Oh man, I have got to show this video to my 7 yo daughter. She is going to LOVE both the female warrior in dragon armor and the mash-up of the dinosaur & unicorn Pegasus. Your analogy of our sketchbooks being our own R&D departments really hit a chord with me in that it is OK to goof around with silly ideas to see where they take me.
Wait... your son, who wants you to draw robot Tigers, is named Calvin? Hah! :D Anyway, I always look forward to these vids a lot, find them very motivational!
allluckyseven Oh for sure! Not just the ink, but he often has that Watterson-like ability to combine the cool and badass with the cute and cartoony at once :P
I always find your videos educational. Whether it's technique from your drawing videos, business advice from your commentary, or inspirational tidbits, you set a high standard for multitalented freelance artists.
Great video! I would love to see a "Drawing A Spaceship/Airship" vid, as you mentioned! (Ok, I threw the airship part in as I am fond of airships and would love to see more of them by you) :D (I too have the Lego AT-AT, love it so much)
Oh! And it would be great to see that spacecraft video. Interesting vehicles are a tough thing for me to draw (I tend to make everything with flat sides, no paneling, and zero busy areas). These videos are convincing me to take a few SVS classes.
Thanks for sharing your sketchbook! You mention filling a sketchbook per month, but there are many sizes of sketchbooks available from 50 page pocket sized ones, to much much larger books with hundreds of pages. What do you have in mind when you say sketchbook? I see yours has a really nice paper quality that can handle marker and perforated pages. Would you mind sharing the brand name? I find marker bleeds in the book I'm currently using.
elyxandra The point is to draw a few hours every day. Whether you end up filling 10 small sketchbooks or half of a large one, the point is to use it as a measuring tool to see how you're doing on your daily drawing.
Thank you for these helpful videos Jake. One thing I noticed is how "clean" this sketchbook is which I find really impressive. I'm wondering whether you keep a messier sketchbook where the rehearsals and explorations happen before the final inked version or the accuracy just comes with years of professional experience?
I'm sorry. You don't have to fill a sketchbooks every month. Just draw when you can and use it how you want to. I can fill a 60 page sketchbook in about two months. But one thing with a sketchbook a month is art block. I get art block so frequently, because I burn myself out all the time. It's not needed. But especially if you look up to an artist and they say you have to do something, you don't. Use your sketchbook how you want to. It's art, have fun with it and draw when you can, the more often you draw, the quicker you improve. And never worry about how you sketchbook looks. I have super sketchy stuff and then really refined pieces that have nothing to do with the sketches. It's up to you how you use it and how quickly you go through it.
I have a few questions to ask you, if that's okay! Sorry if you've been asked this a gazillion times but: - What sketchbook did you use to draw all those sketches at the beginning of the video? - What drawing pencil do you use? - Do you use a water pen? If so, what kind? Thank you for reading!
Hey, I know it like two years after you posted this, but still... If you are still looking for female armor that covers the whole body, you can check out erza scarlet. She is a fictional manga character, from the manga "Fairy Tail". She is a badass swordswoman and some of her armors are awesome. Yeah thats it. I just wanted to let you know, in case you didn't. By the way, I just started watching your episodes, and started from season 1, and the previous one really help me with a similar problem. So thank you so much! I hope you continue inspire people and help them when they need it
Thanks for sharing the "research and development" talk. I'll keep those words with me for as long as I can. It helps justify the time I spend doodling in my sketchbook rather than on my tablet making something. Also, great female warrior. I prefer the more realistic method of armor. Looks badass.
Maybe you don't have too much time for this, but is it possible for us to send you pictures of our art to give critiques on? Also thank you for being a great teacher. Also, while you can draw everyday to make a profit, I think sketching is a great way to get away from the job, so to speak, and it's like a relief from the regular business of life. For this inktober, while I've had fun thinking ideas, I haven't been sketching for "fun" so when I did today, it was a nice little break.
hey Jake, you mention that you got the rocket raccoon proportions better, does that mean you normally only eyeball them or does it mean that while making the design you liked more the second set of proportions you used?
Loving these videos! Hope you can clear something up for me: What should we fill our sketchbooks with? Should most pages be polished, inked, and colored? My whole sketchbook is like your sketchy unfinished pages, is that not building my skills fully? Thanks
Cool I loved the video, thanks for all the valuable info. About the dinossaur turning into a bird, really what happened is that the arms turned into wings gradually. They didn't lose their arms....
would you not recommend just sticking to digital drawing only? I draw all the time but its 90% digital, I found it easier and I don't have to purchase lots of paper and pens etc... What is your opinion on digital sketching vs real life sketching, is one better than the other when trying to mater your craft?
If digital is working for you then do it. I just like the ease of flipping through my old sketchbooks because it's easy to see my progression as an artist. Drawing in a sketchbook has also trained me not to be reliant on ctrl z and work with the mistakes I make.
Thanks for the response! You bring up some really good points, I didn't even realize how much of a crutch the 'undo' button has become for me. I have really been taking advantage of it, and even though my artwork is getting better I find that my intention for each mark is becoming less and less critical. I'll try to keep that in mind while I work. Thanks again for the response and thanks so much for all that you do! One of the most inspirational artists here on RUclips!
Fantastic work! Your "scribbles" are anything but. If you don't mind my asking, do you know any good resources for pencils/pens/paper/sketchbooks that artists on the go can use? Maybe perhaps something pocket-sized, or just cheap and durable? I'd love to carry a book and a pen along with me wherever I go, but I can never get anything solid enough to let me finish anything, as my drawings often get smeared or dirty throughout the day. What kind of sketchbooks and pens/pencils do you use? Thanks! Scribble until you find something!
ExTess If you go look at my descriptions for the videos I post links to the pens and sketchbooks I use. They work for me, and it might be a good place for you to start.
Can you please make a video about how you use the brush pen, you and skottie just tease me so bad with that pocket pen. im so use to a pencil and inking with liner-pen that the brush tip just eludes me. it may be because im so use to pressing hard to feel the drawing and with the pocket pen its like drawing with a feather on air. lol help - blessings Jake Parker oh and shoutout to ***** on the board.
Awesome stuff Jake! Seeing your sketchbook says a lot about the artist. I really like your humanoid characters a lot. they look awesome but I have a question that recently happened to me. I applied to a video game company and they were like " ohh your into anime and you are not video game material " Now I mention artists that I like but all they said was can you draw like Jim Lee? Everything all cool and real and not anime and I laughed but Soon it started bothering me. They showed me work they considered anime and I was pretty surprised that lots of it were cartoony stuff from recent artist that we all know but I noticed that it was the eyes. They were round and a little big. Do you have any advice on that? I also preordered! I missed your first book but I can't wait for the second one! I'm about to finish one of my sketchbooks now and start a new one. Thanks Jake! - Jeff
Jeff Munoz If you're applying to a game company your portfolio should match what they do. A portfolio to get into Blizzard will look entirely different than a portfolio for Disney. If you find a company that you want to work for, do some homework on them first. Look at what they do, what kind of games/movies they make, and make a portfolio to match that. If you find yourself drawing in a style that leans towards anime, and the company you want to work for does realistic fantasy, then make sure you don't put anime in your portfolio....or at the very least change the size of the eyes. I know it's a little thing, but it shows that you get what the company is about, and puts their confidence in you that you'll be a good hire.
I agree on catering to what they want by changing your portfolio. I guess it just got to me because they bashed most of the people I liked and they weren't people like Jamie jones, or shaddy safadi and so forth. Thank you for the reply back, Jake.
Do these Moleskine sketchbooks you use have 120 individual pages? the amazon page says it does but I was wondering if that is counting both sides of the page.
But wait...! What if you're retired, want learn how to draw more than stick figures but don't even know where to start? Nothing fancy like robot /tiger/racecars spaceships. Cartoon uppies, puppies, kittens, flowers, and sunshine sky's. Loved to watch Bob Ross but alas...
"If you guys wanna see me drawing this one..."
Why... YES! Of course! I can't get enough of your videos, Jake!
Funny how those characters ended up making it into skyheart ! Wow ! So cool! I love that you ended up making that comic and it looks amazing !
Oh man, I have got to show this video to my 7 yo daughter. She is going to LOVE both the female warrior in dragon armor and the mash-up of the dinosaur & unicorn Pegasus. And Jake's ink lines reminds me a lot of Watterson's.
allluckyseven Oh for sure! Not just the ink, but he often has that Watterson-like ability to combine the cool and badass with the cute and cartoony at once :P
and so, that "little furry character" becomes Wake in the graphic novel "Skyheart"
I found this ridiculously interesting. It's so much fun to see other artists sketchbooks, it's like stepping into someone's mind.
i agree with you on the women wearing armor that covers the whole body. maybe thats a concept i will explore. 😉
Exactly what I was looking for. Subscribed.
I really appreciate that you did this and shared your experience.
Are you familiar with the works of Skottie Young?
Kesh R Yes, very.
Man kesh is better than u
They each have their own style though
I always find your videos educational. Whether it's technique from your drawing videos, business advice from your commentary, or inspirational tidbits, you set a high standard for multitalented freelance artists.
Antonio Tyler Sketchworks wow, thanks.
Jake Parker Yeah, no prob. Seriously, I've been following you since Throttle. I've learned a lot from you through osmosis.
Antonio Tyler Sketchworks Throttle?! Oh wow. That was a life time ago.
New to your channel. Just realised you started inktober. Respect.
Thank you for these videos. I personally find them very motivating and inspiring every time.
thanks jake! discovered you yesterday and have been learning so much from you!
How is your art now?
Great video! I would love to see a "Drawing A Spaceship/Airship" vid, as you mentioned! (Ok, I threw the airship part in as I am fond of airships and would love to see more of them by you) :D
(I too have the Lego AT-AT, love it so much)

I did get a copy of the agent 44 digest! super great to look at.
Quite an eye-opener, Jake, thank you!
2:44 This right here inspires me to be neater with my art notes
Awesome video as always. Thank you for warrior female!
Great work as always Jake Parker, I definitely plunder my own sketches for new characters to stick in my stories.

Shaded Corners Thanks!
I love your style! Keep up the good work.
WOW Jake I never knew you through those books away.
Found you through Will Terrell's video. Ended up binge-watching everything on the channel. Thank you for being awesome! :D
I appreciate you drawing a cool appropriate armour for a warrior girl.
5:59 foreshadowing skyheart!
Thanks for sharing your sketchbook!

He links the sketchbook he's using in the description :) Moleskine Cahier 7.5 x 10
Ah, thank you Stacey! I thought it might be a Moleskine.
Stacey A Thanks Stacy.
elyxandra The point is to draw a few hours every day. Whether you end up filling 10 small sketchbooks or half of a large one, the point is to use it as a measuring tool to see how you're doing on your daily drawing.
It's a moleskine cashiers collection plain journal
6:20 I like that guy, too. I prefer these to the earlier versions I saw in another video.
AND YES I want to see you draw a spaceship.
I like your theme music
11:50 I actually like the design you put on the side of that ship, but that's just me.
Great Video Jake!
Thank you for these helpful videos Jake. One thing I noticed is how "clean" this sketchbook is which I find really impressive. 6:00 the beginning of sky heart

Awesome video!
Your space ships are fun to look at.
I am frustrated by your drawings of spaceships and mechs, because they are SO GOOD, and I'm not at that level...YET.
ShyPoke I’m frustrated because of that and also cause as a big Star Wars fan I can’t believe he called it a at at. (Jk im not that mad because of it)

just saw this, I would had totally bought that sketch book
I like your style. My favourite artist is Humberto Ramos
What do you use to scan your drawings?
Ive been looking for a printer that helps me scan stuff and print on bristol?
Kilson Tejada I use the EPSON Expression 10000XL, but more affordable epson scanners do just fine.
Nice work!

Alonso Soriano Both! You need to do everything to get good at everything.
11:54 yes
What's that orange colored pencil you use? it looks neon. I want!
Hi Jake! Sorry to bother you with a similar q than previous ones, but what type of paper do you use to print? (You should do one about materials :B)
5:10 He predicted The Scuttler from Lego Batman!
Cool I loved the video, thanks for all the valuable info.
About the dinossaur turning into a bird, really what happened is that the arms turned into wings gradually. They didn't lose their arms....
gerbilho haha, I know. I was just messing around.
What kind of pencil are you using for your base sketch?
You should get at Nintendo for some "young star fox" comic licensing. Him, his gear, his Prototype Arwing. SWEET!
6:00 looks just like one of the aliens from the Redline intro
3:32 first thougt: guts w/ a little bit of cowboy bebop?
did u create the racoon from guardians from galaxy??????????
How did u learn to draw
post that video if you haven't already
How do you sketch to "cool down"? :)
would you not recommend just sticking to digital drawing only? I draw all the time but its 90% digital, I found it easier and I don't have to purchase lots of paper and pens etc... +Nerd Purpose At some point I just got strong need to draw in more traditional medium. Practice what you like, eventually you probably gonna try many.
Is funny that in minute 6:26 you say that you want to a comic with does character and know you have one.
I go to high school do homework and go out with friends and I get through about 4 scetchbooks a month
Fantastic work! Your "scribbles" are anything but.

Thanks!
id like to see the spaceship drawing video
Post that ship video!
Do you reccomend investing in a good sketchbook or just buying cheap ones? or does it depends on the use of the sketchbook and your progress level?
Totally depends on what you want to use the sketchbook for.
Hello
How do you add the water mark in the corner of your video?
Can you please make a video about how you use the brush pen, you and skottie just tease me so bad with that pocket pen. im so use to a pencil and inking with liner-pen that the brush tip just eludes me. it may be because im so use to pressing hard to feel the drawing and with the pocket pen its like drawing with a feather on air. lol help - blessings Jake Parker oh and shoutout to ***** on the board.
sir i love to draw cartoon on paper bt i hate software ,, is there any better future in animation fr me???

11:54 yes make a video
Have enough people requested to see the video about the spaceship you didn't like from this sketchbook? I would certainly like to see the video!
Awesum stuff. Do you draw everything from imagination?
Wouter Winter Thanks. I use my imagination a lot, yes.
Why do you always use an orange pencil to sketch it out? instead of a normal pencil?
is clearer to ink this way, he could use blue or red instead but is about preference
Do these Moleskine sketchbooks you use have 120 individual pages? the amazon page says it does but I was wondering if that is counting both sides of the page.
+Margot Williams Pages are counting front and back, look for sheets. Its been 7 months so im pretty sure you already know this haha
I believe the proper term is PegaRexiCorn :P Great video, I'm going through your whole series and it's really inspiring me.
That one christmas movie?
what is the average size of the sketch books you use
7 ish x 9 ish
What type of paper do you use to print out your secondary linework? I use mostly copic's, and I can't find a printer paper I like to use them with.
Its Hammermill laser copy paper.
thank you!!!!
Why do you use an orange color to sketch?
Arturo García I like orange.
Has anyone seen the generation tech video where he talks about how the at at is so badly designed?
But wait...!
What if you're retired, want learn how to draw more than stick figures but don't even know where to start?
Nothing fancy like robot /tiger/racecars spaceships.
Cartoon uppies, puppies, kittens, flowers, and sunshine sky's. Loved to watch Bob Ross but alas...
Post it please
Two "small" sections of her body? Most fantasy art I've seen, those sections are usually rather large! Lol
