wow man, i was big fan of him, when he passed away it was hard for me, the fact that i wouldn't be able to meet him never ever, but it's what it is, life and death nothing i can do and it sucks
The rev was called the one take wonder because the first album was recorded cover to cover in 1 take, no metronome. He was a huge inspiration to me, I flew from England to Las Vegas to spend my 21st birthday at his kit with a bottle of whisky. Wouldn’t have had it any other way 🤘🏻

I believe Jimmy wrote almost half this album on his own. I would check out Brompton Cocktail. I remember the guitarists complaining about how hard it was to play some of the parts he wrote.

Also there are alot of clips about Syn talking about how jimmy writing the guitar parts drove him crazy because they were so weird and difficult to play but also so good.
Avenged Sevenfold released a series of videos breaking down some of their songs, I think in 2018. When they get to the drums, it's always a treat to hear what crazy sh*t the Rev cooked up and the band goes "That's Jimmy". Synyster Gates commented on several songs that Jimmy wrote (Little Piece of Heaven, Almost Easy were definitely his) during those videos saying that it was sometimes hard playing guitar for Jimmy's songs, because he was playing a guitar part written by a drummer. They were unconventional, and a couple songs were just comped to hell. He spent over a month learning a riff to play it live because it was so hard to do during the record. - The real treat in that series of videos is Whackerman (A7X's current drummer) breaking down Beast and the Harlot, taking a whole episode to talk about the drum part in that song. Hearing their current drummer (who they vetted, making sure he could play all the old stuff) break down their former drummer's insane handiwork is *chef's kiss*.

They were the first Band I discovered on my own and will forever be my favorite. Jimmy is my Drummer
You hit the nail on the head when you called jimmy a song writer. Not only did he write alot of avenged sevenfolds music but he also played keys and sang in a band called pinkly smooth and it's great. Very acquired though lol
I was a slight Avenged Sevenfold fan when he passed (I was just about to turn 9 when he passed) so I didn't know what happened or anything like that. Seeing his work today as a 20 year old is so awe inspiring. The fact that he's been gone 11 years now, and still is one of the most talented and genius musicians in history is just amazing. He's the reason I want to start playing drums. Even if I don't play drums though, the way he inspires me is through his passion and his perseverance. From birth he was seriously disadvantaged and this dude turned his way too short life into a story in the history books. Keep on rocking out in heaven Jimmy, I'll be able to make one of your concerts some day :'-)
I’m from England, when I visited Cali I HAD to go to his grave. It moved me beyond anything that I have felt before. He’s the reason I took up this kind of drumming, just behind Roger Taylor of Queen. He meant alot. I’m glad other people feel the same

Mike was one of Jimmy's idols and why Avenged reached out to him to help them record the Nightmare album after Jimmy died during the writing of it. Mike subsequently went out on tour with Avenged to support that album. There's no replacing Jimmy but Mike as well as Arin Ilejay and Brooks Wakerman have filled a void and helped Avenged to Carry On (no pun intended). I used to be a drummer, I grew up through the 90's, we had some decent drummers in the rock world but honestly it was simplistic, with the exception of Danny Carey and Carter Beauford. Besides the 2 I mentioned, there was no music to play that really challenged you. I remember the first time I heard Jimmy drumming on Bat Country and thinking "finally!!! a drummer that makes me want to play more!" I would venture to say that 90% of the kids that picked up drum sticks between 2006 and 2010, were likely drawn to it by Jimmy.. Heck I was 25 when I first heard him and it renewed my interest and also my faith that there were great drummers out there, and great bands..
I grew up listening to a7x always loved the rev it killed me when he passed especially it being on my birthday there’s always a little bit of sadness that day but it also brings back the good nostalgic memories
Just getting in to the Rev's playing recently after seeing a vid on Drumeo. He makes it look so fluid and effortless. And love the 2x bass kicking. It sucks he left so soon.
YES!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s getting tired of just seeing endless chops all over Instagram. I love guys like Eric Moore but literally all he does over any song doesn’t matter what genre is start chopping it up. Granted he doesn’t do that live he actually has nice groove but you know what I mean.
Even more amazing knowing he recorded this particular album intoxicated. If you watch the Behind the Scenes DVD of the self titled album, it's insinuated that he came in during the afternoons pretty intoxicated already and just ripped. I always wonder what would have happened had he lived longer, but I guess we don't get to pick our time to go. The Rev was not only an amazing drummer, but an amazing musician.
Id love if you can revisit Jay Weinberg from Slipknot, and check out his Drum Cam videos for ‘Solway Firth’ or ‘All Out Life.’ He displays impressive skill, speed, accuracy and style, and I love it. On another note, The Rev and Avenged Sevenfold, they were really the ones that made me fall in love with drumming. Love the videos
Some people like the Rev were just born to do things better. Sure, you can practice your ass off and be good, but that can only go so far. Natural ability shines through
I've seen this clip of The Rev recording of Almost Easy before, but I have never seen the bits before and after he starts drumming. Don't know where the hell this came from lol. And if anyone wants to check out more of The Rev's song and musical abilities you should check out Pinkly Smooth, a side project band of his with other Avenged members (Syn and I think their bassist at the time).
The Rev was my biggest inspiration for why I started playing drums AND why I took my piano playing the way I did. *(if you didnt know, he was also a pianist and wrote most of the piano licks you hear in their older albums)* My goal is to some day write a full cover of his last song "Fiction" and to master the "Double Ride Thing" as he called it.
I know I'm a bit late but I think someone said this already. If u look at Jimmy/The Rev in 4:35, he was holding that little laughter/smile coz he made a slight mistake haha

Jimmy inspired me to pick up music again!! As a bassist I LOVE drums and love to noodle around myself!!! His playing is always flawless!!!
Been waiting for you to do this reaction.
M Shadows & The Rev were the main forces behind the white album. They wrote a majority of the songs.
You should listen to Crossroads by them. He does the “double ride thingy” and it’s just an awesome song.
I'm glad I have a photo of his kit when hard rock casino was still around
You're such a lovely guy. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for the lovely comment
Please check out my first video on him
this is so wholesome to watch
Great vid and breakdown. Loved it!! Thanks!!!
Id love if you can revisit Jay Weinberg from Slipknot, and check out his Drum Cam videos for ‘Solway Firth’ or ‘All Out Life.’
He displays impressive skill, speed, accuracy and style, and I love it.
On another note, The Rev and Avenged Sevenfold, they were really the ones that made me fall in love with drumming.
Love the videos
Some people like the Rev were just born to do things better. Sure, you can practice your ass off and be good, but that can only go so far. Natural ability shines through
Dude, The Rev is a total chad of the drums
Aye man, your channel is awesome! Just found today. Keep up the god work👍
Yep, City of Evil is what got me into drumming years and years ago. Hearing Beast and the Harlot lit a fire in me
I've seen this clip of The Rev recording of Almost Easy before, but I have never seen the bits before and after he starts drumming. Don't know where the hell this came from lol.
And if anyone wants to check out more of The Rev's song and musical abilities you should check out Pinkly Smooth, a side project band of his with other Avenged members (Syn and I think their bassist at the time).
Cmere stallion duck! Man, Jim was amazing.
The Rev was my biggest inspiration for why I started playing drums AND why I took my piano playing the way I did. *(if you didnt know, he was also a pianist and wrote most of the piano licks you hear in their older albums)*
My goal is to some day write a full cover of his last song "Fiction" and to master the "Double Ride Thing" as he called it.
Last comment his playing speaks for itself almost easy - the almost badass drummer
one of my fave songs to drum
The best drummer in the world
Man I miss him, great video
Man he grooved! Awesome!!!
I know I'm a bit late but I think someone said this already. If u look at Jimmy/The Rev in 4:35, he was holding that little laughter/smile coz he made a slight mistake haha
Jimmy was definitely a beast of a player and a lovely guy. We can see how loved he was. Would love to see you do a review on Clay Aeschliman, the drummer for Polyphia.
