill it rocket fuel and you have more HP, dont worry about the engine, never breaks.
If you get into an accident with those seatbelts I can guarantee you’ll damage your spin with the way they are set up
my first car is 1.3 1996 starlet and its the best
the best car i ever owned
In Puerto Rico they put 13b rotaries in Starlets and make 1000hp
Have two of these, one glanza rep as my first car and a standard red ep91. Was involved in an accident in the rep earlier this year but doesn't take away from the fact that these are great all round cars although not sure about the insurance being overly cheap. In my opinion the only mod I think is really worth doing is to turbo them then it gets complicated on the n/a 4efe lol, nice video anyhow
I have the toyota glanza v turbo 1.8 and love these cars and cheep to find parts
Why would you put harnesses in a 1.3?
Love it I’ve had quite a collection off them last one that i have is a Glanza
The starlet has such a high car insurance? With no mods or anything? How is it cheap?
A lot of it depends on location, I'm paying £1400 for a 1.2 corsa D a rip off really :(
calum macdonald that's actually really cheap for a Corsa as a new driver, my mate is paying £2500 😮
I only pay £1100 for mine at 17 in a city
im from melborune best car ive owned so so cheap for insurance and modsover my silvias
Good video dude
I met misses through selling a ep91 she still owns it and i have had 3 since then! £400 for a years insurance 74bhp standard you can have some good fun in these cars i like dropping through the gears as a car goes to over take and putting the pedal down ;) lol i do make it difficult haha standard or modifiedthey are great fun!
My gfs grandparents have an automatic one that barely gets used
But is like a little go kart compared 5o what im used to
