    It's nice to see that the more things change the more they stay the same. You are essentially keeping a tradition alive whereby drummers 'kit bash' their hi-hats by mixing and matching two sets from either different lines within the same company or two separate companies. This is how the modern "fusion" lines came to be - back in the 60s and 70s specifically Zildjian players would use heavier K style bottoms with thinner A types. Eventually most companies began doing the same thing and naming them fusion, mixed hats, etc. Once again proving that e-drummers or analog, we are all pretty much hardwired the same. :)

    I've just done it with Roland TD-20 & VH-11 + Roland CY-14C + dead Yamaha PCY-13 and it was hard.....no.....extremely hard - but I did it in the end. I hate the 12" H/H, especially when I play 15" on a real kit. No Roland parts were modified or taken apart in the process so I may just BLOG it one day if other e-drummers are bothered about wanting to play 14" H/H. I hated the 12" diameter from day 1 so this has been a major breakthrough for me. Thanks to Justin for the inspiration to try it.

    I have used the vh11 top with the alesis prox bottom and controller. This acheived very good results with a alesis dm10 and also with atv ad5. It gave the most consistent and wide open to close that I have experienced in a edrum hihat. Even better than the vh11. Uaing the roland top significantly reduces the volume issue of the pro x and also gives 2 zones.

    I did something like this with my old e-kit, which I sorely regret selling now :( but it was about as DIY as you can get. My hi-hat was the Yamaha RHH135 so it went on a real stand but it was only one piece. The hi hat controller is inside the cymbal pad, which I think is a great design and only Yamaha does it that way. I took 3 or 4 old vinyl records and clamped them together with a rubber rim that normally goes on metal drum hoops. It worked really well and didn't look too bad either. It was nice that the vinyl records already had a perfectly centered hole punched into them.

    Nice experiment! I've just in recent months started watching your videos. You often cover things not covered elsewhere which I dig! I just recently bought a TD-11 kit. Unfortunately 2 weeks later the TD-17 line was introduced... ugh! I feel burned lol.

      Meccarox I possibly could have but I had it shipped and there were a ton of pieces. Plus good luck getting it all to fit back in the boxes the way it came lol

    You can replace the strike controller with a goedrum controller and still use the lower cymbal with minor modification. And you can use the strike lower cymbal with the VH10 and 11 with great success with some easily sourced DIY parts. In fact the lower strike cymbal is probably the best option to make a 2 piece if you can find one. And there should be plenty with all the alesis hats that ended up being scrapped.

    Justin, it would be a good idea to compare the VH-10 with the GoEdrum controller, since they are both lower quality solutions, is important to know if the issues with the GoEdrum controller, like the flimsiness, low weight, tapering on the lower side and overall balance, are not an issue with the VH-10.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 лет назад

      I've played the VH10 a bunch, and it's higher quality than the Goedrum controller, it's made of better parts

    • @MartinOcando
      @MartinOcando 6 лет назад +1

      I know, it should be. But what I mean is that if I already have a good Roland cymbal that I use for the hi-hat, a CY-12R/C, am I going to feel a huge difference by upgrading to the VH-10? I'm pretty happy with the Goedrum, as a matter of fact. Triggering is awesome, and super accurate, so do you think the upgrade is justifiable?

    Great video Justin! I have a question, so I've had my Alesis Nitro Kit for 7 months and I want to know if the hi-hat will work on a acoustic hi-hat stand would it work with the nitro kit module?

    Hey Justin. I'd be interested to know what you think of the Yamaha RHH-135 hihat. I bought one recently and I like it. I'm not sure how it works because the cymbal doesn't make physical contact with the base plate. I suspect it's got a magnet in it. In terms of physical wear and tear that has to be great , right ?

  • @TheBonsaiRonin
    @TheBonsaiRonin 6 лет назад

    Good idea.. Does the vh11 feel like there's a bottom cymbal when u step on the pedal? That's the reason I havnt swapped my strike out for one. Idk how it feels

  • @danmayo9182
    @danmayo9182 5 лет назад

    Hey Justin, thanks for posting this -- really interesting. A question I've been having lately: is that goedrum controller a viable replacement for the VH11 controller? From what I see here, the answer seems like yes. The reason I ask: those controllers go bad periodically, and I would be interested to know whether the goedrum (at half the price) would be just as good vs. trying to get that part from Roland.
    So my question to you: would it be possible for you to decouple the goedrum controller from that bottom piece and do a video comparing just the two controllers, their performance, calibration diffs, any issues with the VH11 clutch, etc? Bonus points if you were willing to take apart each one and show the internals :) (I've taken apart my VH11 controller -- no big deal -- but can't speak to the goedrum one)
    What do you say?

    The spacer needs to be stronger. Cut down the shaft of a spare module mount if you have one, the diameter is perfect.

  • @Mudge07
    @Mudge07 6 лет назад

    Necessity is the Mother of invention... out of the box thinking at least lets you recycle some, often complex, hardware. My kids’ old, outgrown Guitar Hero drumkit has piezo cymbals with a standard phono connector. So the spare TD11KV cymbal socket now has a readymade robust input source used as a ‘China’.
