Your transparency and honest expression of personal goals and fears is balm for all of us artists regardless of genre. I'm not into comics creation (though I love them) but I can identify with all the things you talked about: Learning, the big elusive project, the side personal project fun stuff, the fears of being good enough, etc. etc. I watched to the end nodding my head the whole time, then hit the subscribe button. You're waiting to do the "epic" project while simultaneously creating an "epic" body of work. Well done and inspiring. Thanks!

Its amazing to hear you talk about your struggles with doing your own stories. I feel you. Its like you're speaking whats in my brain year after year. I'm glad to see you boldly going forward and following your passion. I am certain your faith will be rewarded. I know I'll be behind you. Keep up the amazing work man, and thank you for sharing your journey.

I'm so excited and scared for inktober. Scared probably sounds weird but the idea of inking for 31 days straight both excites and terrifies me. Usually the sign of a good challenge.

Hahaha you just made me laugh with you "are you still listening?" comment around the end of you video. It's really interesting to hear you "talk to yourself" while you talk to your audience because I think that's genuine words coming directly from deep inside your mind, your artist's fears and longings. Thanks for sharing, your work and thoughts are really inspiring and encouraging, you have a new loyal fan :)

I started doing Inktober in 2013 after being dismissed from an internship. It was a good way of keeping me from thinking bad things and just focusing on working on my art. I created some characters, which I still revisit each year, trying to unite them into a story. I like to call them my personal project, although I still haven't done as much as drawing them and trying to figure out a style that works for whatever I'm gonna make with them in the future.
For me, the coolest thing about Inktober, besides finding awesome artists, is to create the habit of drawing daily, even if it's a small drawing. And in inking even the smallest of the drawings, I think my "fear" of ink started to go away.
As for the content of the video itself, it's outstanding the consistency of your work and draftsmanship. There's obviously high improvement in your technique, but you can still say that a drawing from 2009 and a drawing from 2014 are made by you.
And just so you know, I think that there's no way a graphic novel created by you can become a failure, imo! :)
    Thanks for sharing so much!

I am thinking after watching the whole video that I still cannot believe how amazing your inking is and how many things your are able to draw. I am thinking that I am sad that I have neglected my sketching muscles and that I have not been dedicated to sketching. I have always been unsatisfied with my sketches so I always gave up on doing it all so I never finished even one sketchbook. But after much inspiration from you and your wonderful illustrations I have purchased a new sketchbook and am taking part in Inktober 2017!!
Thank you for being such an honest and dedicated artist!

I've never found something that's motivated me so much. I'm a young artist, only sixteen.. Honestly I thought since I wasn't to an impressive level in art yet I wouldn't be able to improve enough to ever make art a Career. A lot of voices around me, telling me that Art shouldn't ever be something that you go after for a career. That I'll just end up broke with no pay. The fact that the idea of being unable to make money pushed me away from becoming an artist saddens me. But after watching this video, seeing all the art you've created, and hearing many wise words; I'm more then inspired. I'm going to push myself to create more, and keep practicing now. I know I need to stop focusing on making the best, biggest project and putting so much of my time in it for just one drawing, and draw more, quicker and practice drawings to improve. I really hope to become as good as you one day, and I sincerely apologize for the long post! I doubt many will read.

Just to start, I found your art a few years ago and ever since i have been trying my hardest to keep up with what you put out.
Every video I watch I'm inspired by. Your motivation to progress through anything is just fuel to my own fire. Hearing that your "one an only" project is the one that is driving you up a wall is relieving to some degree. it also made me think about what i have done to counter that same feeling.
For years I have been working on a story, its been my life. I felt that since I dedicated so much time to it, that i just couldn't ruin it, i couldn't rush it. I started to write short stories to let my brain rest on something that was so large. Each story I wrote or plotted out just didn't strum the notes that play well to my ears. They were just "flirts" as you used. but I felt like if I turned away from those stories I would have nothing done at all. I had one story though that just flowed amazingly compared to the rest. I never have to worry about it. I can write it and it just flows out of my fingers. So I tried to figure out what made that one so special compared to the others. I realized that it ties to the large story that I have been working on for so long. Once i realized that, I began to write more "side stories" that connected this large world created for my "one and only" story. It help me develop things that i wasn't sure of and scared to ruin. but i felt safe that if it didn't go the way i wanted, i could scrap them and not ruin my "one and only."
So in frank terms, maybe the best thing to do to get you back on track of doing that graphic novel is to draw or write side stories. Ones that keep you in the same realm of creativity but don't tell the story you love just yet. At least keep you creating what you truly are head over heals for.
if we keep it going with metaphors like relationship terms. the ones you love and want to marry fart in front of you. Which makes you fear them less. You care about the little things like what shows they watch, or the books they read. but when we look at those things together are heart flutters and it can kind of get scary. But when you break them down and write the flaws, farts, and scars of your story; you start to relax because you know more about them.
i hope that can help, considering how much help and inspiration you give your fans!

I will tell you what I think! I think you're being very honest, and that's probably the best thing you can do to help other artist. Self evaluation is part of the growing process, and it's a beautiful thing to behold. This video has helped me by getting my gears turning. During the course of this video, I thought of several things I want to improve on. I've also identified some of the facades, and excuses I create that slow my progress. I have some new goals now, and I'm excited to go for them! I try not to get myself down when I mess up a drawing, but hearing you say that it's okay to do so helps too :) It can be difficult to speak the truth, especially about one's own shortcomings. I've got mad respect for you, man, mad respect!

if you get down on your art... well. I guess I'm in excellent company. Thanks for not only sharing these inktober drawings, but sharing the whole idea of it with the world. I personally have been stretched and grown as an artist far beyond what I would have without it. Seriously. I need structure and accountability, because I often get paralyzed with perfection. Thanks for both your encouragement and example in person as well as your online presence. You've helped me become a better artist. Thanks Jake.

Fun Fact: I live in Portland, OR. and one day I went to a local comic shop where Mike Mignola was doing a signing and I asked him if he would sign my copy of The Amazing Screw-On Head. I told him as he was signing it that it was one of my favorite stories he's ever done. He paused and looked up at me and said, "It's my favorite too." He looked so happy about that statement. I'll never forget that.

Your work is inspiring, thank you! I'd like to experiment with inks and try my hand at mixed media.. Quite often people will ask me, "I can't draw". My response is, everyone can draw, one just needs to put it to practice.
In my school years I was always getting top marks for my work, projects in particular. My teachers would always comment on my presentations, illustrations and drawings. When my father pulled me out of school and sent me to work... thats another story, It wasn't until later in life that I was free of all responsibilities and actually dos something about what "I" wanted in life.
So here I am at 53, just about to finish my diploma in graphic design. I've done works of art and sold them over the years.
I'm now on another chapter of my life, caring for my partner with cancer and so my work will get second base for a while. I'm not going to let this control my life, I NEED to learn and especially create!!! I'm getting there slowly.
I envy people of your generation. I love challenges, check out the story of Lorraine Loots and her world of miniature art. Postcards for Ants is an ongoing painting project by Cape Town artist Lorraine Loots who has been creating a miniature painting every single day since January 1, 2013

There was this Finnish actor, who had a "bread work" and a "bun work" - the bread work was the one he did to support himself and his family, and that was acting, and the "bun work" was what he did for the fun of it, as a hobby kind of, and that was baking - he had an actual bakery, he got up every morning at 4-5 to bake, just for the fun of it :-D
And I think that's what you need to do. See the illustrations as your "bread work", and the comic book as your "bun work". You don't combine it with economics. It's your hobby, your love, your leisure" time activity, you do it because you want to, and you don't do it to sell or to please anyone but you. I'm pretty sure you can divide your days to get both jobs done without suffering economically because of it. Creative workers can have free time and hobbies :-D
And I am sure it will be great and people will want to buy copies and you end up getting it done and getting some money from it, too.
And it's 2 years ago when you did this video, so I'm also pretty sure all this si totally irrelevant and obsolete by now :-D

i always really like listening to your thoughts, this half hour video was great!

The thing he says about the comics applies to film as well for indie film makers, as James once put it: "You don't do a film because of the money, you do it because you're obsessed" I think that can apply to any non mainstream art, if it's not profitable there's really no reason to do it but people still do it out of passion to get their idea out there and I find this both tragic and inspiring.

18:00 "... If it fails, then it doesn't matter because I didn't put my heart and soul into it. It was just something fun I was working on." I feel the need to describe my own experience regarding this sentiment about sharing your comic... in that, I never really thought about this, when putting out my own heart and soul comic. I never thought about the failure that COULD come, i.e. people's rejections, and how I'd feel about others not liking my heart and soul's efforts. I kind of just jumped in, once I decided I'd do this epic thing. As such, I've gotten negative feedback from people where it really hurts when they DON'T value it. I never quite emotionally prepared myself for this rejection when it happened... and it has at times felt like a solo (sola in my case, haha!) battle to just keep on when I don't have that validation. I agree with what Will Terry has said in one of his videos that we artists need validation of our work. Art's value is in giving and sharing it, 99% of the time. So... I think it's brave to put your heart and soul comic out there, given there's just not a whole lot of reassurance that you'll get what you need when you do. Some may not like it. Many may not support you with it via money. But what I find is that, if your work is important to you, you must share it with the faith that it will attract people who see its value.

And thanks, Mr. Parker for sharing yourself, as well.

I watched all the way through and couldn't help but relate with a lot of the feelings you went through as you evolved into the amazing artist you've become. Your early art is breath-taking in my opinion and the criticism you put on it really woes me, and as you progressed over the years, I can't help but hope that I too will advance this much through repeat and practice. Granted my current skill level is MUUUUCH lower than any of the drawings presented here, but it's nice to see that even the great artists of our time go through the same crap all of us normal folks do. Thank you for inspiring us all with this challenge.

I've tried to do Inktober for a couple years now, but it wasn't until this year, that I have actually been able to do one everyday. Mostly I think it is because this year, I have used Inktober in all of my Art classes (this is my first official teaching contract and I was allowed to shape the entire Art program). I am teaching grades 8-12 Art and for our Inktober project, I am using it for the most part, to allow my students to familiarize themselves with India ink and other Ink products.
I assigned this project as a way to get them to not be so precious with their work and to get the confidence they need to work with Ink, and of course, holding them accountable to make as much art as possible. I have changed some of the rules (I hope that's ok) so that it meets specific learning outcomes and so that they can still meet the required sketchbook hours needed (roughly 7.5 hours a month).
I digress, I feel the reason I have been able to accomplish the goal of working on an ink piece everyday, is that the students see me working and see the work I am making everyday (even if they are just small ones) and it's motivating to them. So in a sense, their motivation to push their skill further, is in fact, motivating me.

Hey Jake, watched the whole thing, and I want you to know something. You said something in a video you did in the past that you can't keep putting things off or they will never get done. I remind myself this everyday so that I can get my own project up and going. You have to listen to your own advice, and just get started and start going on it. We as artists know that we will never reach the level of perfection that we strive for, but if we never "DO" then we will stay right where we're at. You have to get this project of yours off the ground bud. Your advice has helps so many, maybe its time you take your own advice friend. Good luck, and keep it up! Joey Ro-

It was really reassuring just to know someone else is struggling with ideas too and even just hearing my own thoughts out loud really from a different perspective. How lucky we all are that we now live in an age where technology let's all of artists have a chance to learn and grow from each other!? I love it! Jake, absolutely love this video and the progress through Inktober!
I felt really bad at around 17:00 with you talking about the project that scares you to start. I know the feeling you're talking about, "saving" a project for when you feel your personal skill will be up to the task, and the problem is that means we'll never be up to the standard we want it to be. I'm glad you're committing yourself to it, though. Just know that your talent is amazing, thousands of people think so, and we know you can make the best finished product out of it. You're not going to fail, it's going to be great. Looking forward to seeing more of it, I appreciate that it has a realistic fantasy style that pushes your personal abilities more!

Hi Jake, thanks for posting this. Great video as always. As a wannabe illustrator I'm always interested in seeing/hearing other people's processes and struggles. Not great for you - but reassuring to know that even at your level you still have doubts about your art. I think it's easy on social media to see all the amazing stuff that illustrators and artists are doing and get paranoid about the state of your own skills. Sometimes hearing that others have doubts is just enough of a reassurance to get you back on track. Hope that makes sense.
I'm aiming to do the full Inktober this year, after dabbling for the last couple, and like your first one, I'll be trying to up my skills with a brush pen. I love my Pentel pocket brush, but I still find it scarily tricky to use.
Best of luck with the BIG project, looking forward to seeing more of it.
    Cheers,
    Rob

I watched until the end and I completely can understand your struggles and goals for the future. I think most of us have this one big project that really means the world to us, independent if it's a comic like in your case, a platform to inspire more people to live their dreams like in my case and many more. From experience I just can say that every side project if we see it in this moment or not will help us with the big one as well. Because we already tackle some obstacles that might occur later on, and learn to start and finish projects. If you currently feel like tackling the big guy. Do so! But don't get discouraged if a new side projects comes along in half a year. It think its right and important to make ourselves do the important things but if we totally block at some point, a side project might help us back on track. I wish you the best of luck and success and will follow your progress. Also I want to join InkTober for the first time this year and it scares me a lot^^ I love lines but I'm afraid of big black areas on a page. It always looks great when others do it but I just wanna run away. So October will be very exciting for a lot of us. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, they help and inspire me a lot! Many thanks, Sandra

Found out about inktober in the middle of October last year. I also found I was essentially doing it by "default." I started sketching with ink as early as 2009, then switched to mainly ink in about 2012. Thank you so much for letting me know "inktober". Unfortunatly its nearly over right now, but I fell in love with the idea to make a drawing a day... Always had the idea in my min to start it myself, but - i feel a little lazy if I noone knows about it. So Intober is a great think to get in touch with others and exchange experiences and show your continus work for a period of time.
Thank you so much for your honest words. I started drawing years ago and couldnt imagine, that artists good as you are frightened about projects, have fear to start it. Also I found myself in what you said about marrying your project : ) And doubts that somebody could like it... thats exactly what stands between me and drawing. Putting expectations to high, be your hardest enemy, push yourself and lettin go of the fun... that whats happaned to me.
Your video encoraged me, to go on and start my project.

Oh, thank you SO MUCH for this video! This is going to be my first year participating in Inktober, and I'm REALLY excited about it. To hear you talk about "the project" was so relieving, to know that even an established pro can have their dream project that they're afraid of failing, I can really identify with that! Thank you for the inspiration, and I can't wait for your inktober drawings this year!

This was so great! Not only is your art fantastically amazing, but it was nice to hear what you had to say about balancing projects & the struggle between them. I certainly get where you're coming from. I am currently in the place where I mostly want to do the "big passion project," but I am constantly coming up with side projects that I get excited about too. Funny thing is, the big one started as a side project I was going to use as a way to get better so that I could do ANOTHER project! haha! OY! I think right now though, I still need to do little tiny projects and exercises (like Inktober?!) to hone my skills and make sure I've got the fundamentals down before I jump fully into the big project. But I still want to develop it as well! Cant' give up! I just need to work out a better balance between paid work, exercises, side projects, & the big project. Watching this video helped me get some new perspective & also reminded me that I'm not the only one who wrestles with this stuff! Thanks for sharing!!!

I participated in Inktober for the first time in 2013 and had an absolute blast doing it then and in 2014 - definitely looking forward to it this year as well.
It's sort of comforting to know that even great big awesome artists like you also feel nervous about starting on the important projects (though I suppose it's obvious that you would, really!). While side projects are great and all I take shelter in them far too often!

~31:00 -- I was just about to thank you for doing a long video like this one, and kind of afraid of asking you to do more, because you might not have the time to do this type of stuff more frequently...
But dude, Jake, mah man... We love your stuff, man. And actually, I was really surprised that you want to do some D&D-style (Tolkienesque, even) fantasy stuff! And now I'm anxious to see more! Though I'm also curious to see what goes behind that, you know? What goes on behind creating the characters, the environments, the plot. Including the stuff that you may eventually cut, reject, change, etc. If you could do that, it would be, pardon the pun, *_fantastic!_*

Ur art is really amazing, u have such imagination with a lot of ur drawings and its very inspiring. I only just heard about Inktober and I am so happy I caught it on the first day. I was hesitate about starting it because I wasn't sure if I could be inspired every day to do something. After what ur video and seeing how u have evolved over the years I feel more confident about doing it. There are some old characters I want to play with and hopefully they will inspire more out of me.
I hope you get to marry that comic one day, it looks like a beautiful story is just waiting to walk off the page. Can't wait to see what you do through out the month. :)

Your anxiety of for creating a graphic novel is pretty much what I'm dealing with. The struggle of not starting something because I feel I'm not ready, but I also know I can't use that excuse forever. I discovered Inktober this year after the fact, I decided to challenge myself to do the rest of November in the same format, for practice. Thanks for the video!

I don't know what to add, while I'm refreshing my portfolio, watching and listening while drawing here . . .
I'm just bonking my head with each page you turn, and even the ones you turn too fast! (arrrgh! :D ). I am just starting to watch all these fantastic videos that you and your colleagues have created. But . . . All your story ideas and drawings are soo well done, creative, cute, full of drama and emotion and the fun tech that goes with it all . . . I mean "each" idea for various stories and comics, just awesome!
I hope ALL come to fruition, and by the time they are published, I'm working in Films at some point to afford them ^_^.
I'm probably a few years older so it's been a hard road, but you are a great inspiration and you got this "kid at heart" moving forward with even more tools and mojo!
Thank you, and I do hope all your Comic Book dreams come true soon.

Mr. Jake Parker, thanks for posting this vid. What an inspiration. I'm fired up and ready to finally participate in InkTober this year. Watching this video made me realize that I only ever draw objects. Random things. I feel like I need to think more about stories. Sure its ok to practice with form, line weights, light and shadow, anatomy, etc. But one of the things I love about your work is that many of your sketches (even if a single image) hint at a story. They spark my curiosity and make me want to more. That is something that I rarely think about when I sit down to draw. So thanks for all of your great videos and thanks again for the inspiration.

You are incredible. Your work is astonishing, I just love pausing and seeing every little piece you've done. I'm participating in Inktober this year, but I'm so fresh of an artist haha. Sometimes when I see professionals like you I get a little downcast, but I'm learning to realize that you have years and years of experience under your belt whereas I only have around 13 years, not to mention several years of art block in between due to fears of carpal tunnel in my hand and other things.
I'm very thankful I found your channel. I'm planning to make a small comic on Pokemon and then soon a children's book to start and hopefully even make money off it. I also have a big project I've been scared to marry for years haha! I don't think I'm anywhere near ready though. I've rewritten it so many times.
I really hope I can fully recover from years of art block and finally decide that maybe I do want to do this, even if art in general is a side/independent thing, not something I'm looking to feed myself with.

I watched your video to the end and all I can say is WOW I just feel so inspire from this video alone.I'm won't do Inktober this year because I already had somethings planed but I'm defiantly subscribing and will give it a go next year. Also I liked what you said about being held accountable for projects so you don't give up on them and I think I'm going to do that with a small project.
