Kalapawai Swing (Take 3)

- We stay with friends in one of the sweetest places possible, just down the street from the Kalapawai Market, where Kailua Road finally stops changing names and ends, where Kalaheo Ave picks up the slack and changes names to Lihiwai Road for the trip past Kailua Beach Park and on into Lanikai. It's a busy little junction with the special added traffic of folks towing kayaks from the nearby rental outlet on their way to the beach.
At the point where all these roads converge and take new names is a little triangle park across the street from the Kalapawai Market, and back in 2012 I composed a little slack key instrumental I called "Kalapawai Swing" and shot the video in that triangle park: • Kalapawai Swing - Slac...
Of course things change and a couple of years back the triangle junction was updated into a roundabout style, with an update to the park and a real improvement to the traffic flow. On our 2022 trip our buddy Jim Banghart brought his new camera drone along and that seemed like a fun feature to add to a new take of "Kalapawai Swing" highlighting the new version of the triangle park: • Kalapawai Swing (Take 2)
Little did we know that the roundabout project was actually just a temporary experiment and once it was proven to improve traffic flow a whole new update was in the works. It seems that the underground infrastructure needed repair and there were further plans to enhance the triangle park, so once again the Kalapawai neighborhood became the scene of a big construction project. So on this 2023 visit we found ourselves seeing our little corner in a new light, with detours and heavy equipment impacting the usual heavy traffic. Naturally this was another opportunity to shoot a video of "Kalapawai Swing" but there was no access to the triangle park, so I shot the song on the screened lanai at our friend's cottage and edited in the shots of the current state of the neighborhood. So here's "Kalapawai Swing (Take 3)."
I played the song on the good old Martin OM-18V in taropatch open G (D G D G B D from low pitch to high). I used the LR Baggs Lyric pickup and direct input to the Zoom F6 recorder. I shot the video on a Panasonic Lumix GH4 and edited the video together in Edius 9.
Awesome, thanks Fran!
You're too kind, Charlotte, but I never turn down a compliment (grin).

Always soooooooo coooool😎
Hey, Ben, thank you. It's fun to celebrate this lovely little corner of the world.
Fran
Ah wei...just what I needed at just the right time. Thx
Walter, you certainly are supportive in your comments so I'm happy to think the music supports you. Thanks.
Fran
Always a pleasure to listen. Hope you and yours are well.
Thank you for spending time here, we're all doing just fine, I hope the same is true for you.
Fran
EXCELLENT Music Hawaiian.
Thanks, good to hear from you.

All three videos are great, gifts of mele and aloha. The construction in this one is interesting--seems like just part of the scenery--paradise at work. The Martin OM-18V is so mellow. Mahalo nui!
The pace of the construction might be a bit relaxed, but it definitely doesn't sound like paradise (grin) or feel like it when the traffic backs up for a quarter mile. Still, I'd rather be here during construction than most places without it.
I'm a big fan of these mahogany bodied Martin OMs and feel very fortunate to have one for my Hawai`i guitar.
Fran
Like Phil(below) took a trip back thru your videos. Of course love all of these. Enjoy seeing different settings. You keep me homesick for Hawaii and I've only visited a few times !! Keep it up, Please !! Be Well
I sure know that homesick feeling, we start to get it even before we leave. Driving from Kailua to Kane`ohe puts the most gorgeous part of the Ko`olau range in front of us and we're captured by the beauty every time.

A great piece of music Fran. In fact all three sound super. Your Martin guitar is this one really sounds sublime. Interesting to see the area develop. Thanks again - love the music 👍👍👍
Hi, Brian, interesting that the sound is sweeter in this one, in the others I was more concerned with the visuals so perhaps I let the audio side slip a bit. I couldn't record in the middle of the construction so I played the song on the lanai where we are staying, much more relaxed.
Fran
@@franguidry I’m sure the construction created quite a noise. Guitar sounded great. 👍
Thank you for sharing this great video. Wishing you happiness and success❤❤
As always, thanks for your generous comment. I feel very lucky to have visitors like yourself coming to the channel.
Fran
I've just watched all three videos Fran. As always its interesting to see what its like where you live. Lovely music as usual 😊
Thanks Phil, but I'm afraid this is not where I live. I'm actually full time in Northern California but we do spend a couple of months in Hawai`i most years and our regular spot in Hawai`i is the beautiful windward side of O`ahu.
Fran
Thanks Fran from the BlueGrass.
Thanks for visiting and commenting again.

Been a few years since I was at Kalapawai Market. Road work still going on! I'm still bummed that I broke my Kalapawai Market coffee mug! Great tune!
The folks living in Lanikai are steaming, and I'm sure the merchants are taking some kind of hit, but it was looking like they were making progress when we left.
Fran
Nice!
Thank you for the comment and thanks for visiting.

Peaceful city and beautiful music. OM18? I feel some mahogany sound with your cozy guitar sound. I like it!
Thanks for visiting and commenting. Yes, OM-18V (simple trim, v-neck, wide bridge spacing, mahogany back and sides, sitka spruce top with 1/4" scalloped bracing). These are a bit rare these days, many people do not care for the wide bridge spacing, but I love it.
Fran
Comfortable melody and sound as always♪
Kalapawai store aria has been under construction, hasn’t it?
Yes indeed, the construction is exactly what I'm trying to capture in this new video. I should probably have mixed in a bit of the sound because that is a big part of the experience along with the detours shifting the traffic patterns around.
Fran
Thank you for giving me your kind comments.
