Salomila - Slack Key Backyard Style

- "Salomila" was one of the first slack key songs I wanted to learn, the lilting melody was so inviting it really helped me put up with the frustration of making my thumb and fingers do their jobs. But that was the relatively simple "taropatch" open G tuning version of the song, a great beginner's piece.
There's another way to play "Salomila" - the way Ledward Kaapana learned from his Uncle Fred Punahoa and his mom's brothers in the Konanui family. I along with many others was captivated by the chiming sound of "Salomila" as recorded on the groundbreaking "Young Hawai`i Plays Old Hawai`i" album by Hui Ohana, the family band made up of Ledward, his twin brother Nedward, and their cousing Dennis Pavao.
On that recording Ledward used a family tuning that we would today call a C Mauna Loa tuning, one with a 5th interval between the top two strings. This tuning has the bottom two strings inverted from the Pahinui family version, so it's spelled G C E G A E from lowest pitch to highest. Notice that this tunings is "slacked" only on one string while the bottom three strings are raised in pitch compared to standard tuning, so it stretches the conventional idea of slack key to the limit. Because this tuning is so tight it is hard on the guitar and on the strings, so Ledward and his family often tuned all the strings one whole step lower, giving a B Flat version of the same relative tuning. I'm playing in good old drop C tuning, spelled C G D G B D from low to high.
Ledward is playing his Martin DCPA4. I'm using an Epiphone Masterbilt EF-500RCCE.
This video was shot at Ledward's home in Kane`ohe, HI, while friends gathered in the garage for a typical Friday night get together. Because those rascals were having so much fun talking story and cracking jokes, we plugged the guitars into the Zoom H6 and recorded direct.
Pat La`a is once again operating one camera, the Lumix GH3 in this case. We're using a GX7 for the static two shot and I pointed the GM1 at the sky for a cutaway shot. All editing done in Edius.
Haven't heard this Salomila for many, many years. When my parents had more than a few under their belts, the piano would start going and this Salomila was banging all around the piano. Good fun times!
I love hearing stories of homemade music, that was something that I never experienced as a kid. We had a piano for my brother and sister's lessons, but it was never part of parties or family gatherings. You can find a few more versions of "Salomila" in the channel, this is an unusual one because Led is playing in an old family tuning so I'm playing the song for the first time in a C tuning. Probably the last time, too (grin).

There is no better Guitar Music than Slack Key Original
Thank you for adding your comment to the channel. We sure appreciate it.
Fran
every morning I listen to you guys , always wonderful!!!!! Slack key rules!!!
Another of my favorite clips - Led was tuned to an old family tuning so I had come up with a version of "Salomila" in C instead of G.
Fran
I can never get enough of Ledward. He makes it all look so easy and he's always having fun! so much soul in his music. His music always makes homesick.
Fran, I not only enjoy your picking but also your encyclopedic knowledge of slack key.
Que du bonheur !!! Merci !!!
In my opinion Led Kaapana is the greatest kihoalu player of all time. Fran Thanks for sharing, I learn a lot from these videos.
Derrick, it's very gratifying to hear that you're enjoying these videos. I feel very lucky to be able to capture Led in these casual settings.
Fran

soulcatchersong! i love it - cannot stop listening
Sweet sound of Hawaii
That video was a lot fun to shoot, there was a party going in Led's garage so we had to go out into the yard to shoot our clip.
Fran
This is the first songs I have learned. Loving watching and listening to you two guys play together. I learned a pretty simple arrangement of this lovely tune but a toe in the water is a start.
The taropatch version is a fine way to start on slack key, and that's the one we usually play, but Led's family came up with this other way.
Fran
This tuning is really nice! It doesn’t sound anything like the taro patch tuning I’m working on.
Fran, thanx for posting the guitars you both use on most of your videos. And as usual, beautiful music from you and Led.
Sounding so rich together. Mahalo for sharing this mele and It's key spelling. My favorite Uncles wen make my day so ono once again, Hana Ho, nui loa.
Led's music keeps me calm at work. mahalo
Oh, man - right back to Hilo! I am mainland-bound for now, but I want to get back to that island & just blend into the bliss of that place, including the music.
I'd like to be in Hilo right now, that's for sure.

Glad you enjoyed it, Patrick. Thanks for visiting and commenting on so many of our clips.
Fran
My pleasure sir!!
An interesting tuning, great sound. Thanks for the info.
Beautiful!
Thanks, Randy. That tuning Ledward is using is one that very few people use but Led has done a lot with it over the years.
Fran
So smooth
Glad you enjoyed it, Joseph. Thanks for visiting.
Fran
i love it!
This is soooo good
Here's one from Ledward's backyard, he's playing one of the family tunings he learned way back in Kalapana days.
Sorry, Pappy, I don't know of any source for tabs in Led's family tuning. It's sure cool though.
Fran
Oh, good grief !!! I just read this as "Slack Key Backward Style" and wondered how we learn to play it backwards, LOL !!! I can't even do hammer on/off and "pinky bars," let alone backwards. (What I call "pinky bars" are where you bar like the 5th fret for that 3rd chord, then stretch your pinky up another umpteen frets to hit a note).
Nice! Mahalo!
thank you unkos❤️🤙🏾
That was really a fun day, glad you enjoyed it.

Thistype of guitar playing is unknown in the Netherlands. But I love it.
I'm glad you found us, thanks for visiting.
Fran
One of my favorite, mahalo. However I can hear some guy in the back arguing really spoiling a rather excellent duo. Hope it can be reproduced without that negative background noise.
+Lawrence Wong Thanks for visiting, Lawrence. I'm sorry to say that I have no way to remove that background.
Fran
+Lawrence Wong You muss get good ears, I didn't hear anything background noise until you mentioned it.
+Todd White We were shooting at the start of a Kane`ohe Friday Night (which are not limited to Fridays, of course) and that background "discussion" is part of the fun.
Fran
is there a way to drop the tuning that uncle ledward is in? would like to try this out just not with the really tight strings haha
In the description of the video I mentioned the Bflat version of Led's tuning which lowers all the strings one whole step (two frets). In order to play along with the video you could use the Bflat version of the tuning (F Bflat D F G D) then capo up to the second fret.
Fran
woah! what tuning is that? that is unlike any tuning i've seen before. (unless thats the
C-G-E-G-A-E tuning)
The Punahoa version of that tuning switches the two lowest pitched strings compared to the Pahinui version, so it's G-C-E-G-A-E. Led does several different songs in that tuning, and also does some of the variations on the top strings. The "Salomila" on the first Hui Ohana record uses this tuning.
Fran
Lindsey Buckingham, I believe is the guitarist.
my son is in Hawaii so I was informing them about slack key!
