Those airmen were so brave. Imagine going through these missions day after day, climbing back in your bomber knowing you were going to be in a fight for your life each time. Heroes all!
Long ago I heard a PSA on the radio around either Memorial Day or Veterans Day, in which a former infantryman was talking about looking up at hundreds of bombers flying east while fighting through the mud and dirt of France. He was saying how those guys had it so easy, sleeping in beds at night, getting hot meals every day, taking showers, etc. Several hours later he saw them flying west, greatly reduced in number and with many trailing smoke or on fire, and was thinking how glad he was that he wasn’t up there.
@@philsmith2444 yea man. you had higher odds of survival as a grunt on the front lines vs being in a bomber crew. fun act, the actor who played 'Scotty' on Star trek, James Dohun [i think that's his name] was in a bomber crew; and I believe Gene Roddenberry was apart of a bomber crew as well.

That German pilot was Erich “Bubi” Hartmann. Most of his kills were catching enemy planes unaware. Had credited his exceptional eyesight with finding the enemy. His book “The blond knight of Germany” explains it all. Great read.

@@George_M_ No. The British wanted NA to build P40s under license. NA thought they could come up with something better than the P40. It was never designed as a ground attack aircraft and that was never asked for. It happened to get adapted for it yes. But so was everything.
B-29 Bomber my Grampa flew over Japan WW2. I asked if he saw bombers shot down? he said:"all the time and I'd think IT WASN'T gonna happen to me". He came home to be a fireman and eventually captain in Los Angeles. Miss him tons.
I love videos like this, as it seems to showcase what actually went on historically. The lesson that i take from this is that energy is/was everything in this scenario. Almost zero of the kills are multi turn, low energy 'dogfights.' It also shows how the superior performance of the p51 at altitude, combined with using the bombers as bait, absolutely crushed the German fighter force.
Major fun watching you dispense some belt-fed freedom over WWII Europe, brother! I know it means editing for you but I hope it's at least as much fun to make as it is to watch. This is not a request, just a note. I watch those 88s shredding the B-17s and would love to see a formation of P-47s or Mitchells swoop in and _plaster_ those guns while they're focused on the bombers above. I wonder if the 8th Air Force did that during the air war? A SEAD mission during an attack run seems like it could be effective. Anyway, many thanks for another great video!
I have heard vets say that sometimes the flak was so thick you could almost get out and walk on it. This vid demonstrated that very well. They were brave brave guys...
I was just reading Robert Johnson's book about being a P47 Pilot, in one of his early missions he took a ton of 20mm cannon fire, his canopy was damaged and couldn't move far enough for him to bail, and his hydraulic lines were spraying all over him inside, and oil was all over the canopy, while the plane was also burning. Unable to bail out he flew back to England with no instruments to land after being pounced by ANOTHER FW190 who shot him up more and then let him go. Wild book and absolutely worth the read for that story alone.
At least you know what happened to your friends though because its daytime. In RAF Bomber Command your mates just disappear off the face of the Earth, never to be seen again.
Maybe not so much, the gunners would often identify any plane that points its nose at the bomber as hostile rather than by the colours or type of plane
Nobody but americans are going to fly bare metal planes. I'm pretty sure everybody got briefed on what squadrons on both sides are in the area and what the squadron colors are.
Its like a story of lone mustang piloted by major james howard (he is using a p51b variant) using hit and run tactics protecting the bomber formation against the entire luftwaffe pilot cool stuff
It amazes me that the P51 was able to have such great range, while carrying so much ammunition. While also having such amazing performance. All while being water cooled. (With the Rolls-Royce engine, the Allison was a beast too. But it was naturally Asperated.)
Even w/ 50 cals raining till empty to bring the enemy down! That's why the switch to cannons for air combat made whole lot of sense @ late stages of WW2 and Korea. It even took the NA F-86H Sabre to switch from original six 50 cal M3s to four 20mm T-160 cannons!
For god sake, you are the best with these old timers video 😍😍😍😍. Live you man , really appreciate your work. Its amazing to watch old aircraft battles 😍😍😍

I love the WWII/Korea content. Thank you for your entertainment and commentary as always. Would love to see you and Shotgun try the same scenarios in a new video, but the next time, switch mules for Part 2.
If i remember correctly Erich Hartman (THE top scoring fighter ace in WWII if you belive the claims...) there was an interview with him after the war in which he stated that he basically "jumped" them or rather buggered off. That's how he survived and scored so high. It's been a while since i saw that video, the interview mustve taken place sometime in the 70/80s i guess.
You said it! I've learned a TON about modern air combat from GS, and I have a great respect for the challenges of that. But I always enjoy when he mixes in these WWI and WWII encounters. Cheers!
The B-17:s should alternate their altitude up/down close to the final approach of the bomb run to evade flak (as much as possible). Further away from the target the bombers should in addition also change heading for the same effect. All this in a random manner, within the formation-rules of course. Not fly straight and at a constant altitude all the time - this is making the bombers very easy targets for the flak. Thank you for another, as always, great video! Ps, in my humble opinion the P51 Mustang is the most beautiful propeller-airplane ever made.
I think the thing that really unnerves the bomber crews are not the intercepting fighters, but the flak. As one bomber crew described in a concentration of flak, they can literally walk in the sky, imagine the amount of the sharpnels it produces. Even the escorting and intercepting fighters move away from the flak concentration that they might get hit as well.
There was a German ace who having engaged a P51 and survived said that from that point on every time he closed his cockpit he felt like he was closing his coffin lid.
Fw 190 had a jettisonable canopy. Pull a lever and off went the hood. Unhook the harness, quick trimming some nose down against back pressure and let go of the stick and out the pilot flew.
Nice work. I'm pretty sure the Fw190 suffered at higher altitudes like this. Also there was a model they had that was more armed and armored up to take on the bombers, performance suffered there as well. I think the Dora was better in these respects. I think there were many aces who snuck up on their opponents. It was the better way to go. Furballs are risky and lose energy. AFAIK back in WWII the idea was to see your enemy first and try to have height on them, then manuver to get into the best position for an attack.
Loving these WW2 vids. There seems to be a lot more action than jet fights where it's over in a sec or 2... Love to see more maybe some other missions...?
Great idea for a vid: Timewarp an A-10 into WWII. Just for for the fun of it. Have it fully loaded to drop JDAMs and cluster bombs on the anti-aircraft flak guns and German Tiger tanks. Have it shred planes and bombers with it's main gun. Fire some Mavericks. Etc... Merka! lol It would so fun to watch!

Bomber Command: We need a long-range escort fighter.
North American and Rolls Royce: *Designs the most versatile prop plane of all time*
Actually, Rolls-Royce only came in after the fact, because of the RAF’s need for engines. Originally, it was Allison that powered the Mustang/Apache.
