Hey Austin i think you should do the opposite, let your calves hair grow a lot, and all the hair will make them look bigger/not too small, you should try that
+StickierOrange Maybe he would not look normal with leg hair but could make them look bigger, also i think training more the quads, hamstrings and gluted would be great cause all parts of his legs look skinny,or maybe that would make the calver skinnier i don't know man 😅
*1 minute for each variation without rest breaks in between* Jump on the spot using your tip toes as if you're jumping a rope (1 minute) Normal calve raises (1 minute) Outward calve raises (1 minute) Inward calve raises (1 minute) Squat down in regular squatting form and go back up using your tip toes (1 minute) *Shake/kick your legs out every time you feel a burn/cramp sensation*
In the army my calves grew substantionally. Walking fast pace everyday and jogging 5km every day except saturdays and sundays. On gravel road with some hills. It was very common for guys to get sharp pain as their calves outgrew its cap. Try it for 2-3 months and see what it does for you. Gonna start it again later this year. Do it outside and not on threadmills.
Funny, I asked a trainer who’s got his degree in kinesiology and trains NFL, college football, basketball, etc athletes about proper foot placement when doing calf raises several years ago (straight, pigeon, and duck, ie outwards)... he said outside of keeping your toes straight, the other two do very little in developing the calf muscle. I used to do all three because the “pump” in my calves felt like I was accomplishing something. However since keeping my toes straight and focusing on the time under tension, as well as the squeeze/time at the top of the rep, and doing drop sets, I’ve actually seen more gains and muscle symmetry across the muscle itself. I’m not saying his approach is the absolute, defacto right way to do it, cause everyone’s body responds differently, but it’s something to keep in mind. Great video for those who may have the same calf issues AD!
Man I watch all your videos and I love them, I have the same problem with my calves and what I do is complete the range o motion, what I see is when you go up you don't complete all the range, don't sacrifice technique for weight, that's just a tip man I respect you and I admire you bro, keep doing those amazing videos :)
You’re Literally my idol dude, I’m like skinny fat right now and I’m starting a calisthenics journey to get just as big as you or hopefully even better. I know you wouldn’t go Vegan but I also plan to do that as a Vegan and start my own Fitness channel this summer. Keep doing these awesome videos man, love the content.
Calf training tip #1: explosive motions within a short time frame in order to get the calf to put up real work (i.e sprints, but real, fast sprints, go all out style). Calf training tip #2: For isolation exercises, check out Jeff Cavaliere, he has a video on calf training. Calf training tip #3: If you do those, there probably won't be a need to do 5 days a week on random machines, instead focus on training calves using their natural function, that is to act as a spring which sustains everything above it.
Man whatever people say, don't listen to them. I feel your calves are super impressive and big. I am also having bad calves genetics so I just get that excuse to not do calve exercises. But you held on for a heald and half! I can just say that you are seriously into this stuff and if anybody wants gains they need to struggle.

Isnt the main point of muscle grow to let them rest and not to train them 5 times a week? 🤔
GilGruñón your calves literally work everytime you walk. If theyre sore you can feel them even while walking. Calves are the only muscle which you can train even when they are sore. Worked for me
ebony black well obviously walking will never equate the isolation training. Its the same with abs. They keep you upright, work while walking and running so you can do them everyday. And believe me, calves workouts only hurt the first couple of days if you train them everyday.
pierre lequimener genetics man. if his calves would insert lower they would be much bigger and would be able to grow much more but unfortunately you can't change muscle insert
Guys, small calves are actually not a bad thing. Look at fast athletes like Usain Bolt, Tyreek Hill and Asafa Powell. These guys all have small (and high set) calves. This is because having bigger calves (genetically, not by training) actually make you slower. Small calves = Faster athlete!
I have the smallest calves in the world. I’ve been working out for over 3 months and have seen insane progress on every part of my body except my calves. I know everyone stares at them when I’m in public/at school, and it really makes me self conscious about going outside. I’ve tried doing more sets, adding more weight, and my calves look the same after I wake up. They may look slightly biggest after a pump, but once I let them rest it’s looks like ive never used those muscles in my life.
@Retrobunnies yes in general i've upped my calorie intake, but calves are so genetics. recently stared working my tibialis anterior to give my lower legs more definition and more of a diamond shape. just gotta get over my insecurities and do what ever else I can
One tip... Do not use the tip of the foot. Hold the load in the center of the foot just before the fingers are connected. you will feel more spread the entire weight distributing from the calf to the feet and will feel also better results. I do not remember where I learned this but it works ..
Great advice! I also use that machine and step on the ground instead of that metal platform to bang out a couple more sets but this time I would push them out fast. By the time you get to 20 reps depending on the weight you’re using you’ll definitely feel a major burn in your calf muscles unlike any other burn, this is when you can push out an additional 10 reps. I have terrible calf jeans but people have noticed that my calves have definitely toned within the past year and a half. I’d say most of the thickness added on my calves are in the inner calf.
1.I hope im not too late 2. cant go through all the comments so maybe someone already has say something similar nonetheless if you wanna grow your calves you gotta think outside the box here is what i mean weight training alone will NOT make your calves that much bigger. 2 things that are keys imo: 1. you have to incorporate explosive movement so plyometrics, SAQ exercises, running forwards/backwards/uphill, some sprinting, jump rope etc, 2, probably the most important one you have to train more than just 15min every training section just take a look at the dancers they practice for hours same as footbalballer you dont need that long but 3-4x a week a 90min training that involves you calves thats the way they will respond those few min in the gym aint gonna do it. I hope you will take that into consideration
The secret is go for 100 reps bodyweight with 3 sec hold on top and one second down so you dont use momentum. I believe its the best for standing calf raises, while for the seated a normal 4x10 might be nice
You should do heavy farmer's carries with a small, short explosive unlilateral jump on each foot (with at least twice your body weight), as well as lay on your stomach, have someone hold your ankles down, plantorflex your foot and bring your body up and down using your gastrocnemius, soleus and hamstrings. Standing calf raises are also pretty good, but keep reps low and use heavy weight, since the gatrocnemius grows best through explosive movements.
Honestly, it doesn’t take long to grow your calves; and yes calve raises work very well, but from my experience, I like to do them from different angles: from turning my feet’s inward and outwardly, during so many reps, and far as the front of our legs that we really don’t pay attention to, you will want to start doing these too, to get that built up, and the most simple thing you would want to do is raise the top of your feet’s from the ball of your heals, that will work your shin muscles too; you want the whole roundness of the legs and not just the back, and it also gives the calves the width you want from the front to the back, and it also helps to put a good amount of tension on the legs and not just heavy weight; for some reason, they seem to grow more efficiently, because your legs contain more slow twitch muscles than fast twitch so they will adapt more efficiently when their is pure tension applied on it. Like I said, everything I just explained is from experience, and learning about physics of the body and I feel tension is one of the best ways to grow your muscles in any part of your body and calves without putting them through hell.
Hey man +Austin Dunham I know a million people prob are trying to give you advice and shit but I have a good tip for lower leg development TRAIN YOUR SHIN MUSCLES, bruh you wont believe the difference it made in the aesthetic department. You re training your calves 5-6 times a week so thats fine, but incorporate some shin muscle training and you'll get aesthetic calves faster bruh!
Austin for those calves I suggest you lower the weight a lot and go all the way up and all the way down. At the top portion don't forget to contract your calves for at least 1 second and then go down. Great video bro !
Austin, you should try to implement some weighted stretching for your calves on the standing calf raise. Just load up a good amount, then stretch the calves at the bottom. Or you can even just stretch them at the bottom at the end of each set for time. This will cause crazy DOM's in the calves. Great video as always btw.
In my case I have long legs and my calves are really high so what I started doing was seated calf raises to get the solus strong and it will make your calves pop out more
I like working calves on the floor because it really helps me focus on getting my heel high, and also I’d say try weighted stretching at the end of your workout
Ive also have high calves... i just do supersets of 1 and 1/2 reps single calf raises and same with tibialis anterioir raises.. Dont know if the look great but i can do pretty crazy shit thanks to them.. so.. just be grateful for what you have and keep doing your thing...
At first I was like what is he talking about but when he shaved one calf and compared to the other I was like dang that makes so much of a difference lol
Your calves look like mine. I hate having skinny calves! I train mine 2-3 times a week, very similar to you. They have grown a little bit but it has been slow going. Pretty frustrating but you gotta press on!
I used to have tiny calves and it was an insecurity but then I did like thousands of burpees over a month and they grew a couple inches, don’t really understand the specifics behind why but it’s been like 2 years since I did a burpee and they’ve never gone back down to size but that’s probably because I jump everyday for no reason other than it’s fun...
I don't really know if it will work for you but what I did to grow my calves was 100 calf raises everyday and it worked. If after a while it becomes easy add weight then change it to one leg calf raises then do weighed one leg calf raises.
Austin's right, you have to train your calves almost every single day, they recover really fast, i drove a stick shift daily for 7 years now and my left calve are bigger than the right.
Have the same problem here with my small calves... But I prefer training them 3 times max per week so they can rest 'cause we use them literally every day by walking... Still got a looot to do for them
Bro, you’re not fully contracting your calves. Guaranteed you have another inch or two worth of contraction. Also, I find it’ll help if you don’t use a shoe with as much cushion, because it’ll absorb a bit of the energy you apply through the balls of your feet. Good luck with the training!
NoVa Haj Yeah you can, I do and it works. I lift my work bench which is about 90kg and do calve raises on one foot, this makes it difficult so I only do a few reps and my calves grow.
Im not here to criticize Austin just a tip even though I know you are much more experienced than I am but either way, I think you are not doing the contraction right. Its supposed to be all the way up al the way down. When you are at the lowest its perfect you can notice the stretch but in when you are supposed to go all the way up your feet gets to a 45 degree angle compared to your leg in my perspective but I think its because you are going to heavy. I would lower down the weight and really focus on the technique. If anyone wants a video on calves you should o to Jeff Nippard's channel he did a very good scientific explained vid. Let me know your thoughts on this Austin, peace bro!
There are 3 different types of calves. Long, medium, and small. The long calves are usually the ones the you see on bodybuilders. Damn near don't have an ankle. The small calves are raised more towards the top but it means you have more tendon than muscle and are usually faster than the average Joe. Sprinters have these kinds of calves. So if you're a small calve guy and want long calves. Theres literally nothing you can do but work out and increase what you have. Perfect example in this video.
Muscle growth is limited to genetics.. If you have naturally big legs, just train legs by running and maintain their size. If you have skinny calves, it's best to do high intensity, heavy weight training in order to look proportional.
I wasn't expecting the part about shaving the legs HAHA :) For whatever reason this video makes me remember that doing a full squat going all the way down is actually less impact on the knees than going down only to 90 degrees, believe ir or no. Like all squats to remember to not bounce and go down slow; I think I learned that from the Generation Iron and Fitness channel; I am not sure. In any case I wanted to also share that while most people know about the recovery/health benefits of stretching such as yoga, Hindu massage also is very effective, too, for health and recovery to get big calves,. I too have a small calves even though I played football and soccer in HS and do calves consistently. I'll try doing them more often, perhaps not shaving HA :) HA. I need to get a new shaver, maybe if I used a shaver instead of razor it be more comfortable for me.
Increase the intensity and train them for strength also forget about the supersets and fancy shit and just focus on progressing I would say every workout do a 5x5 and once u can get a set of five by a slightly heavier weight then every workout do more sets with the slight increase. For example 2x5x50 and 3x5x47.5 until it's 5x5x50 you get me
🙃do them without shoes ... It engages them more .....shoes are like gloves for hands , u know how gloves inhibits the activation of forearms and makes the exercise easy to do

Your the only one who gave real advice for those with skinny calves
So fucking true maybe I can still achieve something
*1 minute for each variation without rest breaks in between*
Jump on the spot using your tip toes as if you're jumping a rope (1 minute)
Normal calve raises (1 minute)
Outward calve raises (1 minute)
Inward calve raises (1 minute)
Squat down in regular squatting form and go back up using your tip toes (1 minute)
*Shake/kick your legs out every time you feel a burn/cramp sensation*
LFC 5 times the stipke calf workout hehe
eagle Was waiting for someone to say this! ;)
Eyre Death Borne I just posted it here for other people to see. I'm not denying where I got that piece of information from. Stipke is a beast ;)
I suggest you skip a day to let the muscle regrow faster.
Peace Peace no
Not with calves man, calves forearms and abs you can train everyday
A13Mg g are you sure because its just another muscle
Mr. I let my calves rest once a week, along with my abs and forearms.
@a13mg g you CAN"T train forearms every day! That's a sure way to get tendonitis/golfers elbow. Know 3 people who had it because they tried this BS.
In the army my calves grew substantionally. Walking fast pace everyday and jogging 5km every day except saturdays and sundays. On gravel road with some hills. One thing I like to do is 1 and 1/2 reps and it has helped me a bit.

big difference after a year! an important thing is to train the tibial muscles, they help to give more volume to the legs
Respect for showing ur calves. #teamnocalves how hard I trained them...!

I feel the pain of the guy in the back with the Ball Lmao
I like this guy , subbed
You should do heavy farmer's carries with a small, short explosive unlilateral jump on each foot (with at least twice your body weight), as well as lay on your stomach, have someone hold your ankles down, plantorflex your foot and bring your body up and down using your gastrocnemius, soleus and hamstrings. Love your video’s bro. Keep going
Hey man +Austin Dunham
I know a million people prob are trying to give you advice and shit but I have a good tip for lower leg development
TRAIN YOUR SHIN MUSCLES, bruh you wont believe the difference it made in the aesthetic department.
You re training your calves 5-6 times a week so thats fine, but incorporate some shin muscle training and you'll get aesthetic calves faster bruh!
Miguel Anjos What are some exercises that do this effectively?
Charpe I’m curious as well
Austin for those calves I suggest you lower the weight a lot and go all the way up and all the way down. At the top portion don't forget to contract your calves for at least 1 second and then go down.
Great video bro !
I had small calves then I did 4 sets of 35-45 single leg body weight calves raises. It works
Brandon Taylor Does it actually work?
Austin, you should try to implement some weighted stretching for your calves on the standing calf raise. Just load up a good amount, then stretch the calves at the bottom. Or you can even just stretch them at the bottom at the end of each set for time. This will cause crazy DOM's in the calves.
Great video as always btw.

I like working calves on the floor because it really helps me focus on getting my heel high, and also I’d say try weighted stretching at the end of your workout
Your leg calf is amazing
Dude Austin Dunham your the shit I started watching your videos a couple weeks ago and the pounds are just falling of
You're doing all that can be done: seated, standing, and unilateral. If you want more, try hill sprints and stairs.

Happy Hour they are OK I take plenty of time to rest now and not do it everyday so I don't mess up my joints
Great video you should do a comparison from a few years back
I don't really know if it will work for you but what I did to grow my calves was 100 calf raises everyday and it worked. If after a while it becomes easy add weight then change it to one leg calf raises then do weighed one leg calf raises.
I prefer waiting until little calves get trendy
Incorporate sprinting after the weighted exercises. You need to hit the fast twitch muscles and it's safer then "bouncing" at the end.
dude your thumbnail is hecka funny
Austin please do a 5-minute calf workout
Austin's right, you have to train your calves almost every single day, they recover really fast, i drove a stick shift daily for 7 years now and my left calve are bigger than the right.

You can also try standing on the balls of your feet or stand on your toes and hold it for as long as you can before going up and down reps.
I’ve never really had to train calves as often because of my genetics, but i still regret not giving them enough time
Gelato On Console Same. A lot of people ask me about my calves, but I rarely work them to be honest
Austin T Media genetics are important my dude, they aren’t everything, but they are important
Austin You are really strong man nice
Running in soft sand is a great way to build big ol’ calves.
Works wonders for me
Really?
There are 3 different types of calves. Long, medium, and small. The long calves are usually the ones the you see on bodybuilders. Damn near don't have an ankle. The small calves are raised more towards the top but it means you have more tendon than muscle and are usually faster than the average Joe. Sprinters have these kinds of calves. So if you're a small calve guy and want long calves. Theres literally nothing you can do but work out and increase what you have. Perfect example in this video.
Please introduce some challenges so we can be addicted and motivated
CalisThenics KIngdom you can go and watch daniel laizans. He made a video a few days ago with 4 challenges ;)
Hey saustin... I like your videos

Ay remember me requesting a vlog from last video.
Thx man you are my biggest inspiration
You can see how fully developed it is, it's just that frustrating size that bothers. & I'm talking in general
can you do a calf workout with dumbells video
Get Joocy! shirt 😂 shoutout to Cassady Campbell
Shaving isn’t gay, it’s smarter to look more more shredded
Bigger ...I been doing that , I shave my arm hair too and subbed !!!
