Still breathtaking 8 years later. You've changed our lives. You've inspired creativity. and you've really made the world a much better place. Thank you so much.
Over these years, this vedio has been more than just a game engine trailer, but an encourage to my life. I love the music, the scene where the kite finally meets its fellows flying around, and the saying "if you love something, set if free". Many thanks to Epic and whoever made this vedio.
You don't know much about UE4. The Elemental demo which they showed some time ago now is available for download and you are not limited to the animation, you can go free cam mode, you can even mess around with the scene and assets. Some dude turned it into a Unreal Tournament map.
The distance view of this demo is one of the best I've seen, no game so far has such a distance view, and this was released a decade ago. I never thought how much distance view impacts the game experience, it feels like real life.
I find it kind of ironic how many people point out the absurdity of those videos showing ripped cartoonish Nintendo models juxtaposed against hyperrealistic grass and deer, yet the original protagonist designed for the environment of this demo has always had some cartoonish qualities to his design as well (I might even make the argument that it looks like a proto-Fortnite artstyle where they leaned harder towards realism than plastic)
i can't believe this demo actually ran fine on my computer. this demo shows that computer generated scenes can be made as realistic as you want these days. (and this is an older demo, imagine what an RTX 3090TI could do.)
Looks pretty amazing! The only downer for me is the boy. His textures and bumps are far behind what's possible and he wierdly stands out from the high quality environment. Check 1:30 for example.
Stock brot That's going a little far. They've definitely done some awesome shit for UC4. By no means does it look like shit. In fact, there's some things they can do that UE4 can't, like anisotropic shading, which really would have helped for this kid's hair.
My g/f and her dog used to live with me, then I broke it off and now we take turns keeping the dog...this video made me think about the dog when they said if you love something set it free. I don't want to set him free though, I love that dog. Sorry for the public meltdown internet.
Well, if the dog were a person then setting it free would mean letting it choose. But since a dog cannot make decisions then it's up to you to set it free by choosing whatever makes it happier.
GuyThatMakesSense The dog is definitely happier with me, he makes it quite obvious, but the dog was originally hers before she moved in...she has just never taken great care of him (part of the reason I broke it off).
You set it free. If your dog wants to be with you, it will. Otherwise, just enjoy your dog being free and enjoying its outdoor life, though it is not as safe as your home.
Unreal isn't really saying they're the best free option, or that they're the best at all. No engine is the best- at least, not alone. What makes a good program is how well it can work with others. Unreal is quite compatible with other programs, such as Maya and Unity. It can do things that Maya and Unity can, but it can also bring its own unique talents to the table, just as Maya and Unity each have their own special abilities.
I'm fairly certain that the creators of the most commercially successful game engine on the planet aren't worried that there are people who don't use it.
Plot twist: Those kites are actually sentient aliens from another world, they now hunger for human hands and spread out across the planet devouring the hands of all the people they can find, this child is now infamous for allowing the leader of the kites to join with his army and take the world...yeah I need some sleep.
That's probably the work of 3-4 guys during 2-3 weeks or so. Obviously, we're talking about prepared people here. You wouldn't be able to do this on your own anyways.
Keytotruth 2-3 weeks? I'd say 2 months minimum. The amount of animation data, plus all these hand made assets (prob from Maya) takes a long time. Maybe putting all the assets in the engine plus the tinkering with the visuals will take 2-3 weeks.
Apart from the actual kid character (who is way too cartoony for every single other 3D object in the video), this video is absolutely insane. Wow. Real-time or pre-rendered, I have never seen any environments this good besides 3D scanned ones. I even think I actually prefer this over them because of the fantasy feel. Cryengine has nothing on this.

awesome message, awsome render quality. GREAT JOB!
I laugh at some of these people, claiming that it's impossible to do something like in just Unreal Engine 4 alone. Well, I can't speak for the team of creators that made this, but I am pretty sure that this is showing UE4 at its best, and not just a general piece of content the user can create when they want. This is meant to show how UE4 is almost limitless in what can be done with it. If you want to do something like this, then sure, you can do it yourself, if you know how to do everything and have months to set aside in dedication to it. However, this is something a team of 4 or 5 experts in different fields can do in a month or two, by dividing up the various jobs and tasks, and working together, using their different ideas and pools of knowledge to make something truly wonderful. Unreal Engine 4- It's not about what you can't do. It's about what you can, and how far you are willing to push yourself.
Well, if people say "you can't make all this only using UE4" than 1. They have no idea about game development. and 2. The only other thing you need to create this is Blender and Photoshop...
Спасибо Вам дяди из Epic Games :) Вы всегда были на несколько шагов впереди всех движков и сегодня Вы как всегда утерли нос всем конкурентам, этот движок не победить.
Someone thinks that they are Pixar. ;p This is gorgeous, though I feel compelled to nitpick about the screen-space reflection artifacting at the edge of the screen on the lake when the camera pans across it. That was the only moment when I was reminded that this was in realtime.
I would suggest a vision test. The quality of the lighting (GI), foilage and the assets (8k photogrammetry) used in UE5 are on a different stratosphere. Some might suggest horizon FW surpassed it. This might be equal to KENA: Bridge of spirits which will also run on a PS4.
If we are to believe that the first Titan X was given to Tim Sweeney at GDC. Then this demos render was likely done on a GPU before that. Which basically means anything Titan Z or below.. :P
Unreal might not be the best engine according to some people around here, but I always used to, and still think unreal engine is the best and the most realistic, I Stan unreal engine.
Still breathtaking 8 years later. You've changed our lives. You've inspired creativity. and you've really made the world a much better place. Thank you so much.
in 10 years, you will remember this one..."if you love something, set if free"

This is better than 99% of trailers... and this was just to tell people Unreal Is Free? Unreal Crew, your awesome!
@@ethanwasme4307 yes u too
Release this demo with free camera movement. It would be more interactive than The Order 1886.
Heikki360ES they will release it for free to use with unreal engine 4. You can do everything with it, also doing free camera movement ^^
You don't know much about UE4.

Olek It was a joke, ffs.
Hola Heikki, puto amo.

There are not much videos that makes me almost cry but this is one of them. Really nice music, animation and context compilation.
After that first fall in the river I'd have been like "Ah fuck it, dumbass kite."
7 years later and now we have Unrean Engien 5 also FREE! Love you guys!
Still a better love story than fifty shades of grey...
evilsamar kicking a can in the street is a better love story than 50sog
I wouldn't know hehe
So 50SoG is the new Twilight?! Good that one got old...
Lemmy The Carpenter Can we go back to Twilight now?

well there you have it folks ..Real time rendering of cinematic quality graphics ...unbelievable !
The chills I get from this. Remember When it first came out and I went nuts.
Of course, the kites very well couldn't let him leave knowing the secret lair of their cave after that....
i can't believe this demo actually ran fine on my computer.

Didn't see that last line coming! Well done.
still have chills when showing Free..Ue4
Pulled a bit of heart strings watching this. Powerful.
This is the Definition of beautiful!
This is the prettiest demo in the world.
and here i am strugling to learn how to attach items to each another ;(
last 5 years musta been rough eh
Same

Gorgeous and very well done. Hard to believe we're at a point where this can be done in realtime now.
You guys have been blowing my mind for the past 24 hours!
Looks pretty amazing! The only downer for me is the boy. His textures and bumps are far behind what's possible and he wierdly stands out from the high quality environment. Check 1:30 for example.
Best realtime graphics I've ever seen. And wow if this was really done on a single Titan X...
"If you set something free and if it comes back then it's yours." - Bubbles
this really touched
thanks Unreal for the support
I was literally thinking of that quote the entire video. well done
Wow! Incredible graphics. I think movies (for the public) need to be made with this software
Damn, this looks almost as good as Uncharted 4. Impressive.
JamanWerSonst almost? better..
Good one!
Don't even..
Bhahaha, Uncharted 4 looks like shit.
Stock brot That's going a little far. They've definitely done some awesome shit for UC4. By no means does it look like shit.
In fact, there's some things they can do that UE4 can't, like anisotropic shading, which really would have helped for this kid's hair.
who else thought this was going to be like the dead island teaser and all fucked up. with the kid all half mauled to death by a bear
I liked this ending, but I think that ending would have been a little better
+ZaNo Death no. .. ... no...
no no no.
just uhh... no..
+ZaNo Death no
9 years ago I bought my first GPU TItan x because of this.Thank You Tim!
The actual quote goes
"If you love something,
Set it free
If it comes back,
It is yours
If it doesnt,
It never was"
Quite beautiful, no? :>
This was when the dark world clouds cleared and the world was washed with the light of the Unreal Engine.
It started from a humble engine called Unreal engine... Which over the years gained popularity and eventually, became this masterpiece.
If only I could find a place as pretty as this and raise a family.
:\
best app ever
It's like the saying when you love someone you let him/her go. The boy loved the kite but he realised the kite needed to be with the other kites.
Thank you, Unreal Engine.❤️❤️❤️
Is this real life? This looks so realistic!
No, it's FANTA-SEA ;)
Alcino Major Now i want some fanta thx..

The true argument: "If you see that some developers are using other graphic engines instead of ours...set it free. UE4 Real".
vivalaliberty I think you missed the point. UE4 is very good, AND FREE.
Mythricia On top of that I believe they mentioned that they only got to 13 when GDC was getting closer.
Unity devs love their engine too!
Unreal isn't really saying they're the best free option, or that they're the best at all. No engine is the best- at least, not alone. What makes a good program is how well it can work with others. fantastic work! looks EPIC!
Amazing work. That animation was on the levels of Pixar
Its so real that looks like a movie.
Finally, I can check the 'make-a-video-game' on my bucket list.
Plot twist: Those kites are actually sentient aliens from another world, they now hunger for human hands and spread out across the planet devouring the hands of all the people they can find, this child is now infamous for allowing the leader of the kites to join with his army and take the world...yeah I need some sleep.
That... Was.... Beautiful...
The Unreal engine is amazing, obviously, but we need better content creation tools. You need an army to make something that looks like this.
That's what Blender/Maya, ZBrush and other stuff is for.
You also wouldn't be able to create something like this without a team anyway.
army? not atall
That's probably the work of 3-4 guys during 2-3 weeks or so. Obviously, we're talking about prepared people here. You wouldn't be able to do this on your own anyways.

Keytotruth Tech demos take a long ass time to put together.
That was...BEAUTIFUL :')

Spectacular!
I loved my youth and decided to set it free. Now I am old and wrinkled, which I can't get rid of.
Holy crap, this card is going to be insane!
I can't wait to see more!
Very nice, didn't expect trailer emotional like this.
and thus the cruel reign of kites began..
wow, amazing this is truly beautiful :')
Finally! Free! Thank you!
My dream is to see the Final Fantasy 7 built with this graphics engine
oh my god that would be incredible
Our dream*
As much as I love UE4, Square Enix has an equally robust engine that can keep up with it just fine.
Makkon This is true, no doubt. They do use the Unreal Engine as well, but yeah, their in-house engine is pretty nice.
Ed Gameplays dreams come true sometimes
Reminds me of a Sting song - "If you love someone - set them free"
Epic games made an ultimate Epic step!
This is so beautiful!!! its heart moving~~
Made in 2015 and this is so much better than the new PS5 unreal demo in 2020 :)
@@sagii86 is just me...but I like the “A boy and His Kite” unreal demo from 2015 better….
Such an amazing story and simplicity
fuckin kites can maneuver itself, supernatural sht happenin right here. sam get the fucking holy water
This is awesome! I'm so excited to start using Unreal Engine to make animation to go with my music. :)
Great work everyone. Looks beautiful!
the quote at the end makes no sense like i love my pc im not going to set it free FFS
it's talking about how they are making the Unreal 4 Engine free,
I loled so hard omg xD
lmao
Tortóon De Magge What do you think floppy dick drives are for?
The answer is, you do not love your PC. The PC is an utterly replaceable object, and any attachment to it is purely superficial.
Greate video! And i love it that you made it free!!!
Wow. Just watching this from a different perspective, put tears to my eyes..

Let's THANK RUclips for this Best FULLHD Quality!
Amazing. Also thank you for releasing UE4 for free.
Sehr schön gemacht, nette Botschaft!!!
Some amazing stuff, bring on the ue4 powered games!
totally loved this, so I will tweet it and set it free :)
just awesome!!
plot twist the other kites are the other game enignes :P
Beautiful video!
they have done very well, really
U guys are awesome :) and thats the best cinematic to improve

one word, EPIC!
1:40 is that a hommage to How to Train your Dragon 2?
because it looks really similar to the cave scene where the dragons fly in circles
Ok, this was amazing!
Three words: Monster House vibes
man this is some cool!!!
It's like the first Shrek! Well, maybe still not 100% but very close to it!!!
Beautiful 😍
If you love someone, let them go.
If you don't love someone, let them go.
Just let everybody go.
superb. Great work Epic!
Noticable pop-ins here and there but otherwise looks really great
