- I graduated from high school in 1995, and this sketch book was made in '96, but I cut way back on my drawing for a couple years and really didn't pick it up again until 1998. I was 21.

I have to say I am really impressed with your sketchbook. Not just because of the art...but because it shows a teenager that was really driven. I wonder if you know how rare that is? I am going to show my two boys this video. I believe it will inspire them too.

i'm just out of secondary school myself and gosh by the same stage in your life you're leaps and bounds over what i can do. on the bright side, i found a sketchbook from when i was a tween and had a good laugh at my old drawings and realized i learned a lot in just a few years. hopefully as an adult i can progress more.

well, he probably started drawing a few years back Like it took me three Years to get a good grasp of anatomy. **the first year I started drawing and it was like ugly box characters, 3 years of drawing I draw Comic poses XD. Time flies**

Found an old sketchbook from high school/college, and was pretty entertained at how far ive come, but your stuff even from back then is incredible!
I'll be done with high school this month...I have...a lot of work to do.
I've had an abundance of sketchbooks throughout my life time. Some I still have and some I have lost. Good thing I have a great memory, to redraw what I've lost. I have to say art is a big part of my life. Hopefully I can keep up the great work like the rest of the art community. Yes sir! By the way Jake Parker your doing a fantastic job on keeping art alive! I find when artist look at work from even a few months ago they are always like "Oh man i was so bad back then, I would do nothing the same." I really like how you enjoy your old artwork it was very refreshing.
Thanks for posting these videos. They are brave. For a long time I couldn't even share my art with anyone but the trash can. Posting and selling is giving a little piece of yourself away. Something quite naked about the process. Anyhow thanks Jake.
I was just going through some old highschool and college stuff the other night while setting up my new work space. It's fun and surreal to see the old stuff and then look at the newer work being done. Thank you for another great video sir!

+Raven Cross Yeah it's almost depressing, when I was that young I was still convinced that people couldn't become artists. But what maters isn't then: but now!
Currently 17 right now, I kinda regret throwing away all my artwork from when I was 5-6 years old, usually I drew buses, trucks and trains back then :P But I still preserve some drawings from when I was 11, I usually drew expensive cars and cop cars. I still do it today, only my drawings improve overtime.
Wow you were really good back in the day! I am at college and not even a third of the people I know are as good as you.... Great inspiration

It isn't really talent. It's Just practice. Talent is but the inspiration you get to start drawing. and he probably practiced a bunch, which I aspire to :D

I recently found an old hard bound sketchbook from high school and It's been interesting to see how I was back then to how I am now. Great video!
I like looking at other artists sketch books too. it's interesting to observe others growth. also, art has a unique way of capturing certain feelings, and it's different for each person.
Magiano's is always great, but if you wanna eat at a great local restaurant, Steuben's is my favorite... can't wait for Denver comic con!

That's great! If you've got a good work ethic and an ability to learn I don't think you're ever too old to embark on new adventures. I still want to try out new things and sometimes I wonder if I'm too old. Then I remember that Miyazaki didn't start drawing his manga Nausicaa until he was 40 years old and I re it's never too late to try something new.

I was born in 1998. some of this is before then and I haven't et gained the skills for that level of art... Gotta try harder!. Funny thing is tho, I wasn't expecting you to show such fantastic sketches/drawings, was looking for a feel good video rather then a get motivated video lol

Jake, this is not fair. the reason to watch an old sketchbook art is to see the progress of the artist, from kiddish art to PRO level mature quality. but I see your art in 96 and to me, if you are 100% now, in 96 you were 98%! look at the work! it is almost the same as last year. little AVATAR Navi female @ 4:38. young SKULL chaser@ 3:40. Fox kid. dinosaurs, robots, ships! what changed? be reasonable and show us your sketchbook from kindergarten so that we may blow our minds.

Very good stuff, Jake! I remember some of your stuff from around 2000 or 2001, and you were (imho) much better than this already, but still very well drawn stuff.
Man oh man. If I had my sketchbooks from just after high school -- (a) they would be really really bad and (b) they would just be page after page of me redrawing stuff by Erik Larsen and Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee.... And Warner Bros. cartoon characters.

I'm 16, got in to art about six months ago and this is making me really disheartened cause I'm still trying to draw a face I'm happy with.
I know you're trying to inspire us not make us ragingly depressed, but when I was in highschool I was being locked in the back yard every day after school being told it was "babysitting" and thinking writing ideas on paper would make me an artist some day, then I get to college and learn "nope! you are less of a human than others because everyone else actually studied in Highschool and now it's physically impossible for you to make up the time you lost."
