If I was Nissan, I woulda taken a slightly different approach on pricing. I woulda thrown the LSD and the best brakes on EVERY car and then let everything else be a la carte enhancements. Upgraded leather, upgraded sound system, bigger set of wheels, etc. The only thing really missing on the base Z is the LSD. Make the base price $1000 higher and throw it in every car. Then you really are undercutting the Supra by $10K and they will fly off the shelves. If someone wants to upgrade the other stuff they can, but the basics are all there.

I'd rather buy an aftermarket LSD. They're 100× better anyways. The stocker just becomes a paperweight. The base, I believe, is more for the racer minded. You always change LSD and brakes. So why pay for "better" OEM stuff that you're just going to replace?

For me, I am leaning toward the Z because I can relate this car to the iconic Datsun 240Z of the 70s. The Z is also all Nissan and is less expensive than the Supra. I had the 1985 Toyota Supra bought new and drove it for 23 years and 290K dependable miles.

FYI as a Q50 owner and experience with the VR30 , this engine can get way more power with just bolt ons. So you open up the exhaust and add intakes and you can get a extra 150 hp or more with a good tune . So a Z with bolt on can easily be in the 500 hp or more. I got my q50 with the 300 hp VR and FBO and iam at 440 whp. Its a great engine if you know how to work on it, and this makes the z a great base platform .

If it's $50k+ get the Supra with its proven B58, refinement, esp when the manual comes out.
Honestly, performance model should have been $45k imo. For the upgrades you're getting, $10k is a very hefty price. $5k would have been a lot more reasonable. Also would have been a lot more compelling in comparison to the Supra.

When it comes to the looks, I think the biggest issue with the supra is that the shorter wheelbase kinda changes what we know as a supra. With the Z, they really paid attention to detail with the design and respected the Z heritage. Sure the FT-1 was a cool concept but it loses some character when they had to follow regulations to make it production ready.

Great video! When pricing was announced for the new Z I thought the $40k base makes a lot of sense, but the PERFORMANCE version seems like a tougher sell at $50k...Not when compared to the Supra, but on paper it's tough to beat the Mustang GT!

The B58 is all BMW. Toyota and everyone that understands engines will agree that this is currently the best 6 cylinder engine.
    Toyota Fans:
1: OMG this is not a real Supra (Lie). It sells at official Toyota dealers.
2: Engine is only reliable because Toyota worked on it somehow (Lie) BMW has been making inline 6 since you was born. Always been reliable with OEM parts and regular maintenance schedules. Toyota had nothing to do with it.
3: This car is great. I will buy if it had a manual. (Lie) Manual version is coming. Where is your reservation?
    4. 2jz is better. (Lie) B58 is better than 2jz at absolutely everything up to 1100hp. 2jz block makes sense for 1500+hp which few will make.
Again Toyota had nothing to do with development of this engine. They didn’t even bother making their own interior. Welcome to BMW land. It is a great car. Definitely a worthy successor to Mark 4. Rumor is that BMW/Toyota will put s58 engine next.
