One other tip: after cutting the cable to length, lightly file each end down to ensure it's even around the diameter and then use a pick or a filed-off piece of old spoke to ensure the entry and exit holes are fully open/round in profile.
Thank you thank you thank you. I just got my bike back after a service and the rear shifting was awful even with adjusting the barrel adjuster. Rather than try and arrange to take it back to the shop which is 15 miles away I watched your video. Turns out the cable hadn't been pulled through at the derailleur properly so a wee adjustment and the gears seem to be fine now.
Absolutely brilliant video. I just wish I had seen it sooner? Jus cost me £145.00 from the cowboys at my local bike repair shop, but thank you anyway. I found your video very interesting
I use heat shrink (the one with adhesive inside) instead of those nasty cable caps. Crimping freys the cable. If the cable cap comes off the cable end if going to frey. With the heat shrink with adhesive the cable stays in tact and the heat shrink doesn't ever come off on its own.
Picked up a gear cable set from ChainReaction, everything for £13 including some beauty little sleeves to prevent frame rub. followed this and was done in less than 10 minutes. Didn't realise replacing the whole cable was so easy.
Good question! If you can feel friction when you're pulling the old cable out or see rust or corrosion anywhere, then yes. There also shouldn't be any sharp bends in the outer that cause more friction.
Hi GMBN you gave me some excellent tips for EMB tire repair kits such as Shoe Goo and Tire fix can you help please with where to buy the large sheets of repair patching material i see you with ,love all your videos keep them coming please Paul.
How to tighten the end of outer cable to the shifter? So that the end of outer cable not loosen of from shifter. Do we need glue to stick the outer cable to shifter or not?
Doddy, I was just talking about cables being replaced with blue tooth tech from the helmet. I was told probably not but I think it's plausible. The future must be with out cables, right?
Any ideas on an improvised tool to shrink the cable end caps? My cable cutter doesn't have an integrated shrinker. I use a regular set of pliers instead, which works but is not ideal.
I messed with my cable and the little barrel thing and it got really tight and now I can’t shift to all my gears because it’s too tight now I feel like I need to replace the cable
Hello there,,just wanna ask,I am using xt rear derailleur, 10s with 11-42 cassete, but I want to upgrade to 11-46 cassete, is it fine to just install my 11-46 ??or do I need to change my derailleur set up,or my chain??please help, thanks.
Should be fine, the distance between each gear should be the same so the derailleur won't complain. However you probably also want to replace your chain since a used one is formed/slackened to the cassette it was used with. Re-using the chain might increase wear on your cassette
Am I the luckiest guy on earth that every time I got a problem, GMBN will upload a video "How To" for the exact problem or maybe I am the least lucky guy In the world since I have so many problems with my bike...?😂😣
Hey Doddy, can you give me a hand? Began setting up Di2 and during Bluetooth initial setup, firmware update bricked my XTR display. Won’t turn on. It’s a light brick. Shimano’s been an awesome company to me before so if it’s a matter of contacting them that’s cool, but if I don’t have to I’d love to take care of it at home. Peace and thanks
Hey Marcus, most bike shops should have the know-how and gear to be able to sort out your Di2 issues. They can connect into your system, reset the parts if necessary and fix any issues. We'd suggest giving that a try.
Just plug it via USB to your computer (don't use the Bluetooth). Launch the Shimano software on your computer and it should reset it all. If not I've also read that you may need to unplug and then reconnect each detailer to reset them.
Hi Doddy. I work in Bike Shop as a mechanic and I always have this debate with my colleague : Should the outer cable be straight when it goes to the derailleur , or should it be longer and have a hook shape ? I always cut it fit, my colleague always leave a "hook". The debate is for 1x systems and hardtails (XC bikes to be precise ) . So can you please give me your thoughts on this. Thanks in Advance . (Sorry for my bad English hope you understand :D )
Hope you've already found some relevant video.. If not, just find a way to connect the old and new cable, like electrical tape, and push in the new and pull the old one out of the internal routing, until the new one emerges from the frame. You should also use 20-30 cm of inner wire to make the connection stronger, but it's tricky to find the correct way..
Hi, Doddy. I am wondering: how can I get myself onto a 2018 nukeproof scout 275 race just like the one you are working on in this video. It seems like all of them are out of stock out there on the market :(
Bobby Hempel Ok, and how do i do that? I didn't find any purchase button on their website. I only see "dealers" tab to be apropriate to my topic and it takes me to bike shops
Hi, my cable keep on loosing when I ride rough sections. My derailleur is Xxtr Shadow Plus | 11-Speed. Brought my bike to the local shop but they said they cannot fix it bec it is Shimano
After about 3 years the last Keurig stopped working ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf initially was able to unblock, however eventually we couldn't fix. That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.
Silicon spray works great in my opinion. It's more like a dry lube and although it doesn't seem super popular I use it on almost everything other then chains. It attracts way less dust
Id say so yes, its the #1 lube i use for my stanchions on the fork and shock, i also use it to lube the inside of outer cables. It is also great for the linkages in the derailleur to keep them moving smoothly.
HELP! Doddy what cable cutters are you using there, I’ve bought two pairs of pretty expensive guillotine cutters now and my out housing has just chewed them up without even being cut, frayed broken ends and split up plastic casing. Losing my mind
Hi George, anything with a metal inner housing (cable brake outer) should be cut with a pair of sidecutters. For gear outer and cables Doddy is using the Park Tool CN-10 cutter which has been sharp for about 3 years so far! Again hydraulic lines should also be cut with the specific tool for the job!
I didn't think I'll replace cable with hydraulics. Hydraulics is expensive and messy, unless you want to keep changing when cable is better. With cable you don't to measure how much to fill the right amount and cleaning up afterwards. I rather stick to cables, than hydraulics.
5 years on, still the the most concise and well presented video on the topic around.
This is one of the most thorough videos I've watched. Really good.
The timestamp 15:19 will take you to routing the cable in the derailleur itself and then setting it up for a ride
Thanks for you video, my cable is ready to change on my Colt surface 64.No need for bike shop ,Thanks from Calgary Alberta .Cheers
One other tip: after cutting the cable to length, lightly file each end down to ensure it's even around the diameter and then use a pick or a filed-off piece of old spoke to ensure the entry and exit holes are fully open/round in profile.
Thank you Doddy! You are the tech master! Liked as always!
Followed this video after having problems with the rear derailleur cable and after replacing it all works perfectly now! Cheers
Great to hear Mike! Good work 👍
Excellent: thanks a lot. The mysteries of the shifter internals are revealed. Essential tip about the solvent/spray grease do's and dont's.
Can you re-use the same cable housing if it's in good shape?
That’s what ima do
Thank you thank you thank you. I just got my bike back after a service and the rear shifting was awful even with adjusting the barrel adjuster. It’s such a pleasure to watch your videos. I think they are the best and clearest bike maintenance movies on youtube. Thanks mate!

thank you for this video! my cable housing broke and i felt confident enough to fix my bike :) 🙏🏻
Great vid from a great master tech! Thanks!
Doddy, you're a god send. Thanks!
Hello Buddy what cable cutters are you using ? looking to buy a pair !!!
it is all easy peazy, after watching 100h on youtube on how to do it :D
Well produced and explained. Thanks.
Happy New year from Bucharest România 🇧🇪
When you replace an inner cable do you have to replace the outer cable as well ?

Very comprehensive and clear, good one Doddy!
How long should the loop of the housing between the frame and the derailleur be? Or doesn't that matter?
Doddy, I was just talking about cables being replaced with blue tooth tech from the helmet. I was told probably not but I think it's plausible. The future must be with out cables, right?
Derek Smith already happening

Heat shrink instead maybe?
thanks for the video, helped this novice a lot!
What brand of cable cutter does GMBN recommend? Hope you put links to tools you use in your videos.
Jbogator park tool
Does this also count for outside cable dropper posts as well?
I messed with my cable and the little barrel thing and it got really tight and now I can’t shift to all my gears because it’s too tight now I feel like I need to replace the cable
Got the new cable run but fuck me I can't get the gears to shift correctly. Being unintelligent at something new sucks.
can a worn cable cause noise in some gears?
your a legend doddy, cheers mate
Super video, just helped me replace my cable. Thanks Doddy!
Thank you for the informational video. It really helps me with repairing my bike!
Really helpful video nice & clear.. Thanks..
Appreciate Doddy's attention to detail. Keep up the great work!!

Jess Dunn Ah I wish that did it. No worries

I have the same Sam Hill Edition Nukeproof bars on my trail bike as is on that Nukeproof Scout
Unfortunately one of the most difficult things is missing: How to replace the outer with internal routing.
Hope you've already found some relevant video..
If not, just find a way to connect the old and new cable, like electrical tape, and push in the new and pull the old one out of the internal routing, until the new one emerges from the frame. Trick is to leave the inner cable routed in still and then use that as a guide, once the outer has been fitted you change the inner as usual.
I bought the SHIMANO opti kit ! Premium .
Thanks Doddy!

I've got a problem my freehub stopped working it's a sram mth-306 how do I repair it ?? Thanks for your answers
No problem for our answers
Hi, Doddy. I am wondering: how can I get myself onto a 2018 nukeproof scout 275 race just like the one you are working on in this video. It seems like all of them are out of stock out there on the market :(
Order directly from nuke proof instead of from a bike shop.
Bobby Hempel Ok, and how do i do that? I didn't find any purchase button on their website. I only see "dealers" tab to be apropriate to my topic and it takes me to bike shops

Is best clamping point the dropper post?
Syncros wheels winner?
this is the only thing i havent done on my bike yet.
Me neither and I'm seeing if this will fix my loose grip shifter 🤞
Lovely.
Legendary 👌🏼

Skip the end cap, use heat shrink tubing.
Can’t u just re use the outer cable ?
Wd40 leaves a residue ( never use on your chain or gears ⚙️
NO! I will not buy cable snip. To get a good cut on the cable, I just use the cut off wheel on my dremel tool.
Wireless xx1 next year thank you SRAM!
Deraileeeer????
Information overload
I have four bikes and I have never seen that shifter in my life why are all these videos with thumbs shifters
aaron sturzenegger because most bikes have thumb shifters not gripshift
Stop talking and get on with the job ffs!!! Nearly 20 minutes for two minutes of work!!!
Too wordy. Show more and reduce wordy explanation.
