There are a ton of metal bands with flutes of all kinds.
Before he joined Nightwish, I first saw Troy play live for British folk rock band Mostly Autumn, one of the most underrated bands I've ever seen.

Troy was singing in Welsh. Not an easy language to follow.
Welsh is very difficult indeed. I think it translates to: "The sound of mist, smell of moss-grown woods, granite, lichen, the trees and the moon, weaving my world into tapestry of life." Or something like that. . . . . . 🙂

i think i was 9 years old when my Finnish teacher gave me Outsiders by S. E. Hinton to read, that book made me read a lot of books.
Great book. The film version was good too (Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez in the cast) :)
I'm 58 & love so many types of music. But Nightwish is really becoming my favorite, with Floor. She is so precious.
Walden pond is an incredible piece by Thoreau! I caught the connection about halfway through I thought that was incredibly cool! Thank you Heline!🌿🦄

Just recently found Nightwish. Took me a couple days to realize that's not the singer from Epica there both great bands and I'm looking forward to learning more about both bands. Dutch metal is badass

Simone Simons from Epica and Floor Jansen are close friends since After Forever. Simone was then Mark Jansen's girlfriend.
Mark started Epica in 2005 with Simone, but Simone and Floor stayed friends.
See 10th anniversary concert of Epica in which Floor sang 2 songs with Simone, Epica and the orchestra & choir.

I like the subtitles. I've heard this song so many times, but I didn't catch all the lyrics before. Nightwish sure found a treasure in Troy. He plays 5 (or something) different instruments and he sings! But the whole band is a collection of treasures really. They're all so talented.

Sounds like the forest is a really good source of inspiration for songwriters/ musicians in Finland. Anyway, that works very well for Tuomas.
I listened to a fair amount of Symphonic Metal and in all my listening I have never come across another band using pipes and whistles like Nightwish. You are correct. It is is incredibly rare in my opinion.

as a flautist, just wondering if you have heard Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. he is one of a kind. probably before your time. well worth checking out since he is self trained but have watched classicly trained flautist amazed at his technique and showmanship on stage
Beautiful folk metal there. I don't mind on-screen lyrics with Nightwish. It's the only way I can understand most of what they sing. And I'm a born English-speaker.

Heline, you say your not a pro with this type of music, but you're getting there. It's a large learning curve as is any type of music. I enjoy your reactions because first of all you're beautiful, second you enjoy what you're doing which makes me enjoy watching you. Check out the Folk metal band Eluveitie, they use whistles, harps, pipes, hurdy-gurdy, violins. Much more versatile then Nightwish.
Seconded. No silver flute, but a good assortment of celtic flutes, whistles and pipes. Rebirth and Thousandfold are both excellent showcases for the woodwind section.
