This couldn't have come at a better time!!! I am attending tomorrow my second day at art class! I have started to take my art seriously as a career. Now how to better approach my class as the beginning of my career. I took notes^_^ Thank you!!
Wow so inspirational. I'm a 14 year old who loves drawing, i dream of getting into comics and i don't know maybe videogame concept stuff. I've always wanted to go to an art school because i thought that i need to to be an artist. Now i see the bigger picture and what to expect
Thank you so much for your advice! I've been writing a novel for almost a year now and I've been worrying lately about making the end perfect. Your advice about finishing being more important than perfection made me realize that I just need to write it and finish it - in a year I'll be better and will be glad I did. Thanks!
Jake, this is officially my first RUclips comment ever. I've watched a number of your videos and you do more than just inspire, you lead. I'm in school for something completely different right now, but because of one great professor (Chip Sullivan) my creativity has been renewed and your clear cut and concise direction are really helping guide me to become a better artist who produces. Thank you for all of the thought, time, and effort you put into each video, I really appreciate you.
Before I watched this video, I felt like I was a lost artist. However after watching this well-expressed and elaborated video of valid points and ideas, I feel like I have a little more of a clear direction of what to do now. Thanks for that Jake! Your videos are really so helpful and your art is just as inspiring and beautiful! Not only are you a good artist, but you are also a good person, and that I something I admire and aspire to be.
Your words really made me smile. I’m one of those artists that just make portfolio pieces even when it’s a class project/class work. Before I thought I was just overthinking and making myself work harder even though it wasn’t needed. Now, I feel as if all the work I’ve been doing has been put to use. Thank you for making me realize my true potential 🤠
I'm in my second year of university within the UK studying fine art. Your advice is the best and most solid advice that I have ever heard throughout my school, foundation year and first year of uni. Thank you.
I'm in 7th grade and i felt 100% inspired when you told the story of the girl that was light-years beyond the rest because she did 1 month sketchbook since my age because I am already doing it now and now i know it works! Great video!
Thank you thank you thank you this is so so helpful. I'm taking online classes for Illustration from an art college, and it's helping me loads but now I have more drive to finish my personal projects and keep drawing outside of school even when school is tiring.
“The artist ought first to exercise his hand by copying drawings from the hand of a good master. And having acquired that practice, under the criticism of his master, he should next practice drawing objects in relief of a good style, following the rules which will presently be given.” Leonardo
This is, hands down, the best art advice I've ever received. It helps so much to have some basic rules to follow and to hear that a successful person like yourself didn't have a "standard" art education. Thanks so much Jake!
Great advice for anyone seeking to better themselves as an artist, be they a kid just about to leave high school or a 32 year old hobbyist finally ready to follow their passion ;D Thanks Jake!
Awesome man, I don't draw anymore I use to do it when I was a kid and in high school. You make me want to go and buy and fill another sketch book and just keep drawing. And I will...... THANK YOU!!!
Jake you are such an inspiration! Thanks for the video, I am in college now and while I do my classwork I have so much more fun when I take the abstract principles and apply them to my own work. Keep up the good videos, best to you and your family.
Dang super inspiring! I'm currently majoring in illustration at SUU, so not too far from you, actually! I'm really trying my hardest to get a lot of mileage in, working in a couple of sketchbooks and doing studies virtually as well as class assignments. But the thing that definitely hit me from your video was your observation of students. I'm definitely invested in progressing myself, but I find it hard to engage further with my professors and get the most I can from my time with them. Definitely need to break out of my shell and start asking some more questions! Thanks for that realization and great artwork!
So true Jake . I got back into my art in 2016. I am glad I did. I am self taught and I am always learning .I am now 47 and my art style in two years have grown . So it's not only young people . I want to go freelance in art .so still learning
This sort of video is so useful to me. I've been looking for an answer to the question "how to improve my art" and the answer most artist I've found (on youtube / internet) give is draw draw draw, which I get, but draw what. Your four point answer is exactly what I was looking for - especially point number one. In one of your past videos you said if you want to get better at hands then draw 50 hands, I did, I am now much better at drawing hands, go figure! You're sort of a sudo mentor for people like me (art for personl reasons / non-professional) - videos like yours and the ones ***** post where your talk about your experience and give advice are awesome and so helpful. My request to add to the other you're getting is I really enjoy the "sketchbook" videos like you've done in the past where you go through your old books / stack. Also, plus one for the suggestion someone gave on showing us your bookshelf. Thanks for these videos, they're Grrrrreat!!
Thank you so much for this video! Im currently in the process of transferring majors and basically starting all over again because after being accepted into the animation department I realized that not only did I feel it was limiting me but I also felt that I didn't have a good enough foundation to move forward with it. Now I realize that I was being a student instead of the professional but that was also due to a lack of interest. I also realized I want to be able to do illustrations, concept work, storyboarding AND animation. So now I'm hoping to get accepted into the illustration department and I hope to get more out of it than the other major. Again thank you for the video and for providing kind of an insight into the more professional side of art. Ill definitely be applying those four tips that you were talking about and will definitely start drawing more! I'm a big fan of your work so watching you draw and hearing your advice really helps. By the way, GREAT work on the Rocket Raccoon series!!
I just came over from Will Terrell's channel, as he recommended checking out your art. Loved your drawing and the great advice (and, I love a good blooper, so, thumbs up, there at the end). I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos.
Thank you so much for a great video. I'm 14 and study art in high school here in the UK and I really took this video in and wrote down your tips as I feel they will most definitely help me out. I absolutely love comics and I am definitely going to work on one and FINISH it, lol I always go for perfection but after this I will know to finish. Thank you, I'm definitely subscribing to see what else you have to come.
The bit on being real about your competition was great. It sucks but I'm always grateful for the reminder :) Being the best artist at my sketch club, in my class or at indie alley at the convention isn't going to get me work. I have to get as good as the guys getting cheques if I want to get cheques, it's the only way. Must kept in front of mind!
gold advice! you really got to me with the idea that you shouldn't sit idle waiting for a school or an opportunity to educate yourself on art, you should make that opportunity for yourself. I think thats what makes the arts so unique compared to other fields of education; its based on initiative and your creativity that should be at least partially nurtured on your own. thanks again! awesome work btw :)
Thank you so much for this video! Its a HUGE help for an aspiring artist who's at her junior year in highschool and now has to make major decisions. :) :) :)
I wish I had this advice when I dropped out of SCAD for its crazy price and spent 2 yrs in stressful limbo on what I wanted to do with my career and life. After a year back at a university (which is geared towards fine art than industry work), I realize that I would rather study something else and go in my own direction with art. Figured that if I really wanted to do art professionally, I would make it there some how, with something to support me financially on the side. Really enjoyed this video. Looking forward to more of your wisdom.
I wrote to you on Facebook asking some questions and seeking some advice. This video covered a lot of the answers I was looking for. Very helpful, thank you.
I just randomly found this and loved it , definitely subscribing, this helped so much I have already been drawing everyday , but just knowing more about art education helps entirety , I am doing a commercial graphic design class this summer and digi pen video game design next year and I'm only a sophomore so I think I'm on the right track to song what I want to do XP
Thanks a million for the advice Jake! I'm following you on your other social media, so I look forward to seeing what you'll create next lol thanks again.
This is actually really helpful. I've been wondering what to do after the navy when I want to go back to college. But I've been talking to myself over and over - should I get my engineering degree or just jump straight into animation and illustration or whatever art colleges have to offer, or should I just do all of it and triple major or something ridiculous. Long story short, your video is just the conversation I need at this point in my life when all I am doing is small tattoo designs for people at work, when I don't have time to draw every day, but I'm stressing about what I'm going to do when I eventually do have time to take classes. So thank you.
I just finished a Bachelor in fine arts and unfortunately illustration was not only not even offered but was highly discouraged by the art school institution that I went to because illustration is not considered relevant. I was very unaware of their views of illustration and Instead students such as myself were forced to follow a more abstract discipline when it came to drawing and painting. I however did not abandon my dreams of wanting to be an illustrator but I am still happy i went because there were some tutors that supported me and despite all the strong negative feedback about my artistic choices I am now doing honours and I am in the middle of producing my first childrens book. Thank you Jake for being a huge inspiration to me your advice really helps.
Do you have any advice for balancing school and art time as a high schooler (11th grade to be specific)? I'd love to draw for multiple hours everday, but lately I've been feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork and when I sit down to draw I feel tired and uninspired (although I have been drawing every day). Oh and great video! I took notes alright :D
I don't know about Parker's advice, but my advice for you would be to create free time for art whenever you can. I know he says draw a few hours everyday, and I know how hectic life can get. Assuming you don't have a job, you could draw after doing the day's homework as you won't likely have any other pressing matters. You should also *always* take advantage of school holidays, and once you graduate high school, you'll have plenty of time.
+RainiDays Hi! Thanks for the question. I actually didn't too well in high school, so perhaps I'm not the best person to give advice on how to balance good grades with drawing a lot. HOWEVER, I know a lot of students who are able to do well in school and master and instrument, or a sport, or a craft. It comes down to priorities. Sometimes I would not go out with my friends so that I could draw. Sometimes I would miss a TV show, or deny myself video games because I wanted to draw. I almost always had a project so there was always a goal to finish it, and deciding on what I should spend my time on meant asking my self "will this help me accomplish my goal, or get me farther away from it?" You gotta do well in school, because you want to have as many options as possible after High School. So figure out your priorities, and make your time decisions accordingly. Also, listen to s0nicsilver.
Lol how did I forget to mention that vibrate read all of your stories in the flight books. XD your. I love your little robot story. Your one of the reasons I read comics and graphic novels.
HeyXD great piece love the Dragon! As to what you are saying about the animation and illustration course, I am on an a Ba animation and illustration course and I find that the ability to manipulate what the course gives you, in terms of briefs and projects, is relatively easy.yes of course you end up learning things you might not want to learn but down the line the skills the uni teaches u are gonna help you. And maybe this is just an English thing or just the way people around me think, the reason you go to uni is to discover what you want to do as a career, Yh u go Into the course having an idea of what you want to do, but as the course progresses and your skills evolve you usually end up wanting to be something completely different more suited to your own ability. I say that not only from my lack of experience in uni, as I'm only in my second semester of my first year, but from my uncles point of view and other people who have gone through the illustration courses. Just keep your mind open to job posabilities. Again amazing piece of work x
17:10 I have been doing that since last summer, and I have really noticed a different in my work already, been working on anatomy since the start of this year, and again, I have noticed a massive difference because of that too:) I haven't had a teacher for three years now, but I have been learning a lot on my own, the internet truthfully is full of a lot of really good resources for doing that:) Also been working on a project to create 1000 anatomy sketches, up to number 37 so far:)
I feel like I'm really behind in my art for my age. I've been drawing for years but feel like I still don't have a decent grasp of the fundamentals, I've just graduated university with a degree in graphic design - a course I hated but had to take for financial reasons. Now I just feel like I've spent the past four years learning how to become a bad designer rather than a better artist - I want to start earning money with my art but I don't feel good enough. I know I'll get there with time but it feels like a huge step backwards to graduate university and then have to go back and start studying the fundamentals again. I wish I had seen this video a few years ago, I would have had a much different experience at university if I had.
That kind of stinks...but it's never too late. I know an amazing artist at Blue Sky Studios that didn't start studying art until his late twenties. I think many people would've said it was too late for him, but he pushed on and it paid off.
Jake Parker It's very demotivating but at the same time I do know that I can do it with time so I just need to try and keep my spirits up. Videos like this definitely help, looking forward to seeing more of your work :)
This was extremely helpful, thank you for making this video. I think I've always wanted to be in the animation industry since I was a child. During the part where you said to fill a sketchbook every month, I got a little bit sad because I realized I haven't been drawing in my sketchbooks as much I used to - but then I remembered that, technically, I do "fill sketchbooks". I draw on pretty much any spare piece of paper or passed-back assignment that I get in class, usually just because my hands need something to do while listening to lectures, and other times because I have an itch to draw. I believe what I really struggle with is composition, and color theory. I suck at coloring. A lot. I'm fine at shading and tinting, but not coloring. I'm in an advanced painting class in high school right now, and it's helped me learn a lot about color, but not really enough. Composition is something that I'm getting much better at, and ever since I've gotten a digital camera it's helped me see with my own eyes what can make a composition exciting, and what can make it boring. I've got a long way to go, but feel like I'm taking the right steps. Your video shed a little light on that.
This is a great, applicable talk for artists in general, I feel. Of any sort. This is informative, motivating stuff! Thanks! Pretty great dragon/lady too!
Awesome video Jake!! I've finished my formal education but I've still found all your advice super useful and inspiring! Please keep up the videos. Also, nice dragon :D
It's funny how you say copy. I have been kinda of coping some of your work along with the work of a few other artists I really like for a while and it has really helped me develop my own personal style, and has made me a better artist as well. Great advice over all as well. thank you
Sorry for the long message in advance. Advice from the five addictions of success eh? Awesome! I love it and you are right about the sketchbook. I've been filling up a bunch of them every month. I agree with what you said about Art Schools, when I was in school everyone thought I was trying to be better than them but that wasn't the case. I was looking towards my heroes as you would say; Cheeks, Thomas Perkins, Creaturebox... of course you were one too. Thats how I became who I am. The more you guys create the more ambitious I get to get better. So I thank you for that. I came from a fine art school because the teachers were like that even tho I was in illustration When I told them I want to storyboard and character design. They told me we don't have that so as each assignment came I intertwined storyboarding and character designing with it. To get better, I took the life drawing classes they were giving me and everything and then turning that energy towards animation. It really did help out a lot with movement but it was difficult teaching oneself things like that. I'm glad I learned a lot from it. One thing I did want to ask while you were drawing that dragon. I remember when we talked, you were telling us about the creative bank that we should have and we should use it. While you were drawing that dragon. Were you tapping into this bank like remembering certain clothes which made you choose the character's clothes or the position of the dragon or the reason you chose to use a joust as her weapon? or is it like you've used so much of that creative bank where you dont really need to look at it anymore. Thank you for the video. Hope to see more!
Wow, Jeff. You're on the right track! There definitely was a lot of pulling from my bank account for this one. I also saw a cool outfit in one of my reference folders that inspired this girl's outfit. So it's a mix of pulling reference and applying what I've put in my creative bank account.
Those Kuretake pens are awesome!! I have the same as well as 2 of the red version. Super sharp to look at. I like their No.22 also as well as the (I think it's called) No. 40. U have a ridiculous number of different brush pens that I went a little kookoo getting different kinds to try at one point lol. There's a bamboo pen also that I foget what the name is but man its soooooooo smooth and so nice to use. Anywhos, Enjoy your rants and your artwork at the same time. Keep the videos coming!!!
I agree with Will Terrell it was great advice. It provides a clear journey of what is needed to move on. I have a follow up question. I did complete a comic book. I sketched it, created the pages, worked it up in Illustrator, and PhotoShop, and created the pages in InDesign. Every time I open it I see things I need to work on. Do I keep working on it...or do you think I should show it to someone in the industry? I did show a book dummy and finished art work to a art director. She gave me great advice and told me to make the changes. I'm reworking that but in the back of my mind I loved doing the comic book. It's manga style and I really enjoyed working on it. So the question...once we finish something but it's not perfect (because I'm constantly getting better) what do we do with it?
Cheryl Eklund Share it! It's a snap shot of where you were when you created it, and since you don't have anything new to show how awesome you are now you should at least show how awesome you were then. Then, when you make something new, share that. And people will see your trajectory.
Awesome video Jake! Awesome art! Great advice! Thank you so much for putting the time into sharing your knowledge and experience with the world. I love watching your videos and sharing them with my kids. One not quite related question. Can you show a close up of the image you have behind you with Boba Fett next video? Curious is it yours or another artists work?
Hello! I just wanted to add a suggestion for something you could possibly make a video on your different drawing styles (if you have more than one) I really like to see what one artist is capable of when it comes to that kind of thing... so yea. Just putting it out there. Thanks!
Hey Jake! I really enjoyed the discussion and drawing in this vid! Keep up the vids and remember if you need another inspiration to keep up the youtube videos just ask me. I'll be glad to do it again.
Also, I was wondering if you could show us around your bookcase to some of the best art book resources you know of? There are so many nowadays, I always wonder which ones people gravitate towards.
Hi Jake, I wanted to ask if you have any book recommendations for each one of the foundational subjects (composition, perspective etc.). And of course, thanks for all those videos; I have put them on my daily schedule and I've got to tell you they are very much appreciated!
Ugh, I really live school the "Student" way. I just can't bring myself to really enjoy it now there is a period where we start animating which is brilliant. I like that a bit but I want to be a professional artist it doesn't matter what side I get on but I wanna spend my days drawing and at school I am getting allot of distractions. I rather have a job at like my local pet shop and work on my drawings the rest of the time. And school is really tiring even so that I don't really feel like drawing or go for a jog to keep my health up. I don't know what to do really.
I'm still on 10th grade but I wasn't able to go to arts, because my school only has the science and humanities areas. I'm a bit scared about the future because I don't know what to do with it. Most of the stuff I learn is online.
I took notes in my sketchbook since I didnt have time to find paper. I feel like I learned a lot. I copy some artists once in a while and I figure draw sometimes, but I dont have a sketchbook only for copies, I put them in my normal sketchbook and then write "COPIED" next to each drawing I copied. :P
I'm good at drawing and stuff but at the moment the only art supplies I have are HB pencils and erasers. So I was wondering what are the names of the tools you used in this video, like that black pen you used.
Will Terrell sent me here.
I always love it when an artist not only draws but also teaches and shares good and important ideas. :)
Nice video.
This couldn't have come at a better time!!!
I am attending tomorrow my second day at art class!
I have started to take my art seriously as a career.

haha! Thanks.
Nice conversational style!

Thanks for all your advices Jake!!!! and of course for your art!!!!!! :)
Amazing talk , advice ,n also yr drawing ❤️❤️ love from India .
I almost always had a project so there was always a goal to finish it, and deciding on what I should spend my time on meant asking my self "will this help me accomplish my goal, or get me farther away from it?"
You gotta do well in school, because you want to have as many options as possible after High School. So figure out your priorities, and make your time decisions accordingly. Also, listen to s0nicsilver.
I might know. you might get homework that includes drawing new things and you can draw in break time. I hope this helps you.
+RainiDays I feel the same way as well :'(

That was so much more helpful than I expected. I feel like I've been told these things before, but not in such a solid way. I have to say THANKS.
Thanks for the advice and the inspiration. A sketchbook to fill every month - I have a new New Year's resolution :)
good speech. I wish I could watch it before my education so I could have more clear view how I should get to be professional.
17:10 I have been doing that since last summer, and I have really noticed a different in my work already, been working on anatomy since the start of this year, and again, I have noticed a massive difference because of that too:)
I haven't had a teacher for three years now, but I have been learning a lot on my own, the internet truthfully is full of a lot of really good resources for doing that:)
Also been working on a project to create 1000 anatomy sketches, up to number 37 so far:)
Jake Parker
It's very demotivating but at the same time I do know that I can do it with time so I just need to try and keep my spirits up.
I wouldn't mind a 45 min video, I'd love to see your full pencil to ink process
I listen to these talks while learning illustrator they are really helpful
Great ideas and advices so thank you for your time
This is a great, applicable talk for artists in general, I feel. Of any sort.
This is informative, motivating stuff! Thanks!
Pretty great dragon/lady too!
Great advice thanx Jake
Awesome video Jake!! I've finished my formal education but I've still found all your advice super useful and inspiring! Please keep up the videos. Also, nice dragon :D
It's funny how you say copy. I have been kinda of coping some of your work along with the work of a few other artists I really like for a while and it has really helped me develop my own personal style, and has made me a better artist as well. Great advice over all as well. thank you
Well done Jake! Great advice. Much of it applies to other fields as well. I tell kids the similar things when they ask me about making video games.
Thanks for all the advices!! you have been a great teacher mrjake!! :D that dragon looks awesome!! :D
I just needed of these advices, thank you so much Jake.

Great suggestions, thank you a lot for sharing them!
wow i love this info thx so much ive been drawing a ton and ive gotten better
hayy man, you are really inspiring me.. hope can practice all the days..
Inspiring as always! Love the "bloopers" on the end too. ;)
Good advices! I wish I had such advice about 45 years ago 🤔 But okay it's never too late
Great great advice!
A really good commentary. Finishing is huge.
Ur advices are awesome !
Great Advice!
Hello! I just wanted to add a suggestion for something you could possibly make a video on your different drawing styles (if you have more than one) I really like to see what one artist is capable of when it comes to that kind of thing... so yea. Just putting it out there. Thanks!
Cool informative conversation, and a badass drawing. Loved it!
thank you for all the info! Real useful.
I needed this so badly! Thank you!!!
One of my favorite drawings and videos!
That's a good idea. I should do a couple book reviews. Noted!
thank you so much. this really opened my eyes!
this is great!!! Im learning soo much!
Thank you so much!
Great video, and great advice!
Hi Jake, I wanted to ask if you have any book recommendations for each one of the foundational subjects (composition, perspective etc.). And of course, thanks for all those videos; I have put them on my daily schedule and I've got to tell you they are very much appreciated!
Awesome :) thanks!
Thank you for this!
That's probably just as good.
Mei Egoshi me too, haha. If I ever copy something I usually write something like "*referenced" next to it
Will was right! Great advise for young artists!
I'm good at drawing and stuff but at the moment the only art supplies I have are HB pencils and erasers. So I was wondering what are the names of the tools you used in this video, like that black pen you used.
