Review: 2019 Infiniti Q50 3.0t AWD - Best Used Luxury Sport Sedan Value?

  • I review this 2019 Infiniti Q50 3.0t AWD in its lower Luxe trim to see how it drives compared to its competitors and discuss the value proposition of a used Infiniti Q50. With a punchy 300 hp engine, good handling and ride, plus attractive looks, the Q50 is appealing on its own already. Then add in the low prices for these on the used market and you have one of the most compelling used luxury sport sedan values out there. What do you think about the used Q50? Thanks to Harrison Auto Sales for providing this car! This one is currently for sale and you can get more info on it here: www.harrisonautos.com/details...

    Wow. Never expected a Q50 review from a prominent reviewer in this day and age. Just purchased a 2020 Q50 CPO four months ago after handing off my 2015 Mustang V6 to my son for work/college. The Q50 has its quirks for sure but I purchased it for its value, performance, comfort, and handling. In this market this is one of the best vehicle deals out there with huge modding potential. Thanks for posting the review Matt.

    I’m an Infiniti enthusiast, being an owner for 15 years with different models. My Q50S is a gem, but I still miss and loved my G37. I feel as though people just misunderstand the brand, but also feel that the brand needs to figure itself out in their path forward.

      The OEM run flats by Dunlop are terrible! I can’t wait for them to wear out so I can get a better quality set. Tech is very outdated, but doesn’t bother me as it is a low priority. I change my oil every 5k miles not 10k to prolong the life of the turbos. It’s the details of the interior that are often overlooked and missed buy reviewers and buyers. such as the felt lined map pockets in the doors. Other competitors “dont offer that such as in the IS300. The car drives great and is comfortable for a sedan. Not too low and very quiet. Also a V6 is hard to find in sedans now.

  • @TheBreakfastLover
    @TheBreakfastLover Год назад +41

    IMO, Infiniti messed up by renaming their entire line-up "Q". Any legacy created by the G35 and G37 was lost. It got even more confusing when the full-size Q45 was discontinued, then the Q50 came out, but was a successor to the G37, which was concurrently sold as the "Q40" in its final year.

    I think the Q50 is a good car. Well priced, good looks inside and out, not a terrible service record. It just always sat in the background. Not a ton of marketing for it,, and Infinity didn't seem interested in regular updates to it. And it's a shame, because they have something good to work with here.

    The Q50 and Q60 make for great used cars, you can pick up a low mileage ones for low 30s, high 20s and you get some decent stuff for the price. On the opposite end though buying these new makes literally no sense because it’s overpriced and is guaranteed to depreciate harder than a rock.

    Nice review Matt !!! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Q50. I love the sound of the V6, just not in love with that 2 screen setup of the infotainment. I don't understand why they're still making it that way. I have a feeling pretty soon this car will be discontinued, just like Nissan is doing with the Maxima.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Год назад +5

      Yeah, they already got rid of the Q60 last year. 2023 will probably be the last year for the Q50 too.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan Год назад +1

      Not impossible, as Matt said Q60 getting axed this year is ominous sign for the platform. I'm betting it will get a mild refresh to match up with new transmission and LSD from the Z and maybe its infotainment.
      But it won't see another generation as a purely gas powered engine, there will be a hybrid or pure EV sedan to take its place but I suspect the Q50 will hang around with the VR30 motor till around 2025-26.
      Infiniti just doesn't have anything to fill that void at the moment, the EV platform that underpins the Ariya could be used and modified for a RWD bias but Nissan doesn't have the battery capacity to meet the demand of 3-4 electric cars.
      After that it will probably see a full redesign with a new platform to coincide with a new GT-R and whatever form it will take.

    I test drove the Q50 3.0T AWD twice for a new purchase and the experience was twice disappointing (I really wanted to love this car). The lazy transmission is killing any pretension to be a sport car and the ride is just too horrendous. I am myself a big fan of V engine but must admit the Audi A4 2.0L engine with the 7-speed dual clutch was such a better performer. The old 3.7L Q50 is the one model to get as a used car; not this one.

    • @clarks2001
      @clarks2001 Год назад

      I have the 3.7 Q50 and the transmission is just as lazy as the newer ones. The newer Q’s transmissions are built better and can handle more power too. I personally think they shoulda went with the ZF8 transmissions. Woulda been the best thing for it. Also not having the InTouch 2 screen mess woulda been great too.

      Agreed. I drove a 2018 Redsport thinking they'd dial up the shift speed and aggressiveness....Nope. Fun engine and decent chassis let down by a true slushbox. In the age of ZF 8 speeds and DCTs, it is a standout in a bad way.

    Need more used car reviews! I cross shopped this with the Lexus GS350 and the Lexus won out due to reliability ratings, larger back seat, and more comfy seats. The Q50 has the more enjoyable engine and wished Lexus made a Turbo V6 to compete with this. These Q50 have massive value and have considered a Red Sport 400 as a fun car.

    Video suggestion: rank vehicles. For instance, rank sport sedans in each category to help us buy the perfect vehicle. Like most sporty: 1. Giulia 2. XE 3. CT4 4. etc. or Most reliable: 1. IS and best value: 1. Q50 and Q60.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Год назад +2

      I don't like ranking videos because in my opinion they aren't very helpful. Ranking things based on subjective metrics and then acting like they're objective facts and giving it a score only works if the person watching has all the same preferences, needs and wants from their car that I do. I know it's popular among other channels but I personally recognize that cars aren't a "one size fits all" thing, so I'd rather provide input on the various characteristics and then let the viewer decide how it ranks in their mind.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan Год назад

      Nah the Q50 was a better driver than the earlier 340i models at least when the Q50 isn't on the run flat tires it comes with, the BMW B58 also isn't as potent as the Q50's till it got refreshed in 2019-2020.
      Reliability is about the same but BMW parts cost about 50% more. That said both cars have class leading 6 cylinder motors.
      Transmission though yeah the ZF is a fair bit snappier, but the Q50 isn't bad it just needs to be manually controlled.

  • @tommygeary1931

    This is a great car for under $20k, but definitely was not worth the MSRP new. The two main problem with it: the 7 speed auto is trash, and is the same trans they've been using since like 2009 on the g37. And the interior is from the 2013 redesign. I'd recommend a low mileage G37 over the Q50, unless you plan on tuning the engine (the one good thing is that 3.0 engine is highly tunable, over 400hp with a tune)

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan Год назад +2

      Aye Infiniti offers insane leases on these cars which a little known fact, you could get a fully loaded Red Sport for $550/month. Accord levels of money but that big sticker price always scares everyone away,.
      The transmission was updated in 2016 to be a bit more responsive but yeah its still largely the same unit from a G37, which isn't bad but unless you baby it its not as responsive as one would like.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  Год назад +2

      Yeah, the Giulia is definitely a much better driving sports sedan. I didn't include it in the comparison because it has a bit less horsepower, but it's close enough that I should have included it. They're also great bargains and if it were me, I'd definitely rather have a Giulia over a Q50, even with the lower power output.

      If the Q50 had a better refresh, like a serious interior and infotainment overhaul, I imagine it would be a pretty close call for me. But whenever I consider dipping my toes in the used sport sedan market, I'm always a bit surprised by how cheap the Alfas are. I think I'd ultimately chose that chassis combined with the zf transmission over similarly priced alternatives even despite the power difference.

    Both versions of the car have nearly identical tuning potential, you can toss just a JB4 at these for about $500 and get Red Sport performance. Great value platform even if as a new car product Infiniti dropped the ball with this generation and didn't put as much money in them as they should when they where refreshed in 2016.
    That said if your buying the 3.0T recommend CPO/extended warranty, the turbos do seem to have some oiling issues and you don't want to pay for that out of pocket.

      @@miles9911 JB4 is a form of tuning, it tricks the ECU into think the car is producing less boost than it actually is and thus the car by design and so it raises the boost and fuel meaning you make more power.
      As for blow turbos I've seen one person do that and it was after the entire Q50 forums told him not to push that much boost.
      If you stick to the stock maps included with JB4 and have adequate octane fuel you are pretty safe.
      Again there are some issues with the Turbos when it comes to oiling issues, but they happen to stock and tuned cars.

    I had really high hopes when we bought our Q50 (3.0t). It seemed like a great value. But I’ve never had a car that routinely seemed to go out of its way to make you hate it like this evil troll on wheels. The Nissanic quirks became automotive demons after all the long and enlightening conversations with our (very nice) Infiniti service rep as the motor was being replaced before 70k miles. It was at that point I realized just how poorly the car was engineered. The 300 HP 3.0t motor doesn’t have a sufficient oil supply and tends to run hot - which means the engine tends to consume the far cylinders. That’s a $30k plus job, so thank Heaven for warranties. I also don’t think there’s a coolant measurement, pretty stunning for a car that is this gadget heavy. Oh, and unless you turn off “trace control”, the Q will eat rear brake pads on literally a monthly basis in heavy use. Every freaking month. Anyway, both my wife and I never hated a car more, and she’s had Ford Tauruses. As I was driving the unloved beast to be traded in, the AC that we’d just had charged decided to stop working. Typical. I cursed the closeted Renault machine and kicked it twice (once for myself, once for my wife) as I joyfully handed off the key fobs for the final time. That was my second Infiniti mechanical disaster, and certainly my last. I’ve never been so happy to get rid of a car.
