      It is surely interesting though I do not personally appreciate the Drake aesthetic. I do have a chain to obtain one set for $165 just in case. But this relies on the Hull-B released and not going over 235 in value.

      I think you are spot on. While the ship is actually a LESS radical design than the caterpillar, until (and IF) the old one gets interesting modules the large one is just a huge leap ahead in terms of function.
      3x the cargo (that makes sense, it looks like 3 caterpillars glued side by side), a huge front ramp, a ginormous open top (that closes after cargo is loaded or unloaded), well positioned tractor beam turrets... it's just a ship made for the game SC is shaping up to be, not a simple artistic asset that looks cool but doesn't have the game's mechanics in mind.ile the ship is actually a LESS radical design than the caterpillar, until (and IF) the old one gets interesting modules the large one is just a huge leap ahead in terms of function.

      Light carriers just fit so well the role a group of friends may want fulfilled during a play session: not too big, can carry any combination of ground vehicle for a total equal to the Ironclad's required crew or greater, can bring any fighter anywhere, just park it behind a hill when not in use, really a big ol' box of wonders... I really don't think we need anything bigger than this, that anything bigfer would ever get filled to capacity, but we alreast did, and CIG already committed to even more stupid bif stuff as some crazy people actually bought them so I suppose we will eventually.

    I'm hoping that the assault still keeps the retractable roof, so it is easier to load in damaged vehicles. also, at 1:27 it shows a shot-up Pisces in the cargo area. I'm guessing it's there for repairs, making the show-cased ship the assault variant, and the roof is open.

    I'm probably going to CCU from the Cat to the Fatterpillar.
    Given my intention is to solo this ship that could be a bad choice, but in high-sec there shouldn't be any downside, the Fatterpillar is just 3X cargo capacity and double range, and for low-sec the Cat is already way too much ship for solo play.
    12 years ago my original ship was the Freelancer when it was supposed to be "small" jump capable, ever since that got reversed I've been trading up to larger ships, meanwhile always hoping and praying that someday we'll actually get an exploration focused "small" cargo ship.

    While the base version's ramp will be wide enough for most vehicles, I think the problem is the height. According to pictures and information on the website, the assault's ramp had to be altered to fit the Nova tank, and looks to be less restricted in height according to the pictures. So the base version might not be capable of taking the nove or Ballista.

    In the video/images on the Hull C, it showed an arrow or other small ship on the grid. So yes, you can land a ship on the cargo grid, and it should stay put. It is not a landing pad/hangar. So do not expect any services. The main point will be for small ships will need transport to distant locations. My question will be how big of a ship can it carry? If the height will allow for a vulture or prospector, you now have a mobile base for those professions. A salvager/miner could push farther into space far away from stations to work. I can also see this ship having use in base building.

    The Caterpillar: A modular ship that can run multiple purposes in your fleet.
    The Ironclad: A cargo runner that can also act as a pocket carrier with its size.
    Ironclad Assault: Pocket Carrier that sacrifices a little cargo space for more gun following the Engineer mantra.
    It isn't so much a Caterpillar killer as it is a proper cargo ship. The Caterpillar is meant to have different sections to play with, like a medical module, a dragonfly hangar, passenger module, etc. It's a jack of all trades.
    The Ironclad is Drake getting serious about cargo.

    I like the Liberator as well as the Ironclad, they are both very good ships, similar, but not the same goals.
    With Pyro on it's way and more systems coming, a ship like the Ironclad is almost a must have for a Firefly/Serenity nomadic style of play. Having a very flexible jack of most trades, depending on what you put inside the 1500 SCU hold is great. Whether it be a fighter for bounties, a ROC/Prospector/Vulture a C8R/Nursa or any combination. Myself, I want to do the long haul cargo runs and while doing that, explore opportunities to discover derelicts, rescue others, scan for resources etc. The Ironclad has extreme long range, 4 large shields and armored. I really hope CIG goes the rout of individual bunk rooms like the Corsair. The Ironclad could also be a mobile central hub for a land base, that can be moved from one resource rich environment to another. I feel that I will be able to pick up almost any mission in my journeys through the Deep dark of the verse.

      The issue is that CIG had explicitly mention in the past that you will LOSE money with combat capitals, so it's no guarantee this interaction will make sense :/

    • @Stormyy6310
      @Stormyy6310 2 месяца назад

      @@Space-Tech I think they probably meant that if you use these ships for big battles as they're intended to or if you just roam around doing nothing you will lose money. Idoubt CIG would make a ship where you always lose money because otherwise no one would be using it, besides the Polaris is not actually a capital ship as far as I'm aware, it is a sub-capital ship, and the entire purpose behind its creation is that it is meant to be a cheaper and faster alternative to the Idris. I think ships like the Javelin or Idris will cost more money to operate than they'll bring in but I absolutely imagine that if a small org uses a Polaris to do all sorts of jobs from bounty hunting to smuggling and especially piracy it will be profitable. I also think that in the devs' minds these combat capitals will require an escort comprised of other ships and if so I can totally see why they're saying the expenditure will be higher than the reward, on the other hand for a Polaris you're basically running the Polaris and the fighter it can accommodate in its hangar bay, you don't need escorts because the Polaris is fast as hell and is supposed to disengage quickly if the situation is not favorable (that's why it is a corvette)

    Very nice detail and enjoyable summery of the Ironclad!
    I did find some incorrect information given at some places, which I will list right here:
    2:00 : The Size 5 Turret sits on the bottom of the ship, which has its door pointed out towards the cargo underneath the observation deck.
    The gun on the front right is a Size 3, same as the remote turrets on the back of the ship. This is also visible in the weapon size vs how big the turret is. Size 3 are either the same length as the turret or a tiny bit longer. This turret also goes from a Dual Size 5 to a Quad Size 5 on the Assault version.
    3:40 : These outdoor "smoke break" balconies are on both side of the ship. Which is great. When it comes to the cargo claim, there will be a noticeable gap in the middle of the cargo bay to walk back and forth inside of the cargo bay, as well as the ladder on the front left of the ship taking you to the walkway above the cargo. This can be seen in 2 of the images of the ship. 1 being the 3D sales page interior mesh with the 4x 32 SCU boxes not reaching the middle of the ship, and the other one from a birds eye angle looking down into the cargo bay area as that one also features 32 SCU boxes.
    3:50 : The bottom floor is entirely cargo and some components., Second floor is engineering and docking collar, while third floor is Habitation, Observation deck, and Command Module.
    4:40 : Jump Drives are an add-on to all Quantum Drives and are the reason why all Quantum Drive Lockers are bigger than the drive itself, as the physical component does not exist yet (Except in certain circumstances like in the Hercules). There is also nothing stating it wont have one, as it isnt stated on any ship that they have or not EXCEPT for the Driver Pod of the Endeavor, which most likely will be changes when the ship enters its whitebox.
    9:30 : While the Sales page didnt mention a retractable roof, it is quite common for CIG to miss out on repetitive information, even when there is multiple repetitive information.
    THAT SAID, the speculation is warranted, as skipping out on this very valuable CORE detail of the Ironclad is a buy or not question for many.

    As a Kraken owner, my interest in the Ironclad is conditional. It may prove to be an excellent support ship for my flagship, but I already get all the loaners it would offer, and likely will be loaned an ironclad in the time between its launch and that of the Kraken. On that day, it will depend on how well the Baby Kraken Battle Barge has served.
    I do hope that the top of the IC Assault will have the openable roof, a signature feature of its sister ship. Should it have that, and the repair/refuel ability help ships that land inside it, the interest explodes and it's nearly a necessary compliment. Time (and dev answering Q&A) will tell.

    think the armored variant is more a drop off and then get out of there unless theres a damaged vehicle. Which they will get up and running again and then loaded and back out again. So feel its a vehicle dropship. The normal variant has so many options to transport and how.

  • @JL-rj9fl
    @JL-rj9fl 2 месяца назад +1

    It's interesting to see the different approaches to landing ships. The M2 is a dropship like the assault (though I'd argue both should drop behind the front line). The M2 should get you in (and out) much, much faster and more efficiently for more rapid/strategic deployments. I don't think I'd use the Assault unless I was in a large battle and had extra people to help protect it. I feel like the Assault is extra vulnerable during the transition to and from space to ground. It'll be a big, slow, clumsy target. I haven't pledged for either, but I like the variety and choice on offer. The Assault almost feels like a portable FOB (forward operating base).

      @JL-rj9fl 2 месяца назад

      @@Space-Tech This is true, it looks like it will be able to take a real beating. As dropships go, I think I like the Liberator more because you can take extra ships with you in addition to two Novas. Plus, you keep the cargo space if you need it, and you can tailor your air support to the mission at hand. I can't wait to see these big dropships - so many cool concepts on the way for us. :)

    Regarding Nova and similiar sized vehicles - I think only the reinforced ramp heavy dropship will be able to carry this class of vehicles. The standard cargo gains the advantage of the retractable roof and tractor beams that the Assault loses for its particular traits. This is my speculation on the Ironclad. The Hercules has the flexibility of tank sized vehicles AND cargo but with lower capacity and no tractor beams though much better agility in atmospheric flight.

    Do you think the cargo variant will have a deep enough cargo bay to store a Vulture? It looks to me to be about 6 SCU high so I think so, but not sure.

      I think the metrics make it technically possible, but until we know more about fit=sits, I'd be cautious believing that

  • @Senekha86
    @Senekha86 Месяц назад

    I dont think a Nova will fit because the assault is marketed to haul Novas around, the normal variant isnt. There are official mockups where you can see that on the normal variant the entrance has a metal plate at the top, lowering the max height of the entrance. Its missing on the Assault... So I dont think they limit the vehicles via weight ("reinforced ramp") but via height.

    The assault could be amazing….but if it doesn’t have a retractable roof, it’s going to be one the fastest melted ships in CiG’s history as it will be notably less utilitarian than the Liberator.

    The S5 is mostlikely the bottom turret... And assault images seem to have 7 turrets but only listed to have 6. Mostlikely the 2nd top turret on the nose is extra or missing from stats.

    When I saw this, I thought CIG was making a smaller version of the Kraken, probably a proof of concept for the Kraken and what it could contain intenally, especially when I read that the Ironclad would have its own bespoke repair and rearm capability. I think that when they fully finish this ship, all they need to do is to enlarge it even more and then add the external flight deck to finally be able to.... release the KRAKEN! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Ironically, the Ironclad is too small for me. If it had two or three cargo modules rather than just the one, it would be an efficient hauler/pirate ship. And... then it'd look like an oversized Caterpillar... I guess gameplay reasons take their toll in the SC Verse. If I'd go for an Ironclad, it'd be the classic version. The Assault edition messes up the neat cargo hold by segmenting it for sakes of servicing vehicles. That's already enough of a detractor. Who needs dozens of jumpseats? That makes the Assault a niche product for planetside weekend raids. Sadly.

    If you are using the Ironclad for piracy and have to use the turrets you are doing it wrong. That is taken care of by the escorts. Dragging in a dead ship’s cargo with the tractor beams will be so good. Loading a C2, even with the bigger boxes is a pain in the A

    I am not sure about this one... the problem is that I know how CIG operates by now. If they want you to use a ship in a specific way they will make sure that is the only way that actaully works. If it is not the hangar doors, then there are pistons, or struts, or airlocks or whatever that keeps anything except what CIG envisioned from entring the ship...
    My guess is that is what will happen to the ironclad too. CIG have not envisioned this as a spaceship hangar ship. You may be able to get picies and auroras in, but my guess is that the height of the hangar or different artificial means of keeping bigger ships out will be in place.
    Then there is this bullshit about ground assault... Ground vehicles are slow, can't negotiate the terrain, looses a fight to a pebble or a branch, and handles like crap in general. In fact, after the vehicle improvement patch they handle even worse than before... Hover vehicles are faster but are literal death traps when used... because they don't stop dead in their tracks if they hit that pebble or branch, they explode..
    I will not be jumping this bandwagon at this time.

    I am not sure why people assume that the lack of a mention for a retractable roof for the Assault, means it does not get one. The only thing CIG said as far as differences between the two is the re-arrangement of the cargo bay, and more weapon turrets as opposed to tractor ones. Considering that both ships look exactly the same from a top down view, save for the fact that the roof on the Assault is smaller, to accommodate the repair bay, there is no reason to assume that the Assault doesn't get a retractable roof.

    Its so easy to get wrapped up in this stuff until you take time to think 'how am I actually going to use this in-game?". Seriously. How often are we going to conduct combat drops into heavily defended areas.... online? I love the concept, but it just seems like that, for 99% of people, the assault version is just going to be an armored transport. At that point I'm inclined to seriously consider the BMM and at least get the shop features to go w/ it.
