    What a great bike shop and people and tools and videos. You all deserve to have great weekends for a long time. If you pros ever wanted to "show off" your perfect build for men's bikes.... maybe a 12spd cruiser style that was very sturdy comfortable and the best peddle you'd ever want for life....I would love it!

    You forgot an important step, which is to clean the exposed cable before pulling it through. Otherwise, you'll pull gunk through your housing

      or even cut the cable in several locations, espacially when the end of the cable is frayed

    I've been waiting for this video, thanks! I was hoping to see my Tourney TX shifter/brake combo here, but it didn't make the cut. LOL Well at least the EF500 model made it in. I guess that's a sign that I need to upgrade (maybe even my derailleur, too).

    Adjust barrel screw before tightening cable. Might be at derailleur (old school) and shifter. Usually one full turn out from fully screwed in (clockwise). Great video!!

    Thanks, I am very knowledgeable with bikes. But, I never worked on thumb shifters. This definitely is helpful since my Trek 4300 needs seviced.

    Helpful video. t’s kinda funny that he calls a Phillips a cross tip.

      The term "Phillips" was one a registered trademark, as was the term "Allen Wrench".

      Also, Shimano shifters use JIS screws, not Phillips.

    I appreciate the content. I must say, though, eight and half minutes of details about how to remove a cable and 30 seconds of how to install one, leaves a lot of questions. What gear should I be in before I lock the cable in place? Does my front derailleur need to be installed first or be in a specific position? I'm sure the comments below could give you plenty more points to highlight. Hope to find the video I need. Anyone have a recommendation?

    Can I use the cable leftovers without the welded end? Will the end cup have enough holding power?

    I ran my cable in through the trigger shifter on 8th gear could that be the reason why my shifter isn't working

    My Shimano 2 trigger style has larger thumb triggers than pointer finger triggers.
    I wish I could reduce the deadzone freeplay in the thumb trigger. Is this possible?
    Bike is a 27.5 Diamondback Expresso in Canada.
    Shifter appears to be shimano ST-EF500-4 which says on it "v-brake" but the bike is discs.

    When you shift down, is that going to a number 1 ?

    • @parktool
      @parktool  6 месяцев назад +1

      That is a confusing topic in its own right.
      "Down shifting", similar to a car, is going to a lower gear ratio, an easier but slower gear. Shift levers with numbers use "1" as the "first gear" or largest sprocket in the back.
      Some people say "shifting down the freewheel" is going from the "top" downward to the bottom small sprockets much like you are "climbing down the sprockets". The chain seen at the top is going downward to the first outermost sprocket.

    How do you pull the housing away from the shifter? Is there a special trick? That step isn't showed in the video.
    I loosened my barrel adjuster all the way and it won't come out. Unfortunately I can't downshift to the lowest gear since the shifter is broken.

    • @parktool
      @parktool  3 месяца назад

      One of the first steps is to loosen the cable at the derailleur bolt. This is for replacing the entire cable. Once the cable is free, pull the housing.

      @Kent Teffeteller Er, yeah... I'm a mechanic, so I don't always get to decide what kind of components I'm working on. I have zero grip shifters on my own bikes, not to worry.
