Every time I hear this song I cry. I have so much love and honor for our military! This song says it all. They've got so much courage and honor. God Bless you 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This song came out when I was 17 years-old, and a junior in high school. I'll never forget SGT. Barry Sadler singing this on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' that year. Little did I know I'd be fighting in Vietnam only 3 years later.
my grandpa was vietnamese and he served for the U.S army, when the United states called back all the troops he was still taken prisoner by the vietcong for 10 years, that may seem long but it’s true
@Chuck Fortier surly, you cant be that stupid/ desecrate our forces, "they are qualified to land an air craft'" Are you that stupid and dont recognise what those soldiers have done and achieved!!
My dad is a green beret and in the special forces. I hate it when people disrespect the military and our country. You know it's hard being a military child, you are constantly moving and switching schools and making new friends that don't stay with you forever. My dad deploys very often and sometimes I don't even know if he will come home :(
It’s hard, Emma, but your dad is an awesome man. Few like him. Know his mission in life is different than most, which makes him special. May you inherit his passion as we need strong kids like you to lead us.
I played this record so many times when I was a kid loved this song. Thank you all for your brave services to the men and women in all areas of military stay safe and come home guys
USMC vet here.. Wanted to give you guys a shout-out... Mad respect for the Green Berets... They came to Camp Pendleton once to train our Infantrymen on tactics and strategies. To say that our guys were left in awe and extremely impressed would be an understatement... Our Marine Raiders modeled much of our ITC course on what they learned from attended the Green Beret Q-Course... That in and of itself spoke VOLUMES because when designing the ITC course they sent the best Force Reconnaissance Marines to the Q-Course, BUDS along with a few other top notch schools.. From what I was told, your training was MUCH more valuable... Thanks for all that you do... Semper Fi!!
I served in Vietnam with the army in 1969 and was severely wounded that year. The Green Berets were not only BAD ASS, but some of the nicest guys I ever met. I salute all you men who wore a Green Beret, when wearing a 'beret' was VERY SPECIAL.
I was in the U.S. Army, but never in combat. Those brave soldiers who did make that greater sacrifice are owned a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid by the rest of us. Thank you for all you did and as others have said, God bless you always.

My dad was in the Navy during 'Nam, and then in the National Guard. he used to sing this song all the time when i was growing up. One of the things I love so much about this song is that it also honors the family of the person in the military, mentioning their sacrifice, because when a person signs up for the military, their whole family is an addendum on that contract. I never saw my dad happier than when he went to Jump School and earned his paratrooper wings. It scared the living daylights out of my mom because he didn't think to call her until he'd completed all his jumps. He passed away from Renal Cell Carcinoma due to exposure to Agent Orange on March 23,2017. We lost but a father and husband, but Heaven gained a sailor. I miss you so much,Daddy...sail on!

When I hear this song it’s a reminder of many things. When I was young there was this war that I saw every evening on the six o’ clock news. Before that time war was only in the movies for me. The Viet Nam war got into my life. The street I lived off of had five to six young men who grew up together, joined the army together, and they all but one died in that war. The street was very quiet without them in the years afterwards. My brothers best friend that was just a few years older than me joined up and went to Viet Nam. He was wounded and couldn’t recover enough to return to combat so he became an instructor in Fort Lewis Washington until the war ended. My little brother was drafted and went to the war as a truck driver. We worried about him but he finally came back. When your not part of a war like a soldier, you live with its remnants. The sadness of lost friends. Being a pen pal to my brother’s best friend while he was gone helped me get to know him. He’s gone now but I remember how proud he was of his army time. The Green Beret song came out of that war. It’s not the only song from that time. Every war has famous songs from each time period. RUclips is generous enough to share them all with us. These songs invoke a lot of feelings. They make you remember that time period. When John Wayne made that movie about the Green Berets I liked it. I loved that the song came with it. It may not feel important enough to call war songs part of our national consciousness. But it feels like it to me. The war was heavily protested at home. Vets were mistreated. Movies were later made to show the wars after effects. But through it all is this song. No other singer that I’ve listened to makes me feel the same as the original. Music lasts while the pain and sadness of war dims with time. Today we’ve just come out of another very long war. So far I’ve seen movies about it but no inspiring songs. We need one. This war looked like it started at home in the USA. But our enemies were out there in plain sight. They are still there.
looks exactly like here in august of 2021 our president and congress are hiding right now....can' wait to hear what brilliant words of wisdom are going to come out of their mouths next.

I worked out at Coors over 20 years with a former Green Beret that was in the original battalion that had their Green Beret's personally handed to them on the South lawn by JFK in 1961. This soldier was in Korea and shot down two Mig-15s with a 50 cal on a tank. He was always a paratrooper and when he had his chance to go to GB training he jumped at it. As a vet I will always remember this exceptional soldier. He was one of America's Best. All the Way George! God Bless.
yes. my grandfather was a sargent BRITISH GERKER. and he would have his team para shoot at midnight and early hour's to use knifes while the enemy were sleeping. he said the pistol or riffle grenades were the last resort. one noise and the whole lot would wake up. then they would just machete there way out to a boat or a safe position to be helicopted out. the special elite forces done for there politicians. all the best and take care.👍

A beautiful, touching song. Great movie with John Wayne. Greetings from Poland.
I worked out at Coors over 20 years with a former Green Beret that was
in the original battalion that had their Green Beret's personally handed
to them on the South lawn by JFK in 1961. This soldier was in Korea and
shot down two Mig-15s with a 50 cal on a tank. He was always a
paratrooper and when he had his chance to go to GB training he jumped at
it. As a vet I will always remember this exceptional soldier. He was
one of America's Best. All the Way George! God Bless.
+Barry Sullins Thanks for sharing that-your friend is exceptional

yes. my grandfather was a sargent BRITISH GERKER. and he would have his team para shoot at midnight and early hour's to use knifes while the enemy were sleeping. he said the pistol or riffle grenades were the last resort. one noise and the whole lot would wake up. then they would just machete there way out to a boat or a safe position to be helicopted out. the special elite forces done for there politicians. all the best and take care.👍
Peter McGlothin you twat
It has been my privilege and an honour to have met a few on my travels. They don't make too many like them. Long may it continue.
