This was a project me and my friend Tessa Bentley worked on alongside Fox Fires during our last year at University. For me it was mainly an exercise in experimenting with different software and techniques for animation. I hope you like our silly girl on a big mission!

Some fun facts:
-This was a side project made during the same school year as Fox Fires, at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.
-90% of the animation was made in one day, we didn't have to finish it to pass but I really wanted to as Tess had finished all the backgrounds. I set a timer and gave myself 20 minutes for each shot - 10 to draw and 10 to comp/animate. So it's a bit rough around the edges!
-It was made to test out quick/simple styles of animation, I tried TVPaint, Toonboom and AfterEffects. AE was the quickest for this project.
-All dogs are good dogs
-The real story of Laika the space dog is what is considered to have sparked the animal rights movement. It's very sad and very interesting, a worthwhile piece of history to look up if you have some spare time.

She’s a girl, and she’s a real dog! Laika (also known as лайка) was a street dog the soviets used in the space race. However, her story doesn’t end very happy because they knew she wouldn’t survive coming back down to Earth, so she passed away on her way home :(

I'd actually enjoy watching this if it was ever made into a movie... Cool concept :)
This looks so amazing!! The animation is wonderful and smooth, and ah the part where the spaceship goes light speed looks really cool! And oh, space, I had just finished watching Interstellar in class yesterday so, it's nice to see something else about space.
But Laika's pace journey looks so awesome!! And why did she look like she was going to shoot the female space dog? ohmygosh betrayal?! Hm! This looks so interesting!

RIP Laika, humans were really in the wrong with your embark. This is a really cute story and turns a humorous spin on the small tragedy. I feel like more people should know about Laika and her sad journey.
