Graduation film from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Scotland.
Note from the director:
I pitched this idea in February 2018 and had the privilege of working with a number of my classmates and 3rd-year assistants. They each brought so much talent and enthusiasm to telling this story and I couldn't have been more fortunate to have them as my team. Please stay for the credits and look them up!
Fox Fires is inspired by the Finnish folk tale of the aurora borealis. The film blends 2D and 3D animation together.
Thank you so much to my composer, Denny Schneidemesser, for all of his help in bringing the film together and for scoring the work so beautifully. I've admired Denny's work since I first watched animated shorts on RUclips and decided to pursue animation myself, having him on board was a dream come true.

No, mother, it's just the northern fox lights.
The fox being the only creature that didn’t speak in grunts, squeaks, etc and also being the only one who couldn’t become a star is just very smart to me
Nice pfp.

Y’all this six minute short film made me feel more genuine and visible emotion than most 2-hour movies. Huge kudos to everyone who worked on this!! I don’t know how these people do it tbh
i agree, this story had meaning, backstory, lore to our world, creativity, emotion, and so much more. many movies can't compare to this 6 minute animated youtube video
A well written, well thought and emotional story, can be given to us in a short space of time, a message. That's the gift of a good storyteller.
I came here because I played the most beautiful game ever called Spirit of the North. Based on this Finnish folklore tale of Tulikettu. Play it!!
I dont know why, but realizing that the fox tried so hard to be a star, but instead became unique and special makes me feel happy and confident in myself.
*Confident
I'm sorry, but you are correct and it was something I haven't considered until you just mentioned it, it's really poetic as it is beautiful and it is VERY beautiful. I loved this animation and I loved your comment.
I Just Saw This After I Made A Similar(But Longer) Comment! But I'm Glad Somebody Else Also Got The Same Idea. It Is Amazing How They Portray It In The Animatic Though.
Out of curiosity, why does something have to be different to be considered special?
@@yolo9050 It's the unique factor of it, the more rare it is the more valuable it is. I'm not saying I agree with it but that's the psychology I read from that seeing that factor. If it's any consolation the other animals were still cool.
Maybe you are the fox in a world of wolves
Something about how the Moon is animated in such a way that it feels computer generated (maybe it is) makes it feel truly alien, as though its not supposed to be on the planet. The animals all have a hand drawn aesthetic, giving them a more natural feel. Its amazing
Maybe they meant for it all to be that way intentionally, for those very reasons?
It makes sense making the moon appear supernatural considering it's a celestial body after all
i personally think the animals got the same animation style upon becoming constellations.
they... they are? it's pretty obvious
The animals became 3d animated when they turned into their constellation form. The fox never did, though, at least I don’t think.
Years later and the swell of music when the fox begins to run through the sky still makes me tear up.
Same. This was done right. So simple yet so epic at the same time. Music alone was so beautiful. Years after I've seen this I'm still tearing up.
Yeah.
I reversed the fox's dialogue, and I was able to clearly hear what the voice actor said: "I _do_ wanna help light up the sky!! I don't understand, I've tried so hard to be a star, like everyone else..." She has such a cute, sad voice, it's just perfect! (I guess now we finally know what does the fox say)
I tried it too it was beautiful ❤
Ikr she's so cute and has a sweetest voice ever

Growing up on the Navajo and Zuni Indian Reservations, I loved the legends about how the animals taught the humans life lessons. I read these stories from Indigenous people's from all over the world and loved them all. As my dad told us, my brother and sisters, these stories have a distinctly human sound to them. I think that he knew exactly what he was telling us as he relayed these stories over a campfire.
I just found out that this story is from the Finnish Zodiac, fantastic.
The music when the fox is bounding through the sky always makes me tear up, even if I watch this video back to back. It’s so incredibly beautiful and powerful
Can I just say that I think the choice to make the animals and moon spirit not speak english was a genius idea

Wow it's already been a year...
I've seen this animation when it first came out, and yet, even now, it still makes my skin prickle with amazement and joy. It's so beautiful.
In Finland we call The Northern Lights: "Revontulet" witch means The Fox Fires. I was shocked when I heard that they're "The Northern Lights" in English! It means comeplitely different thing!
Hailey yeah, it’s really cool to learn how in different cultures things can be different, it’s one of my favorite things to learn about
In English Foxfire is something completely different. It's the bio luminescent fungi that only glows in curtain conditions! I have seen it and it's really cool.
that was an interesting fact!
wow, never knew that!. . .that makes so much more sense, calling it "the fox fires"
because there are constellations, that are the shapes of animals
Interestingly enough, the English name is borrowed from the French, who were the first to call them the _"Northern Lights"._
Though the words _"Aurora Borealis"_ originate from the Roman deities - Aurora: Goddess of Dawn & Borealis: God of the North Wind - hence "Lights from the North" or "Northern Lights". - Though I quite like _"The Fox Fires"_ in Latin too - _"Vulpes Ignes"_
What do you call the southern lights?
I like how the animals were animated in 2D, but the moon and the star animals were in 3D animation.
Yeah, it really makes it seem like they’re from another world/dimension.

I love your character design! In my opinion the fox is cutest. It was creative to make the fox Aurora Borealis
It’s not their idea. This is a real story from Finnland
At first when he's like "I wanna be a star" and the moon was like how bout this, the entire time I was like "he better become a comet or something or I'll cry" and then he became the Aurora borealis and that was mega dope.

The fox wanted to be a star just like everyone else, when something much greater was in store for her. If something doesn't happen the way you want it to, do not despair. There could be something so much better than you could have ever imagined possible waiting for you. Don't limit yourself to what everyone else can do. Be true to yourself and you may find a purpose greater than what you were striving for.

When I seen the part where the fox felt that he failed, that hit me hard. I know that feeling, the feeling where you feel like you’re not good enough and everything that you try fails. But the part where the moon turned him into the northern lights just wow.
I agree a whole lot with your statement. I know that feeling too, believe me, I do.
What I got out of the story was that if you try your very hardest but do not succeed the first, second or even third time, it's probably not because you're not good enough, but because you're trying in a way that's not good enough for you. You observe others and how they succeed in their own sort of way, and in turn, try to do it yourself. The problem with that is that it isn't always guaranteed to work. What's best for others isn't necessarily the best for you. Most goals are achieved in a different way and most of the time in an unexpected way.
That's only my opinion of it, of course.
I agree! I sometimes feel like I’m just a follower when I’m with my friends, but I manage to hide it! This is very true :)
(I don’t know what else to say :| )
I know that feeling...I hate it,I can’t really *remember* a time when that feeling hit me like a bullet,But,I can feel and sense that I’ve experienced it.
Wolfie Lizzy ‘(I don’t know what else to say :| )’ *relatable*. Don’t you HATE when your talking to somebody and then there’s this awkward silence because you have *not a CLUE* of what to say and it’s like: ‘uhhhhh...So...Uh,AcK! How waaaaas your day...?...’
It was a very inspiring message 😭😊😃
I come back to this one every once in a while. I found it when it first came out, and I have loved it ever since. Little things remind me of the video and it brings me peace. This is a wonderful animation.

The legend of revontulet, or Fox's fires, is that there is this mythical Firefox which all the hunters desired to hunt which is very, very elusive and if you managed to hunt it you would get the riches and fame. The aurora borealis come from fox running between the fells, tail whipping the snow in to the sky and fur scratching the trees producing sparks setting the sky in fire.
