"Seems very primitive, but weirdly capable and full of surprises" - basically all main line russian/soviet designed weapons summarised in one line. This seeming primitiveness I think streams from prioritised simplicity, whilst surprises and capability - from the often out of the box yet effective, straight to the point point way weapon designers of this region think. This way of thought and design I suppose streams from the fact that soviet/russian designers were always short on funds and had to use the simplest solutions possible to achieve lowest costs, but also to find out of the box decisions to make those solutions as capable as more complicated ones. There is even a russian proverb: "Голь на выдумку хитра", which means "Poor people come up with the most cunning solutions". There also were a lot of very complex and ingenious soviet/russian weapon designs, like AN94 ir AEK assault rifles, but only those which had the best cost and simplicity to capability ratio got to be main service weapons, and Mig 29 is one of them. On the other hand, american weapon designs, for example, are very capable, they are often famous for their tremendous cost because american weapon designers and firms had much more funds historically partly because USA was never in finansial desperation since the great depression, partly because american weapon trials work differently. American designers focus more than their soviet/russian counterparts on impressing clients with their creations to get it adopted, because they work in environment of free market (idk what is the term in English) where it is most important to get the government contract and get money with it. They still put out excellent machines, but they are a lot of those which were made just to be sold and those which are made to get in the army are not as restricted on funds and don't need to be as cunningly simple. It's a bit messy but I hope you got the idea. P.S. Soviet desperation for funds is based on history. WW2 destroyed most of soviet infrastructure and took tremendous amount of human resource, and in such difficult conditions soviet industry had to come up with weapons and solutions that would be on par with american ones. Contruary to this USA's blooming economy got even better after WW2 because the infrastructure was not damaged at all in the war and human life loss was a dozen times less severe - 0.6 million vs 20 - 27 million. Plus USA got war reparations and a lot of influence.

The Mig-29M / Mig-35 are much more capable fighter aircraft. Hey, Growling Sidewinder, I wonder when DCS developers will create a model for MiG-29 OVT the thrust vectoring jet with a fly-by-wire system. This actually was the prototype of the MiG-35 which is in service now but MiG-35 doesn't have thrust vectoring as initially planned. The OVT was demonstrated 10 years ago in 2011. A couple of videos of this MiG-29 OVT similar to those with the F15 STOL would be fantastic. Something like "OVT and Bandit Unkown" or OVT vs any other 4++ or 5th generation jets.
I must say that the mig 29 is still an interesting aircraft, a small thing that I would improve is the aiming system of the machine gun, for me not as immediate as it aims.
Love watching your videos dude, I have actually learned a lot about dogfighting and BFM, all knowledge which was confirmed by my F-16 fighter pilot friend! Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Love that analogy. When I was 19 I owned a 94 miata, and my dad had a 92 and a 94. We would go race them in time trials, and there would be guys in american muscle cars, and uber expensive foreign sedans, and you could always tell they were new to the track, because the miata's, s2000's, and del Sol's with b series would all be getting the top times. If any of the guys who brought their brand new mid life crises discovered they enjoyed the track they would go buy a cheap Japanese car with something like a 1.6 or 1.8 in order to be competitive. Nothing is as fast on a winding country road as a 92 miata with a manual transmission, it doesn't even come close to weighing a ton, so you feel like you're in a gokart, and having rear wheel drive you can feel exactly when the back end comes loose, and control exactly how far sideways you want to be. There isn't a better car to learn how to drive fast in. It was always our goal to put a v6 or even a v8 in a miata just because but never got around to it, someday maybe with my kids. Love when someone else appreciates those cars.
Have you ever thought about showing your control inputs with an overlay? It would help me see how hard you’re pulling at times because I struggle with the rate fight
MiG-29: the greatness of simplicity. Doing so much, with the less... Merry Xmas all over the sky! You should dogfight Santa, GS, that would be the most direspectfull fight ever!!

Let’s roll. I can’t believe I’m addicted to your videos. They are so well made and I love the comments. If you fly a Rafael under French colors, you would need to make a video of you running away from everyone. That would be funny. Longshot would Fox 2 you every time. LOL
Only one word for mig29 when Growling sidewinder is sitting in it : "Boss" is here.
When GS said "Mig 29, bandit unknown," I was expecting to see a LOT of F-22's.
Here's hoping that I get disappointed...
I must say that the mig 29 is still an interesting aircraft, a small thing that I would improve is the aiming system of the machine gun, for me not as immediate as it aims.
I replayed that kill at 7.05 like 15 times. Great shot.
Great video GS thanks, I really needed that today I can’t get enough of watching your videos and watching you fly.
Love watching your videos dude, I have actually learned a lot about dogfighting and BFM, all knowledge which was confirmed by my F-16 fighter pilot friend! Thanks and keep the videos coming!
It's the Miata/S2000/lotus of the jet world. Simple. Basic. Great in the hands of a skilled pilot. Mig is definitely sexier tho.
Love when someone else appreciates those cars.
bandit unknown is one of my favourites series from you i cannot lie XD
I'm just falling in love with the Mig-29
Was really expecting a "my name is Jeff" in there at the end.
Lol 3rd video in a row where you've prematurely called splash on a bandit
7:50 it's a Gen 4 aircraft made with gen 3 technology basically
Maybe a hand cam? I want to see what it looks like with you flipping switches and what your throttle Looks when do these acrobatics
@Growling oh, my God... dude, we gotta get you on some sort of detox on this whole Mig 29 thing! =D
Have you ever thought about showing your control inputs with an overlay? It would help me see how hard you’re pulling at times because I struggle with the rate fight
The Syrian lead turn on round 2 was spectacular!
Love the Bandit unknown fights GS! Great job.
Nice Rudder work. That J15 skid counter great stuff
MiG-29: the greatness of simplicity. Doing so much, with the less...
Merry Xmas all over the sky! You should dogfight Santa, GS, that would be the most direspectfull fight ever!!
Would be cool if you could get some 2v2 fights going on. Having a wingman and another aircraft to worry about would open up a whole other world of tactics.
Can we see some high speed canopy passes when you're victorious? Flares for added effect would be a festive touch, like a parade.
The 29 is like the AK of fighter aircraft, a bit primitive, simple but powerful and effective
Astonishing dogfighter the Mig29 in the right hands!!!
This series (unknown bandits) is second only to the two idiots series.
Whenever GS says good good good you know he knows he f'd up!
Fastest click in the west
The mig 29 really looks fun!
Merry Christmas! May y'all have a happy, healthy, safe holiday season.
Rd. 3 looked like he was about to stall when you gave him the final burst.
Mig-29 is one hell of a fighter!
Nice show from the ground, until a Mig 29 crashes through your apartment roof and levels the building.
Mig 29 is underrated
have you ever managed to use the buildings on the map to either get a maneuver kill or help when you're defensive? like what you see in the movies?
I always thought that piping holding the hud together was the look down shoot down system the mig 29 was touted as having back when it was the new hot thing
You just nailed Tom Cruise at round 3
At least there wasn't a possibility of the F-22 forming up on your wing on this day.
You’ve gotten pretty deadly with the 29. I like it.
Even in real life those Mig 29 feel like they fly on diesel because of that black smoke 😆
Just strafed the bejeezus out of that Tomcat! Dang.
Amazing. Love the '29
MiG-29 is just about one of the sexiest fighters out there.
It would be awesome if there is a MiG-35 in DCS. I believe you would be happiest pilot there. MiG-35 is first proper MiG-29.
dropped the first 29 onto that building nciely
You have great aim when leading longer distances.
Wow what a great show! Come see this kids you guys see that nice manuvers..did you see that turn some fish tail overshoot and lo........
Killed in action .
The first plane crashed into a newly opened Jamba Juice
It will be cool if it starts from BVR as well. There would be mind games to be played on both sides.
That was interesting and cool :) Thanks guys!
I love mig29 videos. So much fun 😁
Man, you're lucky you didn't FOD the engines on that last finishing pass with the dying Tomcat.
yes lol, youre correct. at the very least the engines would not have enjoyed that fire I inhaled lol
It’d be cool if there was a damage model where if you hit the wing tips you could detonate any onboard missiles or bombs.
The explosive train required to detonate munitions makes them pretty resistant to things like that.
Goes to show in competent hands the mig29 can be very competent
Great vids watch them all, thanks for putting one on for Christmas eve that one had a fantastic start loved it. I really like the ww2 clips. Would love to see more wirh other aircraft. Please and thank you... Merry Christmas and a happy new year...
what is that soundtrack used after a kill?
Have a merry Christmas and happy New Year's
This unironically aged like fine wine
Imagine if Dubai held air shows with dogfights just off the coast like this.😄😄 Cha ching$$$$
Maybe you could do a video about Yugoslavian 6 MiG-29 aricraft shot down 1999
Would be interesting to see upgraded Mig 29 UPG in DCS
I am waiting for the mig-29UPG version of the indian air force to come in DCS which has been upgraded to such an extent that it is almost same as the mig-35 . With the upgraded avionics , CFT added , new engines , new radar and many new missiles . It's something . (Believe me i've sat in it and seen it flying , it's amazing !)
Won't happen anytime soon do to russian laws. Best they can do is a very early MiG-29A
@@Mike_Romeo I saw the upg version of mig-29 on some channel in DCS but i don't know how accurate it would be !
