    I already have a hamster :) I didn’t know a lot about hamsters the day I got him, since I was at my cousins birthday party, and saw her hamster which was in a small cage with no toys, and no human to interact with. I offered to adopt him, so I used the whole night at their place researching, and convincing my parents. My mom loved animals, but wasn’t sure that I would have the time, and was scared that I would eventually forget about it like my older cousin did. I’m 13, and now have a hamster named Bob ;) I bought the detolf, and did SO much research about hamsters for him. I bought so much stuff it sounds like a lie 😅 I’ve always been saving my money, and been afraid to use it, but it’s like I found my call. He’s my angel, and I will do everything for him, since I told myself that even tho he’s really old, I would give him a special home for his last months. Considering the home he lived in before, he’s actually been alive for a long time now. If my cousin was right about his age, he is 2 years old right now, and is by the looks of it a winter white dwarf hamster. I’m not sure since they didn’t know ;)

    Amazing video, Victoria. This really helped me learn some new information that I didn’t already know.
    I made a few mistakes when I first got my hamster, Toffee. I got her a small cage, really unhealthy food, and unfortunately, took her wheel out on a night. I also made the mistake of having her in my bedroom, even though I was warned multiple times that she would be too noisy. Honestly, I feel really bad for how I treated my hamster.
    And it’s really lucky that I found your channel. Because a couple months ago I got Toffee a HUGE bin cage. And thanks to my sisters friend, Toffee now has a healthy diet made mainly of bird food. My sisters friend is an absolute expert with hamsters. She also has her wheel in on the night.
    But I couldn’t have learnt half of this information without finding your channel, so thank you. I mean it. Your channel has helped me so much with Toffee and I’m so happy that Toffee is now living a happy life, like she deserves. So thank you Victoria.

    My mom wanted something to take care of, we had a guinea pig but she gave him away to a trusted, loving home because he, and I quote from her word by word, "pooped too much, the poo was everywhere." She wanted a hamster because she thought they were cute, I warned her, "Mama, we can't buy an animal just because they're cute." She bought the hamster anyways. The store lady sold us a bad cage, I told her, "Mama, that cage won't work for the hamster. It's too small!" It's fine, she said.
    1 day later after buying him, he escapes from the cage. I went looking for a bigger aquarium cage and sought this as an opportunity to buy the hamster more toys, buy a bigger cage, and spoil him. :) The only thing is, I bought food from the pet store and it doesn't meet his nutritional needs. My mom won't let me buy him another food mix, so I give him boiled egg a few times every few weeks for him to get the protein he needs. I also make home-made nutritional treats for him! The moral of the story is, please, do not buy any animal if you won't take care of them.❣ Always look into an animal before you buy them! Thank you, and have a very Blessed dayyy.

      If you already have the money for better food saved up, I'd say maybe just waste small amounts of food at a time? Like every other time you scoop a spoonful of food into his enclosure also scoop a similar amount into a plastic bag (perhaps this could be done while spotcleaning? Idk)
      If your mom finds out you could always just say your hammy left some food out in the enclosure by their bowl/bottle and it got a bit gross ^^

    Hi, great video as ever. I'm lucky with my George because he is the tamest hamster I've ever owned and he likes human interaction. I typically leave him alone during the day to do his own thing, sleeping,eating etc. Sometimes he doesn't want to be disturbed which is why I leave him to his own devices in the day while checking to see if he is ok. Then at night is when I get to interact with him as he is more self aware and awake. He comes up to see me and I get him out in my hands for a bit. It's a shame to see people treat hamsters poorly sometimes especially when you've been a hamster owner for a few years like you and me. I look forward to your next video. ☺️

On the odd occasion he does stay out when i enter the room, normally after 1am, he will take and pouch treats from me but then as soon as he got a few treats he will run down his burrow and not come back out till he knows we are 100% gone, as in he won’t come out for a good hour or so. Any tips to help reduce his fear and help bond? I’ve done the tissue paper with my scent on but it doesn’t seem to of helped☹️ I managed to get him out twice for bath time bonding and once free roaming but each time he just hid in a corner x

      @Augie the Hamster Hello! Thank you! I’m glad to hear this isn’t just my hamster! As long as he’s okay I’m glad, I was just worried that it was causing him stress. I don’t want to force a relationship with him, if he is a ghost hamster that’s okay, I just don’t want to stress him out or for something else to be causing this! But I’m glad that you managed to be able to pet yours. On the odd occasion he is out, he will take a couple of snacks and he will let me stroke him gently which he doesn’t seem to mind which is good. However I have noticed some night he doesn’t use his wheel, he has a 12 inch wheel but as I’m not able to be in the room while he does use it I’m unsure as to if there could be a problem when he runs on it as in it could be wobbling or something (it spins fine with my fingers however with him in there it could be different)

    Hi Victoria!
    I’m so glad I found you’re channel because a couple of years ago I got one of my own. ❤️
    A while ago, he sadly passed on, but it wouldn’t have been w/o you.
    Recently I realized that my aunt got a hamster for my younger cousins.
    It wouldn’t have been with out you, and I wouldn’t have realized such horrible conditions the hamster had gone through,
    recently I’ve been getting it together, and going to tell her very soon, and recommend a much better lifestyle for the little one.
    Thank you again, Victoria!
    Have a nice day/night!

It was understable when I got him, but time has passed and he doesn't changed much. I've been worrying that I'm the one to blame, that I'm doing something wrong, but I didn't really want to force interactions, so I didn't know what to do. I feel better now, knowing it's perfectly fine to let him be that way. Thank you! 🔥

    I rescued a very neglected hamster I saw online. He had a tiny cage with no wheel and shredded newspapers as bedding. It broke my heart! Now he has a spacious bin cage with so much enrichment. He went from only 32g to 50g so far. He is surprisingly friendly considering his past but I just focus on giving him a happy healthy life. It makes me so sad to think about the life he used to have but I hope whatever time he has left is spent happy knowing someone cares about him.

    Love this video! So glad you touched on all the points! I have three hamsters as well and before adopting them I watched ALL your videos. All of my hammies are living their best life! One doesn’t like to be held, but I love her to death, my other loves to hop in my hand and let’s me hold her and give her little rubsies…my most recent hamster is a rescue and he’s a long haired Syrian who’s terrified of his own shadow. He takes treats from my hand and occasionally lets me pet him. I never try to force any unwanted interaction with him and use the cup method for transferring him to his playpen. As long as my hammies are living a happy, healthy, and enriched life, I enjoy just being in their presence!

    I personally do not find hamsters to be that expensive if you go with a bin cage and a lot of homemade diy stuff and repurposed things from thrift stores and such, but if you did want to do all commercial products specifically sold for hamsters that could be quite pricy! I think that people should really be prepared for vet bills though. It could cost $50-$100 but it could easily cost way more. My hamster had a problem with one of his eyes that was swelled up and kinda pushed out of his head, and the vet visit just to tell us what was wrong was $130. Thankfully he was pretty much okay and he just needs eyedrops every night now, but they told us that if we hadn't taken him to the vet sooner his eye would have dried out from him not being able to close it, and the surgery to remove his eye would've cost $800 or more.

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  3 года назад +1

      Only issue is often times a bin isn’t going to be large enough/deep enough to completely satisfy a hamster, majority of the bins I come across rarely reach 800 sq inches! But of course for other things there’s ways to get around spending hundreds of dollars but that’s gonna depend on what you have access to, where you live etc! I’m glad you were able to get your hamster into the vet in time and could just be treated with some eye drops ❤️

    • @margalothegreat_hams
      @margalothegreat_hams 3 года назад +1

      @@VictoriaRaechel Definitely it sometimes is hard to come across large bins, but thankfully I've been able to find large ones where I live. I'm really glad that I took my hamster to the vet as soon as a could, and now he's happily living a normal life with both eyes. And he's not in a habitrail thanks to you!

    My family have had 13 hamsters and 5 of them were mine. Only one is currently alive, a golden hamster, and he doesn't really "love" human interaction but he doesn't hate it either. My last two dwarf hamsters really loved being held and pet and would run directly to me every time. They were really cuddly. And those two dwarf hamsters were quite used to human interaction and was already quite tamed apart from the other 3 who never got picked up unless it was to "show customers". So I needed to work with the other 3 to get them more tamed.

    Before I got my hamster, I used to sleep with little to no noise in my room, I just couldn't fall asleep if there was noise in my room. And now, I find it kinda funny, that has changed. I can't sleep with the TV on, or listening to music, but I NEED to hear my hamster. It doesn't matter what type of sound he makes, I need to hear him to feel at ease. The "lull" of his wheel when he runs makes me sleepy, and I feel better when I hear him exploring his cage searching for food.

I’ve so far been lucky with lifespans because my first hamster lived for over 2 years (before he had to be put to sleep because he was very ill and in pain) and my current boy, who is 1 and a half years old.

It's just my nephew comes over I keep the hamster in room which not a problem when I was working. There's one time he was awake kept looking at me while I getting ready to go for work. I'm thinking of making a DIY bin cage and attach to large ferplast cage. I had good memories of all my hamsters and let them for playing time. They tend to climb over me or in go to my sleeves. First Syrian hamster climbed on my shoulders it felt like he was dancing at back of my neck. Bless him.

    I remember that my sister was sleeping in my room, at this point in time I had not done much research into hamsters before getting her. I did research after I got her, my sister was a light sleeper and usually, she'd run on the wheel between 9pm to 2am. So my sister would take out the wheel even though it was the only source of anything my hamster could do. Keep in mind, she had her own room but choose to sleep in my room, so I moved into her's with the hamster so it could least have the wheel while I worked on proper cage for her.
