  • In November 2021, Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation staff members hiked to historic Caudill Cabin in Doughton Park. The cabin is nestled near the north end of the park, but sits nearly 1,000 feet below Wildcat Rock Overlook, and is most easily accessed from the south via Grassy Gap Fire Road leading to the Basin Creek Trail. Leading the hike was Lenny Caudill, whose ancestor, Martin Caudill, built and resided in the cabin in the 1890s. Part of the once-thriving Basin Cove community, this cabin was one of the few structures that withstood the devastating 1916 flood. Stacked stone chimneys along the trail mark the sites of former homesteads.
The Basin Creek Trail is approximately 8.2 miles round trip from Longbottom Road and includes numerous creek crossings. The difficulty level is moderate.

Funny story… and this might take a few comments. Soooooo back in the mid 90’s a couple of friends and I were about 14-15 something like that maybe younger.

We saw a few people we knew and one of the older guys was an Eagle Scout and told us about the cabin and how it used to be a Stihl and a donkey would run it into town blah blah blah. All we saw was a cabin. Nobody really knew of it went to.

So. Being the intelligent teens we were. Decided to go there and write our names. Well.. there wasn’t a path at that time. The Eagle Scout showed us a “path” to get there. And it wasn’t anything more than sliding down a mountain side.

So we get to the cabin. I sign my name my other buddy does too. And the other guy cheekily laughing says he does as well. That will play out later in this story.

So… since there’s is absolutely no way back up the mountain we slid down. We say “there’s a path or something we saw on one of those signs we will just follow it” it’s 6:30-7pm at that time. In our defense we weren’t lost we were late…. At around 1am when WE FOUND the rescue group.

We ended up hiking like 30 miles. Had a whole rescue group tracking us and trying to find us. Well at the end of it all after WE FOUND THEM…. The next morning. Park ranger hands a $50 fine to our cheeky friend for his “graffiti” in the cabin
